  10. interesting... Singapore most complaint car brand? Volkswagen still bugged by consumer complaints Christopher TanThe Straits TimesMonday, May 25, 2015 20150525_ST_volks.jpg 1 0 0 0 0 Print VOLKSWAGEN (VW) continues to have the dubious honour of hogging the pole position when it comes to customer complaints. Data from the consumer watchdog, Consumers Association of Singapore (Case), showed that the German brand garnered 12 new-car complaints from customers from January last year to the first four months of this year. The figure was more than double that of complaints made against BMW and Mercedes-Benz, which shared the second spot. The two brands had five complaints each for the same period. Comparing complaints measured as a ratio against new cars each of the three brands sold, VW's performance was even bleaker. It had 3.41 complaints for every 1,000 cars sold, versus 1.2 for BMW and 0.76 for Mercedes-Benz. VW fared worse than its previous record. Between January 2013 and April last year, it had 11 complaints, earning it the top spot on Case's list. The Straits Times understands most of the complaints pertain to glitchy gearboxes. Civil engineer Uttar Kumar, 52, who bought a VW Passat 1.4 in December 2012, was among those who filed a Case complaint this year. He said he did so after Volkswagen Singapore failed to resolve problems with the car's gearbox despite numerous attempts. He said he noticed the car made abnormal noises on the first day. The noises grew louder and the car became jerky. "It was in the workshop almost every two to three weeks," Mr Kumar recalled. The car, he said, is still not satisfactory, despite its clutch, a component of the gearbox that is used in changing gears, having been replaced in 2013. "It's still not smooth, it shakes when it starts, there is power loss and sometimes there is a grinding noise," he said. Volkswagen Singapore spokesman James Page dismissed claims that its cars were defective. For instance, he said two of the three complaints filed with Case in the first four months of this year were unfounded. "There was absolutely nothing wrong with the cars," he said. "The customers involved perceived there to be some faults, and requested a warranty extension and a car replacement respectively. We could not accede to their requests and they lodged complaints with Case." In the third case, the customer did have some genuine issues with his car, he said, and repairs were covered under the car's warranty. Volkswagen Singapore also extended the warranty by one year. "Nonetheless, he still made a complaint to Case," he said. Checks with independent service quality firm JD Power revealed that VW's ranking in other markets has not been sterling, either. In the United States, JD Power's 2015 Vehicle Dependability Study found VW had 165 problems per 100 cars - more than the industry average of 147. In Malaysia, the brand ranked last in the firm's 2014 Customer Service Index. Even in its home market Germany, VW ranked above average - but below brands such as Toyota, Mitsubishi and Skoda - in the 2014 Vehicle Ownership Satisfaction Study. 11. In Singapore driving context what is your choice of auto-transmission? CVT or DCT/DSG or AT(torque converter). For those who are lucky enough to have driven all three types, what are the pluses, minuses or quirks of these transmissions when applied to driving on Singapore roads and conditions. For noob like me who only has driven AT only, it would really give a good insight. (ok...I know I can google the different types but I just like to hear opinions those who really use them on our roads) Thanks for input.
  12. As above. ATF been changed out last month. Especially cold engine, will feel it even more, after a while sometime have sometime don't have.
  13. just a curious question, will over usage of the +/- gear leads to an early failure of the gearbox as compared to using fully auto?
  14. My 2005 Mitsubishi Grandis had gearbox problems and was confirmed by X431 Diag Report (code 001: 44 4th not syncromesh and code 002: 42, 2nd not syncromesh). At slow speed especially in morning difficult to drive due jerks, but once speed picks up seems to be ok. But I guess it is not safe to drive. The car has 10 more months to go before COE expires. Do you all have any suggestions - to repair or scrap? How to maximize returns at this point? Thank you.
  15. I read that VW gearbox issues are due to the additives in synthetic transmission oil that causes malfunction in the electronics in hot and humid climate. This explains why such a large number of GB failures in Asia and not in Europe. The solution is to change from SYNTHETIC to MINERAL. Does this apply to other car makers gearboxes where synthetics are used ? What about engine oil then ?
  16. getting paranoid about less than smooth gear changes on my six year old honda. drove down to Khang's auto transmission at Sin Ming but it was closed... now a bus park ... and a car wash. Did the $6 snow wash, and was told by the folks there that Khang's closed end of 2011. Anyone know if they closed or shifted? Where else can I get my auto trans inspected and maintained - prefer a specialist so that they can be specific about the specific recommendations, and not just a blanket "overhaul".
  17. Hi bros, I'm driving a 2007 Nissan Latio Premium. I would like to know how much would it cost to change the CVT gearbox oil? And what mileage is recommend for the change? Thanks in advance.
  18. just wanna find out if it is a common thing to experience the "gong" sound when engaging 'D' from park ? i just thought this would shorten the gears lifespan. is there a better way to prevent this from happening? http://youtu.be/JeM6gRP-BDI
  19. Good Day All, would like to know if the engine from the same make and model, but different drive are the same and able to inter swap? i'm looking to import a scarp car to replace all my car's wear and tear, however, its a left hand drive unit, i only need the gearbox, and some engine parts of it. please to hear all advises. cheers!
  20. Hi Bros need advise on the following : Friend's dad got a Sunny Ex-saloon with gearbox problem. when driving 1/2 way sometimes the gear will be stuck at 1st gear resulting in low speed plus high RPM, need to switch off the car then start again then it will be ok. But after driving for sometime it will persist again. checked with WS they said that need to overhaul the gearbox, and they says that Sunny not able to replace the clutch as it comes in a complete module. is it true? ( i suspect just the clutch plates need to be changed. by the way its a Auto Gear) any one facing the same problem and able to advise?? thanks in advance.
  21. A British engineering company, Xtrac, specialists of high performance and race car grade transmissions, have designed a hybridised automated manual transmission (H-AMT; designated code 1010). This particular transmission design allows future luxury and performance cars to meet the 95g/km CO2 emission requirements that will be introduced by European legislators in 2020. The crucial technical part of the transmission system is the integrated electric motor. The electric motor enables the vehicle to travel at speeds of up to 152km/h on electric power alone after which; engine power kicks in. The transmission is said to be able to handle torque figures from 800Nm to 1000Nm, depending on vehicle gross weight and application. The above mentioned speed range allows torque infill up to the fourth gear during heavy acceleration and in all gears, up to the threshold speed, during low speed driving; when it is considered desirable to keep the engine revs low which will improve vehicle efficiency. The term 'torque infill' - refers to the application of additional torque from the transmission to the road wheels during the period of a gear change. In a conventional transmission system, torque is interrupted to allow the shift to complete. The ability to provide torque to the road wheels, independent of the engine, reduces the energy absorbed by the main drive clutch during the vehicle launch pull-away condition which can lead to clutch downsizing and also reduction in drive plate and flywheel inertia. This is seen as an additional benefit in hybridising an automated manual transmission. The Xtrac 1010 H-AMT is designed as an alternative to heavier and more complex dual clutch transmissions. It has lesser parts and lighter in overall weight and also offer increased functionality over single electric motor hybrid systems. Although dual clutch gearboxes do not suffer from power interruptions either, the company stresses that its products are less complex, lighter and are more efficient than DCTs. The seven speed transmission offers multiple modes of internal combustion engine and electric motor operation and with an overall ratio spread of 6:1, which is higher than most other transmissions in the market today. 22. Hi guys, my auto gearbox tends to jerk during gear shifts. It is very obvious when moving off after cold start, especially for down-shifting. After engine warms up, it gets alot smoother. What could be wrong? I just serviced my car last month, and workshop did not say anything is wrong. Then again, I did not specifically ask them to check the gearbox.
  23. Although GM and Ford are rivals in the automotive industry, these American car makers are collaborating to develop 9 to 10-speed automatic transmissions. This is not the first of their partnership though. In 2002, they cooperated to create a new automatic transaxle, designed for transverse engine applications in cars and light trucks. According to reports, GM will be in charge of designing a 9-speed gearbox for front-wheel drive cars while Ford will take the lead in developing a 10-speed transmission for rear-wheel drive cars such as SUVs, performance vehicles and pick-ups. Cars with a larger number of gear selections enable the engine to operate more efficiently, thus reducing CO2 emissions and fuel consumption. GM and Ford are not alone in the quest for additional gear ratios. Hyundai is already working on a 10-speed automatic transmission that will be used on a range of Hyundai and Kia vehicles in the future, particularly luxury models. It is scheduled to hit the showroom in 2014. If the collaboration proves to be a success, GM and Ford, the world's second and fifth largest car maker respectively, will be able to enjoy great economy of scale due to the sheer volume of their annual output. According to IHS Automotive powertrain analyst, David Petrovski, GM and Ford benefit from reduced investment risk by working together. By developing their own gearbox instead of purchasing them from manufacturers such as ZF and paying license fees, a car maker can reduce their cost of production.
