New 2019 Volkswagen T-Cross joins brand’s SUV range https://www.autoexpress.co.uk/volkswagen/t-cross/94502/new-2019-volkswagen-t-cross-joins-brand-s-suv-range The all-new VW T-Cross SUV sits below the larger T-Roc, rivalling the SEAT Arona and Kia Stonic This is the all-new Volkswagen T-Cross, the latest and smallest SUV from the German brand. It’s a rival for the likes of the Nissan Juke, Citroen C3 Aircross and SEAT Arona and due to go on sale in the UK early next year priced from around £16,500. It sits beneath the T-Roc in Volkswagen’s lineup and shares a lot of its mechanical running gear with the Polo supermini. It’s based on the same MQB A0 platform and measures in at 4,107mm long and 1,558mm tall, which makes it 54mm longer and 97mm wider than the Polo. Drivers also sit 100mm higher in the T-Cross than they would in the hatchback. • New Volkswagen T-Cross prototype review In the flesh its chunky wheel arches, boxy profile and tall bonnet give the T-Cross a more prominent SUV look than any of its rivals. On paper, at least, it’s also more practical; the 385-litre boot – larger than a VW Golf’s – can expand to 455 litres with the rear bench slid forward, while dropping the bench completely frees up 1,281 litres of luggage space. “The T-Cross is about versatility – that’s its number one focus,” Felix Kaschutzke, T-Cross project for manager sales & marketing, told Auto Express. “This car is built for young, small families, the car is very versatile for these types of customers.” To keep costs down, four-wheel drive will not be offered; all T-Cross models will be front-wheel drive. In the UK, buyers will get the option of a 94bhp or 113bhp 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. Both use a six-speed manual as standard, while a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is available as an option. While a 1.6-litre TDI engine is available to buyers on the continent, Volkswagen UK has decided against selling it over here due to the market’s shift way from diesel-powered cars. However, it could be offered later down the line if there is demand – along with the possibility of mild-hybrid technology, too. • Best small SUVs and crossovers on sale Inside, the overall design is recognisable from the Polo; a central touchscreen on the dashboard gives access to all of the car’s functions and is offered in two sizes: 6.5 and 8.0 inches. VW’s digital instrument cluster, called Active Info Display, is also available and will be standard on higher-spec models. VW’s usual array of specs will make up the range in the UK, starting with entry-level S models and moving up through SE, SEL and R-Line trims. As standard all models will feature alloy wheels (sizes range from 16 -18 inches), blind spot monitoring, Bluetooth, air-con and four USB charging ports. Options include wireless phone charging, adaptive cruise control, keyless go and a sunroof. VW is one of the last big car makers to add a compact SUV to its model range. Asked why it had taken so long for the German firm to develop the T-Cross, Kaschutzke cited production constraints and wanting to get the model set-up exactly how customers expect it to be: “It’s clear we are late with this car,” he said. “But this something we have done before. Usually we are not the first in the segment but we are usually the best,” Kaschutzke explained. “What we made sure with the T-Cross is to make it a true SUV, with SUV characteristics such as the seating position and versatility, this is the number one priority we have with the car,” he added. “This is the difference between this car and other competitors – we are doing it differently.”

Say hello to this stunner? We’ve known for some time now that Volkswagen has been hard at work on an all-new North American market Passat. The current generation, built in Chattanooga, Tennessee, has been on sale since 2011. Compared to its immediate predecessor, the outgoing Passat is, in a word, bland, styling wise. It’s not that it was a bad car but it was very conservatively styled inside out. What’s more, it was designed and built specifically for North America while Europe received a more stylish and premium Passat. That won’t be the case for much longer. Thanks to VW Vortex, we’re getting our first look at the newly revealed Chinese market Passat and the car you’re looking at is said to very much resemble what’s about to debut for the US. Without question there’s lots of Arteon design influences throughout, especially up front and from a side profile. Despite having the familiar three-box sedan design, this new Passat is sleeker and unquestionably sexier than today’s car. Despite the sloped roofline, there’s still a traditional trunk as opposed to a liftback design. It’s also bigger than the Euro-spec Passat. For example, it’s about 3 inches longer and has roomier rear seat. Speaking of which, note the quilted leather and fancy glass bottles in the center armrest cupholders. The cupholders will surely be on the US market version, but we’re not so sure about the upgraded upholstery rear seats. Remember, it’s very fashionable in China for owners to be chauffeured around town by a hired driver, hence the need for VW to upgrade the rear seats. It doesn’t work like that in America. The new Passat will ride on VW’s MQB platform which also underpins the likes of the Arteon, Atlas, Jetta, and Europe’s Passat. Under the hood, there’s a good chance the VW will make further use of the same turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-four with 268 hp found in the Arteon. It’s paired to an eight-speed automatic sending power to either the front or all four wheels. The Arteon’s US launch was recently delayed and isn’t expected to go on sale until early next year. The all-new Passat, however, will likely debut at either Los Angeles in late November or at Detroit in mid-January.

The carmaker is suspected of having manipulated more cars than hitherto acknowledged. Munich prosecutors and police officers from the southern German states of Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg on Tuesday searched a number of Audi offices in Ingolstadt, as well as the carmaker's production facility in Neckarsulm, the Süddeutsche Zeitung daily reported. It said a total of 18 prosecutors and an unspecified number of police participated in the raids. Audi, one of Volkswagen's 12 brands, confirmed the searches, saying it was fully cooperating with the prosecutors. The report said the raids were carried out because Audi was believed to have manipulated the emissions levels in more than 200,000 cars for both the European and US markets. Audi stands accused of switching off software that controls waste gas purification systems while the cars were on the road. Large-scale manipulation By contrast, the software was switched on when cars were tested in the lab. The first raids on Audi took place in March 2017 when prosecutors looked into allegations that the company had rigged emissions levels in 80,000 cars for the US market. Its parent company, Volkswagen, had admitted that Audi had participated in cheating efforts. Prior to Tuesday's raids, prosecutors had searched the homes of six current or former Audi engineers responsible for engine technology.

The mummified body of a German adventurer has been discovered on his abandoned yacht - which silently drifted around the world for years. Manfred Fritz Bajorat, 59, was found by two fishermen at the weekend off the coast of the Philippines. His body was discovered near the radio telephone on the 40ft yacht called Sayo, as if he was trying one last desperate mayday call. It is not clear how long he had been dead and for how many years his yacht had been drifting, but no reported sightings of him have been mentioned since 2009. Inside the cabin were found photo albums, clothes and tins of food strewn all over the interior. He was floating nearly 40 miles from the coast of the Philippines in the Pacific Ocean when the fishermen spotted the drifting vessel and boarded it. The mast was broken and much of the cabin was underwater, but what killed the skipper is unclear. Dry ocean winds, hot temperatures and the salty air helped preserve his body. He was identified by paperwork found on the vessel. It is unclear how long he has been dead. Police are trying to retrace his last voyages and find the last people to speak with him. He broke up with his wife in 2008, who had been on his travels with him, and she later died from cancer. In 2009 in Mallorca he met another world sailer called Dieter who told Germany's BILD newspaper: "He was a very experienced sailor. I don't believe he would have sailed into a storm. "I believe the mast broke after Manfred was already dead." His body was taken for an autopsy in Butuan City, the yacht was towed for a police inspection into the port of Barobo. Police spokeswoman Goldie Lou Siega in the Philippines said; "We have no evidence of a second person aboard and no weapon was found on the yacht." Dr Mark Benecke, a forensic criminologist in the city of Cologne, told BILD: "The way he is sitting seems to indicate that death was unexpected, perhaps from a heart attack." The German embassy in Manila is working with local officials to trace his family in Germany. If you have not heard of this German brand, you are not alone. But if you make a quick search on the web, once Germany's third-largest car maker, does have some iconic model half a decade back. The German car maker unveiled its first model for 54 years, the BX7 SUV, at the recent Frankfurt Auto Show. The company, which is based in Stuttgart and backed by Chinese commercial-vehicle manufacturer, Beiqi Foton, tragets sales of more than 500,000nautos in the "medium terms", COE Ulrich Walker said in an interview. The company plans to launch sales with the midsize SUV, before adding 2 smaller SUVs, a sedan and a van.

Carbon emissions - superiority of German technology

While browsing sgcarmart and checking out vehicles specifications, something caught my eye - carbon emissions. With the new CEVS kicking in from July, cars with 'high' emissions can be taxed additional $30k! But what is interesting is how the German vehicles have much lesser emissions than comparative Japanese cars. Examples below. Specifications from sgcarmart. Toyota corolla 1.6(A) - CO2 emission 151 g/km (As tested by LTA) / Kerb weight 1,265 kg Mercedes Benz E200 - CO2 emission 146 g/km (As tested by LTA) / Kerb weight 1,655 kg Numbers speak for themselves. Need a premium hatch with good driving dynamics? Chances are you would have bought a BMW 1 Series F20/F21 hatchback. But chances are you also wish it could have a prettier face. Fret not, German aftermarket specialist, Individual Cars Consulting GmbH & Co. KG, has come up with a conversion package that will allow you to swap the 1 Series’s face with the new 2 Series coupe’s face. Costing less than 3,000€ (S$5,222), only the headlights, the front apron including the kidney grille and some other smaller parts under the bonnet need to be replaced for the conversion. Check out their completed demo car which is actually a M135i 3-door hatchback. Even the basic model without the M Sport bumpers looks good!

The contract includes a logistics package and the training of Singaporean crew in Germany. The new vessels, together with two second-hand Archer-class submarines, will replace four ageing Challenger-class submarines. Mindef said that the Challenger-class vessels, which were built in the 1960s, will be progressively retired from service. The new vessels are expected to be delivered from 2020. The decision to buy the new German-made submarines follows Defence Minister Ng Hen's comments in March about Mindef's plan to replace the Challenge submarines with new ones.

Automotive breeds are diversifying at an increasing pace. But that did not seem to affect hatchbacks, which has gained a large fan base over the years (especially the hotter, souped up variants). Besides warming up to their chic, youthful image, people like them for their practicality and the ease of driving (and parking) one. Both the A3 and 116i are some of the easiest ways to gain entry into the respective marques (Audi and BMW). But of course, in the local climate, each of these hatchbacks will still cost upwards of $180k. The A3 is the newer entrant to the segment, and naturally look fresher of the duo. Audi has once again worked its wizardry, with help from the LED lamps, to create a facet that is distinctive and appealing to the senses. The 1 Series' styling may have raised a few brows when it first set foot on our grounds. But the recent facelift has pulled off an aggressive and sporty stance. We, especially, like how it looks from the rump. Audi's 1.4-litre chunk on the A3 puts out 122bhp and 200Nm of torque. Mated to a dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox, the drive is decidedly smooth. The bimmer's 1.6-litre, in comparison, edges out with better power figures - 136bhp and 220Nm of torque to be exact. Although the 116i utilises a more 'conventional' eight-speed gearbox with single-clutch setup, cog swops never felt lacking. Instead, we genuinely like how intuitive it felt on the sprints and in overtaking manoeuvres. Next, the interior. BMW's cabin is a no-frills example of how a premium interior should be like. Though we have to give it to the A3 for its simplistic, almost minimalist cabin, which looks and feel more modern than the 116's. Meanwhile, browse through the rest of the pictures and decide for yourself who is the winner of this duo.

According to a study done early this year, German-made cars were not as reliable as many believed them to be. Warranty Direct, a U.K. provider of direct consumer warranties has studied its claims data to compile a list of the manufacturers with the most reliable engines - and Audi, BMW and Volkswagen all finished in the bottom 10 out of a total 36 makers. In fact, the only firm whose cars had a worse engine failure rate than Audi was MG Rover. The other Germans, BMW and Volkswagen came in at seventh and ninth from bottom respectively. At the other end of the table, Honda scooped the gold medal - the study found that just one in every 344 Honda engines failed, compared to one in every 27 Audi engines. Fellow Japanese rival Toyota came in second while Mercedes managed to outperform its fellow German brands with a respectable third-place finish. If you live in China (or plan to go there in the near future) and you have extra amount of money to spend, you may want to consider buying yourself a luxury coupe from German automaker BMW. Introduced for the first time back at this year's Detroit Motor Show, BMW is planning to start selling the M6 Gran Coupe in a wide range of countries, including China where the model has already made its debut. Let me remind you, to me, the BMW M6 Gran Coupe is nothing less than a very luxurious four-door coupe that will not hesitate to take you to the century sprint in only 4.2 seconds. Under its hood, the coupe packs a 4.4-litre twin-turbo engine which has the capability of delivering the power of no less than 560 horses in addition to 680Nm of torque in total. In order to sell the model in the origin country of pandas, the German automaker has teamed up with Brilliance, a local company, and they both have planned big things for the said coupe. Well, last but not least, as far as the price tag is concerned, BMW is demanding 2,390,000 yuan (around S$493,000) in exchange for a M6 Gran Coupe. Well, are you interested?

Ferrari 458 Italia kills man and crashes into another car!

Not so long ago, I tried to remind you to keep away from a country such as Russia. Thing is, the people - well mostly - seem really reckless there, especially while driving. It isn't that hard at all to find videos to prove this theory. Now, another incident - a tragic one too - has taken place in which I believe quite a number of people wonder how the country actually functions. While it may seem just like another car crash, this one is a lot more awful. In the video, we can see a Ferrari 458 Italia rear ending a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Judging from the fact that the rear bumper of the Mercedes was entirely ripped apart, I believe you have a good idea regarding the speed the Ferrari driver must have been driving at the moment. Amazingly, though, neither the Ferrari driver nor the Mercedes driver got seriously hurt. Yet, what was really tragic was the fact that the Italian supercar had actually knocked over a pedestrian, Nariman Gaynulov, 62, before crashing into the said Mercedes. As it turned out, the man driving the Ferrari 458 Italia is Larion Vuokila, 23, son of Alexander Zajonc, a Russian billionaire. Despite not getting seriously hurt, Vuokila was taken to the hospital soon after the incident. However, he tried to escape but has now been arrested by the police. I am not really sure what actually happened to Vuokila seconds before the crash. Was it that he tried to beat the red light? Or, was the crash triggered by Vuokila losing control of his supercar? Here's one piece of advice I'm sharing with you again, if you own a convertible with a soft top, please refrain from parking it somewhere without any surveillance. Well, it's for your own safety. You see, you might end up being one unfortunate owner whose car roof got slashed. Yes, it happened! The Audi R8 GT Spyder you are about to see in the video no longer has its proper soft top as it used to. It seems that maybe, someone envies the owner of the car for being able to afford such an expensive car while he/she can't. However, it was very unfortunate for the owner as the Audi R8 GT Spyder is the most exclusive R8 in store, there're only 333 examples of it, you know. With that being said, whoever is capable of affording such a car must have an exclusive sense of joy and pride. With the roof slashed now, it seems that there'll no longer be such a sense, or will there? Well, the owner of the car takes things easy, it seems. To fix the slashed roof of his super car, the owner simply counts on tapes and a plastic garbage bag! It seems that all that matters to the owner is that water won't pour into the car when it rains. -
VW introduces 'Side Assist' technology in a rather strange way

If driving a car is one of your daily routines, I suppose that you know how it feels to be surprised by a vehicle that just comes out of nowhere every now and then. The vehicle seems to have come out of nowhere because each and every single car out there has a blind spot. In fact, due to the blind spot, automakers are now equipping their cars with technologies that can help drivers with the blind spot issue. One automaker to do this is Volkswagen (VW). The German automaker is now equipping its cars with what it calls 'Side Assist' technology. Taking advantage of two rear radars, this technology is capable of scanning the areas behind the car for as far as 50 metres and also in the blind spots at the sides of the car. This technology will light an indicator at the side mirrors when a vehicle is in the blind spot. So, if there's a vehicle in the blind spot of the left side, VW's side assist technology will light the indicator at the left side mirror. To introduce its side assist feature, Volkswagen has come up with something that may turn out quite strange, or somehow amusing. The German automaker creates a video advertisement showing a man cleaning himself up in front of the mirror when, all of a sudden, a rather chunky, bearded man stares at him from behind the back. Afterwards, a message is displayed saying, "Beware of the biker that comes from nowhere." -
Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. Today, we're gathered here to watch a lesson carefully by Audi regarding the magic hidden atop the powerful engine of our cars. Right, it's the bonnet and it's very kind of Audi to teach us how to open it! Well, as a matter of fact, the German automaker is even more kind to also teach us how to close the bonnet again properly. This is to enable us to keep our cars in excellent condition, at least that's what the company claims. Well, it seems that we can go through an awful lot of pages just to figure out the proper ways of opening and closing the bonnet but no, don't worry, we aren't going to do that. However, I have to admit that sometimes automakers place bonnet releasing switches at pretty strange and unexpected places, especially when it comes to super cars. Thanks to that, some drivers end up making a fool of themselves for not knowing where to find the right switch for popping up the hood, especially when their car is still brand new. Well, for now, I guess we're better off watching this video carefully, especially if any of us owns an Audi and let's not make a fool of ourselves as well, shall we?

In 2011, Audi presented the Quattro Concept, the final production version of which has yet to come. But now, it seems that the German automaker is finally ready to take the wraps off the final production version when the 1984 Audi Sport Quattro celebrates its 30th anniversary. Rumour has it that the final version will look sportier as well as sharper than the Quattro Concept. It's also said that the final version of the car will carry a twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 engine. Capable of producing a total power output of 650bhp, the car will seemingly take only 3.4 seconds to go from 0-100km/h. The Quattro Concept, however, had to count on a turbocharged 2.5-litre five-cylinder engine with a total power output of 408bhp. In addition to a powerful V8 engine, the successor to the Audi Sport Quattro will also feature a sports tuned suspension with adaptive dampers, a sports Quattro rear differential, and carbon-ceramic brakes. To keep things light, Audi will be using such components as aluminium, magnesium, and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). In total, the car won't weigh over 1,300kg. If you are keen on seeing the car with your very own eyes, you may want to anticipate the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show as the German automaker is likely to show it there. BMW's Intelligent Headlamps, now keeping more people safer

Do you often drive when nighttime falls? Well, my father, for one, quite so often does just that. And, if you do so, too, chances are you often find yourselves kind of blinded by the illumination of cars which are coming from the opposite lane. That's not to mention that there's a great number of cars that utilise Xenon bulbs these days, blinding you even more. However, the frequency of you getting blinded by oncoming traffic is about to decrease, thanks to the so-called 'Intelligent Headlamps' feature. This is an illumination technology that comes from highly reputable German automaker BMW. To be honest, this technology isn't entirely new as it was first introduced back in July last year. Back then, it was introduced exclusively for the BMW 7 Series. Don't get me wrong, it wasn't standard even on the really expensive models from BMW. Instead, customers who desired to have the feature available on their BMW 7 Series would have to purchase the optional Adaptive LED Headlamps package. Nevertheless, probably realising how its technology may actually decrease traffic accidents significantly, ultimately leading to saving a whole lot more people, the luxury German car manufacturer is now offering the technology on the company's new 3 Series Saloon and Touring lineups as well. You'll only have to make sure that the models do have a Visibility package available on them. So, what this feature does is it detects the situations of the road and traffic ahead and then adjusts the lighting that comes from the headlamps of BMW cars accordingly. This way, it prevents the lighting from blinding drivers from the oncoming lane. Not only will it prevent drivers on the oncoming lane from being blinded, it won't emit much glare to the driver ahead of you, either. 15th May 2013 was the world premiere of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Mercedes unveiled its new luxury sedan at the Airbus A380 Delivery Centre located in Hamburg, Germany. However, what attracts me besides the debut of the luxury German sedan itself is the odds that the German automaker is set to launch the coupe version soon. On its official Facebook page, Mercedes Germany has released a sketch of its new model. To me, the sketch looks like the 2014 S-Class coupe, well, although Mercedes-Benz didn't necessarily mention the term 'coupe', and the new model seems kind of wider than the previous generation Mercedes-Benz S-Class coupe. Furthermore, it's known that the 2014 S-Class will also come in a convertible and coupe version. In addition to that, no matter how I look at it, the styling cues portrayed in the sketch don't seem to match those of the actual sedan being launched at the home country of Mercedes-Benz today. So, in short, I think it's safe to say that we should be getting ready to behold the launch of the 2014 Mercedes-Benz S-Class Coupe which will seemingly take place in the near future. Otherwise, I don't think the German automaker will be revealing the design of its new model in such detail.

The ever popular movie 'The Fast and the Furious' is about to come to its 6th installment. As a matter of fact, you'll be witnessing 'Fast and Furious 6' on the silver screen worldwide starting May 24th. As always, we've got used to sports, exotic, and tuned cars in the series. However, we've never got to see a BMW M5 in them in spite of what the car has to offer. With that being said, it's about time the model makes its debut. So, in this 6th installment, besides other very interesting cars, there'll be around a dozen of BMW M5s. Nonetheless, don't expect to see the current model as all those 12 cars will be the V10-revving E60 model. Personally, I think the model looks attractive even when it is in a complete standstill mode, not to mention when it is involved in a highly intense full throttle action thriller. The design cues are attractive, both on the front and rear fascias, so attractive that some people in Indonesia even nicknamed it 'the eagle eye'. Unfortunately, according to 'Fast and Furious 6' Car Coordinator, Dennis McCarthy, the person in charge of setting up the cars for you to see on the big screen, most of the 'eagle eyes' had to be destroyed while filming.
