  1. CNA news : iPads for police patrolling, higher pay for Home Team officers By Valerie Chang | Posted: 22 May 2012 2132 hrs SINGAPORE: Second Minister for Home Affairs and Minister in Prime Minister's Office S Iswaran revealed that technology will be a huge feature in the training of the Home Team. The Advanced Command Training System (ACTS) and Workpad are part of the technology to be leveraged. ACTS exposes officers to diverse training scenarios through a computer-generated virtual environment so as to better-equip them with strategic and operational decision-making skills in times of emergencies. This system will be launched next month. A prototype Workpad will be deployed at two Neighbourhood Police Centres (NPCs) namely Tampines and Bukit Merah East NPCs. Starting June, the customised iPad will be given as part of the patrol kit to the Community Policing Unit officers. It allows them to log information on-the-go. Mr Iswaran said that it is vital for the Home Team to be technologically savvy. "This is important for us stay ahead of the game, as technological advancements continue to change the complexion of crimes and security. As our adversaries exploit technology to commit crimes, we too must harness technology to stay ahead of them, and to enable our officers to work smarter." In July, officers can also look forward to enhanced salary packages and retirement benefits. Uniformed Junior Officers in the Home Affairs Uniformed Services (HUS) and Immigration and Checkpoints Authority of Singapore (ICA) can see a rise of 10 to 15 per cent in their monthly salary. While uniformed Senior Officers in these departments, at the ranks of Inspector to Superintendent, will receive a five per cent increase in their monthly salary. In addition, the retirement benefits of HUS Senior Officers on the INVEST Plan will be enhanced. A new retention incentive for ICA Senior Officers is being looked into. The details will be announced to officers soon. Mr Iswaran was speaking at the Home Team Promotion Ceremony on Tuesday. This year, a total of 4,474 officers received their promotion certificates in recognition of their stellar job performances. This includes 1,089 officers promoted within the Senior Officer ranks, and 3,291 officers promoted within the Junior Officer ranks. - CNA/ck What if a case reported on the scene, the officer login into the iPad and found that it is not within their boundaries to take the case and ask you to wait for the next officer from another division.... or the case classify into simple theft, serious theft, theft with weapon, theft in dwelling ...etc. and the officer after scaning his iPad, and say, not beyond his ability to handle, please wait here for the IO... They sure work smart.

  3. Just when back to RT and I've surprise now even SAF outsource the conducting of the RT/IPT/IPPT to FTs. Mainly the one I go are from Certis. Many of these FTs are fit looking and look professional, but the conducting of the RT/IPT remains to be desired. Some FTs are good, some FTs cannot make it. There's even 1 Female FTs which is either morale boosting (looks quite nice and sporty...) or demoralizing (probably fitter than you). Anyone had experience with these FTs? I seen them in Khaitb FCC. Other camps have? Do you think the RT/IPT is better conducted? Are FTs NSF or paid trainers? Note: The above picture is not a real representing of how RT is conducted. Usually, the number of Trainees in the session is 10x more than those in the picture and more chaotic. Many trainees look tired and many super overweight.... BTW FT = Fitness Trainer.
  4. A place he can call home By Gerald Goh The New Paper Wednesday, Mar 28, 2012 Being a financially prudent person led to him finally being able to afford his first bachelor pad more three years ago. Local comedian-host and Gold 90.5 DJ Hossan Leong told The New Paper: "Getting my own place for the first time was a major step forward in my life. "I'd always been renting a place to stay and it was quite unsettling to me over time, as I didn't have a place I could call my own. "I'm a natural saver. I find it quite gratifying to see my savings grow, so when I found the perfect place to stay, I said to myself, why not put those savings to good use?" Leong used his Central Provident Fund savings (in his Ordinary Account) and was able to make the 20 per cent downpayment. The 42-year-old's two-bedroom apartment near City Square Mall cost around $800,000, a sum that will be paid for with the aid of a 30-year housing loan. Leong added that even though the apartment was completed in July last year, he could only move in November as he had to see out the remainder of his rental contract with his landlord. "Housing in Singapore is really hard for the less affluent segments of society to afford. "It's been reported recently that a person who earns less than $1,000 a month is able to own a two-room Housing Board flat. "That may be technically possible, but I imagine he or she will have to spend almost every cent of their remaining income just to meet daily expenses. "Will the person have anything left over to save? " Leong also counts his endowment insurance plan, which his mum got for him as a child, as part of his saving strategy. "It's a good way to 'force' me to save about $100 each month," he said, adding that he took over the premiums from his mother when he was in his early 20s and started work as an actor. "The policy will mature in my 50s. It will include not only the accumulated interest, but also a yearly bonus." He added: "Saving some of what you earn each month isn't just for old age. "If something catastrophic happens to you and you're unable to work for a period of time, can you survive on what you've saved in the bank? "I feel you should save enough to prepare for a possible down period of at least half a year, should anything happen to you - touch wood! - and you are unable to earn an income." Working hard for the money Which could explain why Leong has packed his schedule to the brim. He was recently a guest judge during the auditions of the youth talent search competition okto Star and will be hosting a short segment of the local game show We Are Singaporeans at Singapore Day 2012 in New York in April. But his main job is still helping to run communication agency Paul Carr Consultancy, which he co-founded with friend and business partner Paul Carr. After the company's expenses have been accounted for, Leong pays himself a monthly salary of about $4,000. "Having a company to run helps me control my spending, as I'm responsible not only for my own personal finances but for my company's finances as well." And though he used to spend heavily on clothes before, that's a thing of the past, he says. "As I grew older, I thought to myself that I don't really care how many branded shirts I have any more. "Does anyone else honestly care if I wear branded clothes or not? The answer is no." This article was first published in The New Paper.
  5. Chinese man claims he found condom in infant formula The milk powder that was apparently affected is produced by American pharmaceuticals giant Abbott Laboratories. Wed, Mar 21, 2012 China Daily/Asia News Network A Hangzhou man got a rude shock while feeding his 14-month-old daughter recently. Mr Li Jiaming, 28, says he found half a condom in his daughter's formula, a brand of milk powder produced by American pharmaceuticals giant Abbott Laboratories. 'I was shocked when I discovered a condom in the baby's milk powder,' said Mr Li. 'I stopped feeding her the milk powder and got her some rice porridge instead.' A representative of Abbott Laboratories visited Mr Li's home last week. However, a spokesman denied 'the possibility of this item entering the product during the manufacturing process', due to Abbott's 'very stringent manufacturing methods and controls in place to prevent foreign material from entering the formulas'. Mr Li sent a sample of the milk powder - Abbott's Grain Plus 3 formula - to a commercial bureau to be tested. The results are expected on Friday. He also took his daughter to a hospital for blood tests after observing some erythema on her face, but said he doubted that it was caused by the milk powder.
  6. Critical Illness as we all know can bankrupt families. Do you guys have any CI coverage? If yes, to what age and what kind of coverage? I'm currently reviewing my plan, does it makes sense to extend coverage to 99 or 100 years? Or just cover till 60 then after that rely on MediShield?
  7. I was involved in a traffic accident whereby a pedestrian was involved. Not totally my fault and I have the right of the way. Anyway, as long as a car accident involved a pedestrian, the driver will be held liable no matter how. I reported the accident to my insurance company. The claim officer of my insurance company advised me not to go for private settlement as the pedestrian might jacked up the injury claim if that pedestrian comes to aware that can claimed from my insurance company. My NCD is reduced from 50% to 20% and the premium for my next year renewal quoted by my present insurance company had increased more than 2 times my present premium, even though there is no claim from the pedestrian yet. The claim officer explained a sum of money had been reserved for the injury claim as injury claim is opened for a period of about 5 to 6 years. The claim officer also added that if there is no claim from the pedestrian for 2 years, my NCD will reverted back to 50% and I will be refunded for the extra premium paid during these 2 years. I then asked the claim officer will I still get the refund if I switch to other insurance company. The claim officer said that I will still get the refund from other insurance company if there is no claim as that they will checked and verified with my present insurance company. It is the assurance of refund that I decided not to go for private settlement . I called another insurance company for a quotation for the my insurance renewal. They quoted me about the same amount of premium as what my present insurance company quoted me. However, they told me that there is no refund from them even there is no claim from the pedestrian. I then told them of all what the claim officer had told and assured of refund me, they still told me this is not the practice for their company. The only thing is my NCD will be inceased by 10% if there is no further accident claim, which is the normal practice for all company. If there is no refund at all, it seems that getting a private settlement might be better as my NCD will be reinstated back to 50% and my premium for next renewal will be affected. Besides, the pedestrian suffered very minor injury thus the amount to be paid most likely will not be high. What you guys think?

  9. How many of you have come across this type of incident when you comment on a car or something and someone you know and it's close to you just shoot back at you abruptly don't critise when you don't even have the money to buy... To me I think it's really unfair and annoying to be told off this way especially when it's someone close to you. If always get told off this way, then how do we communicate? Always talk to ourself since we are unable to own alot of things out there in the world because we are 'poor' and become a retard

  11. Lasik eye surgeon charged with cheating healthcare provider By Alvina Soh | Posted: 25 November 2011 1448 hrs SINGAPORE: An eye surgeon was charged on Friday with cheating a healthcare provider of more than S$474,000. Fifty-one-year-old Marc Tay Tze-Hsin allegedly cheated integrated healthcare provider, Pacific Healthcare Specialist Services (PBSS), on 11 occasions between December 2005 and December 2006. He is said to have dishonestly concealed the fact that he had been paid between S$2,520 and S$83,000 for each surgery he performed at The Lasik Surgery Clinic on behalf of PBSS knowing the amount belonged to PBSS. He will be back in court again on January 6 next year. It boils down to the fact that even doctors are human. and which human doesn't have needs, wants and desires. if they dun have, they are not human. Saving lives, yes, otherwise why would they want to become doctors? but basic human characteristics do not change.
  12. Monks face pressure of foreign competition Income from prayer sessions down as foreign monks charge lower rate Local monk Ang Juat Chong says he spoke to his MP, Mr Yaw Shin Leong, about unlicensed monks working in Singapore. -- ST PHOTO: SAMUEL HE Some monks here are feeling the heat of competition provided by their foreign counterparts. n particular, the local monks claim that foreign monks, who are mostly from China and Malaysia, are undercutting them by charging up to 50 per cent less for prayer sessions conducted at funeral wakes. Mr Ang Juat Chong, 59, a Singaporean who has been a Buddhist monk for the last 18 years, said his monthly income has gone down by as much as 70 per cent in the last two years because of this. 'Local monks charge about $1,200 to do Buddhist rites at funeral wakes, but these foreign monks charge only $600 or $700. So of course, funeral parlours will prefer to hire them,' he told The Straits Times yesterday. He also suggested that some of these monks are not supposed to be chanting prayers at these wakes. He said he knows of at least one 'monk' from Malaysia who is here on a work permit and supposed to be working as a salesman. He added that there are real monks who are here on work permits that state they are doing religious work. But, he claimed, that permit does not allow them to be hired by funeral operators to chant prayers at wakes. Mr Ang, who is based at a temple in Lorong 7, Geylang, said he has approached the authorities about this and also saw Hougang MP Yaw Shin Leong about it. Mr Yaw mentioned the meeting in a Facebook post on Thursday. Other Buddhist monks said they have also noticed an influx of foreign monks in recent years. Reverend Ru Hong, 55, of Guat Hoon Vegetarian temple in Kembangan, estimated that more than half of all monks here are foreigners, up from about 30 per cent two or three years ago. He, too, claimed that while some of these foreign monks are real monks at home, they are being hired out to chant at wakes here despite being on other forms of work passes or even social visit passes. Rev Ru Hong, who has been holding prayer sessions at funerals and other ceremonies for more than 10 years, added that these monks are mostly hired to do prayers by middlemen such as undertakers. But he added that his takings have not been affected. Mr K.C. Low, 61, who is from a Buddhist temple in Rangoon Road, said his income has dropped by at least 30 per cent in the past five years. 'The foreign monks are cornering the market, and from what I heard, some of them are willing to do prayers for just $200 or $300,' he said. Mr Z. Chin, 63, who took to the cloth a decade ago and is based in a Buddhist temple in Geylang, said that some months go by without him getting called to conduct a single prayer session at funeral wakes. Three or four years ago, he would do around three sessions every month. The influx of monks is especially high during the Seventh Month Hungry Ghost period, said the disgruntled monks. Mr Ang estimated that at least 100 such foreign monks operate here during this period because of the higher volume of prayers and other ceremonies. While foreign monks may offer cheaper rates, Reverend Sek noted that they may not be familiar with local customs or praying procedures. Still, Mr Calvin Tang, 35, an undertaker with Singapore Casket, said Singaporean families normally 'won't know the difference even though the foreign monks chant in a different way from local ones'. Rev Ru Hong said local Buddhist monks go through a head-shaving ceremony witnessed by three senior monks in a monastery. They also have a booklet that certifies that they have learnt all the rules and procedures and have vowed to abide by them, and this booklet is given out by temples.

  16. ...to get the 2 gay brudders to marry Debate over Bert and Ernie's relationship status has endured since the duo first appeared in 1969. - Article originally posted at TheVine.com.au Sesame Street's unofficial couple, Bert and Ernie, are being urged to make it official. Debate over their relationship status has endured since the duo first appeared in 1969. Sesame Street says they're just best friends, "created to teach preschoolers that people can be good friends with those who are very different from themselves." An online petition - at 3,700 signatures at time of writing - is now calling for the long time friends to be married. The petition is seeking to teach tolerance and acceptance by either allowing Bert and Ernie to wed, or to look to include an LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) character into the childrens show. Sesame Street has always sent a progressive message to its viewers, having introduced different races and cultures to the show and acknowledged a HIV-positive Muppet, but the idea of a gay wedding seems to have angered many. Bullying in the LGBT community has become an even bigger issue in recent months and this led to the launch of the It Gets Better project late last year as a response to the startling number of teen suicides in America. It has since received a lot of celebrity support. Comments on Twitter and on other articles today indicate exactly the kind of problems these campaigns face, which is namely homophobia. "I don't mind gays. But I draw the line here. I don't want Australia to promote being gay to my kids." "This is a kid's program with puppet characters, but certain people with weird ideas want to turn it into something that's quite sickening to normal people." The fact is that it's 2011 and gay people actually do exist in real life and moreover, they can be quite normal. So whether this is a 'joke' petition or not, it surely can't hurt to talk about makingSesame Street a queer friendly place so that each and every kid out there can know that they're not the only one looking like they look or feeling like they feel. Although Jezebel asks, "Is it even worth showing a gay marriage to kids if it's not even real? Maybe we should try to concentrate our efforts on allowing gays to legally wed throughout our entire country." Read more: http://www.smh.com.au/entertainment/tv-and...l#ixzz1Ull362M2

  18. From CNA news : S'pore jumps 3 spots to become 6th most expensive city in Asia SINGAPORE : Singapore has jumped three places this year to become the sixth most expensive city in Asia for expatriates to live in, according to the latest cost of living survey from ECA International. The company, which provides solutions for firms sending their staff overseas, said the continued strength of the Singapore dollar against major currencies had pushed the republic up the global ranking. ECA International also said prices of goods and services commonly purchased by international assignees have risen at much faster rates in Singapore than in other developed locations in the region. It said such goods and services now cost almost three per cent more in Singapore than in Hong Kong. Just a year ago, they cost five per cent more in Hong Kong than here. Singapore rose to the 36th spot from 68th in the global ranking in one year. ECA International pointed out that Singapore is now more expensive for international assignees than Hong Kong, New York, Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Shanghai. ECA International said that although Japan is the only Asian country surveyed where the actual cost of goods in the ECA basket of goods has fallen, a strong currency and already higher costs for goods mean that the cost of living for assignees is significantly more than in other locations in the top ten ranking. Globally, Tokyo heads the top 10 list followed by Oslo, Nagoya, Stavanger in Norway, Yokohoma, Zurich, Angola's capital Luanda, Geneva, Kobe and the Swiss capital of Bern. The region's top 10 most expensive cities are: 1) Tokyo 2) Nagoya 3) Yokohama 4) Kobe 5) Seoul 6) Singapore 7) Hong Kong 8) Beijing 9) Shanghai 10) Busan - CNA/al So.......................why some paid millions per year still maintain SG cost of living it is 'affortable'

  20. Hey guys, Just wanted to share an experience of mine. I was freaking robbed in broad daylight! It happened when I was in JB for my favourite bah kut teh lunch. As I couldn't find a parking lot in front of the shop (main road), I drove to the back lane to park my car next to a few others. After finishing up a sumptuos meal , whilst getting into the car but yet to close my door, a man claimed to have aids and a needle came to ask for money. He threathened to stab with me the needle if I do not give him the cash. Being a hot blooded person, I almost wanted to wrestle with him but seeing my gf was in the car too, I decided not to be silly. I gave that man RM50 when he wanted RM100. Luckily for me, I usually dont keep a lot of cash in my wallet and seeing that I dont have much, he went away after taking the money. It was a horrifying incident as far as my gf is concerned but I am so damn angry that I was robbed  Anyway, I thought it would be informative to share this out with all. Moral of the story is 1. Try not to park in less traffic area even in broad day light 2. Scan through to see if there is/are any suspicious people hanging around 3. Be alert, dont let your guard down and always be ready 4. Never place too much cash in your wallet (in case he insisted to see your wallet) 5. Always have a "weapon" stored near your sit. Usually in the form of steering wheel lock. Just in case. But if RM50 can solve the matter, dont attempt to fight. Be safe all. Cheers PS: I just thank God that RM50 solved the issue and we're still where we are now.
  21. SORRY!TYPO HEADER! i mean is there even a "correct" procedure? Reminds me of an incident i witness on saturday night at an open-space carpark. the carpark i was at was full.it was prolly 20 lots in total. there was a car (A) waiting for an empty lot (with hazard lite on) slightly in the middle of the entire carpark. awhile later, 1 car was leaving so car (A) slowly reverse. out of no where, a pickup drove in n parked into the lot. car (A) honk for the longest time. (think my dead grandma oso will wake up from her grave) but pickup still take his time adjusting his vehicle in the empty lot. so car (A) got out from his vehicle and walked towards the pickup. car (A) : "excuse me, i was waiting for the lot.. basic courtesy la. i was waiting already." pickup : *swings open his door and bang onto the door of the car parking beside* "WHAT COURTESY?! f--k U LA!!!" pickup driver walks away with his gf pretending to look at her handph. car (A) tongue tied and walk back to his car, FHL, carried on waiting for the next empty lot. so my question is, is there a quick and fast rule to first-come-first-serve in public carpks like this?

  25. Bros, Just saw something interesting 2 days ago. Was driving along Hougang Ave 3, near Singapore Girls' Home. Stopped by a traffic light and notice a guy standing at the kerb of the opposite traffic. Caught my attention as he was standing near a bus stop but don't seem to be waiting for bus as he was not looking at the direction of on-coming traffic and was hiding behind a billboard. Soon realise that he was manning a camcorder on a tripod. The direction of the camcorder was pointed to shoot the car number plate at the back. Each time a car drive by the bus lane, he would write some notes in his book, I presumed to verify against camcorder records. So bros be warned, stay out of the bus lane!! You may not even know you got shot!! Regards DD
