  1. I am sure most of us reading this love the Lamborghini Gallardo in a way or two. The owner of this particular Gallardo probably thought that loving it means turning it into one of the fastest production tuned car on earth. That means having more than 2,000bhp with the help of two huge turbochargers. Yes, that is no typing error. Unfortunately for him, his Underground Racing tuned Gallardo LP570-4 Superleggera's V10 burst into flames instantly after crossing the finish line. Luckily for him, he safely got the car down to a standstill and escaped before anything bad happened. As seen in the video, the car looks pretty much fine other than the need to have a new engine block and some repainting. At least he broke the event’s top speed record by hitting 402km/h. That said, he is still pretty far away from the world record.   2. Like Porsche and Lamborghini, Ferrari has the habit of releasing stripped out, track focused models based on their mid-engined supercars. Following the lineage of the F360 Challenge Stradale and the F430 Scuderia, the Prancing Horse has gone all 'Superleggera' on the 458 Italia.   3. With a long standing tradition of building compact, open top sports cars that started with the S600 and ending with the S2000, Honda seems intent to get back into the game. After seeing the success Toyota/Subaru has had with the 86/BRZ, Honda is primed to one-up its rivals. According to a source within Honda, a new affordable sports car is being seriously considered, but don't expect something as high-end as the S2000 - think small, quick and light. The car would be small, probably even smaller than the Mazda MX-5, and come equipped with either a 1.3-litre or 1.5-litre in-line four with i-VTEC. Keep your expectations low on its power output, but thanks to its light weight which is rumored to sit around 900kg, the car should have adequate acceleration along with good handling and an overall agile driving experience. There's even talk that the "S1500" may come with a mid-engine layout, in the style of the Honda Beat. As for the car's design direction, Honda would either use the Japan-only N-ONE or make it look more like the current Civic. We reckon the N-ONE's styling would do justice because it pays homage to the iconic S600. Rumours of a new Honda roadster have appeared and disappeared with tide-like regularity since the moment the S2000 died, and none of them have come to pass. The NSX revival was followed by nearly a decade of will-they, won't-they rumours and telephone-game whispers before Honda actually buckled down and built something. It seems like the same thing could be happening here. Either way, let's wait for Honda to come up with this answer to the Toyota 86 and the Mazda MX-5 in 2015 or 2016.
  4. Let me get one thing straight. Personally I am not a fan of McLaren. I have nothing against the team, its Formula One drivers or the firm's awkward behaviour of naming its cars after fax machines. It's just like Manchester United vs Liverpool or Rafael Nadal vs Roger Federer or Tiger Woods vs well whoever he competes with. However there are one or two things I admire about McLaren. Firstly, its futuristic, yin-yang inspired factory at Woking, U.K. Secondly, the automaker's approach to cars and the firm's obsession with implementing technology. I have mentioned a countless number of times in the blog, as much as I like cars and the science, art and engineering behind it - I like technology, gadgets and gizmos. As such I cannot think of any other automaker in this era (perhaps besides Audi) that harnesses science, technology and cars as well as McLaren. Ferrari is a front to sell road legal Formula One cars to fund their F1 programme while Lamborghini is a German engineered Italian on steroids and performance enhancing drugs. Pagani is a new kid on the block that is all about theatricality, flamboyance and art. McLaren celebrated - with pride - their 50th anniversary as a racing team. 50 years is a long time, but the British firm has only created five road going cars thus far, and all five have been blockbusters in their own right. We have the iconic and legendary McLaren F1, the Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren, the MP4-12 and 12C and now we have the long awaited and alien looking McLaren 'Designed by Air' P1. The McLaren P1, together with the Porsche 918 and LaFerrari, welcome the next generation of hypercars and motoring in general. They are from three different countries in one continent but they share a similarity - they are all hybrids. Unlike its predecessors, the McLaren F1, Porsche Carrera GT and Enzo Ferrari, they are not purely naturally aspirated. Each feature an electric motor of some sort to boost performance to an already capable internal combustion engine. http://dai.ly/x14g7to In the case of the P1, the futuristic looking vehicle is unlike anything I have ever seen. The aesthetics have time travelled 10-15 years from the future, combined with the technical limitations of today. It is powered by a substantially revised 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine, coupled to a single electric motor, for a combined power output of 903bhp. Top speed is electronically limited to 350km/h, with the 0-100km/h standing start acceleration taking less than three seconds. The McLaren P1 will power from rest to 200km/h in less than seven seconds, and on to 300km/h in less than 17 seconds - a full five seconds quicker than the McLaren F1. Despite this, the P1 is also efficient with CO2 emissions less than 200g/km, and the ability to cover more than 10km in emissions free electric mode. Undergoing the final stages of testing before commencing on first customer deliveries soon, fellow self-confessed automotive and collector, Jay Leno, became the first man outside the development team at Woking, and Jenson Button, to drive the McLaren P1. The 12 minute video is pretty much split into two sections, a tour of the McLaren engineering centre that looks nothing short of a cathedral while the second part is Leno thrashing the all new hypercar on what I think is the Top Gear test track - who was gleaming with excitement every single minute of course. As mentioned at the start, I am not a fan of McLaren, but does that mean I should not be jealous?
  5. Based on the all new Audi A3 sedan, the Audi A3 Cabriolet makes its public debut at the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show. The car has grown from the preceding model, from 4,240mm to 4,420mm in length, with the wheelbase increased to 2,600mm. It also sits wider at 1,790mm, but stands shorter at 1,410mm. Additionally cargo load has increased by 60 litres to 287 litres. The A3 Cabriolet is around 50kg lighter than the previous model with a kerb weight of just over 1.3 tonnes. Like the saloon, the face of the Audi A3 Cabriolet is characterised by the single frame radiator grille, which is flanked by flat headlamp housings with either halogen or xenon bulbs. With 197bhp, 300Nm of torque and a top speed of 234km/h, a high performance version of the new 1.6-litre SIDI turbo engine will globally premiere in a Vauxhall Cascada at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show. The engine is one of the newly-designed Vauxhall four-cylinder SIDI (Spark Ignition Direct Injection) units and will join the existing 167bhp 1.6-litre SIDI turbo, available from its launch. The new power unit delivers 11 percent more power, including 300Nm maximum torque with overboost - 70Nm more than the comparable 1.6-litre turbo predecessor. At the heart of the SIDI turbo is a new engine block that can withstand a maximum combustion pressure of up to 130 bar in the cylinder. The block is made of grey cast iron with an aluminium baseplate. A different type of piston was also developed on top of a reduced compression ratio.   9. This is probably not your everyday car nor is it going to be setting any track records. But it is, by far, one of the coolest vehicles ever produced in recent years. The Ford Raptor debuted in 2010 as a SuperCab model with 310bhp, 5.4-litre V8 as a truck that is built to travel off-road at speeds that will break normal trucks. Since then it has been upgraded to a 6.2-litre V8, with 411bhp and 588Nm of torque and is mated to a six-speed automatic transmission. As with the 2010 version, the 2013 F-150 SVT Raptor is also available in a four-door SuperCrew model. With the introduction of the 2013 model, it features industry-first, direct-from-the-factory forged-aluminum conventional wheels that can be upgraded after purchase to extra-capable beadlocks. Beadlock wheels secure the edges of a tyre to the wheel between two surfaces so the tyre is unlikely to roll off the rim if it's aired down to very low pressure, providing extra grip on the trail.   10. An innovative 'green-architectural' idea implemented in a U.K. car dealership can actually be carried over here for our urban use. Said to be one of the most environmentally-friendly vehicle dealerships in the U.K., it will primarily retail and service all Fiat Group Automobiles products. Apparently the dealership is housed under a rain-catching roof. And it doesn't stop there as the green roof is only one part of an idea in a number of money and Gaia saving features that have been designed into the new two-acre T H White site in Swindon. The collected rain water can be reused for services like car washing or flushing of toilets. Even the used water from the valeting bays is recycled and waste engine oil is stored and used to heat the building.   11. How long is needed before an icon can be created? Many of us don't hold the answer - but Porsche does. Half a century of the 911 has seen it become one of the benchmarks - not just in its segment, but in the automotive industry. 50 years and seven generations - few models can claim a life as long-lived as the 911. That said, the 911's recipe has raised brows since its inception. Its engine is at the wrong end of the car. The looks? Many argue that it has hardly changed at all. But for Porschephiles - it is the timeless looks that, perhaps, hold the greatest appeal of all. It all started in 1963, when Ferdinand Alexander Porsche 'Butzi' penned the 911 to take over the 356. The second generation came in 1973 - almost a decade after the first 911's debut. It is also this generation that spawned the famous 'Turbo' variant, which was launched in 1976 - amidst an oil crisis. But that did not stop the 911 Turbo to become one of the greatest sportscar of its time. Codenamed '964', the third generation was massively revamped, carrying only 20 percent of its parts from its predecessor. The 'modern' 911 also incorporated new technologies, such as ABS, airbags, as well as Porsche's 'Tiptronic' automatic transmission and Carrera 4's all-wheel drive system. The fourth generation (codenamed '993') took the centre stage in 1993. As the last generation to sport an air-cooled flat-six engine, its status in history is firmly sealed. And it remains to be one of the favourites among fans of the marque. The fifth generation (codenamed '996') is very different from its forebears. At an event organised jointly by Porsche Cars GB (a Porsche-only car club in U.K.) and Silverstone Classic, a total of 1,208 911s gathered at the circuit. The scale of the event was never preceded, and sets a new world record. It is amazing how the 911 has progressed through the years. At the same time, we too wonder how long the 'evergreen' design is here to stay, and if it does, how will it look ten, twenty years down the road. Only time will tell.

  13. If you live in China (or plan to go there in the near future) and you have extra amount of money to spend, you may want to consider buying yourself a luxury coupe from German automaker BMW. Introduced for the first time back at this year's Detroit Motor Show, BMW is planning to start selling the M6 Gran Coupe in a wide range of countries, including China where the model has already made its debut. Let me remind you, to me, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe is nothing less than a very luxurious four-door coupe that will not hesitate to take you to the century sprint in only 4.2 seconds. Under its hood, the coupe packs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo engine which has the capability of delivering the power of no less than 560 horses in addition to 680Nm of torque in total. In order to sell the model in the origin country of pandas, the German automaker has teamed up with Brilliance, a local company, and they both have planned big things for the said coupe. Well, last but not least, as far as the price tag is concerned, BMW is demanding 2,390,000 yuan (around S$493,000) in exchange for a M6 Gran Coupe. Well, are you interested?
  14. Not so long ago, I tried to remind you to keep away from a country such as Russia. Thing is, the people - well mostly - seem really reckless there, especially while driving. It isn't that hard at all to find videos to prove this theory. Now, another incident - a tragic one too - has taken place in which I believe quite a number of people wonder how the country actually functions. While it may seem just like another car crash, this one is a lot more awful. In the video, we can see a Ferrari 458 Italia rear ending a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Judging from the fact that the rear bumper of the Mercedes was entirely ripped apart, I believe you have a good idea regarding the speed the Ferrari driver must have been driving at the moment. Amazingly, though, neither the Ferrari driver nor the Mercedes driver got seriously hurt. Yet, what was really tragic was the fact that the Italian supercar had actually knocked over a pedestrian, Nariman Gaynulov, 62, before crashing into the said Mercedes. As it turned out, the man driving the Ferrari 458 Italia is Larion Vuokila, 23, son of Alexander Zajonc, a Russian billionaire. Despite not getting seriously hurt, Vuokila was taken to the hospital soon after the incident. However, he tried to escape but has now been arrested by the police. I am not really sure what actually happened to Vuokila seconds before the crash. Was it that he tried to beat the red light? Or, was the crash triggered by Vuokila losing control of his supercar? Well, it seems like we
  15. If you want to find footages showing the most temperamental people on planet Earth, Russia is definitely the way to go. There have been numerous videos spread on the World Wide Web showing how messed up things in the country are. As a matter of fact, don't you even wonder how it functions as a country after watching those videos? Yet again, it seems that the people living there just never learn or they simply don't want to change. A video has been filmed again recently, showing how simply passing the road can turn into a fight that involves fists and even guns altogether in the middle of the city traffic! Therefore, even if you have the money to go and live in Russia, I would say that you better not think about it. Whereas road rage will turn into horns honking at most on our shores, the Russians aren't the type that takes things lightly, that's for sure.

Well, it's for your own safety. You see, you might end up being one unfortunate owner whose car roof got slashed. Yes, it happened! The Audi R8 GT Spyder you are about to see in the video no longer has its proper soft top as it used to. It seems that maybe, someone envies the owner of the car for being able to afford such an expensive car while he/she can't. However, it was very unfortunate for the owner as the Audi R8 GT Spyder is the most exclusive R8 in store, there're only 333 examples of it, you know. With that being said, whoever is capable of affording such a car must have an exclusive sense of joy and pride. With the roof slashed now, it seems that there'll no longer be such a sense, or will there? Well, the owner of the car takes things easy, it seems. To fix the slashed roof of his super car, the owner simply counts on tapes and a plastic garbage bag! It seems that all that matters to the owner is that water won't pour into the car when it rains.

  22. Want to be cool? Well, then you should be seen driving the coolest machine, Ferrari. According to a survey conducted by an U.K. company called Clear, over 20,000 participants and 678 brands, Ferrari came out on top in the automotive category and third overall, behind Apple and iPhone. This is the third year the poll is carried out. Ferrari improved its rating by a whopping 34 percent as compared to a year ago. In Singapore, the 'cheapest' way to be cool is to purchase a Ferrari California 360 which will set you back by $976,000 without COE. It's clearly hard to be cool on our tropical island.
  23. Back in the late 50s and early 60's, a Bluebird K7, essentially a turbo jet engined hydroplane was used by Britain's Donald Campbell, to set seven world water speed records. The hull was built by Samlesbury Engineering - now merged into BAE systems with the engine built by Metropolitan-Vickers. Now, they are back and will officially launch a Sports Car dubbed DC50 and the Bluebird GTL Formula E race car at the upcoming Sustainable MotoExpo on Saturday 28th September at the National Motor Museum, Beaulieu, U.K. At the Expo, Don Wales, nephew of Donald Campbell will launch the Bluebird DC50 electric sports car. They are limited to just 50 units to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Donald Campbell's land and water speed records in 2014. With peak power of up to 360bhp and acceleration to match a Porsche, the Bluebird DC50 is a two-door coupe with electrically operated 'scissor' doors. It has a range of up to 321km, depending on specification, and will be available in only one body colour
  24. The 2014 model year of the European spec Skoda Rapid is set to go on sale on 5th August 2013 with a series of updates. Most importantly, the compact Czech sedan will receive a new engine option in the form of a 1.6-litre TDI engine which is good for a modest 90bhp. The diesel engine will be mated to either to a seven-speed dual clutch automatic of a five-speed manual gearbox. An optional Green tec package adds green technologies such as low-rolling resistance tyres, brake energy regeneration and start/stop system. The 1.6-litre TDI Green Tec is said to return a fuel consumption figure of 3.9L/100km and emits CO2 at 104g/km. With the new engine, the Rapid is now available with two diesel engines and four petrol units. The refreshed Skoda Rapid will be offered with optional Xenon headlights. On the inside, the 2014 Rapid gets a new three-spoke steering wheel with four trim options, namely Graphite-Metallic, Silver Brushed, Piano White and Piano Black.
