  1. Today morning once i started driving my car for a bit, got a low engine oil level warning from my car. It was only 9k from my last service with the AD in Feb 2022. My car is only 1.5yrs old and fortunately still under warranty....will monitor the situation after topping this oil up. So went to Shell petrol station and bought a 1L bottle 0w40 fully syn oil. Park the car on a flat surface, stop the engine, Open the bonnet and identify where the 710 cap is... Pardon my dusty engine bay. Using a rag, open the 710 cap in anticlockwise direction (warning, it will be hot and may have hot air/steam rushing out). Pour in the whole 1L bottle of the oil. Recap the 710 in clockwise twist. Close the bonnet. Get back into your car and recheck the oil level. Done. Keeping finger cross it is nothing major. But from the infotainment system instructions, seem like this event is pretty much run of the mill and can be easily DIYed. It did not even suggest sending back to the AD for further check. So I am interpreting it as something very common place for BMW twinpower engines?

Since I love knowing all I can about every vehicle in the fleet I’ve been binging all sorts of Prius videos. One of the ones that I’ve come across is a detailed teardown of a high-mileage 2004 Prius engine that looks good, even after some neglect. A few readers have expressed concerns about picking up a Prius with 90,000 miles and expecting to run it 30,000 miles a year. That kind of driving can be hard on a car. Yet, I’ve seen plenty of second and third-generation Prii driving around in taxi service with more than 300,000 miles and still kicking. If, like me, you wonder what the engine of a high-mileage Prius looks like, YouTuber Speedkar99 tore one down and examined its wear. The engine here is a 1.5-liter 1NZ-FXE inline-four from a second-generation Prius with 303,561 miles. This engine uses a low compression ratio and a high expansion ratio. This works by holding the intake valve open longer for a reverse flow of intake air into the intake manifold, simulating an Atkinson-cycle engine. The result is less power but more efficiency, perfect for a hybrid. The 2ZR-FXE uses a similar system. The Prius the engine was taken out of was a parts vehicle. Our host tears through the engine, giving us a thorough explanation of how everything works. But we’re here to see how this engine has fared over 17 years, and the video certainly delivers. First up is a tour through the positive crankcase ventilation system and even the throttle body, which presents some dirty build-up and could use some good cleaning. The YouTuber says that this is likely because the car may have not gotten timely oil changes but even then, there isn’t a lot of wear. They blame the sludge on cheap oil, the cheap oil filter and deferred oil changes. The filter in the oil pump pickup tube appeared to be pretty gunked up and the pistons have some carbon buildup on them. The bigger point of concern for the YouTuber was clogged-up oil control rings on the pistons. Overall, the engine looks pretty good despite some neglect. It’s no wonder why Prii are able to rack up so many miles on their odometers when they appear to be so durable. Still, the sludge build-up is a perfect example of why you should always keep up on your maintenance.>

  5. Is it a myth to change engine oil every six months? Recently, I have received a message from my buddy and asking if it is a myth to change engine oil every six month? So some of you might be wondering, during this covid-19 period, my car mileage is not maximised until 10K, and do I still need to do an engine oil change? The dangers of not changing your oil Oil will break down over time due to high temperatures in the engine (known as thermal breakdown). Because of this, the oil isn’t capable of providing the necessary lubrication for metal parts after an extended period of use. Without lubrication, the moving joints in the engine will start rubbing against each other and cause premature wear. Oil also has a limited capacity on how much particulates it can hold. By not changing the oil, particles already in the oil will begin to settle and cause corrosion. One of the biggest dangers of not changing your oil is sludge buildup. Sludge occurs when old oil begins to gel or solidify in an engine. When sludge begins to build up, oil isn’t able to flow freely through the engine and can cause oil starvation to crankshafts, bearings, camshafts, and other valve train components not be lubricated.   6. Not all engine oil are made equal. Which happens if the fuel in the combustion chamber is not completely burned? Also the answer to this question is the source of some breakdowns, i.e. the fuel continues to flow to the crankcase. In fact, it flows down into the crankcase through the piston skirt, where it mixes with the oil of the engine. There are a number of effects once this anomaly occurs. Once polished, holding the lubricant in the area is more difficult for the liner, which can result in faults like grabbing the piston and the liner itself. https://media.giphy.com/media/kHNGTdxTLjOuebu0ll/giphy.gif Oil dilution Another fuel leakage effect in the crankcase is the dilution of oil. This causes the lubricant to lose viscosity, which means that the films formed are weaker and less able to withstand high loads that may occur at certain points, such as rod bearings and crankshaft areas. What if the viscosity gets too low? This causes contact between the metal surfaces, resulting in rapid friction wear of the bearings. Biofuel is associated with a third effect of fuel passing through the crankcase. All diesel and gasoline actually contain biofuels in their mixture (in the first case biodiesel and in the second case bioethanol). As the fuel in the crankcase is subject to high temperatures, some of it evaporates, resulting in the accumulation of the portion of biofuel in the case of diesel fuel. As a result, the lubricant and fuel mixture's viscosity increases, and the wear on the bearings will dramatically speed up. Direct Injection Engines Have a History of Oil Dilution Problems There are numerous benefits of direct injection. The powertrain control module will show more control over the fueling by injecting fuel directly into the tank. Placement and control yields more performance and lower emissions, but there may be downsides as with any technology. Some are irritating, such as a sooty exhaust tip, while others, such as low-speed pre-ignition, can cost you a motor. "Simply put, direct injection engines produce higher levels of dilution of fuel in the motor oil, causing specific problems." Modern motor oils contain high levels of detergents dependent on calcium. Such calcium detergents help to save fuel, avoid corrosion, and clean the engine. These same calcium detergents, however, also increase the risk of an irregular occurrence of combustion, also known as low-speed pre-ignition. LSPI events may damage an engine, resulting in the reformulation of motor oils to reduce the potential for LSPI to occur. High temperatures, on the other hand, need a slightly higher viscosity, but one that is not too high to inhibit successful flow. You don't want oil that's too thin and quick to flow as it might have harmful long-term effects on your engine. So which is the best motor oil: 5w40 vs 5w30? 5w30 The most controversial on the market is the 5w30 engine oil. It can be used for various vehicle types and fits well for a large temperature range. The versatility makes it debatable with car owners, although it is favored by a minority, renewed COE customers do not find it comfortable to use a lower viscosity. 5w40 The engine oil of 5w40 is most famous compared to its counterpart. Therefore, it is as popular or commonly used in Singapore. Using this engine oil will help you improve your engine's safety. It protects the engine against building up and sludge, eventually preventing damage. It is also praised for being able to move quickly to all other moving parts and is therefore effective in lubricating the engine. 5w30 vs 5w40 For the most part, these two engine oils are similar. During colder times, they both operate well and thus effectively lubricate the engine. The oil moves quickly through all the components, making it easy when it's cold to rev the engine. But the theory don't apply in our warm climate. In addition, both are used for warmer temperatures as the thickness provides adequate protection for the engine. In addition, the only major difference in warmer temperatures between 5w30 and 5w40 is the viscosity. It makes the 5w30 more appropriate for colder temperatures and the 5w40 more suitable for warmer ones. Final Verdict When it comes to choosing the right engine oil for your vehicle, you don't have to fight.   8. Dead Christmas Trees To Be Used In The Making Of Engine Oil? “Motor” oil is the lifeblood of any car – unless you drive one of those battery-powered slugs. The lubricating fluid has typically been made from crude oil found underground, or a man-made mixture that creates a synthetic oil. Now, your dead or dying Christmas tree might be the way of the future to create your next oil change. A company called Nexcel has developed a motor oil made entirely from waste, which includes chewing gum and Christmas trees. A myriad of waste items have been recycled in the lab to yield properties required for crucial chemical additives. If Castrol wants our old Christmas trees, will the company be paying a “core charge”? If so, we will need to pay an environmental deposit when we purchase a tree? Castrol innovation business, Nexcel, has produced automotive-grade engine oil using nothing but waste products. Chewing gum, used fryer oil, batteries, bathroom sealant, and even a Christmas tree have been recycled and have yielded vital properties for the ambitious program, which demonstrates the significant potential of re-refined oil. “The project showcases the sustainability potential of waste” says John Ward-Zinski, Nexcel’s sustainability director. “This was a hugely demanding project, completed over the last year. It’s one which we hope will open the public’s eyes as to the importance of recycling and sustainability. Few people would think that discarded Christmas trees and old chewing gum could have a commercial or environmental value, but our engine oil shows this is the case.” According to the press release we received, Nexcel’s ambitious project has been inspired by the company’s innovative sealed-oil cell, which provides vehicle manufacturers with efficiency benefits and promotes used oil collection and re-refinement. “Our system has already been utilized by our technical partner, Aston Martin, for use in the visceral Vantage AMR Pro at last year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed. At that event, the car became the first to tackle the legendary hill climb using re-refined oils,” continues Ward-Zinski. “In 2016, Nexcel and Aston Martin also achieved a podium finish in the competitive VLN Championship at the most arduous racetrack in the world: the Nürburgring. Sustainability, and therefore re-refinement, are of growing global significance; hopefully this project helps demonstrate the extent of what is possible.” Hopefully, the price of an oil change will decrease after Christmas because of a dead tree surplus. The most significant challenges of the project included the yielding of phenols and catechols from the waste to be used as antioxidants, forming the basis of the chemical additives required. Nexcel’s experts worked with a zero-waste goal, and after significant research, analysis of component properties and trial and error, the blend consisted of 180 chewing gum pieces, 500ml of used fryer oil, one gallon of RTV silicone sealant, 14 household batteries, 1-liter of used engine oil, and an old Christmas tree. Extraction of components from these waste items enabled Nexcel scientists to produce 1-liter of automotive engine oil. Finally, a good use for this stuff. “Re-refinement of used oil can create a high-quality product when blended with new additives, but bulk feedstocks made up of many different types of used oils can complicate the process and reduce the yield. Nexcel’s oil-management system avoids this by segregating used engine oil, keeping it in the cell during collection,” says Ward-Zinski. “For this particular project, we wanted to make the oil from waste materials, and the challenge lay in the creation of the chemical additives. However, with creative utilization of modern technology there is huge potential in recycling.   11. Hi all, Need your advise on this; I did a servicing recently at a workshop in Ubi area. Decided to check the engine oil about 3-4days later, found that it was dark. Didn't think too much of it until my colleague saw and commented that the color was too dark. Compared his over 10years old car engine oil which was due for servicing, and the colors actually look similar. I contacted the workshop about this, and the boss and worker start telling me that the engine oil color is normal. They specifically say that only a clean/overhaul engine will have clean engine oil... It actually sounds bulls**tty to me, but I need advise on this. You can see the attached image of the engine oil, 4 days after servicing. Is this normal? Should I go and get them to change again? Engine oil is Xado, and I opt for the more expensive oil as it was suppose to be better. Car is Mazda 3 2014, bought in August 2015, last servicing done about 15k before this one.   13. Today went to Giant supermarket at Turf City and saw this new engine oil. Promotion now till 15 May. The certificate was shown at the display. Fully synthetic 5W40 17.90 for 4L bottle. Not sure if it is available in other Giant. Can buy?

  15. Saw this new brand made in Singapore in Carousell recently and decided to try. Bought 2 bottles and got my workshop friend to change for a small labor cost.So far after a week all good. Went back and bought 2 more bottles to standby. Apparently the boss said they are doing some soft launch promo price now and will be selling off the shelves in supermarkets soon.   16. How Bardahl Asia Pacific do their customer service My friends are using Bardahl Oil for our engine in the past few years and this year we stopped it. Because two engines have break down with this oil, we took some old oil and new oil to do some test. And the result coming out is not good. SN 5W-40 Old oil (We save some oil before we change the oil) Kinematic Viscosity, mm2/s @ 100C : 13.9 CCS @ -30C, cP : 5390 Pour Point, C : -39 TBN, mg KOH/g : 6.94 Phosphorus content % : 0.073 SN 5W-40 New oil (We bought some new oil from store) Kinematic Viscosity, mm2/s @ 100C : 14.36 CCS @ -30C, cP : 6350 Pour Point, C : -36 TBN, mg KOH/g : 9.31 Phosphorus content % : 0.157 With all the API standard, these two oils are in spec. However, we put 4L new oil into my engine and after running 5000km my engine alarm light is on. I go check with the repair shop about it, there are 2L oil left in the engine and the oil is extremely dark and sticky with mud. Few of my friends have this issue also, two of their engine have break down with this oil. We ask the Bardahl office what happen with their oil and they keep pushing all the response away and sent us different report about their oil don’t have any problems. We know that if there is a problem with a single car, we can let it go and try to fix it. However, there are more cars having these problems in these few months. And the Bardahl office accidentally cc me this email below during the conversation. We have to remain neutral until we know the root cause (which in many cases very difficult to determine). That’s why I said “according to the context”. Tell them that we will test the used oil samples, check our retain sample before we can conclude anything. At the same time, 顺便 tell them other possible causes that may lead to the problem. Thanks, See Tho After received this email, I ask for explanation of their attitude for solving the case and the they just make up a lot of excuses to avoid the oil and the email problems. I just ask all my friends to stop using their oil. This is a very terrible experience for us and for everyone who are using their oil, they sent us a lot of fake report to prove their oil is fine but I don’t believe it. And we are not going to use this oil anymore. Please be careful while choosing your engine oil.

  23. Hi, Would appreciate some advice here. Mine is a 2007 BMW 523i. A few days ago the warning light came on with "engine oil level too low" so on Sunday I topped up about 2L (maybe a bit more) of Shell Helix 5w40. Today when my wife drove it home the car started to shake badly, and after parking there was a lot of yellow/brownish liquid on the floor. I opened the bonnet and saw what appears to be coolant oozing out of the expansion tank. The tank cap still looked intact, though. The tank is a genuine BMW one and was replaced a few months ago only. As the car was still hot I didn't dare to open the expansion tank cap. Could this be due to engine oil overfill? But why would that cause coolant overflowing? Or the expansion tank or somewhere in the cooling system leaked (it seemed to be slowly leaking so I topped up with distilled water some time ago)? Could that cause the car to shake? No engine overheat warning came up, though. Any advice will be appreciated!
  24. Need some advice from bros... My Nissan Latio 2005 is now 11yrs old with 260K km mileage. I am the only owner and renewed COE for 5 yrs last May Problem I have now is the engine oil is going down almost weekly and i topup like 2L in 2 months Engine have never been dismantle, no sign of engine oil leaking from undercarriage, viacom passed last month with no sign of black smoke emission etc I cannot spot any sign of oil leak inside engine compartment as well. I have done engine compression test and all 4 cylinders are showing equal compression What could be other problem? at a loss of what to do now......
