  8. Another one! RIP Seems like a major recall of the big names up there. Must be one helluva rocking concert.... Earth, Wind & Fire soul band founder Maurice White dies From the sectionEntertainment & Arts Image copyright: Getty Images Image caption: In a career that stems back to the 1960s, Maurice White was a singer-songwriter, producer and Earth, Wind & Fire bandleader The founder of soul group Earth, Wind & Fire, Maurice White, has died in the US, his brother has said. White, 74, died in his sleep in Los Angeles on Thursday morning. He suffered from Parkinson's Disease. His band had a series of hits including September, Boogie Wonderland, Shining Star and After the Love has Gone. The singer-songwriter was diagnosed with Parkinson's in 1992 but his condition was reported to have got worse in recent months. Earth, Wind & Fire were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2000, and Maurice was individually inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010. Earth, Wind & Fire have sold more than 90 million albums worldwide. "My brother, hero and best friend Maurice White passed away peacefully last night in his sleep," Verdine White, also a member of the band, told The Associated Press on Thursday. "While the world has lost another great musician and legend, our family asks that our privacy is respected as we start what will be a very difficult and life changing transition in our lives. Thank you for your prayers and well wishes." Earth, Wind & FireA nine-piece band centred around the two White brothers and singer Philip Bailey The band's most successful period began with the 1975 album That's The Way of The World They remained prominent in the charts for at least a decade afterwards White publicly revealed he was suffering from Parkinson's at the time of the band's Hall of Fame induction He stopped touring with the band in 1995 because of a combination of tiredness and health problems White said in an interview with the Associated Press news agency in 2000 that he wanted Earth, Wind & Fire's music to inspire people rather than just entertain them. "That was the whole objective, to try to inspire young people to believe in themselves and to follow through on their ideas," he said. "We've touched so many people with these songs." A former session drummer, White formed a band called Salty Peppers in the Chicago area in the late 1960s. He subsequently moved to Los Angeles, disposing of all of the band members except Verdine, The band was renamed Earth, Wind & Fire after the three elements in his astrological chart. Many of the group's earlier hits were characterised by Bailey's bright falsetto voice. The band is perhaps best known for its exuberant, horn-driven mix of jazz, funk, gospel and Big Band music played at concerts where they performed in glitzy costumes underneath multi-coloured lights. They played at many top venues including the Super Bowl and the White House. "We live in a negative society,'" White informed Newsweek at the peak of the band's success. "Most people can't see beauty and love. I see our music as medicine."
  9. Amongst the saddest stories encountered this year. An orphaned mother who left her infant an orphan... What they call, fated. Haiz... Chemist who died in Jurong fire a 'bubbly, lovely girl' who lost her mum at a young age Ms Lim Siaw Chian, 30, died in a fire that broke out at gas manufacturing firm Leeden national Oxygen on Oct 12, 2015. Aw Cheng Wei SINGAPORE - The woman who died in the Jurong fire on Monday (Oct 12) had grown up without a mother. Now, her infant daughter will grow up without her mother, too. Chemist Lim Siaw Chian, 30, died in a fire that broke out at Leeden National Oxygen, a gas manufacturing firm. Of the seven others who were injured, three remain hospitalised, the Manpower Ministry said in an update. The remaining four were discharged on Tuesday. The ministry also said investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing. It has also issued a stop-work order for the production and bottling of hydrocarbons, and the buying and selling of bottled gases stored in the area adjacent to the lab where the fire broke out. Ms Lim, a Malaysian who became a Singapore citizen only a month ago, had returned to work after her maternity leave one week before the fire. She was married for about two years, said her family members, who were at the mortuary next to the Singapore General Hospital on Tuesday morning. She leaves behind her husband and six-month-old daughter. Ms Lim had lost her own mother to kidney failure 22 years ago. Her mother was also 30 years old when she died, her family said. Related Story Fire at Jurong gas firm kills woman, injures 7 Related Story Response team helps control Jurong fire Her granduncle, Mr Gay Thiam Huat, who lives in Singapore, told reporters in Mandarin that he remembered her as a "bubbly, lovely girl" who often visited his home when she first came to Singapore with her mother at a young age. The last time he and the rest of the family saw her was about two years ago, at her wedding. Said Mr Gay, 64, a lorry driver: "She was not sure if she wanted the Singapore citizenship initially... She thought the cost of living here was quite high. He added that she could have changed her mind as Singapore holds a special meaning to her. She had studied and worked in Singapore since a young age. "She met her husband, who is also from Malaysia, in university here," Mr Gay said. Ms Lim's husband, who is now a Singapore citizen, was also at the mortuary on Tuesday morning, along with his parents. He was distraught and did not speak to the media. Ms Lim, who lived with her husband in Jurong West, had been working at Leeden National Oxygen for more than a year. Previously, she did food testing at another company. Her remains will be sent back to her hometown of Senai in Johor on Tuesday evening, said Mr Gay. Her funeral will be held on Wednesday.

Backlash against Jeremy Clarkson after he calls railway track suicides 'selfish' Top Gear presenter's comments about commuter disruption provoke condemnation from mental health charities Jasmine Coleman and agencies guardian.co.uk, Saturday 3 December 2011 10.25 GMT Jeremy Clarkson apologised after saying strikers should be 'executed in front of their families' on BBC1's The One Show. Photograph: Murdo Macleod for the Guardian Jeremy Clarkson faced further censure on Saturday after describing people who killed themselves by jumping under trains as "selfish". His comments in his column in the Sun newspaper provoked outrage from mental health charities. The Top Gear presenter is already mired in controversy for suggesting onBBC1's The One Show that public sector strikers should be "shot in front of their families". He was forced to apologise for that statement, which generated more than 21,000 complaints. Clarkson also made comments about train suicides in the same show and in his Sun column on Saturday, he said those who chose to kill themselves at railway stations caused "immense" disruption for commuters. "I have the deepest sympathy for anyone whose life is so mangled and messed up that they believe death's icy embrace will be better," he wrote. "However, it is a very selfish way to go because the disruption it causes is immense. And think what it's like for the poor train driver who sees you lying on the line and can do absolutely nothing to avoid a collision." Referring to those who jumped in front of trains as "Johnny Suicide", Clarkson said trains should resume their journey as soon as possible following a suicide and leave the body parts for scavenging animals. Catherine Johnstone, chief executive of the Samaritans, said the insensitivity of Clarkson's comments "truly beggars belief". She said: "While purporting to express sympathy for people who die this way, his remarks about their bodies constitute gross intrusion into the grief and shock of bereaved families and friends. "His notion that suicide is a selfish act shows how little he knows about the subject because, if he did, he would know that when a person attempts suicide they are so distressed that they genuinely believe their families will be better off without them. "The concept that their actions could be construed as selfish is the furthest thing from their mind." Johnstone added that insensitive media coverage of suicide could trigger so-called "copycat" deaths. "We have already made a complaint to Ofcom about his remarks on The One Show and we will now be taking up today's comments with the Press Complaints Commission." Paul Farmer, chief executive of Mind, described the comments as "extraordinarily tasteless". He said: "I think there will be many people who have lost loved ones to suicide and people who have contemplated suicide that will think it is in extremely bad taste. "It stands out like a sore thumb from what is increasingly a more supportive approach to suicide by the media. "People will feel like he is trivialising the subject and dismissing people who have taken their own lives. This is a man who really doesn't understand what he is talking about." The One Show presenter Matt Baker apologised on air for the suicide comments, admitting it was not a suitable conversation for a 7pm show. Clarkson's comments on public sector strikers on Wednesday's programme have left the BBC facing the biggest complaints storm since the "Sachsgate" row in 2008. Asked about the strikers, he said: "I'd have them all shot. I would take them outside and execute them in front of their families. I mean, how dare they go on strike when they've got these gilt-edged pensions that are going to be guaranteed while the rest of us have to work for a living?" Unison called for the presenter to be sacked and he later apologised. But BBC sources have said there would be no "massive inquest" into Clarkson's remarks about strikers.
  18. http://news.asiaone.com/print/news/singapore/2-dead-5-injured-fire-house-near-kovan 2 dead, 5 injured in fire at house near Kovan Tuesday, June 9, 2015 - 09:47AsiaOne SINGAPORE - An early morning fire razed a two-storey house along Parry Ave in Yio Chu Kang on Tuesday morning. Two people perished in the blaze and five other people were injured. RELATED STORIES 2 dead, 3 injured in Geylang fire 4 Malaysians killed in Geylang hostel fire Maid arrested over fire at employer's flat {C} According to a report by Lianhe Wanbao, there were a total of 10 occupants in the house when the fire broke out. The two dead victims were the wife of the house owner, who is a businessman, and a middle-aged Caucasian man, who was a business partner with the latter. Five others, including two men, two women and a child were sent to hospital for smoke inhalation. The fire was believed to have been caused by a short circuit, which led to an electrical appliance in the house catching fire. At the time of the fire, there were six people on the second storey of the house, including two children, aged 10 and 8. The house owner, his son, daughter-in-law and an older grandson managed to escape the fire. His younger grandson, who was with a maid at the back of the house, was saved when she jumped through a window to escape. The house owner's wife was found in a toilet on the second floor, while the male victim was found on the second floor. Two other occupants, the house owner's 80-year-old father and another maid, were on the first floor at the time of the fire. They managed to get out with help from firemen. In a statement, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said they were alerted to the fire at about 3am at No 6A, Parry Avenue off Yio Chu Kang Road. SCDF dispatched three fire engines, three ambulances, three Red Rhino and six support vehicles. Upon their arrival, they found the fire had engulfed the whole house and had penetrated through the roof. SCDF officers used four water jets to penetrate the burning house, while two additional jets were also deployed to prevent the fire from spreading to adjacent unit. The fire was brought under control within half an hour, and was fully extinguished at about 4.30am. Photo Gallery: 2 dead, 5 injured in fire at house near Kovan Click on thumbnail to view photos. The five casualties were conveyed to Singapore General Hospital for treatment, while one of the firefighters was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital for heat exhaustion.

  20. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AytvUYy4P_c The next time someone asks you for a cigarette and you don't have one or aren't willing to give one out, make sure you let them down gently. Otherwise they may just set your car on fire. That's what one woman reportedly did at a gas station in Jerusalem. NBC News reports that an Israeli woman asked a man for a cigarette, and when he refused she held a lighter to the fuel filler and ignited the fumes. The entire incident was captured by the gas station's security cameras. In the video, we see the man pulling the pump nozzle out of the car when he realizes it's on fire. The nozzle spews flaming gasoline onto the ground, and the blaze quickly engulfs the rear of the car. Police say the fire was extinguished shortly after by gas station workers, and that the woman was arrested, though she denied setting the car on fire intentionally. The most important lesson to be learned from this video is to never spark up while filling up your car, but if there's another takeaway, it's to be kind to everyone you meet. We're not implying that the man in this video was rude in any way, but you just never know if you're dealing with a rational person or a complete psychopath. 21. After a recent spate of engine fires, Ferrari has officially issued a recall of the 458 Italia. According to the automaker, an adhesive used to attach a heat shield under the rear fender can ignite under high temperatures, leading to a larger fire in the engine bay. We've seen at least four cases on the internet of flaming 458s like this one, and while we can't say for certain, it would seem this adhesive is the likely cause. Ferrari has designed a new heat shield that attaches with rivets, negating the need for the adhesive. Naturally, 458 owners are urged to call a dealer to schedule an appointment for the free fix.

  23. A 78-year-old retiree was fined S$3,000 for setting his neighbour's cat on fire. His act caused the cat to foam at the mouth. It also left the cat's face, neck and back badly burnt. Chua Tuang Seng, a father of two, pleaded guilty to the charge and will have to serve a jail term of two months if he cannot pay the fine. He committed the offence along the corridor outside his flat in Pasir Ris Drive on September 3 last year. Chua was sprinkling kerosene around his potted plants to get rid of ants when he noticed the tabby cat hiding among the plants. He believed the cat had defecated frequently outside his flat. He used a broom to chase the cat away but it hid below a metal shelf. Chua then squirted kerosene on it, lit a piece of newspaper and threw it towards the cat. The badly-burnt animal was later found foaming at the mouth by the sister of its owner, Mdm Salman Mohd Aris. The 49-year-old woman made a police report. The cat was sent to Mt Pleasant Veterinary Centre for examination. The cat suffered from swollen eyelids, skin loss at the neck, and singed fur and was hospitalised for four days. Chua, who suffers from throat and colon cancer, pleaded for leniency. District Judge Ng Peng Hong pointed out that Chua's act was "not right". He ordered Chua to pay Mdm Salman S$1,235 as compensation for medical costs incurred as result of his act. For the abuse, he could have been jailed up to a year and fined S$10,000. 24. Large fire at Phuket SuperCheap, reports of explosions [VIDEO] PHUKET: A large fire has broken out at the SuperCheap store on Thepkrassatri Rd in Phuket Town this evening (October 16). Claire Connell Wednesday 16 October 2013, 10:06PM http://youtu.be/duMT6f7TGkk Video: Eakkapop Thongtub The fire started at around 9.40pm this evening. Early reports say around 1,000 staff were inside SuperCheap at the time of the fire. There are now around 50-60 firetrucks at the scene, and around 300 firefighters. At 2am, there were still no details about the injured or if any people are dead. A support centre for the public has been set up at the Phuket Provincial Hall. A Phuket Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation official told The Phuket News on Thursday, “I have not received any reports about any injured or dead people. The fire is under control now. We have 15 officials from the department standing by at the scene to help.” An earlier report said one person had been treated at Vachira Hospital, but it was now established this man was not injured by the fire. Phuket Vice Governor Sommai Prijasilpa is now at the scene of the blaze along with mayors from other districts in Phuket. Police have now evacuated the area due to the risk of a possible explosion, both from the gas tanks inside SuperCheap and also the nearby Esso petrol station. Phuket News reporter at the scene Naraporn Tuarob said she arrived to find a lot of flames coming out of the building and people running from the scene. “At the moment I can hear explosions but I don’t know where they are coming from. The flames have moved to the Thanksina wood factory. “One couple told me they were about to pay the bill inside the store, and someone told them there was a fire – people were yelling “fire fire”. Then they ran out of the store and everyone else was running. They said everything was in chaos.” A pregnant Thai woman who lived in the village behind SuperCheap told The Phuket News on Wednesday night, “My husband and I heard a loud bomb noise around 9.30pm. Then I saw the flames and we escaped out. There is only one main exit onto the main road, but we went the back way and managed to get out.” Rasha Shidmaher, originally from Iran but living in Phuket for two years, was driving in the area when he saw the fire, and stopped to take a video. "It was awful when I saw the people crying and trying to leave the area where the fire was. There were people screaming and trying to leave the area. I saw a lot of ambulances as well from all around the island." Families living nearby have been ordered by officials to evacuate the area. One early report said the damage could be around B900 million. Nuengruethai Buddawong was at SuperCheap around 10.30pm this evening, after she drove there from Khao Rang Hill to see what the fire was. "I can hear the sirens and the bomb sounds. The traffic police have blocked the main road and the alleyway to get through to SuperCheap. Now I'm at the electric company office close by. On the main road there are a lot people."
