  5. In June 2006, Koua Fong Lee was driving his pregnant wife and other family members home from church when he says his 1996 Toyota Camry accelerated on its own and the brakes stopped working. Lee struck another vehicle, killing three people in that car. A Minnesota jury convicted Lee of vehicular homicide and the native of Laos was sentenced to an eight-year prison sentence even though there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs involved in the incident. Fast-forward to over three years later, and Toyota's recall woes for unintended acceleration are casting doubt on the jury's decision to convict Lee. But while the 1996 Camry isn't involved in the current recall, some 1996 models were recalled for unintended acceleration. Further, ABC News says that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received at least 17 other complaints of unintended acceleration in 1996 Camrys with comments like "couldn't stop" and "had to crash into a tree and another car to stop." Brent Schafer, the lawyer for Lee, has asked for a new trial, and for his client to be set free until the time of a new hearing. The prosecution in the case told ABC News that it supports examining the 1996 Camry involved in the crash to determine if the car is at fault instead of Lee. For its part, Toyota has chosen not to comment to ABC News due to the fact that there could be a future lawsuit brought against the company.

  7. Guys, Saw this sign earlier (and many similar ones peppered around the place), off at a open air carpark near the Bukit Timah food centre & Market. There are white lots and red lots ( with the usual warnings on the road). Interestingly, many cars waited / parked at the white lots despite many available red lots. Thus i conclude that they are not season holders.and they didnt put any parking coupons. poor english or bo chup ? and for the record, i did put my parking dues. mice

  15. There hasn't been any write up on travel to this lesser known area in Indonesia. In fact, only when I was invited to visit my friend's hometown of Semarang, then did I googled about it. The invite came just as Singapore was enveloped in haze last month & was informed by my friend that his hometown is free of it. I brought a box of face masks just in case
  16. Arrrrrrrrrrr.......................... we have a IVU (In Vehicle Unit) installed in our cars for ERP. Now a IHU (In Human Unit) device to carry for those frequent trains & buses commuters... CNA : LTA looking to develop hands-free payment on buses, trains SINGAPORE: Commuters are now a step closer to being able to board a bus or take the train without having to fumble for their fare cards, after the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on Thursday (Nov 18) called a Request for Information (RFI) exercise seeking the industry’s views on a “hands free” Automatic Fare Collection (AFC) system. LTA said it will use the information gathered from the exercise to develop requirements for a proof-of-concept trial by the end of next year. Based on the RFI document seen by TODAY, the LTA is considering two concepts: Walk In Walk Out which allows the presence of the commuter to be detected at the entry and exit of the system, or Be In Be Out where the presence of the commuter is tracked throughout the system to determine the fare that he has to pay. The start of the RFI exercise came about three months after LTA launched a trial - in partnership with Singtel, Sony, EZ-Link, NETS and TransitLink - where 200 participants will use a smartband encoded with a digital CEPAS card to pay for their bus and rail journey by holding their wrists to the fare card readers. Both the trial and the RFI exercise will end on Feb 29. The RFI document stated that the envisaged system will use a medium “such as a contactless media, mobile smart phone or similar device to track commuters’ movement through the rail and bus transit system”. It said the rail transit system will be gated with its barriers in “normally open state “. These will close when “an invalid or no-ticketing intrusion” is detected. On buses, alerts will be sent to the bus driver when such instances occur. Commuters TODAY spoke to welcomed the idea. Public relations associate Angeline Wong, 24, recounted how there were times when she had to miss the train because she could not get her fare card out of her bag in time. Ms Crystal Huang, a 56-year-old human resource executive, however, pointed out that the “hands free” system might result in some inconvenience. “Now I can see how much money (is left) in my EZ-Link card, but with this system, does it mean that I always have to check the stored value at the control station?,” she said. Other commuters wondered if the system could deduct money from multiple smart cards or devices which a person is carrying. “Will I be paying twice for a trip if I have my ATM card and EZ-Link card with me?” said Ms Hui Shan, a 23-year-old research assistant. Dr Walter Theseira, a senior lecturer at SIM University (UniSIM), said that a “hands free” system would be ideal for Singapore as the vast majority of commuters already pay for their trips using contactless cards. Otherwise, there will be a bottleneck at the entrance of buses with some commuters trying to pay by cash. “It’s a natural progression from the current system,” he said. Agreeing, UniSIM adjunct associate professor Park Byung-joon said the system will help to smoothen the process of boarding during the peak hours. Still, he felt it was not a development that would excite commuters. “I don’t think this is a major breakthrough to make commuters happy,” he said. Link : http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/lta-looking-to-develop/2274310.html If this carry-on IHU device have GPS capabilities, now the authority can say : "You Can Run But You Can't Hide" ... Hmmmm....... not a bad ideal, got public toilets, no need to dig for coins....

  25. advert for a house in Indonesia has gone viral online after the woman selling it offered to throw in an unusual extra feature for free -- her hand in marriage. The Internet ad reads for the most part like a regular house listing, saying that the single-storey property has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a parking space and a fish pond. But it also proposes to buyers a "rare offer" -- "when you buy this house, you can ask the owner to marry you", alongside a picture of Wina Lia, a 40-year-old widow and beauty salon owner, leaning against a car in front of the house. The ad said that terms and conditions apply, and notes the offer is "for serious buyers and non-negotiable". The house in Sleman, on the island of Java, is on the market for 999 million rupiah (about $75,000). News of the offer quickly spread among Internet users in social media-crazy Indonesia. Boldies99, a user on popular online forum Kaskus, said Lia was "quite smart -- even though the house will be sold, she will remain the owner." Lia told AFP she was "shocked at the reaction", as she had been overwhelmed by journalists coming to interview her, and even the police in the conservative, Muslim-majority country had been asking questions. The police "came to verify the news as they consider it as an improper advertisement. But I explained to them that it was not my idea," she said. The mother of two explained that she had asked a friend who was a property agent to help her find a buyer -- and in the process a husband -- but she had expected him to pass on the news to a limited number of people, not put an ad online. "I told a friend of mine who also works as property agent that if there is a buyer who is a single man or a widower who wants to buy a house, and at the same time look for a wife, he can let me know as I'm also a widow," she said. She added that there was only one potential buyer, who had visited on Wednesday, but refused to give further details.
