  1. Man found guilty of bribing SCDF officerPOSTED: 11 Feb 2014 14:27 A businessman was convicted of bribing a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer in his attempt to flee a traffic accident scene. SINGAPORE: A businessman was convicted of bribing a Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) officer in his attempt to flee a traffic accident scene. 50-year-old Goh Choon Hee, a director of East Home Maintenance Service, was involved in a traffic accident with a taxi at the junction of Upper Serangoon Road and Hougang Avenue 2 on June 20, 2013. SCDF fire biker Sergeant Samuel Anandaraj Anthonyraj witnessed the accident and rendered assistance. Goh tried to flee the scene in his car but was stopped by SGT Samuel, who asked the accused to step out of his car. Eventually, Goh did. SGT Samuel suspected Goh was drunk. Wanting to flee the scene, Goh then tried to offer S$1,000 to the fire biker. The prosecution has urged the court to impose a three-month sentence. The maximum penalty is a five-year jail term and S$100,000 fine. Goh is expected to be sentenced on Wednesday. - CNA/ac (source: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/man-found-guilty-of/992128.html )

When The Straits Times visited the park on Wednesday morning, at least 300 white-coloured fish about a foot long each were seen floating on a 200m stretch of the river close to Bishan Road. Many were decomposing under the hot sun. Cleaners were seen wading through the river gathering the fish. Residents said that they spotted the dead fish at about noon on Tuesday. Many long-time residents said this was the first time they had ever witnessed mass fish deaths in Bishan-Ang Mo Kio Park. 13. Ikea just can't get a break. First, the international purveyor of self-assembled furniture and Scandanavian hors d'ouvres got roped into the horsemeat scandal when traces of horse DNA were found in meatballs and sausages it sold. Now, according to the Guardian, almond cakes from its restaurants in 23 countries are being pulled after bacteria usually found in fecal matter was discovered. The Swedish retailer stopped sales of its almond cakes after Chinese customs authorities found two batches that fell short of the country's hygiene standards, the Wall Street Journal reported. Ikea said Chinese customs officials last December seized and destroyed a batch of 1,800 cakes imported from Sweden after tests revealed that the cakes contained a prohibitively high level of coliform bacteria

  15. Have been following the intense search in the news, what a tragic end .. http://news.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNew...126-398022.html The Star/Asia News Network Saturday, Jan 26, 2013 SUBANG JAYA - Was William Yau Zhen Zhong abducted and killed or did he die after a tragic misadventure? That's the question on the minds of investigators following the recovery of the six-year-old's decomposed body near Kampung Sungai Sireh. Police are actively looking for clues into the case and re-examining all angles to find out how he died and how his body ended up near a jetty in Port Klang. Among the theories are that his body floated about 30km down the Klang river from Kampung Bukit Lanchong after being thrown into it. There is also speculation that the boy could have wandered off, fallen into a monsoon drain and ended up in the river. However, there are no such uncovered drains where he was reported missing and the closest link to the river is about two kilometres away. Although William's parents Yau Kok Kang, 32, and Goh Ying Ying, 26, identified his body based on the shorts and underpants he was wearing and scars on his head, police are still awaiting DNA test results, due to be released on Monday, to be 100 per cent sure. "Post-mortem results could not determine the cause of death because the remains were too badly decomposed," Subang Jaya OCPD Asst Comm Yahaya Ramli (pic) said. "But we have established that he had been dead for about a week, based on the level of decomposition," he said at the Subang Jaya police headquarters yesterday. ACP Yahaya said there was no sign of external injuries except for some bite marks, believed to be inflicted by animals. He said police had not ruled out foul play and were looking at the likelihood that the boy was dumped into the river. "But it is still too early to conclude what happened to him," he said. "We are going to interview the boy's older brother again and are appealing for witnesses who had seen him to come forward. In short, we are exploring all angles," he added. ACP Yahaya said police would comb the area where he disappeared in Putra Heights, the banks of the Klang river at Kampung Bukit Lanchong as well as the jetty. Police have also recorded statements from the fishermen who discovered the body.
  16. A body was found in a car that caught fire after it rammed into a concrete barrier at a junction along Upper Bukit Timah Road earlier this morning (Jan 20). In response to a query from STOMP, the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said that they found the body in the driver's seat after putting out the fire at the front of the vehicle. A spokesperson for the SCDF said: "The SCDF received a call of a car fire at the junction of Hillview Road and Upper Bukit Timah Road at 5.15am. "One fire engine, one Red Rhino and one ambulance were deployed. "Upon arrival, the SCDF found the fire well-alight at the front of the vehicle, and extinguished it within one minute. "A body was found in the driver's seat. "The cause of the fire is still under investigation. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/stomp/sg...ukit_timah.html

  19. In Myanmar, no less: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-22...ngle-grave.html Many of the preserved/restored WW2 warbirds were recovered from dirty little wars on the sidelines of the big Cold War, fought with ex-WW2 equipment such as the Football War, fought between El Salvador and Honduras, French Indochina, as well as expeditions to Indonesia, the artic, etc. And check out this video on efforts to recover an intact B-29 from Greenland (it went wrong): I wonder if there's any crashed WW2 aircraft in the jungles of Singapore or Pulau Tekong/Ubin? There was air combat over Singapore fought by Buffaloes, Hurricanes against the Japanese Nicks and Oscars, etc, but later on in 1944/45, B-29 Superfortresses bombed the naval base as part of efforts to hassle the Japanese fleet: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombing_of_Si...944–1945)

  24. The body found near the foot of one of the three towers at Marina Bay Sands (MBS) on Wednesday night is believed to be that of a 33-year-old Indonesian man. Discovered at about 9pm in the outdoor area of a restaurant in the integrated resort , he is believed to have fallen from as high as the 52nd storey of MBS tower two. It is said that his body had broken into several parts due to the force of the fall and the curved exterior of the building, making it hard for first responders to the scene to determine the gender of the body. Parts of his body were also apparently found from the 18th floor down and his legs were recovered about 10m apart on the ground level.
