  1. KNN....like 0.10c to him SINGAPORE: Prominent plastic surgeon Woffles Wu Tze Liang has been ordered to pay the maximum fine of S$1,000 for getting an elderly employee to take the rap for him for a speeding offence. The 52-year-old had abetted Mr Kuan Kit Wah, then 76, to provide false information to the police in November 2006. The car, belonging to Wu, was travelling at 91-kilometer (km) per hour on Adam Road when the speed limit is 70km per hour. The court heard that Wu also made Mr Kuan take the rap for him for another speeding offence in September 2005. This charge was taken into consideration during the sentencing on June 12. Wu could also have been jailed up to six months and fined. - CNA/ck
  2. Posted this thread not because of some guy getting fined. Just curious when is it a "seizable offence" and when is it considered a "non-seizable" offence according to the boys in blue or really, the AGC in a typical assault case. I believed there were previously reported cases when the victims were whacked senseless and even hospitalized but some how the aggressors got away with a light fine or not even charged at all. Pub brawls are really very common but we seldom see or hear these drunk blokes getting charged/fined or just that the papers don't report these ka chiam puteh news? 3. Man fined $4000 for assasult in pub SINGAPORE: A 27-year-old Singaporean man has been fined $4,000 for assaulting another man who had made derogatory remarks about him in a pub. Alexander Lincoln Chew Yew Wah punched Mills Richard Jonathan several times in the face. The incident happened in November 2010 in a pub at Nanson Road off Mohamed Sultan Road. The court heard that 29-year-old Mills had challenged Chew to hit him. The two men scuffled outside the pub's washroom. A security officer later reported the incident to the police. Mills was warded in hospital for two days. As a result of the assault, he sustained a scar on his eyebrow. In his mitigation, Chew's lawyer argued that his client had no intention to cause trouble, but the Briton's "derogatory comments coupled with his persistent taunts" angered him. The lawyer, who called for a fine of $1,000, added that the victim was not entirely blameless in the incident. In sentencing, District Judge Ronald Gwee noted that the overtones in Mills' comments were quite clear and there was "a certain degree of provocation". However, he also agreed with the prosecution that Chew had "over-reacted". The judge added that a fine was appropriate in this case, but it should be sufficient to act as a deterrent. For voluntarily causing hurt, Chew could have been jailed up to two years and fined $5,000. - CNA/de Moral of the story : Singaporeans at losing end....
  4. Illegal parking on double-yellow line still can argue wan meh? And mata also kena called in? From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...eign_woman.html Posted on 28 May 2012 Foreign woman goes berserk after she's fined for illegal parking STOMPer Supernovi says this foreign woman kicked up a big fuss after being issued a fine for parking illegally along a double yellow line at Bukit Timah. The police eventually had to be called in to resolve the matter. Says the STOMPer: "My friends and I were at Bukit Timah Plaza and we came upon a Chinese National woman getting booked for a parking offence along a double yellow line. "Apparently, she insisted that the enforcement officer allow her a grace period but when she came back, she received a ticket. "Question: Which enforcement officer will allow anyone any grace period for parking along a double yellow line? "Clearly she was in the wrong and she created such a big fuss that her own kid was crying. Afterwards, when the traffic enforcement officers were about to leave the scene on their bike, the kid allegedly blocked their way and caused them to nearly fall. "The officers had no choice but to disembark and call the police. "The police came later and she kept on complaining that she was still right and we were like 50 metres away and we still could hear the commotion. "After a good 20 minutes, they all left the scene. "The woman should have known better, why create such a big fuss when you are in the wrong in the first place? Please adhere to the laws of Singapore, even though it may be just a parking summon. "Irony of the story, one of the enforcement officers is also a Chinese National."

  11. From STOMP: http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...dicine_too.html Posted on 16 Feb 2012 Shouldn't LTA officer be fined too for stopping vehicle on double yellow zig-zag lines? STOMPer Amused thinks that a LTA traffic warden should be prosecuted too as he had committed a traffic offence while performing his duty. STOMPer Amused wrote: "Traffic Policemen are fair. They listen to you and try to understand your problems. "On the other hand, LTA traffic wardens behave as if they own the roads. They like to play god. "Those who are misfortunate enough to encounter them would know. "This photo was taken at 3.30pm on Feb 30 opposite Suntec City Tower Four. "I saw this 'hot pursuit' by a LTA traffic warden with siren and flashing lights on, just to intercept a car. LTA should have a record of this event. "Both vehicles came to a halt at the double yellow zig-zag lines. "A page from the Highway Code states, 'Double yellow zig-zag lines indicate No Stopping at all times on that side of the road where the lines are drawn.' "Therefore, the LTA traffic warden has broken a traffic rule. "So, dear Traffic Police, please do what you have to do! :)"

From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1180130/1/.html S'pore PR fined for operating unlicensed employment agency By Monica Kotwani | Posted: 31 January 2012 1901 hrs SINGAPORE: A 30-year-old Singapore Permanent Resident has been fined S$50,000 for operating as an unlicensed employment agency. De Luna Noriza Dancel is the first agent to be convicted as the principal offender since the revised Employment Agencies Act came into effect in April 2011. She was also fined S$2,500 under the Employment of Foreign Manpower Act (EFMA) for employing her Filipino husband, Caladiao William Tolentino, who was without a valid work pass. The Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said De Luna was issued a licence in July 2010 to operate the RSD Consultancy & Services employment agency. While still engaged as director of RSD, she set up another agency with William, without obtaining a licence for it. She engaged William, who was then in Singapore on a social visit pass, to run the unlicensed agency. He assisted her by posting job advertisements, sourcing for prospective employers and employees, and collecting agency fees. De Luna's licence for her first agency expired in July last year, but was not renewed as she was being investigated by MOM for operating the unlicensed agency. MOM said despite being under investigation, she continued with her unlicensed agency activities, and even set up a third agency, again without a valid licence. De Luna and William were arrested in December last year. - CNA/al

  15. STOMPer Ryan was unhappy that he received a parking fine on his friend's wedding day. Two other cars received summons as well -- all for parking on double yellow lines. The STOMPer recounts the incident: "I got a big gift from HDB this morning. Three parking fine tickets for the bridal and brother's car. "We were up at the house and saw from the balcony that we had received tickets, while he was half-way through the tea ceremony. "This happened at Woodlands Drive 71, at 10.15am this morning. "All three of the cars involved in the wedding got a $100 fine for parking on double yellow lines. "I think the parking wardens were quite insensitive to do something like this on a happy occasion. "This really spoilt my day. I later told the groom about it and he was quite sad about it too."
  16. SMRT, SBS Transit fined for service quality breaches By Joanne Chan | Posted: 21 October 2011 2028 hrs SINGAPORE: Bus operators SMRT and SBS Transit have been fined by the Public Transport Council (PTC) for service quality breaches. For the six-month period from 1 December 2010 to 31 May 2011, both operators had instances of failing to depart from bus interchanges on time, and also exceeding the maximum passenger load. SBS Transit was fined S$700, and SMRT S$300. Chairman of the Public Transport Council, Gerard Ee, said: "Although the operators have generally been able to meet the Quality of Service standards set for basic bus services, the latest performance results indicate that they face some challenges in continuing to deliver service quality as public transport ridership increases." To address this problem, Mr Ee noted that the operators are investing in more new buses and recruiting more drivers. The Land Transport Authority is also currently reviewing the bus service levels to address issues of crowdedness, frequency and reliability. -CNA/ac Fined $700 / $300 for service breaches? Can we bill them back for time lost, etc when their buses break down? Freaking joke, might as well dont fine and tell them they are doing a good job.
  17. Read today papers and it left a bitter after taste in my mouth (not from my Kopi O Kosong). Its so easy to catch 16 agencies but the pump prices (now with masking of discounts, tie up with Credit cards, reward point perks) - with a simple Math calculation, are all the same. Sorry for the Saturday <RANTING>
  18. Mistakes do happen but unforgivable if one never acts on it despite being notified. Can emphatise with the SPT's fustration... From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_706271.html Motorist fined wrongly, then let off out of 'goodwill' I AM a resident of Marine Drive and pay for my HDB season parking via Giro monthly. On Monday morning, I discovered a parking fine on my windshield, offering a compounded settlement fee of $50 for not having a valid season parking permit. The offence was recorded at 4.26am by the reporting officer. The initial letters of the vehicle licence plate in the fine was noted as SFC, while mine starts with SFV. That mistake, together with the fact that I have been settling my season parking through Giro for the past four years, naturally baffled me. I wrote in to the Housing Board and Wilson Parking (the latter issued the fine) on the same day and received an e-mail reply from HDB on Thursday. The Geylang branch officer noted that I had committed an offence by parking without a valid season parking permit. The HDB reply also stated that it would waive the fine this time but will not do so again. The reply was baffling especially as I did not commit the offence and HDB and Wilson Parking obviously got the vehicle number wrong. Yet it was made to seem as if they were waiving the fine out of goodwill. Sandra Ng (Ms)

  22. IN THE first case of its kind, a former insurance claim advisor was fined $8,000 for inflating the cost of repairs done to a car involved in an accident in April 2009. Liew Hock Wei, 29, had pleaded guilty last week to trying to cheat NTUC Income Insurance Cooperative of $9,449. Then, a district court heard that he had submitted a claim for $21,363 for costs of repairs to the car. It had been left in the car park of Bukit Batok Street 32 when another car hit it. The insurance firm appointed independent surveyor JP Knights to assess the repairs and discovered that the radiator and the rear tailgate had not been replaced as claimed by Liew. During further investigations, the Malaysian admitted that 17 other parts had been repaired and not replaced. These included the front bonnet, aircon condenser and rear bumper. The total cost of all of these items he had initially claimed had been replaced added up to $9,440. Liew, who was then working for motor workshop MBM Wheelpower told police that it was 'market practice' to inflate insurance claims. Defence counsel Anand Nalachandran had confirmed that the money would have gone to the workshop and not to his client. Liew had committed the offence out of 'over-zealousness', the lawyer added. In passing sentence, district judge Kessller Soh said while offences involving cheating insurance companies usually carried a jail sentence, in Liew's case a stiff fine would be an appropriate deterrence. http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_676799.html ---------------------------------- so this is why insurance premiums keep going up?

  24. i dunno what to say... banned from driving for 5yrs but posting out liao.. ban for wat  http://www.straitstimes.com/BreakingNews/S...ory_670713.html A JAPANESE financial controller was fined $6,000 and banned from driving for five years for causing the death of a motorcyclist in a road traffic accident. Goto Shobun, 37, pleaded guilty to negligently causing the death of Mr Ting Ee Boey, 50, while making a right turn from Lornie Road into Thomson Road on Aug 23, 2009. The court heard that he had failed to keep a proper lookout at the signalised cross-junction and encroached into the path of the motorcyclist who was proceeding straight from the opposite direction. Mr Ting died about 14 hours later of head injuries. Shobun's lawyer told the court in mitigation that the accident occurred as a result of a momentary lapse of concentration. He said his client, who has a law degree in Japan, has a spotless driving record, and is due to be posted out by end-month. Shobun could have been jailed for up to two years or fined or jailed and fined for causing death by doing a negligent act.
