    Which first?

I'm new to detailing, so I'm wondering if the following sequence is suitable: Wash -> Claybar -> ColorX -> Cleaner Wax Do give me guidance.
  2. Sleepless nite, thought I write something on the 159 on its launch. There was no test drive on launch day. The crowd waited in anticipation of the 159. When the 159 and Brera rolled out, more people obviously checked out the 159. Aesthetically, it puts 3 series, A4, 93 all put together to shame. Beautiful curves and unbelievably good looking front end. Rear end looks like a stretched out 156. It looks longer, sleeker too. No hidden rear door handles this time but you get nice looking door handles still. Side mirrors no longer the small aero looking ones on the 156 and 147. but looking at its shape, its still pretty aerodynamic. not the best looking mirror, but def more practical. The car simply looks stunning despite the agent choosing to roll out the most boring colour, darkish silver. the brera was in black but this post will be on the 159. Ok, let's get inside. Amazing looking interior. triple gauges and aircon vents staring at you. The instrumentation cowls will just blow you away. There were enough reading lamps front and back and they all have a nice touch to it. Some gripes though. Aircon vents only turn left right up down, unlike the rotational ones previously & they're still kinda small. the centre console points towards the driver so the passenger doesn't quite get the centre aircon! Damn, what were these italians thinking? The driver feels very hot is it? Others would be no mirror on the passenger visor. How can?? even a 147 1.6 pre f/l has that with light some more! the doors don't close with a solid thud. thats not really a problem if it helps to reduce weight. but the 159 is still a darn heavy car at 1490kg. so doors close with a klang. even a 147 shuts better. strange rite?? The launch car doesnt have factory fit leather so it has to be locally fitted i guess. based on my experience, if it doesnt come factory fit, dont bother fitting here. the quality just isnt the same. the fabric they provide in fact feels more expensive. also, the rear seats don't seem to be able to fold down. i thought they would. & there's no cup holders on the rear arm rests. Strange again but maybe the higher selespeed models will have. Next, the manual shift was a delight. 6 speed, shorter throw than previous ones (GT and 147). Clutch felt good to depress, not light till theres no feeling. overall, this is one darn good car looks wise with a few minor details left out. i think the selespeed models will have all the luxuries this standard manual doesnt have. but imo, the manual is the one to get. no one needs to tell u how the selespeed works...won't get into that here. theres one last problem. its priced very close to the 3 series. with 3 series, u get rwd plus abit more body value. in other words, the 159 depreciates just as much as the 3s. but dont forget the 3s is made in south africa while the 159 italy. so u can say it is not injustice to be near 3s price. but then again, i still think its not 3s priced kinda car. i def wont buy it at that price, but neither will i get the 3s. but for those who have to get the 3s, the 159 may just change yr mind. check out for yrself and test it bcos after all, the 159 is the faster car.
  3. A Brief Introduction 'The Practical Edix', 'The Edix Experience... One Year On', 'Edix - Minivan With The Extra Loving Touch', Call me delirious, call me obsessive. Conjuring up the title has never been this difficult. One must tread along the side of objectivity and neutrality without indulging in colourful language and narrative description. Just as in life, no human is infallible; The Edix has its own unique traits, both good and bad. As part of Edix Junior's birthday bash, I shall be presenting my amateurish views on its practicality and hope that they will be of assistance to the undecided family man At The Carpark The Edix makes its presence felt without appearing aggressive. The controversial mix of the prominent Honda embalm and front grilles, wavy smooth doors and chrome handles, together with the angulated rear windscreen and tailgate spoiler renders the Edix hard to miss at carparks and roads alike. Getting Into the Car The interior lights, display meters and ignition key knob illuminate with the unlocking of the Edix, providing 30 seconds of convenient entry in a dim environment. Retractable door windows with power mirrors and integrated lights exude a minor hint of luxury. Given the reasonable height of 1.610m and the near-floor landing of the platform, passengers are able to make their entry with great ease. The elderly in particular will fancy the ergonomical feature Doors close solidly on a heavy note, resembling the continental cars. At times, get ready for some pleasant surprise when you spot those puzzled eyes staring hard at 3 individuals seated in front Sitting In The Car With the exception of the queer 3-man front seating, one can perform myriad of permutations in the seat configuration and arrangement. Being able to sit beside you, your soulmate will adore you for the loving touch Not withstanding the 2 fixed rear side seats, legroom is never an issue even for 6-footers. The dashboard looks modern and classy with the external temperature, remaining mileages and 2 tripmeters displayed. I tend to rely more on the remaining mileages as the onboard computer can promptly warn me of impending fuel depletion based on my driving habits and the road condition. The inner double tray and underseat box of the front centre seat coupled with the triple cup holder are thoughtful features that provide extra neat space for miscellaneous items. Travelling In The Car The major shortcoming of the Edix lies in its ride capabilities A peformance car, it is definitely not. The chassis is rather heavy for the fuel capacity of the Edix viz 1395 kg. This clearly explains the overall underpowered feel as well as the inferior fuel economy as compared to the lighter Toyota Wish 1300 kg and Honda Civic 1230 kg. However, in spite of the additional curb weight, Edix in its own genre, is capable to producing up to 14.5 km/l which is nothing to be embarrassed about. The abbreviated length of the Edix viz 4.285 m proves to be an advantage as its turning radius is a mere 4.9 m, smaller than the conventional MPVs and sedans. The monotonous road handling typical of Japanese cars reside in the Edix as well. Body roll is fair allowing the driver to negotiate turns at ~30 km/h. The same applies to suspension as one has to overcome humps at 20 - 25 km/h. Changing of gear (2,200 rpm - 3,000 rpm, depending on the terrain and your right foot i.e. personality traits) comes with mild jerks and is not as refined as the European makes. Luckily for the Edix, cruising remains hassle-free even on a fully loaded day viz 80 km/h at 2,000 rpm, 90 km/h at 2,200 rpm, 100 km/h at 2,400 - 2,500 rpm. The only other saving grace comes from the agile steering and firm braking. Road noise insulation is suboptimal at 80 km/h and beyond. Pillars are tall and broad. Therein lies the potential danger of missing pedestrians and vehicles while approaching crossings or overtaking respectively. Believe me, your field of vision can be impaired by the driver's Pillars A and B in particular and therefore extra caution needs to be exercised on the road. Creature comfort is always a subjective issue to cover. Personally, I'm not paranoid over the number of cupholders, air con vents or arm/leg rest. The air con works fast and efficient enough to silence every critic viz 27 - 28 deg Cel for a couple, 25 - 26 deg Cel for 6 adults, all at the lowest fan speed. Anything colder, you would have thought that 'The Day After Tomorrow' is having its run in Singapore Parking The Car Due to its wide girth viz 1,795m, one has to utilise the side mirrors more often than one would have for a sedan. On the other hand, as far as parking goes, it is not hard to realise that the Edix is actually shorter than what it is perceived from inside the car. All it takes eventually is a matter of getting used to the well endowed size of the Edix. Getting Out Of The Car With the gearknob located on the dashboard, the right placed driver can make his way out via the left door easily, if faced with tight parking confines. The alarm bells start ringing when one either forgets to apply the seatbelt or overlooks the inactivation of the headlights. The latter proves useful to me as it prevents me from wasting the car battery overnight. Fuel Consumption (Shell 98) 0 - ~1,000 km (run-in) mainly 90 % City 10 % Highway 9.9 - 10.75 km/l The sole occasion when my Edix hits 9.9 km/l reminds me of my ignorance in checking the tyre pressure viz 230kPa. 1,000 - >20,000 km 90% City 10 % Highway to 10% City 90% Highway 11.5 - 14.5 km/l Driving Habits By the way, you will usually see me travelling leisurely in the centre lane, whether on roads (60 - 70 km/h) or highways (80 - 90 km/h). Overtaking of vehicles is performed only when the cars in front are cruising below the speed limit on less congested days viz road hoggers. After all, in a small country like Singapore, how much time can be saved when one becomes impatient behind the wheel? A mere few minutes perhaps but certainly with the malicious element included. Financial Consideration The psychological barrier of making purchases with the parallel importers is truly a tall one to overcome. One is confronted with multiple uncertainties of having cars from alternative sources e.g. shutdown of unstable companies, empty freebie promises, long waiting time for car arrival. On the other hand, however, it would be unfair to label PIs as unreliable dealers because experienced players like Hitman, Hup Long, Pinnacle Motors and VinCar are competent in delivering favourable results. Incidentally, they are the pioneers in the introduction of the Edix to our roads 2 years ago so one is less likely to lose the plot when liaising with them. As for all things in life, every car purchase whether mainstream or otherwise, is often made with some element of luck in the process. There is no telling in this world which car comes with faulty parts and is potentially at risk of breaking down. Even established companies in Singapore have their rides recalled so anything under the sun can happen. A car is an expensive liability. Thus one must note the details that accompany the purchase. Here are a few simple calculations which I hope, would be helpful to the buyer : 1. UPFRONT price = SELLING price (i.e. the tag you see in the papers) + ACCESSORY items (the 'freebies' : usually include leather seat, sports rim, rear sensor and carpet) + FINANCIAL surcharge (administrative charges) + ADVANCED instalment (First month) 2. TOTAL payment amount = UPFRONT price (i.e. all of the above items) + remaining instalments (largely influenced by the INTEREST rate) 3. MAINTENANCE cost = MONTHLY instalment + FUEL + GANTRIES + INSURANCE + PARKING EXPENSES + ROAD TAX + WORKSHIP CHARGES After addressing the payment, the next item on the checklist should be the A4 sized papers that you will be placing your precious signatures upon i.e. the Letter of Warranty, Delivery Certificate, Hire Purchase Agreement and Motor Cover Insurance Kindly note that the conventional 3-year warranty or 60,000 km coverage may not apply to all car components over the entire 3 years as the number of parts under warranty decreases with each passing year. Therefore one must compare and contrast the various clauses and offers stated in black and white by the PIs. Conclusion Many thanks for bearing with me through this lengthy account. The Edix has been a fabulous and worthy buy so far I hereby extend my salute to all the Edixons for their selflessness in sharing first hand reviews with fellow drivers, especially Bro Seansene and Bro Blackmafia. Congratulations to Bro MacLuver for the great initiative in setting up our very own Edix forum Finally... HAPPY FIRST BIRTHDAY, EDIX JUNIOR

    JW First hand

Just bought a JW Clay, Prime and Trigger from Gen 2 and did a detailing job with it. Really regret i din't take any pictures because i can see some distinct difference. After washing and claying (the JW Claybar is really so easy to use compared to the Soft 99, good stuff) and proceeded to do a Prime. As my paintwork has already been badly acid etched, thus i decided not to do anything much, just want to do a basic surface prep with JW Prime. Indeed, the yellow sponge turned black, indicating alot of chemical contaminants on my paint surface. Buffing off the residue is a breeze, in fact my wife was helping wipe off the residue, trust me, she didn't even sweat a bit and was enjoying cleaning it off to a shine. I was, on the other hand trying to rub as hard as possible hoping to get the surface as clean as possible. Then i sprayed jett over my bonnet and to my shock, i could see the bonnet just became so wet looking. Comparing to the side panel, it look so wet and felt so slick. In no more than 20 minutes, i've already coated a layer of jett to the whole car. Overall feel, my greatest detailing product so far. Now its on the durability test before i get back. Let me rate some of the products i've used before Meguiar Paint Cleaner, Show Car Glaze, Paint Sealant. Quite good results, glaze gives the car a very wet look, but use of product is very hard. Alot of buffing and removal of residue required. Paint sealant only lasted for 1-2weeks before water beading becomes poor Zaino Z1 and Z5. Creates a very wet look. But buffing off the residue of Z5 is rather a pain too. I had to re-apply a little of Z5 to get it off. JW gives a very similar, or if not a slightly wetter look to Zaino's. But only using 1/4 of the effort required. When i bought it, i hope it was not some bull sxxt here talking about the ease of use and the brillance it gives, but after using it, this is really not some bxxxxxxt stuff. Tks Gen2 for the great intro to this product. Now i'll swear by this product

  7. I have been an owner of many cars before, and always one lazy bum when it comes to washing, waxing, cleaning, vacuuming car. The previous car I owned I didnt even washed it once in the 2 years I owned it, anyone believe ? 2 days ago, I drove my new BMW320i out of the showroom, immediately my Wifey said 'are you gonna wash / polish this car or are u gonna be as lazy as before, which will in time make our car the dirtiest looking BMW in our estate"? Lan Lan, so on advice from a brother on this forum, I decided to try out Menzerna paint protection system treatment for the 1st time. I dont even know what I was in for as detailing is alien to me. I used to wash my car plate number with dynamo cloth washer liquid only bcos I was gonna buy 4-D Anyway, I got my wife to send it to Studio 12 at AMK autopoint in the morning and car was ready for collection by around 1 pm. Got the car back nice n clean. Since I do not drive to work, I only got home at 8pm to see the results under fluorescent lighting [ i lived in a terrace house with shleter]. In the rather subdued lighting, the paintwork initially didnt look much different from before since the car was already polished by PML. What was rather nice was that at certain angles, u could see clear reflections. My car colour is metallic silver, i could almost see the reflection image of the fluorescent light on the ceiling. i believe if it was black colour, the reflection would be nicer? Oh my sold car was black . This morning I finally had the chance to see it clearly under morning daylight before I drove to work, it looks glossy but isnt sticky to the fingers like typical waxing. Saw a few spots of dont know what, maybe tree sap, on the bonnet[wnet out dinner last night n parked in open. Put on wet tissue as saw on forum discussions, and after 30 secs wiped them off with drier tissue.....the marks are gone ! then later also found that the evaporated moisture from my damp cleaning tissue had left behind some 'water spots' when seen from certain angles. Next I used a fully dry tissue to remove them in a single swap...tada !!!! Those dirt seem to be removal easily. So looks like it was worth the $$ and trouble putting on the Menzerna on my beemer. Was told it was a 6 layer application, including acrylic application or similar. Whatever it is, i think all new car owners should have this done. Sorry I am equally lazy at taking pictures. Hopefully this short description gives everyone a good guage of the product.

  10. was just wondering what is the first thing that should be done on a brand new car so as to preserve the body work.
  11. OK. The Fumoto Oil Drain Valve was installed when I filled the crankcase with Conoco Hydroclear Super All Season Diamond 5W30. I have hit 9.5k km with this oil. I started oil change this evening after driving back home. The engine was off for at most 3min when I came back armed with rubber gloves and the low profile plastic container. Now if you can recall for those who bought the valve, installed it and have not used it yet, the flick tap is very difficult to engage when it is not installed. I guess there is no lube and it is very dry. Now with valve installed. I just crawled underneath, flick and the oil gushed out. Easier then when the valve is dry. Only 3min after engine shut off, the oil was really hot. Flowed fast. I intend to do a UOA for this oil and counted 15seconds of oil flow before I collected the oil. Even the plastic bottle became soft from the hot oil. Didn't melt. I'm using laboratory boil proof grade Nalgene bottle. The oil is still draining as I'm typing. So convenient. Now, I have to remind myself to close the tap before putting in the new oil.
  12. Hi all I finally got down to installing my stuff. for those who remember, i previously had a 'hanging amp" rack. Decided to take it all out and redo it. But unfortunately, after getting all the necessary stuff ( i was also doing some upgrades), i ran out of $$$$, thus i had to improvise. So, the wiring is quite messy as i could not afford more 4 gauge power cables and i had to salvage my old setup. Also, it was my first time with a jig saw, it when i was cutting the wood, it was as though it had a mind of its own!!!! aniway.. here's a pic of my hardware:
  13. i decided to try something on my 4.5 years ride...my first polishing..... First 2 pics are taken after claybar and scratch X.... from the 3rd pics onwards is after polish and wax....sorry for the dark pics, cos the pics taken at night, i completed my polishing at night time..... did the whole process within 5 hours with 1 person helping me.... after the whole process, i am quite satisfied with my work...i am new to detailing...this is my first try... hopefully can learn more from you guys... comments are welcome...

  17. Just spoken to Borneo Motors SE about the faclifted Vios - Basic model - No sports rims (pre-facelifted model came with sports rims as standard) - No body kit (pre-facelifted model came with body kit as standard) - Only exterior cosmetic changes to the front and rear lights, front grill and bumpers. - Interior, engine and body is exactly the same as pre-facelifted model - Selling price for manual : $52,488 - a S$1,900 price increase over pre-facelifted model, yet comes WITHOUT bodykit and sports rims. - OMV is only a few hundred dollars more than the pre-facelifted model - about S$12,000. I was told that customers found the pre-facelifted model of better value, & the showroom and demo unit have all been snapped up. The new face-lifted model display units will arrive only in early Dec 2005. The SE said it is better to hold on as with more COEs released, prices will drop - which I find is reliable information, since Borneo Motors is one of the big players who determine whether COE prices hear North or South. Personally, for S$52,488, I find it expensive for a Thai assembled product. A pre bred Japan assembled Sunny is selling for just $49,000 and Lancer for only S$51,000.
  18. On NST today. Claim huge savings! However, what they didn't illustrate is that there is a 4% penalty for full early redemption. Go to DBS website and see what I mean. (I can not imagine what processing charge is equivalent to 2 % of o/s loan. It is purely labour costs I would think and it would be the same whether the loan amts are big or small) However, the website did not say whether there is penalty for partial redemption. If there is no penalty for partial redemption, then the early redemption penalty has no effect cos you could prepay 99% of the loan first and pay the last $ later ie full redemption. Yeah, charge me 4% of a $... Anyway, it is a good start for motorists as we have been screwed too long by the banks. Interesting to note that this product is offered when interest rates are going up. Wonder whether they will yank it off the mkt when interest rates start to decline???
  19. jus got the car last thur... the problem now is... i planned to do both glare (got it at 288 during a promo at car-nival)... and i consider doing tinting also maybe coolnlite as imm very near to my place... headache now is... should i tint first or polish first? the car is a sunny ex manual silver... also planning to add strut bar infront for better cornering... i heard alutec is good... but any workshop at westside that got it? should i change the main light to philip vision plus... will it be a waste of money consider the oem light quite bright laio... wat abt spark plug and filter? should i change or not...
  20. jellyfish went shopping at stamford tires at loke yang with one of his kaki , and got a long long shopping list so buy so items brought are : 1)meguairs ultimate wash mitt(wash wash ) 2)two meguairs applicator pads 3)1 roll of DOVE synthetic chamois cloth(for allround wiping) 4)one black plastic can of arourall chamois (to dry car) 5)i roll of DOVE polishing cloth 6)soft 99 150 g white claybar(for yellow and white car use) 7)autoglym super resin polish(SRP) 8)autoglym extra gloss portection(EGP) 9)meguairs gold class eudurance tire protectant gel(smells like berrys) 10)meguairs nxt carwash (purple in colour and smell like fruits) so happily me and my friend drove (suby 1.6 ts white)to a multi mscp and started to give the car a cooling down period , hot car no good for soaping down , so we opened up the bonnet to let the heat from the engine escape . at the same time read the instruction on the diff product. after ard 45 min we closed the bonnet and started wetting up the car , followed by pouring 1 ounce , kinda little according to us , but beginner , just listen the the label lor , so into the red bucket the 1 ounce of nxt wash and filled up the red bucket , wow it smells nice , better not taste how it taste , (smell fruity)then took out the ultimate wash mitt , and found out that actually must put our whole hand into the mitt like a glove , and this thing sucks up water from the pail like nothing (out of the package)then proceed to wash up the car from top down . giving it some good wiping to rid as many loose dirt as possible. then we use the remaining nxt wash for the rims and tires wif a coconut brush and crappy sponge, (notice that actually 1 ounce is actually enuf to lift dirt liao , nowonder so good).then we gave the car a good hose off . by then the car really look better as it has not been washed for weeks/month, but the war is not far from over , we started cutting up the white claybar into a rolled size of a big marble(gundu if those knew what the hell issit)so with 2 guys maybe its gonna be faster.this soft 99 claybar really works , tree sap which took us hours to remove just faded off with the slightest effort on our part , this stuff really works , we work on the roof of the car and proceed slowly to the lower part .but we found out that this claybar is so brutally effective that the colour of the car immediately shocked us , we thought the car is white in colour , but after the claybar passed by , what we thought was white wasn`t that white after all , and we struggled to match the colour we cleaned as the car was yellowed by the rain in jurong and tuas(those who work there will know)it was hard work to match the pure white clean surface to the yellowed part, pls beware of the consiquences if any newbie like us wanna try to clay their rides , it took us around 3 hours to clay the subaru ts , worst part we found out is the rear boot and rear bodykit as the exahust yellowed the rear up pretty badly secon was the roof wif max number of tree sap and bird poo . we found out that water is really needed for claying as a big sponge was called to provide water for lubrication. after finally finished wif the claybaring we did another wash this time without the nxt(dunno if we needed it for second time wash) then we dried up the car wif the arourall super chamois and waited for it to dry even further , next we used the allround chamois cut into smaller piece to wipe off the water marks that dried on the car. this time we can see that the car have less visible swirl marks compared to last time (maybe due to the claybar) then for a test we onli applied the SRP onto the applicator pads and applied on the roof of the car onli , application was easy , use a little on the applicator and in circular motion use moderate strength to polish it up , finishing the last touch by wiping it in straight line to ensure even coat. and leave it to haze and dry , (found out the applicator got some white colour on it dunno why) then after the haze dried we use the polishing cloth to rub gently , and some white particle came off dunno what issit , looks/feel rubbery i might say ,then we applied the EGP on another applicator sparingly , and this stuff stinks!!! smell like some chemical . but we did it any way luckily the wind was blowing gently making it more bearable. after that we took a break and wonder if we missed out any thing or cxxk up any step , so far so good , then we use the clay bar which by now turned grey to clay the rims and the wheel arch and exahust chrome tip after 1 hour we took another small piece of polishing cloth and started to buff the EGP. And then we compared the result. this is what we found out; 1)the surface is so slippery that if we were to heat up the roof to fry an egg wif no oil , the egg won`t stick(it is that slick) 2)the swirl marks wre there still , but compared to other places we claybared but no polish or sealent done, the swirl marks is lessened by 85% although we still see big time scratch mark from low lying trees , but we know that we could have done better in the claybaring part , and SRP part too . 3)the surface did not display a deep shine but more of a thin shine like those of a new car , not perfect but good enuf(anyway the car has never been shinier since after leaving the showroom) 4)those surface we claybared showed water sheeting , but the autoglym coated surface could bead the water into a O shape , but due to the first time testing of such product we forgot to time the whole part , but this is what we did , clay whole car(nearly as we could have done better if given the time) we started late (1900 hrs) applied the tire shine(smell so good you swear that its berry juice , scary) tested the autoglym on the roof of the car onli.end time was(2230 hrs)sigh. but one thing for sure , my friend is gonna buy those claybar , wash mitt , nxt wash , EGP, SRP , tire shine , polishing cloth and applicator pads.he is gonna complete the rest of the kiwi session after he buy the stuff as he find it paiseh to use mine , lol , but thanx to my brudder here who contributed to the information which i need to choose and buy , and thanx to mrmazda3 for the advise on what to buy . see when jellyfish free , will go to see you guys in action. but any way , any one can comment on the steps we did wrong of could be better , apart form having no time to polish up the whole car .
