  2. http://www.chinapost.com.tw/taiwan/national/national-news/2014/08/05/414077/ROC-Army.htm TAIPEI, Taiwan -- Army Sergeant Hsieh Shu-chen (謝淑貞) has officially become the first female R.O.C Army Ranger after completing a rigorous 10-week training last week, local media reported yesterday. The 26-year-old Hsieh of the 21st Artillery Command under the 6th Army Corps was awarded the Ranger badge on Aug. 1 after successfully undergoing 10-week training at an Army Special Forces training center in the mountainous Guguan area in Taichung City (台中谷關), the reports said. The Army said Hsieh was one of the 26 that successfully completed the training. The course took in 54 candidates. She is the only female who completed the training. According to the Chinese-language Apple Daily, there were another three female candidates joining Hsieh when the training session began. But all three of them had washed out of the arduous training session within a week. After officially becoming an Army Ranger, Hsieh expressed gratitude to her fellow candidates and instructors. It is with their encouragement that she was able to pass the test, Hsieh said. There were times when she wanted to give up, but Hsieh said her mother always taught her not to give up halfway, a motto she keeps in mind. According to the Army Special Forces training center, a potential ranger has to complete a four-stage, 10-week training before participating in a four-day final test to become a ranger. Superhuman Training During the 10 weeks, a candidate has to run 10,000 meters every morning plus complete another 1,000-meter obstacle course. He or she has to swim another 1,000 meters every day at noon and wear 25 kilograms of equipment for a 10-kilometer walk. Each day concludes with muscular endurance training. A potential Ranger also has to undergo all kinds of extraordinary tests, such as overcoming a fear of heights by jumping into water from a 22-meter-tall platform. A trainee needs to overcome high-altitude-related problems and be able to swim in cold water, it noted. The final exam is a four-day mountain training at altitudes of 1,500 to 2,600 meters, with candidates resting less than five hours during the four-day span, the training center added. Hsieh did not get any special treatment during the process because of her gender, the Army said. Respect!! for most of us, even at our peak, I don't think we can finished this course.
  3. The Anak Bukit Flyover in Bukit Timah will be the first road in Singapore to get permanent noise barriers. Construction of the barriers - measuring 6m in height and 225m in length - began yesterday and will be completed in October, bringing some relief to nearby residents who have complained about noise pollution. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said yesterday that this is part of a trial to assess the effectiveness of such barriers in reducing traffic noise. It will also finish installing similar structures along the West Coast Highway near Block 44, Telok Blangah Drive, by the middle of next year. The new flyover being built along Braddell Road near Block 138, Bishan Street 12, will also get the barriers some time in 2016. These three locations were selected based on their high traffic volumes and noise levels, explained the LTA yesterday. The barriers will cost about $3.8 million in total, a spokesman added. Jurong GRC MP Halimah Yacob had raised the issue of noise in the Anak Bukit Flyover's vicinity as early as 2012, when residents voiced concerns over the widening of the road - part of the recent expansion of the Pan-Island Expressway. "As the carriageways will come closer to the adjacent (condominium) Sherwood Towers... I asked the LTA whether they could put up noise barriers," Madam Halimah told The Straits Times. "I was really very glad when they accepted the idea... given our very compact environment where living spaces jostle side by side with busy roads, I would think that this would be a necessary feature to mitigate noise and provide a better living environment." The barriers are made of a combination of transparent and absorptive panels. The latter are lined internally with rock wool, a material commonly used to absorb sound. Sherwood Towers residents whom The Straits Time spoke to yesterday said noise had been a long-time problem, and that it often gets "quite noisy" at night. Mr Liu San, a 49-year-old chef at a restaurant in Bukit Timah Plaza beside the condominium, has been living at Sherwood Towers for more than 20 years. "If they really help to reduce the noise, that will be good," he said of the barriers. "I've seen similar sound walls in European countries." Others said they were fed up waiting for a solution, while some were resigned to having to live with noise, even after the barriers come up. Retiree Chan Heng Wah, 72, who has lived in the area for four years, said: "We are surrounded by traffic on all four sides. There is no way to block all the noise." The LTA said it would monitor how well the barriers work before considering a "targeted islandwide implementation programme". http://www.straitstimes.com/news/singapore/transport/story/bukit-timah-have-first-road-noise-barriers-20140813

  6. Japanese auto giant Toyota will start selling its first fuel cell sedan this financial year, with a price tag of around 7 million yen (US$70,000), the company announced on Wednesday. The vehicles will begin rolling out by March in the home market, it said, and during the summer of 2015 it will make the environmentally friendly cars available in the United States and Europe. "Hydrogen is a particularly promising alternative fuel since it can be produced using a wide variety of primary energy sources, including solar and wind power," the automaker said in a statement. Fuel cell cars are seen as the Holy Grail of green cars as they are powered by a chemical reaction of hydrogen and oxygen, which produces nothing more harmful than water. Toyota's fuel cell sedan can travel about 700 kilometres (435 miles) without refuelling, about three times further than an electric car, and it only takes three minutes refuel, similar to a gasoline engine car, Toyota said. The company, while not abandoning electric altogether, sees the fuel cell as the next logical step after its big early success with the Prius gas-electric hybrid, which has sold about 3.7 million units since its launch in the late 1990s. "Hydrogen does not emit CO2, so it could be a key player to realise a low-carbon society. It can be produced with fossil fuel such as natural gas and even with sludge accumulated in the sewage system," said Toyota vice president Mitsuhisa Kato. "We believe hydrogen could become a very important source of energy in the future." This is the first time Toyota has given a specific timeframe for its fuel cell cars, which it had previously said would go on the market in 2015. The announcement came a day after Japan's industry ministry said the government will strongly support the hydrogen and fuel cell sector in a "strategic roadmap". The ministry said the market related to hydrogen and fuel cell products and infrastructure is expected to expand from about one trillion yen in 2030 to about eight trillion yen within two decades. While automakers expect eventual government subsidies to make fuel cell vehicles more accessible for general drivers, the price tag unveiled by Toyota on Wednesday is also a nice surprise for potential customers - it had been widely expected that a fuel cell vehicle would cost around 10 million yen. But many hurdles still need to be overcome before fuel cell vehicles become a common sight on roads, most notably, the network of hydrogen refuelling stations, Toyota said. The Japanese government has also said it will try to make hydrogen available at a price similar to or less than gasoline fuel, while increasing the number of hydrogen refuelling stations to about 100 next year. The company said it will initially start selling the model only in the regions "where hydrogen refuelling infrastructure is being developed". The price ranges for a fuel cell unit for the US and European markets have not been decided, Toyota said. Source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/business/toyota-names-price-for/1205882.html
  7. Python hides in Eunosville toilet bowl, bites housewife's thigh May 1 was Labour Day, her son's second birthday, and now, Madam Noraslinda Asat (above) has another reason to remember this date for life. The 34-year-old housewife was bitten by a python as she sat on the toilet bowl last Thursday, around 5.10pm. She was in her Eunosville home's master bedroom ensuite bathroom when she felt the sharp pain. Standing up, she saw the jaws of a 1.8m-long python clamped on the back of her right thigh. She was taken to hospital where she received an injection and was discharged. The snake has not been caught and Madam Noraslinda is still traumatised. She has refused to use either toilet at home, preferring public ones at places like the coffee shop. Read the full report in The New Paper on Thursday (May 8) http://www.tnp.sg/content/python-hides-eunosville-toilet-bowl-bites-housewifes-thigh This is scary! If it was a man in this case, his kuku bird might have been bitten off by the python. Make it a habit to look carefully into the toilet bowl before sitting down to do your business.

  16. During driving school, we were taught to use the horn to notify or warn others on the road of something, especially if it could advert an accident. Recently, i noticed, when you honked at some one, for any reason, be it they are blocking the road, filtering dangerously into a lane or driving in such a way it may cause an accident, they get upset. it could be a driver, cyclist or a pedestrain, the reaction is the same. what the hell is happening? If you are doing something wrong, be it delibrately or un-intentionally, a honk is usually the way to inform you. why is there a need to be irritated or agitated?

  19. How many times have you realised that we always end up veering a little off course after we have decided on doing something? It's pretty often for me. Just the other day, I was at one of the hawker centres getting dinner. I was pretty certain I wanted to have chicken rice as it's pretty famous. Even my relatives travel all the way from the other side of Singapore just to patronise this stall. However, for some reasons unknown, I ended up with a bowl of prawn noodles. Was I happy with the prawn noodle? I was, actually. And it was pretty tasty. But then halfway through I started feeling a little crossed with myself. As a matter of fact, whenever I am at this hawker center, I always end up having the prawn noodles no matter how many times I tell myself to eat the chicken rice. Same goes for my career. How the hell I ended up as a photographer and not what I wanted to work as baffles me. I was supposed to be in a bank or something - along that line of trade that I studied and graduated from! So do I regret what I am doing now? No, I don't. But I do wonder how it would be like if I had stayed on course. I certainly hope when it comes to my first car, I will not be in this situation. I have always told myself when I grow up, my first car will be a Honda. A 1998 Integra Type R to be exact. Now that I'm getting older, I honestly don't think that dream will come true. Reasons being that everything regarding a car - from maintenance to modification - requires a fair amount of money that's more than my monthly pay. So really, how many of you readers out there actually managed to turn out what you imagined yourself to be?
  20. Recently, i bought some promo tix from the jetstar for our annual family trip in Nov. 6 person in total. Instead of sourcing for travel insurance, i just bought it together with tix. After I paid for it, i didnt hear anything from the jetstar or the insurer AIG regarding to the insurance. I didnt chase them for the policy doc since, i have proof that i have paid and the trip is still some time away. 2 days ago, jetstar change my itineray and we are made to come back 2 days later than our original booking. I wanted to check if I would be reimbused for the additional days so i went requested for the policy doc to be send to me. To my horror, only 5 person in the trip were mentioned in the policy paper. 1 person is missed out ! When i checked with jetstar, they said i have made payment and there shld not be any problem with my insurance. But the insurance details , i will need to check with AIG. I called AIG , they said they only received application for 5 persons and what went missing during my applications is not within their control and does assume no responsiblity to the missing insurance cover. I send them the itineray, with 6 person name.. and they shld at least tell me that 1 of them is not cover as per my itinerary, instead of i finding out myself. 1) they didnt give me the policy promptly when i first bought 2) when ask on the policy, they didnt advise that the policy is not the same as my itinerary 3) my address in the policy is wrong. *Gosh*... what irresponsible response from AIG ?!? Aniway, i am asking them if they could cancelled the entire cover as i feel that they process is not clear and fail my expectation. They are not willing to cancel.. and now i am waiting for the CS to bring this up for review. This is total crap..

  23. Hi Bros/Sis, My Jazz has reached its 3 year mark and all 4 tyres have shown wore out conditions including a right rear which has been dropping 30+ Kpa per week. However, it is to my knowledge that my Rim size is slightly different as it is 16 inch rim. The info on the tyre reads: 185 / 55 R16 83H I went to Shell earlier and the only tyre they carry to fit my rim requirement is Falken 912. (However reading reviews about it was slightly negative.) I hope any bro/sis with similiar tyre specification can advise me on which other brand/model/workshop to go to. (I previously looked forward to Bridgestone GR90 but they don't seem to produce my rim size tyres.) My priority is comfort, quietness and decent grip since I do not drive fast. Please advise. Many thanks Ejazz
