  2. Man saves wife from fire - He covers her with wet towel? HE was washing his hands at the kitchen sink when he heard his wife screaming. CHARRED: The fire burned the walls and the gas stove. PICTURE: SHIN MIN DAILY NEWS When retiree Pek Kim Hock, 74, turned around, he saw his wife of more than 50 years, Madam Koh Yeock Kee, 71, on fire. Flames had suddenly lashed out at Madam Koh from the gas cylinder in the kitchen. She was burnt on various parts of her body, including hair, neck and arms. Her clothes were also on fire. Though horrified, Mr Pek's reaction was swift and decisive. He said in Mandarin: 'I was standing near her when I saw she was on fire. So I grabbed a large towel lying on the floor, ran it under running water, and wrapped it around her head and upper body.' -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've attended a Fire Hazard & Safety talk by my company recently. The speaker is an retired-Fireman of an 'Encik' rank. I can somewhat remember what was advised to react in situation as mentioned above. - DO NOT USE WET TOWEL .. why? 1) The moisture in the wet towel, when come in contact with heat, results in 'steaming' the skin and flesh. 2) Try not to WRAP the burnt victim, as the burnt skin of the vicitim will 'stick' to the fabric of whatever is used to cover them INSTEAD, when a person is on fire, 1) Use an ABC Dry powder extinguisher (which is chemically safe for use on human, apologies forgotten the word for it..) on the victim on fire. <- Hence a fire extinguisher is a good to have 2) Ask the victim on fire to cover his/ her face.. ROLL on the floor to put out the fire himself/ herself. Ok, this is my 2-bytes worth. It is just I'm too comfortable with the way the article is portraying the corrective actions for a victim on fire Hope any bro/ sis who has more knowledge on this can correct me and/or add on to the above.
  3. Fire Evacuation Drill : Beware, It Might Be Your Last Big companies and offices in high rise building often conduct 'Fire Evacuation Drill' once a while to get it staff to familarise with the fire safety ....... But with the recent recession, this drills might be your last drill ....... Subject: Last Evacuation Drill In a large multinational company.............. A fire alarm rang at 4 pm in a large office when almost all employees were in office (approx 5000). As usual the entire office was evacuated within 3 mins & all employees gathered outside the office in the designated area, waiting for further announcement. The Security Officer in charge made the following announcement: "Dear employees - with sincere regret I have been asked to announce that for many of you it will be your last evacuation drill. Due to the recession, the company is laying off almost 50% of its employees. So when this announcement finishes, I ask all of you to move back into the building and if your swipe card does not work then it means you have been laid off in which case you will not be allowed inside and all your belongings will be couriered to you by tomorrow. The Company has used this innovative approach as we didn't want to fill up the email box with lay-off mails and good bye mails in thousands & also to avoid any fight inside the office and the consequent security issue for all staff. Hope you have had a rewarding career with us and all the best ahead. Please move back in & try your luck. Thank you". So, if the fire drill is activated, please double checks before leaving the building .......

  5. SINGAPORE : Member of Parliament (MP) for Yio Chu Kang, Seng Han Thong, is in hospital with 10 per cent burns after a man poured flammable liquid on him and set him on fire on Sunday. Mr Seng was at a bursary and hong bao presentation ceremony at Yio Chu Kang Community Club when the attack happened. The chairman of a nearby Chinese temple, Aw Swee Seng, also suffered burns. Both men are now at the Singapore General Hospital. Yio Chu Kang Community Club was filled with police and Civil Defence officers who were going about their investigations, but reporters were barred from entering the premises. It is believed that a 70
  6. STOMPer Michael caught sight of this Citroen in flames along the CTE this morning. He says: "I drove past this Citroen Berlingo on fire along CTE this morning around 9.30. "Did not see anyone injured. "Apparently, the driver had time to salvage his belongings (see the island). "I wonder how this could happen, when Citroens are supposed to build safe cars and vans." http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singapor...nt.jsp?id=48549
  7. Hubby's genitals set ablaze SYDNEY - AN AUSTRALIAN woman who allegedly set fire to her husband's genitals because she believed he was having an affair appeared in court on a murder charge on Monday. After the fire spread through the family home, Rajini Narayan, 44, told neighbours she had only wanted to burn her husband's penis 'so it belongs to me and no one else,' prosecutors said. 'It's just his penis I wanted to burn, I didn't mean this to happen,' she was quoted as saying, the Adelaide Advertiser reported. Prosecutors said Narayan's engineer husband Satish was asleep in their double-storey Adelaide home when his wife doused his genitals with methylated spirit and set them on fire on December 8 last year. The blaze spread when he jumped out of bed and knocked over the bottle of spirits, causing around US$700,000 (S$1 million) damage to the house and a neighbouring property, the court heard. Narayan, 47, died in hospital last week. His widow was remanded in custody until Friday, pending the results of a psychological assessment. -- AFP http://www.straitstimes.com/Breaking%2BNew...ory_322203.html

  10. http://www.firetrainingresources.net/items...pressedpics.pdf http://www.cleanmpg.com/forums/showthread.php?p=57346 The group of cars were set of fire by an arsonist. Only one CNG car was involved in this incident. This is a view of all the cars involved Another view from the rear A view of the left side of the CNG civic. Notice the lack of roof, truck lid, and how the doors are extended completely at their extreme points. This was a result of the explosion, not fire suppression efforts. Another view of the left side. In this picture you can see how the roof rails are bowed considerably from the force exerted on the car from the explosion. Also you can see clearly how far the front door was forced open. This is a picture of the rear of the car. The CNG tank was mounted towards the front of the trunk. For an idea of where that would be look at the spare tire, just a bit more forward than that. Another picture from the rear. Look at the metal bracket thats roughly sitting on top of the spare tire. Notice the U-bend clamps... those are the clamps that held down the CNG tank in the car. A picture from the right rear A picture of the right front. Notice the buckling of the hood from the pressure wave of the tank exploding. Its also pretty easy to see how much the roof pillars were blew out. A view from the front of the car. I think the fact that windshield washer fluid resivor was undamaged so exactly how much blast damage and flash fire there was to the car. The fluid in the container kept it from melting/burning. A closer view from the front. A picture of the trunk lid. This was blown approximately 75 feet from the car. That little blue CNG sticker on the back is the only warning that fire fighters have to tell that the car is powered by NCG. A picture of the roof of the civic. This was blow ~100 feet from the car. The screwdriver is there just for scale. A part of the rear of the car/bumper assembly. The actual rear bumper. Its sitting to the left and closer to the camera than the backhoe. Where the CNG tank landed. ~110-120 feet away. Another angle of where the tank landed. A view of the CNG tank fitting. It separated a small amount from the tank when the explosion occured. This is not where the failure of the vessel happend.... A picture of the CNG tank. Notice the delamination of the carbon fiber wrapping around the tank. These tanks are designed almost identical to the SCBA bottles we firefighters wear on our back. Another view of the extreme delamination due to fire involvement and explosion. A third view of the tank. A final fourth view of the tank. The hammer is there for scale. I think its quite obvious the extreme danger these vehicle types are when involved in fire. It is extremely dangerous to fire fighters as they are the ones that have to put out the fire when we are called to it, and often times it is impossible or very difficult to tell wether or not the car has such a tank in it.

  12. i witnessed a fire accident at 330am today 060608 those living at blk 466 sembawang drive or along the sungei river might have seen a bright orange glare and heard fire engines, or even smelled the smoky air... was about 3am and the weather was pretty cooling and there were mild lighenings and soft thunder sounds, so i tot it was prob gonna rain but suddenly a very bright orange glare shone right into my room curious, i looked out the window to check wad it was... only to see a fierce fire emerging from a nearby factory juz across the road away from my house 4 fire engines and several police cars came took them an hour plus to control the fire but juz when the fire seemed to be under controlled, a sudden explosion will follow and a fierce ball of flames will appear. this happened for an hour... the sky was very red and bright, with very visible dark smokes arising to the sky from where i stood and view ( i live at 18th floor ), it looked like a volcano erupting... fire died down at about 5am. nt sure if anyone in my neighbourhood saw this but i was still awake at 3 and i happen to see the flames go wild... hope no casualties ** sorry for the blur image i forgot to switch on to anti shake function =)

  14. http://www.reuters.com/article/BROKER/idUSN0142277220080602 UPDATE 7-Fire destroys buildings at Universal Studios in LA Sun Jun 1, 2008 8:48pm EDT By Sue Zeidler LOS ANGELES, June 1 (Reuters) - A fire roared through part of Universal Studios film and TV studio on Sunday, damaging well-known movie sets and a popular "King Kong" attraction before being brought largely under control after 12 hours, fire officials said. Universal, one of the world's six major film studios, had to close its popular theme park for the day because of the fire but it did not interfere with Sunday's taping of the popular MTV Movie Awards at the adjacent Gibson Amphitheater. About 500 firefighters from several Los Angeles-area fire departments battled the blaze, which caused no fatalities but injured nine firefighters and a deputy sheriff, said Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Ron Haralson. By late afternoon he said the backlot fire was contained to a single structure -- the "King Kong" exhibit -- as firefighters used bulldozers to move burning videotapes and other flaming debris. The blaze destroyed about five structures within a faux New York set used in various movies and television shows, including one sound stage. Also damaged was the "King Kong" attraction, an alley from "The Sting" and a set from "Back to the Future." Sunday's fire burned some of the same back-lot areas destroyed by a blaze in 1990, which whipped through the New York Street and a set used for "Ben Hur." It took years to rebuild at an estimated cost of $50 million. Universal is operated by NBC Universal Inc., which is 80 percent owned by General Electric Co and 20 percent by French communications and utility company Vivendi. The fire caused traffic jams for miles in all directions to the studio, where a building housing a video vault had been badly damaged and the vault itself was "compromised." A Universal spokeswoman said about 40,000 to 50,000 videos had been damaged but the studios either had copies of those films or could easily copy them. The contents of a second vault holding master copies of older and classic movies were salvaged. "Nothing irreplaceable was lost," said Ron Meyer, Universal Studios' president and chief operating officer. The studio said the full damage had not yet been assessed. Los Angeles County Fire Inspector Darryl Jacobs said the blaze was first reported about 4:45 a.m. The cause was not immediately clear. Firefighters encountered explosions from propane tanks and called in helicopters at one point to drop water. Universal Studios is bounded by the city of Los Angeles and communities like Burbank. It is home to the Universal Pictures movie lot and Universal Studios Hollywood theme park. Several acres on the 230-acre (93-hectare) back-lot area, where films and TV shows are produced, were burned but the theme park was largely unaffected. Universal Studios Hollywood houses attractions such as "Revenge of the Mummy - The Ride" and "Shrek 4-D." Its "CityWalk" mall has 65 restaurants, nightclubs and shops. Universal Pictures, with a history dating to 1909, has been a major producer of hit films, and tapped a young Steven Spielberg to make 1975's "Jaws." The director still houses his production company, Amblin Entertainment, on the lot. Other hit Universal titles have included the "Back to the Future" and "Jurassic Park" movies. 17. 1. I wonder how many of us carry fire extinguisher in our cars? A thread on a Kia Cerato that burnt by itself has recently emerged. 2. Do you think it is a must have item in the car, especially by the driver's seat? If you don't carry one, what make you so sure that you will escape from a burning car or to save one? Please comment. Thank you. Regards,

    Hougang fire

just saw the channel 8 program which covers the recent hougang fire which killed 2 siblings. it seems tat 4 yrs ago (2003) the victims' father had appeared on tv to share about his concern about shop owners placing their goods at the footway obstructing residents and blocking the way in the event of emergency.. why is it tat 4 yrs later the issue still not rectify and cause 2 person to get killed in the fire? i wonder wat the town council and the MP had been doing the past 4 years. many "good" years ahead indeed.
  19. Do you how an in-car fire extinguisher work to auto eliminate fire or by a push of a button? Where can this be installed locally? LTA approved? Thank you. Regards,

  22. There were a number of cases reported when cars caught fire. Anyone have any idea what might the reason? I am thinking of doing DIY Grounding and I am concern could this be one of the causes or could it be other mods done?
  23. Date : 27th March 2007 ( Tuesday) Time : 0735 ~ 0745 I will like to did any of one see this incident. I was on my way to way travelling the PIE towards Tuas. There is a traffic light outside the fire station for emergency use to facilitate the ambulances or fire trucks to move out of the station...those who use this stretch of road in the morning will know how congested it can be. As I approached the fire station coming from Jurong side, the traffic light was switched on to "Amber" and to "Red"...Vehicles from both side of the road came to a halt...instead of hearing siren screaming or seeing fire truck or ambulances coming out of the station. A bright red car (looked like a Honda Integra) came out from the guard house , turned right and move off towards the direction of PIE towards Changi Airport's direction. Did any of the fellow driver here experience it..or at least came to a halt outside the fire station....cos there was easily dozen of vehicles on both side of the road stopping. There wasnt any flashing beacon on top of the car and neither was the hazard light on. I could only see the driver wearing more like civilian clothing instead of uniform. My vehicle was just one car away from the yellow junction box..so could see quite clearly.
