  1. [extract] Ever since the release of the Toyota variant for the Toyobaru sports car, the GT86, the company has been busy showing to the world what the latest model is capable of. Subaru recently unveiled the GT300 racing version of the BRZ cousin which will be fielded in the Japan SuperGT racing series. And now, it is Toyota

  3. [extract] If I were to ask what is the car in the picture above, you would probably have a hard time guessing. For those who could guess it, you deserve a pat on the back. For those who can't, it is actually the legendary Toyota Celica GT4 ST 185. The car was famous for dominating the World Rally Championships during the first half of the 1990s and it was also the first Japanese car to win the championship. Toyota
  4. When Dutch car collector, Frans van Haren, won an auction for a vintage 1937 Mercedes car, it was just like a dream come true. But it turned into a nightmare when it got confiscated by the local authorities in Germany where he brought it to have the car displayed at the recent Techno Classica Car Show in Essen, Germany. The car you see here is a rare (and obviously, precious) 1937 Mercedes 500 K Roadster (type W29); where only 392 were made in total including 29 units that were roadsters. Frans van Haren acquired the car in an auction last year in August. He paid an enormous amount of US$ 3.767 million dollars for it and decided to bring it to the above mentioned auto show. At the auto show, German police confiscated the car as a result of a claim by a custodian acting for the family of the car

  6. Hardly any other car model (or mini bus for this instance) has such a high cult status as the Volkswagen Bus. It has been around for over 60 years and the Type 2 model is still in production in Brazil. Volkswagen is dead serious on its heritage as they have appointed Franz-Josef Paefgen (in October last year), former chief executive of Audi, Bentley and Bugatti, to head their classics program. At Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, the Volkswagen Bus has its own department dedicated in preserving its heritage and it is known as the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer. The department was set-up in 2007 and in five years, it has expanded really fast. The team at the Oldtimer department has purchased and restored over 100 vehicles. They also do restoration for external customers, inclusive of detailed documentation of their work on the vehicles. Due to the formation of the Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles Oldtimer department, they moved to a new building in Hannover, Germany at the beginning of this year. The new facility has approximately 7000 square meters of space that houses these historic vehicles. On top of that, it also has a machine park that includes a sheet metal bending bench, lathe and milling machines and its own paint shop. The department currently has 13 employees, from mechanics to even an event planner. Owners of a historic Volkswagen vehicle can have their rides restored there and regardless whether it is a full or partial restoration, the staff there will take on any assignment. They will talk through all personal wishes with the vehicle owners before preparing any individually custom job. The unique feature of the department is the detailed documentation of any restoration work. Every comprehensive step is photographically documented and described in detail. In this manner, the work done are left for future customers, who can browse through their folders whenever they visit the place. Photo credit: Auto Blog
  7. [extract] One of the most important people in the automotive industry has left us. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche has passed away on Thursday, 05 April 2012, at age 76 in Salzburg, Austria. The cause of death was not revealed. Alexander Porsche is the grandson of Ferdinand Porsche, the man who was responsible in founding the famous sports car marque. Ferdinand Alexander Porsche is the son of Ferdinand Anton Ernst Porsche (commonly known as Ferry Porsche) and was nicknamed

  11. [extract] Back in 1994, when BMW bought the Rover Group, the acquisition included other auto names such as Triumph, Morris, Austin and Riley. Basically, these other auto brands were from the British Leyland Group and they eventually changed their name to the Rover Group in the 1980s. 1972 Triumph Spitfire Mark IV BWM sold the Rover name in 2000 but they kept the rights to the Triumph and Riley brands. Triumph was a British car and motor manufacturing company and they were known for their small sized roadsters such as the Spitfire. Recently, BMW has applied for a European trademark on the Triumph
  12. [extract] The BMW F20 1 Series was introduced in 2011 and it is a relatively new model. It comes in a variety of petrol and diesel engines but there is no performance sub-model available yet. And now, we do not have to wait any longer for one because the German automaker has released official pictures of the M135i concept which will premier at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show next month. The M135i is a concept study of a BMW M Performance automobile which will feature a six cylinder petrol engine and BMW has stated that the car is consistent with the further development of the new BMW 1 Series

  14. [extract] When Audi stopped offering the B7 platform RS4 in 2008, many thought that they would release a new version shortly after that. But in fact, we have to wait almost four years for the new version and the car you see in these pictures here is the new Audi RS4 and Audi will debut it at next month
  15. With the recent release of their MQB platform, it is expected that Volkswagen will release the next generation Golf some time in the fourth quarter of this year and Volkswagen will introduce changes to the model that is normally found in higher end models. It is rumoured that Volkswagen will debut the Mk 7 Golf at the 2012 Paris Motor Show this year (29 September to 14 October) and the car will be packed with technology that is usually associated with luxury models. The car will come in several engine variants, from the ordinary petrol engine up to a plug-in hybrid that generates around 243bhp. The normal models are powered by a new series of downsized petrol engines (code EA211) and diesel engines (code EA288). The top of the range diesel model (non GTD) will generate around 181bhp and 380Nm of torque. There is also a 220bhp twin turbocharged diesel engine that the company is still putting under some tests and this one will likely end up in the GTD sub-model. As for the petrol engines, the smallest displacement engine is a 1.4-litre turbocharged engine that generates around 138bhp and it features cylinder deactivation for increased economy. The larger engine (code EA888) sizes are at 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre. The Mk 7 Volkswagen Golf GTI gets the most radical change of all. The 2.0-litre engine will deliver around 260bhp, a 50bhp increase from the current generation. The next Golf GTI will feature the new VAQ electronically controlled front differential and Volkswagen mentioned that it will offer a more agile steering behaviour and a much greater sense of steering precision. All wheel drive and the company
  16. Early this year, Audi mentioned that the company will reveal a more powerful Audi TT at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. If you are one of those who are eager to know what Audi have for us, you can stop waiting because the German auto company has officially revealed the most powerful TT variant ahead of its debut in Geneva next month and it is known as the TT RS Plus. Audi has made the TT RS into something like a baby R8; compact and fast. Under the hood is the same 2.5 litre turbocharged engine used in the normal TT RS model but it has been tuned to generate almost 360bhp with a torque of 465Nm. That is an increase of around 20bhp and 15Nm of torque. It is said that Audi is looking to challenge this model with rival cars like the Porsche Boxster S. The car is available in both coupe and roadster versions and potential buyers of the TT RS Plus have the choice of either a six-speed manual transmission or a seven-speed dual clutch transmission (S-tronic). The dual clutch transmission comes installed with a launch control function. The car also gets the company

  18. Just one year ago, Volkswagen introduced the Mk6 Golf Cabriolet at the Geneva Motor Show. And this year at the same auto show, Volkswagen is bringing a production ready Mk6 Golf Cabriolet GTI. The car will be the last Mk6 Golf sub-model before the German automaker unveils the next-generation Golf some time at the end of this year. Volkswagen first showed a concept version of the car in the middle of last year during the 2011 Worthersee Tour. Many felt that it was not surprising for Volkswagen to introduce a GTI version for the car as they have done that before in the Mk1 Golf Cabriolet. The car might retain some of the concept
  19. The cross-sharing of platforms and technologies between models in the automotive industry is not exactly new but in the recent years, many automakers have focused on this even more. The Volkswagen Group is one such company and we can clearly see this in models within the group. Volkswagen has rolled out a new and important piece of technology that will be used in their vehicles starting this year. It is the MQB platform which is Modularer Querbaukasten in German. In English it means Modular Transverse Matrix platform. Flexibility and reduced production costs are the key reasons for this platform. Volkswagen will build 30 models under this particular platform. It covers all models above the group
  20. [extract] The turbocharging of engines in modern cars today is getting pretty common. You can see all sorts of forced induction set-ups, from a small-sized single turbo and up to a twin-turbo set-up. But a triple turbo set-up is something new and two German automakers are venturing into that foray. The rumours of BMW
