  1. what is wrong with these young people nowadays, the ah mah already 80 years old cannot wait meh? bloody idiot
  2. Been thinking for a long time on which car to buy and can't arrive at a conclusion. Background: My family of 4 (including me, my wife, a toddler and an infant) is looking for a new car. I drop my toddler at school before going to work everyday. I will also fetch my parents/parents in law around maybe 2-3 times per month for outings. I drive to Malaysia (Ipoh) around 2 times per year and probably have some road trips to other places in Malaysia as well. Budget: $120k Features (good to have): Electric tailgate/boot, Keyless entry, Blindspot detection. I'm looking at only AD cars Toyota Wish, Mitsubishi Outlander and the latest Toyota Harrier Turbo (price exceeds my budget a lot but I like this car a lot and it has all the features I want) which will launch in July 2017. Not looking at Honda HRV/Vezel. 1. Toyota Wish (price is around $110k) Pros: - Spacious interior. - Fuel consumption quite ok at 12-13km/l. - Adequate power. - Budget friendly. Cons: - Dated engine. Think the Wish was last launched in 2009 or 2010 and then had a facelift 2-3 years ago. - Very basic interior. - Does not have many features. The Wish is just like a Toyota Altis with 3 rows of seats. - Does not have rear air con vents. 2. Mitsubishi Outlander (price is around $120k) Pros: - Spacious interior. - Packed with features not found in Wish. - I love driving SUV. Wife mentioned that she prefers higher cars though it's not a priority. Cons: - Bad fuel consumption. Seems like it can only achieve 8-9km/l as it's a 2.4 SUV. - Read reviews that power is lacking despite it being a 2.4 SUV. - 3rd row is not that spacious despite it being a bigger car than Wish. 3. Toyota Harrier Turbo (price is likely to be $160k) Pros: - Spacious and luxurious interior. - Powerful engine (go NSH overtaking no problem). - Fuel efficient at 10-12km/l (as achieved by Lexus NX. Harrier should get better FC). - Packed full of features which I want. - Has air con vents for 2nd row. Cons: - Burst budget big time. Will be straining my finances if I go with Harrier. - Does not have 3rd row of seats. My own thoughts so far (but welcome to have more comments and opinions): - Heart is with Toyota Harrier but wallet says no. - Wallet says go for Toyota Wish which is an outdated car with not much features. - My wife and me prefer SUV but the pricing of Wish and the interior space make us consider it. - I have been driving 2 generations of Toyota Altis (for 10 years) and 2013 Lexus RX (for 2 years) company car. Really like driving a SUV - the feel and higher driving height is really different from a sedan. - Mitsubishi Outlander seems like an in-between as it has good features but read that FC is really bad. - I intend to drive at least 5 years. If huat then change car, if bo huat then drive 10 years. What are your thoughts guys? Thanks in advance!

  5. I wish to present a hypothetical question. What if your son, impregnate his girlfriend, and both are still at a schooling age ( say, Uni level) ? Suppose both of them don't have career, little experience in relationship to make a lifetime commitment and to form a family. What are the options and what will you do as a parent ? Please discuss and share your wisdom, thanks.
  6. @porker is in good company. @enye dun pray pray, maybe he got blue blood.....good for @blueray who into blue film...hahahha

  8. Need some advice. Just moved in to my new house for a few months already.. Brought in my parents in law + bro in law to live together as they do not have a place of their own. To cut story short. My wife experienced a very bad encounter with his father. I will not list them all but a few only He brushed his hands against my wife’s bottom while he was walking behind her While my wife was walking in the house, he was sitting at the dining and staring at my wife’s chest area. How she knew this was that she was looking at him right in the face all along. While she was napping in the living room, she opened her eyes and caught her dad staring at her. When he notice that she’s awake, he walked off abruptly without saying anything. This incidents has caused her so much distress and lose all the respect she had towards him. She has been locking herself in the room while im at work and feeling shitty every single day. Crying every time she recalled these incidents. She felt that she has been sexually violated. Tried telling her mom, but she brushed it off as it could be an accident and it can happen anywhere. Even told my wife to forget all about it. It has been a few weeks and the tension at home is really tight. What should I do? Should I confront him? Feeling shitty thinking about this issue. Having a new and big house doesn’t mean happiness is guaranteed. Dang!
  9. The family of a dead national serviceman is suing the Singapore Armed Forces for allegedly failing to provide a safe training environment. http://str.sg/JFE Private Dominique Sarron Lee, 21, died in April 2012 after an allergic reaction to smoke grenades during an exercise. Pte Lee's platoon commander and the exercise's chief safety officer are also being sued for negligence.
  10. Dear MCFers I don't know whether this is against MCF rules but I think let us make a pledge to donate some money to the family of late Mr Chandra Mogan who died in a freak accident in the Budget Terminal. Looking at the wife and 3 kids without the sole breadwinner, I think wwe ought to do something for them. Can the moderators set-up a donation drive for MCFers to send money or gifts in kind to the family. Thank you very much Tigerwoods.
  11. As the topic, wonder why Japanese family cars always have lower performance than same category Conti cars, Conti cars almost all used TC in their engine, even if 1.6L normal family car also can easily produce above 150hp, and with very good FC about 17km/L, but same category Japanes car non-TC only can produce 110 to 120hp and bad FC 13km/L I don't understand, since Japan is a very take care energy saving country, and TC can save fuel and increase power, except Subaru like to use TC and other maker's racing cars to use TC, why does they don't use TC on common family cars?
  12. Do you have any traditions that you practise during Christmas? Anything that you have done year after year? For us - there is nothing specific, other than allowing the kids to open one present on Christmas Eve. We do put up a big tree every year though - and love putting presents under it. Extended family coming round to our place for a Christmas lunch - we'll be about 18-20 pax or so for the afternoon. One thing that I miss at this time of year - business Christmas parties. I come from a small town, and it is rather traditional for service providers (eg: the local garage, convenience store etc) to have an afternoon of drinks and talk cock for their customers. Quite fun in a small town kind of way. And as a follow up bonus question - do you see Christmas as a Christian or a Secular celebration? Do you go to Church? For us, it is all about family and renewing ties - basically what reunion dinner is the Chinese community or Hari Raya is to the Muslim I think. I don't go to church, and don't celebrate anything overtly Christian during this period. In fact, I am slightly annoyed at my nephew who is going to church twice on Christmas Day.
  13. Hi guys, Some of you have responded to my previous post of asking what what is the allowed number of stays in Taiwan and Japan with no visa. As it turn out now, the other company prefer that I quit and join them full time in Japan. So I'm now contemplating if I should join them for a couple of reasons - I liked the job there - Pay wise is not too bad, about 20% more than my current salary, inclusive of employer portion of CPF contribution. Apartment is provided. - I don't like my work here. Being in IT professional, I find myself stagnating here.... On the other hand, - I will need to be stationed in Japan. They proposed to allow me to go back for 2 weeks every 10 weeks but I am requesting to allow me to come back for 2 weeks every 6 weeks. I still have kids in primary school. - Not young anymore. Coming to 40. I had been through such experience 5 years ago but that time, the company just allowed me to go back a week every 4 months and relationship with wife really strained. After a year, I had to quit and come back to look for another job. This time round, it was my wife who suggested why don't I go back to Japan to work since I like the work there and I wasn't happy here.... She was happy to see the improved arrangement on the better salary structure and more time allowed to come back to SG as I started discuss with the Japan counterpart.... So guys who had experience in going oversea to work without family. How do you guys cope?

  17. I read this article with sadness. The kids must be scared shit. I remembered SAF flew a C130 armed with SOF soldiers into Cambodia to evacuate Singaporeans during the late 90s unrest. I hope they can do the same for these poor family even though there are only 5 of them. http://news.asiaone.com/news/asia/spore-woman-and-kids-stuck-yemen
  18. Kids 39% more likely to buy parents' car brand Children are a blank slate. They draw their habits, behaviors and mannerisms from their parents. If you subscribe to that viewpoint, then this study out of Michigan State University won't really come as a surprise. According to Soren Anderson, and MSU economist, kids are 39 percent more likely to buy cars from the brands their parents support. So, if your parents buy Jeeps, there's a strong correlation that you're going to end up behind a seven-slat grille at some point. Same goes for Cadillac owners, Toyota fans and Bimmerphiles. The on-going study drew this correlation after surveying 4,300 adult children and their 2,600 parents. The nationwide surveys were held every two years between 1999 and 2011 and brands were bunched by ownership, so for example, rather than listing Cadillac, Chevrolet, Buick and GMC independently, General Motors was the sole option. "In theory, these findings could change the way automakers price and market their cars," Anderson claims. "Is this really about the cars or could it be other factors, like parents and children tending to be more similar to each other than other people? We're pretty sure it has something to do with the cars themselves." The results of Anderson's study will be published in the Journal of Industrial Economics. Scroll down for a press release on the topic. http://www.autoblog.com/2014/10/16/kids-39-more-likely-buy-parents-car-brand/?ncid=edlinkusauto00000016

  20. SINGAPORE - All they wanted was a way to send their 92-year-old mother to the hospital. The Chngs called the 1-777 Non-Emergency Ambulance Service (NEAS) last month. An ambulance operator quoted them $180 and some additional charges for the trip. But at the end of the 30-minute ride from their home in Choa Chu Kang to Singapore General Hospital, the family was hit with an $800 bill. Some of the add-ons on the bill included $150 for oxygen, $80 for bandages and $200 for painkillers. The private ambulance operator, Singapore Medical Care Training and Services (SMCT), has since been suspended by the NEAS Quality Committee. The Ministry of Health said it had received eight complaints, including the Chngs', since SMCT joined the NEAS network on Feb 8. It is understood that most of the complaints were about overcharging. The Chngs' mother, Madam Lim Soon Oh, had a fall at home the day before and the pain was causing her to skip her meals and medicine. Worried, her three sons decided to send her to the hospital for a checkup on May 10. Mr Edwin Chng, 56, an engineer, needed an ambulance as his mother could not get into a car or taxi as her fall prevented her from bending her knees. When the vehicle arrived, the paramedic told the family that the mother needed painkillers. On the ride to the hospital, paramedics put her on an intravenous (IV) drip and administered oxygen. They also placed two bandages on her knees. One of her sons, Mr Jason Chng, 53, said he did not think of questioning the ambulance attendant or to find out the cost of the various treatments. Their brother, Mr David Chng, 66, a chauffeur, went along with the ambulance. He said: "They showed me a list, everything was a minimum of $10, $20. We thought that since they are professionals, they should know what they are doing. We didn't want to stop them... After all, we want the best for our mother. I thought that at most, it would cost $400." Despite the shock of the bill, they decided to pay up because Mr Edwin Chng's and his mother's identity cards were with the ambulance staff. "All we wanted was to transport my mum to the hospital, any additional treatment she needed could be provided by our family doctor, or even the hospital," said Mr Jason Chng. When The New Paper contacted SMCT in early June, its spokesman said: "We are a private emergency ambulance operator with no subsidy or third party support or funding. Our charges may appear to be high as they are non-subsidised... In our view the charges are most reasonable. "Other operators may be cheaper as they have low overheads and low expenses." Besides ambulance services, SMCT provides home nursing services and is an accredited training centre, which provides first aid and medical training for medical personnel and the public, according to its website. They have a total of five ambulances, according to the Singapore Civil Defence Force's (SCDF) website. The 1-777 scheme was started in 1998 for those who require ambulances for non-emergency cases. There are 20 private ambulance operators registered in the scheme. There is a list of the operators and charges on the SCDF website. Mr Jason Chng felt that his family has been penalised for being considerate. "We saw our case as non-urgent and called 1-777. The price is ridiculous for a transport of a non-emergency patient to the hospital." The Chngs' $800 bill Emergency call $180 Oxygen $170 IV drip $150 Bandages $80 Painkillers $200 Miscellaneous $20

    Family Trees

Another topic got me to write this. Both my parents already dead and the missuses father as well so only the wife's mother still around. Although she's lost a lot of near term memory, slight dementia, her long term memory is amazing. So for a year or so we've been asking her to tell us about her forfathers and relatives. Based on this info we've drawn up my wife's family tree which is impossible to do without this memory. Most of this family tree has been confirmed with other relatives who couldn't remember to begin with but on prompting by my mil and chatting together they all remember. We've gone back to 1885 with a forfather who was born in Singapore although some of the older members were immigrants from China. We've discussed it all with many relations who have found it very interesting and many even the younger ones have asked for copies of the tree. Without the memory of my mil none of this would have been possible and who knows how much longer she'll be around. Maybe not many of you will be interested with your ancestors history, where they lived, when they moved here and where from, how they survived in the wars, WW1 and WW2 but it can be fascinating. If you are interested you should talk to your oldest family members asap because once that memory has gone it has gone you won't be able to get it back.

  23. Christian charity defends workshop which Hwa Chong student called 'sexist' A Christian charity that conducts sexuality and relationship education workshops in schools has defended its programmes, after a student said it promoted gender stereotypes. Student Agatha Tan, a first year junior college student at Hwa Chong Institution, had on Friday attended a workshop in school, run by Focus On The Family Singapore, a pro-family Christian charity. She has written to HCI principal Hon Chiew Weng saying that the workshop "seemed to emphasise and enforce traditional gender roles in a relationship". She referred to a booklet given to students, which said girls need to feel loved, can be emotional and have a "deep need for her boyfriend to find her beautiful". The booklet also said boys are "visual", and that a "guy can't not want to look", and they have a desire to "visually linger on and fantasise about the female body". 24. Any advice how to manage the dataroaming costs for the following scenario? 12 day Europe escorted tour involving Holland, Belgium, Paris. Family of 3 Iphones, Was thinking of using 1 Singtel card with Dataroam activated inside 1 mobile wifi router. 3 Iphones will connect to the mobile wifi. Therefore cost limited to $15 a day, but if morning in 1 country, and afternoon in another, then doubled. However, I have to make sure the SINGTEL NETWORK LOCK is activated at all times? Any cheaper or more efficient option?
