Deputy Public Prosecutor Sharmila Sripathy-Shanaz on Wednesday asked for a sentence of 12 years and seven months’ jail. Of this, three months was in lieu of seven strokes of the cane, as Wee is above the age of 50 and cannot be caned. She said “medicine has long been regarded as the most noble of professions”, but Wee’s “senseless actions” violated its ethics and code, “forever shattering” the victim’s life. “Forty-two years after entering a profession committed to the primacy of patient welfare, Wee Teong Boo stands before this court, convicted of sexual assaulting and molesting a young female patient during two medical examinations - his senseless actions violating the very ethical mores that every doctor swears to uphold,” said the prosecutor. GIVING TESTIMONY WAS LIKE BEING RAPED AGAIN: VICTIM The prosecutor reminded the judge of the victim’s testimony during the trial, which the victim had likened to being “raped again”. The woman, aged 23 when the assault took place, had told the court that after the incident, she “was living like a walking dead, walking as per normal, but I was just dead inside”. She also wondered why it happened to her, “out of so many patients”. “What are the odds of being raped when you visit a medical professional in Singapore, in such a safe country? I cannot register why I am the one, I just can’t understand why it happened to me,” the prosecutor recalled the victim saying. The incident affected her classes and "destroyed her trust in male doctors". The victim later requested only for female doctors whenever she visited a polyclinic. She also had trouble with her male friends, unable to accept any intimacy. Wee was acquitted of the rape charge as the judge said he was satisfied that there was reasonable doubt as to whether penile penetration could have taken place. On Wednesday, the prosecutor said Wee had been "utterly disgraceful" in court, in particular retorting during cross-examination: "I do not consider her (the patient) a victim." "This barbed taunt smacks of arrogance and pure defiance and ... lack of remorse," said the prosecutor. She also said that Wee maligned the integrity and character of independent witnesses during the trial, claiming that a doctor on the stand was not giving objective evidence and instead was embellishing it to suit the prosecution's case. He also maligned police officers, calling them "stupid" and "blatantly lying about ill treatment while in custody", said the prosecution. Wee’s defence counsel Edmond Pereira said he will not be making submissions on sentence as his client is maintaining his innocence. He pointed to Wee's history of medical conditions, including diabetes and hypertension, and pointed out that there was no need for the prosecution to increase an "already lengthy" jail term as Wee will be in his late 70s by the time he is released from prison. He also tried contesting the compensation order relating to the victim's counselling fees, saying there was no evidence in court about the counselling when the victim testified. SINGAPORE - A self-employed man was sentenced to three weeks in jail on Monday for slapping teenage blogger Amos Yee outside the State Courts last month. Neo Gim Huah, 49, was charged in court on Monday. He was not represented and gave a long mitigation plea in Chinese, explaining why he did it. He told the court earlier he wanted to teach Yee a lesson. Neo, who runs his own air-conditioning and electrical engineering business, said he had taken offence at portions of the video posted online by Yee which he found disrespectful to Singapore's founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew. He closely monitored the case and intended to confront and slap the blogger before his first two court appearances as he felt that the teenager's actions had portrayed Singapore in a negative light. Deputy Public Prosecutor (DPP) Winston Man said Neo initially restrained himself and did not confront Yee until his third court appearance on April 30 when he realised the teenager had flouted his bail conditions. Neo also believed that it would be difficult for the criminal justice system to deal effectively with Yee because of his age. On the afternoon of April 30, he waited at the State Courts for Yee to arrive. He knew the media was present when he slapped the blogger, and deliberately committed the offence as he wanted the assault to be publicised "so that the world at large would know that the victim was being taught a lesson''. Neo was arrested at about 2am the next day. Arguing for a sentence of two weeks' jail, DPP Man said Neo's offence was pre-meditated and featured a strong element of vigilantism, which undermined law enforcement mechanisms and the criminal justice system. "Public confidence in law enforcement mechanics and the criminal justice system will also be eroded if there is a widespread perception that it is acceptable to take the law into one's own hands and resort to violence in order to address a perceived injustice,'' he said. Neo said in his mitigation letter that Yee had been disrespectful to Singapore's founding father and insulted him, making all of Mr Lee's contributions "worthless''. He said Yee, whom he described as a "clever child'', had let everyone down. "What I feel is what everybody is feeling," he said. FOSHAN - The driver who ran over and killed a 2-year-old girl in Foshan, Guangdong province, in October 2011 was sentenced to 30 months in prison for negligent homicide. A court found in September that Hu Jun had driven a van over Wang Yue, a girl widely known as Yue Yue, in a hardware market in Foshan. Minutes later, the girl was run over again, that time by a truck. Video footage showed that at least 18 people passed by the child after the accident without helping her. Seven minutes after Yue Yue had been run over, a 57-year-old rag collector named Chen Xianmei spotted her and found her parents. The girl died in a hospital a week later. Hu Jun's final sentence was a year shorter than the one he had received when he was convicted, Yangcheng Evening News reported on Wednesday. The report said witnesses, as well as other evidence, suggested that Hu had not been initially aware that he had hit someone. It wasn't until three days after the accident that he turned himself in to the police. Hu filed an appeal over his initial sentence. He and others involved in the accident eventually reached an agreement with Yue Yue's parents, pledging to pay them 303,000 yuan ($48,647) in compensation. The parents later said they understood Hu. The court that heard Hu's appeal, the Foshan Intermediate People's Court, decided the agreement constituted grounds for reducing Hu's criminal responsibility. Yue Yue's case gave rise to heated discussions across the country, prompting commentators and the public to discuss morality in modern society. Yue Yue's death, although extremely sad, has had some good effects, said Tan Fang, a professor with the South China Normal University in Guangzhou. Robert Stephen Dahlberg, a stock broker and former junior Tall Black basketballer, appeared in a Singapore court last week charged with causing grievous bodily harm - relating to an alleged booze-fuelled altercation in April 2010 in which two locals were injured. Dad Bill Dahlberg, a trustee of the Canterbury Community Trust, said despite his son having skipped the country in July last year, he had always been keen to honour his obligations, though he would defend the charges. "Robert did the right thing by going to the police in the days after the incident and voluntarily giving a statement. He continued to be concerned about the welfare of Mr Liew [one of the injured] and made repeated offers to pay for medical expenses and arrange for him to see a specialist. "Robert stayed in Singapore, gaining permanent residency status, for 14 months after the incident. It was a shock to us all when charges were laid." Last July, he paid a $23,000 bond to travel for business while on bail. He promised to return to Singapore, but skipped to New Zealand. Dahlberg returned to Singapore and was arrested upon arrival and appeared in court. His next court date is in two weeks.

He also expressed regret that he did not cooperate promptly with SMRT staff during its investigation into the picture that purported to show a train moving with a set of its doors open. It was posted last week by Ms Samantha Francis, 23, a Stomp content producer. She has since been sacked. Mr Azhar was writing in response to a letter from SMRT's interim chief executive Tan Ek Kia, which said that he had withheld material information from SMRT staff after the picture was first posted. 'This was a serious error of judgment on my part,' Mr Azhar, 32, wrote. 'I can only say in mitigation that as a relatively new editor, this was the first time I was dealing with a situation like this.' Over the course of their disagreement, the foreigner touches him on the face. He responds by shoving him back, and gets slapped in the face. According to the video's description, the Korean man had been drunk at the time of the incident. He had apparently boarded a taxi but had turned violent when the cabby asked him to fasten his seatbelt. A passerby -- the man seen arguing in the video -- then intervened to help out the cabby. The video was uploaded two days ago on May 14. Said the STOMPer: "I found this video of a Korean punching a local. "The Korean was drunk and riding in a taxi. "An argument broke out, and then a passer-by stepped in to 'help' the cabbie. "In the end, the Korean hit him in the face. "If you keep annoying a drunk guy, you are obviously asking for trouble! A private chef was charged on Friday for negligent driving, causing the death of a motorcyclist and endangering the life of passenger of another car in 2009. Melvyn Lee Shang Bin, 26, was sentenced to a month in jail for the first two charges, and fined $2,500 for the third charge, reported The Straits Times. Lee, who used to be part of the cooking duo The Funky Chefs, was also disqualified from driving for five years. The district court heard that Lee was driving his father's orange Nissan Murano along East Coast Parkway on Oct 18, 2009. He sideswiped a white car in the lane as he veered left, injuring Tan Sien Keam who was sitting in the front-seat. The impact caused his car to move onto the other side of the expressway hitting motorcyclist Muhammad Farhan Kassim, 26, and resulted in his death. Lee claimed that the white Toyota had veered into his path causing the accident. However, witnesses say that the Toyota was travelling at about 90kmh, before his car sped past and collided with it. Lee has had a bad driving record of careless driving and drink-driving. Deputy Public Prosecutor Yang Ziliang said that the latest offence occured barely four months after the chef regained his driving licence. Said the STOMPer: "I was driving my car out of my HDB estate near Blk 679B Jurong West Central 1 at about 1:30pm yesterday (Dec 10). "As I was exiting the HDB estate, there was a car in front of me which safely proceeded onto the main road. "I was the second car and as I was driving out of the estate towards the main road, my entire car sank into an unknown depression. "There was a loud bang, and I noticed that my car had tilted towards the right side in a very dangerous manner. "My engine stalled and I was unable to drive on. Due to the impact of the accident, I suffered severe pains in my lower back and I had to stagger out of my car. "To my horror, when I came out of my car, I noticed that the manhole cover was missing. "Subsequently, upon examining the hole which was about 1.5 metres deep, I found that the manhole metal cover was broken into pieces and had landed at the bottom of the manhole. "My car was stuck at the location for a total of 3 hours. From the pictures which I had taken, the metal cover covering the manhole had broken into three pieces. "The surrounding area around the manhole was also rusty. The missing manhole cover can lead to serious injuries or even death for: 1. Pedestrians especially elderly and young children 2.
