  1. Lai liao loh, going to start soon...Hi 5! BETTER THINK THRICE BEFORE BUYING THAT SET OF WHEELS!! They are mainly in the heart of residential areas. By Christopher Tan MOTORISTS can expect to pay more over the next few months to use the roads when five new ERP gantries are up, many in the heart of residential areas. The gantries are in Upper Bukit Timah Road (outside Hume Park), Toa Payoh Lorong 6, Upper Boon Keng Road, Kallang Bahru Road and Geylang Bahru Road. All except the ones in Toa Payoh Lorong 6 and Geylang Bahru Road have been completed. The Land Transport Authority has not announced when these new gantries will be switched on, but already residents are concerned why their neighbourhoods are targetted. Commenting on the gantry outside Hume Park, Bukit Timah resident Mr Burven Lee, 43, said: 'The road here does get jammed up. But will a gantry solve the problem?' 'My feeling is that it will just redistribute traffic around,' the director of a statutory board added. Toa Payoh resident 68-year-old retiree Tony Chan wanted to know why the gantry at Toa Payoh Lorong 6 is sited near the entrance to the residential area. The LTA spokesman explained that the location of the gantry is unlikely to affect residents as it charges motorists entering into Toa Payoh from Braddell Road who add on to the traffic in the area. He added that if gantries were at exit points, more Toa Payoh residents would be affected. Also it would plug a gap in series of gantries forming an outer cordon around the city. The new gantries are part of the LTA's plans to have an 'outer cordon' to control traffic going into the city.

  5. SMALL FEE HUGE FINE Payment for packing duty-unpaid cigarettes: $70 each 3-year jail term for men unable to pay $13 million fine By Andre Yeo December 28, 2007 THEY were each paid $70 to work as packers. But Prakash Mathivanan, Mohamed Hassan Peer Mohamed and Viknesh Mathivanan ended up facing multi-million dollar fines. The reason? They were packing duty-unpaid cigarettes. The excise duty evaded was $654,720 and since the fine for the offence is between 15 and 20 times the amount evaded, the trio were looking at a fine of $9.8 million to $13.1 million. In what the judge called one of the worst and largest cases of its kind, the court heard that the men had been recruited by a syndicate to pack cigarettes at an office unit at Enterprise One Building, Kaki Bukit Road 1. On 7 Aug at about 6.20pm, Singapore Customs officers raided the unit and arrested the three men. They found 2,000 cartons, each with 200 sticks of duty-unpaid cigarettes, inside a Singapore-registered van at Kaki Bukit. They found another 4,800 cartons each with 200 sticks of similar cigarettes in the office. The three men were questioned and admitted dealing in the cigarettes, which together with the van, were seized. On the same day around 6.15pm, Customs officers conducted another raid and arrested two other suspects at the multi-storey carpark of Katong Plaza. They found 1,000 cartons, each with 200 sticks of duty-unpaid cigarettes, in another van. Five minutes later, officers nabbed another two suspects at the carpark of Block 316, Ubi Avenue 1. Another 1,500 cartons of similar cigarettes were found from a third van. RECRUITED Investigations revealed that Prakash, Mohamed and Viknesh were recruited by a man named 'Ruben' to pack the cigarettes. 'Ruben' is still at large. While the trio were hard at work, two vans came separately and the cigarettes were loaded into them. The vans were then left in an unknown destination. The three men told officers they were to have been paid $70 each for the job. All in, 9,300 cartons of duty-unpaid cigarettes, weighing a total of 1,860kg, were seized. The three men pleaded guilty but their lawyer, Mr Low Hui Hui, said that as they were unable to pay the fines, the maximum imprisonment of three years' jail would be more than adequate. District Judge Liew Thiam Leng sentenced them to three years' jail. TACKLE PROBLEM In his judgment, he noted that cigarette-smuggling offences were highlighted in Parliament when the Customs Act was amended in 1966 to tackle the problem posed by those who dealt in cigarettes without paying excise duties. He said the number of cigarettes smuggled in this case was large. It would have involved planning and a group of people to pack, load and unload the cigarettes. He said figures provided by Customs showed that revenue loss from excise duty evaded through cigarette-smuggling had been increasing in the last five years. Judge Liew pointed out that cigarette-smuggling was harmful to the country both socially and economically. Cheaper cigarettes would make it easier for under-aged people to pick up the habit. And licensed retailers would be affected. He noted that the three men were part of a cigarette-smuggling syndicate and this called for a deterrent sentence. The three men had faced two charges each. The first charge was proceeded with and was for dealing in 1,860kg of cigarettes without paying the $654,720 excise duty. The second charge was for not paying the $58,600 GST for the cigarettes. This was taken into consideration during sentencing. The three men are appealing. http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,...,151775,00.html proven! the higher the tax the higher the chance of pple smuggling. if this is so much of a deterrent, den is obviously not effective against smuggling

  12. My wife & I has a small argument over the new face-lift Honda City recently. We were shopping for a new car and the city was on our list. We both loved the Vtec engine which as both powerful and economy as well as the spacious boot & Ultra seats. But we can't agree on the styling of the car. For me I think the FL City looks much better then its predecessor. It finally managed to look more proportioned and sporty but wife begs to differ. She seems unable to shake of the ghost of the pre-FL city and insisted that it still looks funny. I understand that beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder but I am hoping to get your personal comments here fm car lovers, what do you think?

  14. A newbie question. For a sedan, I have seen subwoofers firing at the boot cavity and have also seen woofers mounted the other way around - ie facing the back of the rear seat, pounding against the back of the rear seats. Is there any difference if placed one way or another? Will it sound different? Will it be dictated by the type of cabinet loading eg bass reflex vs infinite baffle.

  19. Pics of the face-lifted Audi A4. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Revised A4 Breaks 3? You weren't supposed to see this new model until next year - but Audi has taken the wraps off early in a bid to get one over its main rivals. In a bid to steal a march on BMW's forthcoming new 3-Series, the Ingolstadt company has facelifted the A4 ahead of schedule. And as these official pictures reveal, the model now features Audi's extended grille, bringing it in line with the A8, A6 and A3 Sportback. The front end also includes more prominent bonnet creases, sculptured clear-lens headlamps and a deeper front bumper. Combined with new side panels, these changes give the car a more muscular stance. Around the back, two-piece tail-lights - which resemble those of the Nuvolari sports car concept revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in 2003 - complete the A4's revamp. Audi's design team has boosted the cabin with updated seat trims and additional aluminium touches, while the new steering wheel echoes the grille. Available as a saloon or Avant estate, the revised A4 will take centre stage at the Paris Motor Show later this month. When it goes on sale here in January, it will come with a choice of 10 engines. New to the range will be the 255bhp 3.2-litre FSI V6 and 200bhp 2.0-litre T FSI direct-injection petrol units. There are also 140bhp 2.0-litre TDI and 204bhp 3.0-litre V6 TDI diesel powerplants. As before, flagship S4 variants are to get a 344bhp 4.2-litre V8 petrol engine under the bonnet. These range-toppers will be distinguishable from lesser versions by their unique 18-inch alloy wheels, quad exhaust pipes and different front grille. In an attempt to make the A4 as good to drive as the 3-Series, Audi has uprated the suspension and brakes, while safety is improved across the line-up, too. All A4s now get Audi's latest stability system, ESP8, and come with a clever brake disc wipe function that's designed to aid stopping power in wet conditions. Other standard safety kit includes six airbags and active head restraints.
  20. The new face-lifted Alfa Romeo 147 has just been unveiled, as revealed in the latest Auto Express magazine. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freshened-up 147 Shows Its Face Thinking of ordering a new Alfa 147? You might want to hold fire for six months - this is the facelifted version and it will hit showrooms in spring. The front end has been completely re-styled with a larger grille, fresh headlamps and a new bumper and wings. At the rear, the tailgate and lamps have been smartened up, too. But the main improvements are under the skin, where there's a debut for a more powerful diesel engine, a modified gearbox and a new suspension set-up. The car is unveiled at this week's Paris Motor Show. A spokesman said: "Our revised 147 should arrive in UK showrooms around February or March." The new oil-burner is a 150bhp 1.9 JTD 16v Multijet unit, which slots into the range alongside the existing powerplants. The gearbox is a development of the firm's Selespeed transmission, and offers drivers the choice of changing cogs with either stick-shift or steering wheel controls. The suspension now includes an optional comfort setting, designed to improve the ride.

  23. What do you guys think? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This is the shape of things to come from SEAT, and it's in the form of what the firm is calling a Multi Sport Vehicle. The car seen here is the Altea, and while it's technically a concept, bosses have confirmed it will go into production and keep the name. It will be sold alongside the Leon, offering customers a more practical and versatile alternative. What's more, insiders say the large grille housing the SEAT badge, coupled with the sleek shape of the headlamps, will feature on all new models. The Altea is based on the Salsa concept, driven in issue 721, although that car's non-opening bonnet and two-piece tailgate have disappeared. In profile, the smooth lines and low stance of the Altea give it a performance-oriented look, while still offering mini-MPV-like space and practicality. Styling differences on the production car - due to be built on the new VW Golf platform and set to arrive in 2004 - will be minimal. The two individual back chairs are likely to be scrapped, replaced by a more conventional bench seat, while the large 19-inch alloys will be on the options list. But the windscreen wipers which tuck up vertically against the A-pillar when not in use, and rear door handles hidden in the quarterlight, should remain. Inside, the show car cabin's mix of aluminium and leather will be toned down. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre 150bhp FSI petrol unit - the first time a SEAT has been powered by one of VW's FSI engines. It will definitely make production. Power is fed to the front wheels via a six-speed auto gearbox with sequential Tiptronic controls.
