  7. Motor insurance has increased in recent years, I seriously hope they (Insurance Companies) will think about rewarding loyal customers. Singapore motor insurers make first profit since 2005 Published on Mar 14, 2012 By Christopher Tan Most motorists - especially those who have been accident-free - can expect a breather when they next renew their motor insurance, after years of unrelenting premium rises. Motor insurers posted an underwriting profit of $21.2 million in 2011, the first after five consecutive years of losses. At its annual briefing on Wednesday, the General Insurance Association (GIA) said the average premium collected from motor insurance - which still forms the single biggest segment for the industry - rose by 2.5 per cent in 2011 to an all-time high of $1,274. Average motor premium had been rising year on year since 2006, when it was $867.
  8. Hong Kong is not even in the TOP 15. Properties there must be cheaper than Singapore? 15 most expensive cities to visit SINGAPORE has become the 10th most expensive place in the world for holidaymakers, according to a report released by UBS. Other than Sydney and Tokyo which ranked seventh and eighth respectively, it is one of the most expensive destinations in Asia. While this may be bad news for some inbound travellers, this is something to cheer about for outgoing travellers due to the strong Singapore dollar. According to the Price and Earnings index, cities with strong currencies are able to support higher prices, and the converse is also true. For example, visiting the US has become significantly cheaper than it had been in the past with the weakened greenback. Major European cities such as Paris and Rome have also become more affordable, while destinations in northern Europe - like Norway and Sweden that have weathered the economic crisis relatively well - have been able to keep prices high. The survey was conducted on 73 major cities, analysing economic factors such as currency strength, and price levels of travel basics such as hotels, food and transportation in order to distinguish the truly expensive cities apart from the so-called budget-busters. So which destinations will most likely cause travellers to empty out their pockets and which places are bargain friendly? US is becoming a much more budget-friendly option, and most popular tourist spots are likely to keep their prices affordable, according to U.S. News. Still, there are several cities that travellers should avoid, no matter how budget-savvy they are. Here are the ones that will likely be unkind to your budget.
  9. Read that it will cover used cars from ah beng dealers too. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- SINGAPORE: The Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) has proposed changes to laws aimed at protecting consumers against unfair business practices. The proposed amendments to the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act and Hire Purchase Act, introduced in Parliament on Tuesday, will pave the way for the so-called "lemon law". "Lemon laws" refer to consumer protection laws that provide remedies for consumers against latent defects in goods, colloquially known as "lemons", which fail to meet standards of quality and performance, especially after repeated repair. For example, if a defect is found in a product within six months of delivery, it is assumed the defect existed at the time of delivery. It is then up to the retailer to prove otherwise. In such cases, consumers can ask the retailer to repair or replace the defective product. If the cost of repair outweighs the replacement, the retailer can choose to replace the product, and vice versa. If the retailer fails to repair or replace the product within a "reasonable time" or "without insignificant inconvenience" to the consumer, the consumer may ask for a reduction in price or return the product for a refund. If the retailer fails to do either, consumers may bring the matter to the Small Claims Tribunal. The amendments, targeted to take effect in September, are designed to make commercial transactions more transparent. The "lemon law" does not in general apply to goods with a short life span such as consumables and food. Meanwhile, the Consumers Association of Singapore (CASE) said consumers can look forward to seek redress more effectively when they're are sold defective goods. It said it believes this will also raise the standards of providing quality products. CASE said this in a statement on Tuesday after changes were proposed to the Consumer Protection (Fair Trading) Act and Hire Purchase Act in Parliament. It said it has been pushing for such a provision, as the number of cases it has received for defective products has been increasing over the years. These consumers felt shortchanged after they were sold defective products and were not able to seek redress effectively. In 2007, there were 1,410 cases. This rose to 1,928 in 2008. The number dropped in 2009 to 1,652. In 2010, it increased to 1,753, and to 1,793 in 2011. Last year, the biggest number was for furniture with 467 cases, followed by electrical and electronic goods with 338 cases and mobile phones with 301 cases. CASE said one area of concern is the defective products sold may not be rectified, even when they've been sent for repair several times. MTI believes the changes would not impact honest retailers, but would instead weed out the unscrupulous ones. Previously, there was no specific provision to deal with repairs and replacements. The proposed amendments followed a public consultation exercise conducted by MTI from December 2010 to January 2011. - CNA/cc/ir/wk

  11. Today I came back from work and was pleasantly surprised to see about half of the open-air car park lots were painted with the red & white line format & words painted warning folks that these season parking lots are reserved from 7pm-7am from Mon-Sat & whole day on Sundays/PH. Finally. With a CC hosting plenty of events like dinners & a religious building often with many devotees next to this very popular carpark & a normally packed kopi shop just across the road, residents like me often found ourselves not being able to find lots when back home. Some frustrated neigbours bo bian parked at unmarked areas & kena summons as a result. Despite our many appeals to HDB, nothing was done till now. Funny things only happened after a new MP was elected. Concidental? Well, you decide

  13. This guy used to be GCT's private secretary but ran with SDP during the last elections. Do we have an independant at last or is he a mole? You decide SINGAPORE: Opposition party member Tan Jee Say said he is stepping forward to contest the Presidential Election. Mr Tan collected forms for the Certificate of Eligibility from the Elections Department on Friday morning. In a statement, Mr Tan said he is doing so because many Singaporeans want a non-PAP President whose independence of the PAP is clear, obvious and cannot be in doubt. Mr Tan said only such a person can have the moral authority to fulfil the mission of Elected President which is to provide checks and balances on the PAP Government. He said he is aware of the constitutional limitations of the office of President but added that the office of President is what the President makes it out to be. "He can be as quiet and inactive as he chooses to be. Or he can be active. I want to be an active President, engaging the nation on issues of conscience and promoting worthy causes."

  15. McLaren has released full details on the MP4-12C and the model's specs are definitely in line with the uncompromising performance that the supercar-maker has promised. Under the mid-rear bonnet is the M838T power plant in the McLaren MP4-12C - a 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces a total of 600 PS (441 kW / 592 bhp) and 600 Nm (443 lb-ft) of torque. The MP4-12C does the 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) sprint in 3.3 seconds (3.1 with special Corsa tires) and has a top speed of 330 km/h (205 mph). 0 to 200 km/h (124 mph) comes in at 9.1 seconds, 8.9 with the Corsa racing tires. The MP4-12C's MonoCell carbon-fiber chassis, which weights only 75 kg (165 lbs), helps makes for a sprightly vehicle that could weigh-in as low as 1301 kg (2868 lbs) with the lightweight options that McLaren will make available once the model goes on sale. Transmission on the MP4-12C is a seven-speed SSG gearbox which offers three drive modes: Normal, Sport and Track. The MP4-12C also comes with adjustable roll control, which replaces mechanical anti-roll bars, and the new supercar features a suspension control module with 3 modes too, Normal, Sport and Track, just as with the transmission but which acts independently of the gearbox setting. "I am immensely proud of the 12C development team. I don't believe any car company in the world has put as much effort, innovation, passion and sheer determination into launching a car as McLaren has with the 12C...Both in simulation, and in the real world on road and track, we have gone to extremes to ensure the 12C stands up to the performance and quality we know our prospective customers demand," said Antony Sheriff, McLaren Automotive's Managing Director, in a statement. McLaren is currently still testing the MP4-12C with four prototypes having gone on the road for further tests in Portugal and Spain just last month. The MP4-12C will be available through a network of 35 retailer locations in 19 countries at a price of around $229,000 in the US and about
  16. SEVEN-time world champion Michael Schumacher cut a happier figure after his sixth place at the Spanish Grand Prix than after an abject performance a fortnight ago in Turkey. The 42-year-old had another impressive start moving from tenth up to sixth place and said he was pleased to have held his position but admitted that he had struggled with his car's setup. "We managed to make the most out of our possibilities today which is good news, especially for our guys who I am happy for," he said. "I had a good start. Going right through the middle was tight but fortunately it worked out. Then the race was about holding position from there. "We can be happy with the result but other than that, it was just tricky with oversteer, tyre degradation and poor balance to deal with. "Still we achieved what we could have, and I look forward to going to Monaco (next weekend)," added Schumacher, who earlier in the day had refuted claims he would be retiring. His compatriot and team-mate Nico Rosberg believes a faulty rear wing hampered his chances of a higher-placed finish. Rosberg, son of Finland's former world champion Keke, started and finished seventh. Rosberg lost communication with his team and suffered a problem with his car's drag reduction system that meant he was unable to overtake down the long straight. The 25-year-old, who qualified third in Turkey and had expected to be more competitive during the race, admitted he had been left feeling frustrated. "Unfortunately it was a difficult race for me," Rosberg said. "The radio didn't work so that made it difficult. "Then my rear wing also broke so I didn't have the overtaking system and it made it very difficult to overtake. "Otherwise for sure I could've moved up and I'm sure I would've finished a lot closer to the top because I think I had pretty good pace today." Although Rosberg felt he was held up by Schumacher, he admitted his team was still a long way off the pace of the frontrunners. "I was pretty happy with my car, it felt good." "I think I had good speed, but there's still a lot of work to do because unfortunately I don't think we really managed to close the gap yet."

  23. Drove to Malacca last week and was along travelling along Ayer Keroh towards Pusat Bandaraya in moderate rain. About 20 m from the junction near Jusco when green traffic light start flashing (means gonna change to red soon). If I floor the accelerator, sure can cheong thru'. Apply brake and come to a smooth stop. About 2s later, heard and feel the dreaded crunching thud sound from the back. Immediately knew that I was hit. I got down the car and it was a local driver and his first word was "Brake rosak". I gestured him to drive to the side and keeping an eye not to let him drove away. His proton no scratch, nothing while mine vios paint was cracked (came off) below the bonnet. He mentioned to drive to his workshop but I insist lima ratus ringget. He said not much money so we haggled till tiga ratus ringget. Locked up my car and he drove me (with his 3 yr old daughter) to the ATM to pass me the cash. At the hotel, I did a more thorough check and decided to buy some stickers/decal and just paste over the affected parts. Moral of story, better cheong thru' in the rain when nearing flashing green light under safe condition.
