  1. There recently was news regarding a collaboration between horsepower brokers Hamann Motorsport and suspension tuner extraordinaire H&R. Between them they have basically created the ultimate Fiat 500; the 275bhp, 380Nm H&R Hamann Fiat 500 Abarth Essesse. This is basically the ultimate bubble sports car as it should have the handling to match the power supplied to it. We start with Harmann's contribution to the package first. In order to achieve the desired 275bhp, Harmann has basically thrown in everything it has at the Fiat 1.4liter Multijet turbocharged engine. The engine gets forged pistons, uprated & polished conrods, cylinder head porting & polishing, different camshafts (most probably high lift with a different duration), Hamann fuel rail with fuel pressure regulator and larger injectors, a larger geometry variable vane turbocharger, Hamann specific intercooler & air baffles and colder high heat resistant spark plugs as well as the usual ECU tweaking and tuning. All of the fuel and air gets exhausted via a 200cell sports cat and then through a quad tail pipe sports exhaust system. This then passes through a limited slip differential equipped 6 speed manual gearbox that gets an uprated clutch & pressure plate and a 20% lighter than stock flywheel. With 350Nm going through the Fiat's front wheels, all of the goodies mentioned are very necessary. Hamann also adds larger 4pot brake calipers up front with 305mm diameter discs and larger than stock 264mm discs at the rear. This is added insurance for those trying to quell such a ballistic little car from very high speeds. Hamann then throws in their body kit complete with front splitter and rear diffuser, LED daytime driving lights, wide wheel arches and side skirts. Also assisting in the looks and handling are 18inch alloy wheels running 225/35//18 tires. H&R then comes up with the handling package for the car after Hamann is done upping the horsepower and the stopping power. H&R have stated that they had developed a new suspension system that consists of coil-overs front and rear (with high-low/soft-hard settings). They have also increased the width of the little Fiat's track front and rear with the use of wheel spacers specially designed for the Fiat. The suspension takes into account of this extra width and it isn't like some aftermarket tuner slapping some spacers without any proper research. Aside from improving grip, H&R claims that the handling is greatly improved as the firmer suspension and wider track reduces pitching and roll movements to a minimum. This allows the driver to actually focus on driving fast and hard instead of worrying about trying to control the extra body movements. The news on this special collaboration Fiat 500 Abarth was released in line with its official preview at the Essen Motor Show in Germany which started on the 27th of November. No information on pricing has been announced as yet. Not a bad looking little monster. I'd keep the power mods, alloys and suspension but I would lose the slightly over the top body kit and I'd keep the car painted in the original Abarth colors as this car looks like it has been painted by someone who works at the Puma shoe factory. It seems to have a cat leaping from one side of the bonnet to the other, much like the Puma Speedcat shoe.
  2. Jumping Jellybeans! A car shorter than the Smart ForTwo! Fiat has recently previewed a new ultra mini concept car called the Mio at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in Brazil. This tiny, diminutive, miniest of all minis, bacterial, amoeba-like, little, petite, plankton-sized car is only 2.5meters in length, the same length as the original Smart ForTwo which has now grown into the longer 2.69m 2nd Generation. I suppose if Fiat gets enough positive response from people, this little Mio will enter production and everyone can have the opportunity to drive another tiny-mobile, instead of only having to go out and buy a Smart. I do not wish to suggest electric cars like the pathetic G-Whizz (which is actually a half-baked electric car unlike those made by larger manufacturers) or some Made in China Smart replica as valid competitors to the Smart, which is why I left any of them out. Anyway, the Fiat Mio concept has a lot of people friendly gizmos such as mobile phone integration, touch screen controls, GPS, large glass roof and an entertainment system. It also has drag reducing wheel covers and it basically a single blob type shape with some hints of the original Fiat 500. You could also magine a Mitsubishi I that is even more shorter, smaller and with wheel covers. According to Fiat Brazil (who seem to be handling this project -which is why most of the world seems to have been unaware of the project), via their website www.fiatmio.cc, the Mio was originally called the Fiat Concept Car III (FCCIII) and then morphed into the Mio. The design and specs were created in colaboration with 17,000 people worldwide who had registered interest and had participated in sending themes for the concept car in a future urban environment. The main themes were mobility as well as sustainability. One quite ambitious theme is the fact that Fiat has stated that the Mio was

  4. Saw from one of the car forum that Fiat is on offer below. Is this attractive? 6. Fiat's Abarth division is expanding its range with the launch of the esseesse tuning kits for the new Abarth 500C and Abarth Punto Evo models at this month's Paris Auto Show. While Abarth is withholding most details on the "esseesse" packages that are designed improve the cars' performance, handling and styling, the Italian company did release info on the power upgrades. With this kit, the scorpion-branded 500 convertible's 1.4-liter turbocharged engine delivers 160HP and a peak torque of 230Nm, up from the standard car's 140HP and 206Nm. Acceleration from 0-100 km/h drops from 8.1 seconds to 7.5 seconds, while top speed increases from 205km/h to 209km/h. Output in the tuned Punto Evo "esseesse" is increased from 165HP and 250Nm to 180HP and 270Nm at 3000 rpm. As a result, the 0-100km/h sprint is reduced from 7.9 seconds to 7.5 seconds and top speed goes up to 216km/h . The 'essesse' package also includes a set of 17-inch alloys with 5 diamond shaped spokes against an anthracite background for the Abarth 500C, and 18-inch alloys in a special titanium-coloured design for the Abarth Punto Evo.
  7. One of the most bizarre stories to surface recently is that the Volkswagen Group (VW) is seriously interested in buying Alfa Romeo from Fiat S.p.A (Fiat). This rumor surfaced sometime last week where two unnamed VAG executives had stated that the group was interested in Alfa Romeo. In the bid to become the largest automotive manufacturer in the world, or in other words, trying to usurp Toyota from the throne, VW is still on a buying warpath. Hence the supposed need for another car brand like Alfa Romeo. Of course, Fiat did not take the rumors sitting down and has stated that the company has no intention of selling Alfa Romeo and is sticking to their turnaround plan for the brand that was announced by the Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne in April of this year. He had stated that Alfa will be a full line premium manufacturer and they plan to ramp up sales from 102,000 units in 2009 to around 500,000 units by 2014. Ambitious numbers nonetheless. Anyway, these industry rumors are really far fetched sometimes. VW CEO Martin Winterkorn had stated in April that VW was in the midst of taking over Porsche and is not planning to add another brand at the moment. VW also recently concluded the purchase of Italian Automotive Design firm Giugiaro and Winterkorn also said that VW
  8. Though we have never seen a Lancia on Singaporean roads before, nor heard the growl of the Stratos, I'm sure many car enthusiasts here know about the striking design which left an impression on many and some even dream of owning one. Well, a wealthy man who chose to remain anonymous, has decided to resurrect the lost soul. And now its back on the test track with a modern/retro design which some may love, or hate.. The one thing that made the Stratos so outstanding was the way it looked. It was compact, yet styled to look like something out of a ten year old's sketch book. It was mad, stylish and mesmerizingly pretty. This one however, looks a little odd. It doesn't have the charm of the original even though the basic shape is rather similar. The good thing though, is that both the original and the new Stratos share a Ferrari engine. The new one gets it power from a Ferrari F430 Scuderia and its chassis is from the Ferrari as well, but shortened to fit the small wheelbase of the Stratos. The sad thing is that because this project was started by that wealthy man, you won't be seeing it in mass production. Anyway, we will never get to see one, but for the rest of the world, there is still some hope as the car was seen at Fiat's test track near Milan which suggests Fiat's involvement in the production of the car and they may release limited edition models just like the 8C.
  9. The Fiat 500 has, in my opinion, gone full circle. Very recently Fiat officially revealed the new 500 and 500c (cabriolet) with the 'Twin Air' 900cc turbocharged 2 cylinder lawnmower engine. The little Fiat is set to hit showrooms in Europe in September of this year and was basically made to work within the European CO2 emissions tax system that is used over there for cars. The new 2 cylinder engine has the same amount of cylinders like the 'original' 500 Nuova launched in 1957. Those days the 500 had a 479cc 2 cylinder engine pumping out an incredible 14bhp. Nowadays, the 500 has to make do with a slightly better figure of 84bhp. This 500 TwinAir uses a 2 cylinder turbocharged engine with is 23% shorter and 10% lighter than a 4cylinder engine that has similar performance figures. It is also very economical as it would only consume 4.0-4.1ltrs/100km while emitting only 92g/km of carbon when matched with the Dualogic robotized gearbox and 95g/km of carbon for the manual version. This figure is about 30% less CO2 emissions that a 4cylinder engine of similar performance. It makes 84bhp and has a maximum of 145Nm of torque when used in 'Normal' mode and 100Nm in 'ECO' mode. This two modes have different engine maping as well as different steering feel. The class leading emissions is due to the small displacement (900cc), good low end torque (imagine 450cc per cylinder instead of, say 300cc for a 3 cylinder engine
  10. Fiat has chosen a unusual way to celebrate the production of the 500,000th 500 mini just 31 months after its launch. The Italian automaker is going to create a special edition version of the 500, whose surface is entirely covered by 1,500 photos displaying the faces of Fiat 500 customers, celebrities and fans. Starting from 3 May 2010, those interested to have their image printed on the Fiat 500 can book a place on the car by logging on to www.fiat500.com and use the special application showing a plan view of the Fiat 500. They can then book one of the free spaces online by sending a photograph. Fiat said that seventy per cent of the places are reserved for Fiat 500 owners. The special "Fiat 500 Thousandth" is expected to be ready three weeks after the booking stage is concluded and will be featured by the Italian carmaker in forthcoming events and international motor shows.
  11. Luca di Montezemolo has stepped down as chairman of the Italian carmaker Fiat. He will, however, remain president of Ferrari, with 34-year-old John Elkann - a descendant of the founding Agnelli family - replacing him at Fiat because Montezemolo has "finished the task" he began in 2004. Montezemolo, 62, denied the move is a precursor to moving into Italian politics or even founding his own party, insisting he is staying on the Fiat board and will not stop heading Ferrari. On the same day, Montezemolo announced that he still wants "major teams" such as Ferrari "and McLaren" to be allowed to enter third cars in grands prix. "We want a third car and I would do everything to have Valentino (Rossi)," he told reporters. "When he wins this year's MotoGP, enough is enough, he must also win in formula one," the Ferrari chairman and president added.
  12. Fiat has called a last-minute unscheduled press conference for 4 pm CET today, where it is understood that Fiat Group Chairman Luca Cordero di Montezemolo will announce that he is leaving the company. At this time, no official reason has been given for Montezemolo's departure, but it's being reported that he may be mulling a move into politics, possibly to form a new Italian centrist party. Going speculation also has it that Montezemolo will be replaced by current group vice-chairman John Elkann. Montezemolo's involvement with Fiat goes back to the early-1970s when he was a manager at the Ferrari Formula One team. After leaving the team he eventually returned to take over the CEO role at Ferrari and led the company through a period of major growth and expansion. Montezemolo will apparently remain on Fiat's board of directors. Fiat CEO Sergio Marchionne will also hold a presentation tomorrow to discuss Fiat's strategy going forward including its U.S. plans and a possible spin-off of the car business from the rest of the group.

  15. We've recently seen Fiat launch the 500 C recently, the convertible version of this ever popular premium city car as well as the face lifted Punto Evo. Fiat is having a renaissance of sorts with both cars as they are selling well in most of Fiat's major markets. The 500 is a real premium small city car that I enjoy sitting in, although I find the driving position a little too high up. It is small, cozy and the materials used in the interior are nice of look at, and nice to touch. It is nothing like the really ultra cheap plastics found in the Panda which the 500's chassis was derived from. The Punto Evo is the facelifted model of the Punto Grande whereby Fiat has removed the Maserati-esque front end. Of course, while Fiat is sold in Singapore, the current distributor seems to have a tough time creating sales as well as maintaining brand presence and awareness. This is usually the problem when a brand goes absent for a period of time. But I really do wish the Abarth models are sold here in this region. The new ones that are set to appear at the Geneva Motor Show look fabulous. The Fiat Abarth 500c is one of the two newest collaboration between Fiat and the newly re-established Abarth brand. In those days, the 1960s and 1970s to those who are too young to remember Abarth was the tuning house to go to if you wanted a fast Fiat. Everything from the small 500 to the 2000cc Fiats had Abarth magic breathed upon them. The smaller Fiats especially the Fiat Abarth 1000TCR were incredible little pocket rockets. It was a mad little car invented by mad Italians. I don't think anyone would have designed a car with a car that exhaust pipe exited through the engine bay which was left open to the elements at the rear of the car. Anyway, the new Abarth 500c is basically the Abarth version of the 500 convertible. It has an electric soft top available in either black or grey titanium, a Abarth tuned suspension & wheels and a 1.4 Turbo T-Jet engine making 138 bhp and 206Nm of torque. Abarth says it will go from 0 - 100km/h in 8.1 seconds and return an average 6.5 l/100 km (43.4 mpg imp) in the combined cycle. Now being a convertible this car isn't meant to be as manic as the normal Abarth 500 version. This is as convertibles are meant for people who want to enjoy the wind in their hair and sometimes this means the driving is a little more sedate than the hard top versions. Also most cars with a drop top have a chassis that isn't as rigid as one with a roof which means that handling is usually compromised. It has a nice colour scheme though. The Abarth Punto Evo is the second model that Fiat is showing off at Geneva. The 1.4 engine will make 162bhp and 250Nm of torque. There will be an EsseEsse (SS) version with more horses (178bhp) later. There will be a Sport and Normal mode for drivers to select dampers and Torque Transfer Control systems (traction control) on this Abarth. The car will have the usual sportier than the usual Punto Abarth specific body kits and rims as well as the white colour and red stripes that make Abarth look good. I like Fiats. Maybe as my dad had one (a Fiat 131 Mirafiori) and it was the first rear wheel drive car I ever drove (and lost control with in the wet) and the first Bburago model I ever owned, a Alitalia Fiat 131 Abarth Rally in 1/24 scale. By the time that toy went missing, it had one door pulled out of its hinge, two tires missing and the tiny steering gone. I still miss it to this day. Compared to the stock 131, it was massive, it was one of the first production cars heavily modified from a stock 2 door version with additional wheel extensions, a bonnet scoop, a roof spoiler and boot spoiler. The roof spoiler was there in 1979 waaayyyyy before the Subaru Impreza first utilized one on the Sti of 2006. Same concept decades ago. And that is why any new Fiat Abarth is a good thing. The bad thing is that they don't sell'em officially here in this part of the world. -The 1000TCR, a cute, mad car. I still have the Tamiya RC version of this car. And that's the only version of the car I'll ever own I think - This is the exact toy car I had when I was younger.

    A better Bravo

Fiat has announced details on its 2010 Bravo hatch, which has received a few minor cosmetic revisions for the model year. On the outside, the Bravo's upper and lower front grilles have been re-trimmed and are now offered either in black or chrome finish while the headlamps on all models are smoked. Furthermore, the mirrors and door handles are finished in the color as the body on all trim levels while Fiat added two new colors to the palette (a different shade of gray and a pear finish). A new set of available optional packages and refreshed designs, colors for the seat and door panel upholstery complete the list of changes. There has been no mention of any updates to the powertrains, so expect them to remain similar to the current offerings. The Bravo's sales has been lacklusture in the Singapore market thus far. Perhaps, some aggressive marketing efforts by TTS Eurocars would be required to raise the brand's awareness among motorists, just like what Audi, Volkswagen and Alfa Romeo have done in recent months. The revised Bravo came just in time to face off against newer models such as the Opel Astra, Ford Focus and Renault Megane. However, my opinion is that the minor cosmetic changes is insufficient to fend off the fresher competitions. A more powerful 1.4 T-jet engine for the automatic version would be on my wish list.
  19. In the world of modern technology, downsizing is the word. I could recall that twenty years ago, the size of a handphone could make it double up as a self defense tool. Fast forward to the 21st century, a handphone could fit into your right pocket with ease and could perform functions beyond your imagination. Back to the automobile industry, the word 'downsizing' does not refer to the physical size of the car, but points to the capacity of the engine. The founder of this trend is none other than Volkswagen, whose renowned 1.4L twincharged direct injection engine has won the 'International Engine of the Year' award for 2009. Volkswagen is not alone these days. Fiat takes a further step and in my opinion, embraces the concept of miniaturization with its upcoming 900cc two-cylinder engine. The new powerplant is Euro5 compliant and makes use of Fiat's Multiair and turbocharing technologies. It will make its debut in the Fiat 500 come 2010, and other A and B segment vehicles in the firm's stable. Two variants of the engine will be launched, generating 80 bhp and 105 bhp respectively. They will be followed by a 65 bhp naturally aspirated unit and a version propelled by compressed natural gas, CNG. The two potter is lighter and more compact in design as compared to a 4 cylinder engine with similar power. The C02 emission and fuel consumption figures would probably bring a smile to the faces of the folks at Greenpeace. More importantly, such an engine would give the Singapore driver a reason to smile when it comes to road tax payment.
