What Will it Take to Get Singaporeans to Give Up Their Cars? CAR OWNERSHIP Joanne Poh February 23, 2015 http://blog.moneysmart.sg/car-ownership/what-will-it-take-to-get-singaporeans-to-give-up-their-cars/ Many foreigners are baffled as to why a Singaporean would want to buy a car, paying several times the price of a car in their own home countries. After all, they insist, the MRT system is fantastic and so much better than the subway in New York or the Tube in London. Others argue that car ownership takes on an aspirational veneer in Singapore, and people are willing to pay a lot of money to realise the dream. However, as any Singaporean knows, public transport can only get you so far if you dont live near an MRT station and dont go out after midnight. In order to really change Singaporeans attitude to car ownership, some changes need to happen first, like the following. Increased accessibility to public transport The occasional breakdown and daily shoving matches not withstanding, the MRT is fairly efficient. While it pales in comparison to its counterparts in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Taipei, it does offer the quickest way to get from Jurong East MRT station to Bugis MRT station, especially considering the jams on the road. But the problem is that most Singaporeans live in suburban areas quite a distance from the central zone, and unless you actually live within wallking distance of Jurong East MRT in the above example, getting to the station can be a big headache in itself. I cant pretend Im not just a little bitter about this, as I live in an area with only one bus, which has taken up to 1 hour to arrive in the past. When you think about all that lost time spent waiting for the bus in order to get to the MRT station, its not hard to see why many Singaporeans dont mind shelling out the cash to buy a car. Either driving to work or using the park and ride scheme to get to an MRT station can save you more than an hour each daya life saver if you have to work long hours. Cheaper late night transport options While raising the prices of cars can deter people from buying them, those who routinely travel after midnight save much less, which then increases the attractiveness of having your own transport. Taxi fares in Singapore have risen quite a bit over the last ten years, and taking a 30 minute cab ride after midnight can easily cost you more than $25. If you go out for late night suppers a lot, get the urge to shop at Mustafa at 3am or work the graveyard shift but have a meagre transport allowance, getting a car makes a lot of sense. While we do have NightRider and Night Owl bus services, these are limited and operate only only Fridays and Saturdays and the eve of public holidays, presumably to cater to partygoers. I personally think the NightRider services are great, and if they could be extended to the other days of the week and serve a wider range of areas, going out at night would be a lot more affordable, considering the cost of two beers and a cab ride home with midnight surcharge could easily set you back $50. More independence and free time for kids Many Singaporeans Ive spoken to seem to be of the opinion that a car becomes a necessity when you have kids. However, unless you ferry your kids around every single day, the odd taxi ride to the zoo or the clinic would probably still cost much less than a car. The problem is that many Singaporeans actually do ferry their kids around every single day. I live just outside a primary school, and every morning and afternoon the road gets jameed by an insane number of parental cars just waiting to drop their offspring off at the school gates. Many parents prefer to get stuck in a neverending queue of parents cars than to drop their kids off a 5 minute walk away. Singapore is one of the safest countries in the world and actually the perfect place for kids to learn how to use public transport on their own, since theres little fear of their being kidnapped and sold as slaves. On the other hand, very often its not that kids arent able to take public transport on their ownbut rather that they have too many after school activities. Parents need cars so they can drive frantically from tuition centres to piano lessons to Young Genius seminars. If kids are allowed to be independent and free up enough time in their schedule to remove the need for parents to become chauffeurs, more people might realise that it is indeed possible to parent without a car. Greater comfort on public transport If youve ever had a migraine, been pregnant or just damned tired after another 12 hour work day, youve probably sworn that you would either quit your job or buy a car. For many people, their biggest bugbear about having to rely on public transport isnt commuting timeits comfort level. To be fair, the MRT and buses in Singapore are actually quite comfortable on their own. Nobodys asking for velvet cushions or free foot massages during their commute. But when the trains and buses are packed to bursting point, you have to stand throughout an hour-long commute and youve got armpits in your face and heels stabbing at your feet, a car looks that much more appealing. Unfortunately, even if SMRT started being more generous about the air con on the trains and hiring smiling greeters to wish passengers a pleasant commute, the crux of the matter is that for those with a long commute, standing for an hour or more causes enough discomfort to send them running to car dealers. When youre already exhausted from work, trying to balance on the steps of an overcrowded bus or having to grab for the poles as the driver makes yet another emergency stop can take its toll. With office decentralisation already starting to happen and the government making efforts to improve the capacity of the public transport infrastructure, lets hope this problem gets solved someday. Do you have a car and why did you buy one despite the high cost? Share your reasons! :)

Malaysians are getting fed up with their garment. From not trusting their Polis to catch a criminal, now they are doing their own road works. From this article, i liked the last line. "“Most people never act and that only adds to the long list of complaints.” Says alot of complainers but no action from them. We have alot in this forum..... https://sg.news.yahoo.com/fed-kl-pockmarked-roads-bikers-matters-own-hands-232900841.html KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 8 — They first started with a can of spray paint, marking around potholes on the roads of Kuala Lumpur to alert motorists of the hazard. The group of bikers also swept away sand and loose stones off busy highways to prevent motorcyclists from skidding. When their leader — actor Azlan Sani Zawawi, 40, or Lando as he prefers to be called — managed to save up some cash, they planted flowers in the pitted surfaces for a more obvious hazard sign. When his business grew, Lando and his biker friends took to road work themselves, patching up sinkholes and potholes left unattended by Kuala Lumpur City Hall. “We have been doing this since 2008,” Lando said at his latest patch-up operation in Wangsa Melawati called Jangan Gebang, Turap Lubang (Don’t Pose, Patch the Hole). “I’ve been blessed to get support from friends and members of the public, who joined in when they learned about what I have been doing. “Those who come out to help me are usually bikers like myself and so I named our group Ikatan Silaturrahim Brotherhood, comprising bikers from various biker associations. “The pothole (in Wangsa Melawati) has been there for over five months and is a hazard, especially for motorcyclists. “Despite numerous complaints, City Hall failed to fix the road, so our group decided to act ourselves.” After an hour’s work, they managed to level the road in Jalan 2/27a Lingkaran Tengah 2. The Kuala Lumpur-born businessman spent RM2,500 to hire a lorry and bought tools and materials for the repair work, including two tonnes of tar and gravel. He said katan Silaturrahim Brotherhood had carried out 30 road repairs around Wangsa Maju, Taman Seri Rampai, Taman Melawati and areas near the KL Convention Centre (KLCC) so far. Lando said he considered it a service to motorists, especially motorcyclists. “As a road user, I am concerned with the safety of motorists and motorcyclists driving or riding on roads filled with dangerous potholes,” he said. “The authorities are slow in their maintenance, often leaving the roads unlevelled and unpatched for months. “I find their lackadaisical attitude irresponsible, especially when road hazards are serious dangers that could result in fatalities.” Lando said he had lost two friends and an uncle after they crashed while avoiding road hazards. Over the years, he has spent close to RM20,000 to hire lorries and buy gravel and tar as well as tools for his initiatives. Despite rising costs, he said he had never accepted donations. “I prefer to use my own money. It took some time to save up but I managed to gather the funds by selling T-shirts and merchandises from my business,” he said. “Those who wish to help can donate their time and effort or hire a lorry with materials that we can use.” Asked the reason for his services, he said he considered it his personal civic duty. As a habit, Lando and his friends take note of the roads that require attention. He also posts pictures of potholes and other road hazards on his Facebook page, “Lando Zawawi DatokBandar KL”. “I post the pictures to warn people to be careful on those roads. Sometimes, people reach out and suggest places I can work on and they would volunteer to help,” he said. Lando said as a rule, he limited the number of people who joined him at each road work operation. “Safety is the No. 1 issue as it is risky patching up the road and relaying traffic at the same time,” he said. “That is why I carry out the work late at night when there are fewer vehicles.” Lando’s wife, Nurul Jannah Abdul Halim, 31, often joins him on his excursions that sometimes finish in the wee hours of the morning. “I am proud of his passion to help others in the way he feels truly beneficial,” she said. “I am concerned for his safety, that is why I like to tag along.” Road contractor Mohammad Fadzil Hashim, 22, volunteered after stumbling upon Lando’s Facebook page and hearing about his deeds from friends. He joined Lando for the first time last Thursday. “I do this for a living and when I heard about Lando, I was inspired to join him” he said. “Most people never act and that only adds to the long list of complaints.”

Seeing the recent spat among members here reminds me of some life lessons about internet forum I'd like to share with you guys. Pardon my long winded story but I hope you find it useful too: Year: 2001 Forum: Some USA based forum for comics and artists. members are usually art students posting their artworks and we critique and comment to help them improve. My role: I'm a senior member, pretty much well liked as my comments are usually fair and helpful. Made some friends from the forum and even met local members from SG and still in contact with some of them till this day. To put it simple, I had a reputation. Incident: A new member by the name of "baby4eva" (I will not forget that nick) posted an artwork that he/she drew and ask for comments. It was a simple anime-style girl. I looked and thought it looked familiar. After much research, I realised the artwork is a direct copy from a Hentai Artwork from a Japanese porn site. "Baby4eva" merely copied the character line by line and then added the clothes (The character was naked from the original pic). plagiarism is a serious thing and the forum rules states that any members found plagiarising other materials as their own will be banned from the site. I was furious cos (1)It's not a genuine artwork as it's a direct tracing and (2)It's copied from porn. Arming with evidence and the overzealous intention to uphold justice. I blasted "baby4eva" on the thread. I accused "baby4eva" for plagirism and demand her to own up and remove her artwork within 24hrs or else I will prove to everyone of my findings to expose her. But "baby4eva" did not reply, he/she simply disappeared off the radar and never replied. I was thinking I have won. I was successfully kicked out a fake member and saved the beloved forum from fake wannabes Other members became curious. Some sided me, some gave "baby4eva" benefit of doubt and some blasted me for being rude to noobs and not showing prove. So since this small group of people wanted evidence, I showed them. I posted the original picture and then overlay them to show that "baby4eva" simply traced the picture via photoshop. I posted the link of the original artwork, which points to the porn site. I did all this to shut up the naysayers. I did wrong. The next day, I logged in an got a rude shock. My post showing the evidence was removed from the post and I was given a warning by the mod and admin. First, I broke the rule of posting porn materials and linking to a porn site. Secondly I intigated a quarrel in the forum. The admin PMed me that While they appreciate members to be forthcoming and proactive in the forum, they will not tolerate instigation and vigilantism in the forums even if the other party is the offender. I roughly remember what the admin using the phrase "The last thing I want to to have members banging on the barn with torches and pitchforks. Any offence should be reported to the admin or mods." Due to my reputation, the admin gave me a chance and still allow me in the forum. But I was deeply affected by the incident. I was angry, I felt I was wronged and unfairly treated. I was just trying to make the forum a better place and got shot down by the people I supported. I remembered it was CNY that time but I did not enjoy the holiday and I did not sleep well thinking about the incident. After a week later the thread died down and I almost forgot about it. Then "Baby4eva" replied. The thread immediately became boiling hot and he/she started a drama. Acting as a girl, "Baby4eva" insist it was her own creation and any likeness was coincidental. She threw alot of dramatic flowery words and accuse me of not Showing proof(cos was deleted by the mods) and spoiling her day. When others asked her of her disappearance, she cooked up stories that she just got married and had when on a honeymoon and she was expecting good replies and accuses me of spoiling the mood. To garner support she posted pictures of her "honeymoon" to show she was a genuine member and that got her alot of supporters. There I was, witnessing a full-fledge Ang Moh drama of how they and twist and turn their mistakes and flip prata. I felt like I'm watching a bad soap opera. (This experience also armed me on the knowledge of how to deal with AMDK during the cos of my work) I did not post a reply. I don't see the point and was trying to forget this incident. But I got PMed from her supporters asking me to apologize and some, just to fark me for causing all this. Member's memories are short and when you can't even post your evidence of her offence, it's a lost cause. So in order to close the case and let the thread die, I just replied to "apologize" for "causing hurt". It felt sick. 13 years ago, "baby4eva" has kicked "pocus" ass and won the internet forum drama. That few days I couldn't sleep well, I couldn't eat well, I was grumpy. It affect my real life. A few close members and those who knew her offence PMed to console me. A few asked me not to leave the forum(they assumed I would leave). With the expection of one mod which is close to me, None of the other mods nor the admin PMed me. Aftermath: "Baby4eva"'s tricks did not last long though. After that she posted a number of her "own works", all copied from various hentai/porn anime sites. I was not involved as I did not reply to any of her thread since. Some member accused her and she whipped up the same drama mama tactics again to win sympathy. Only this time the members and mod knew her tricks and banned her, her nonsense lasted for 4 months. It was bittersweet. Conclusion: I've since left the forum an moved on. But this incident became a life lesson for me till today after 13 years. I learned that: 1) Forum are not just forums, who are we kidding. If forums were just forums we wouldn't come here everyday. But because forums are not just forums, we should treat it with respect. Just like working in office, basic ethical rules and behavour applies. 2) Treat each members like how you would treat them in real life. Do not do to other how you do not want others to do to you 3) If someone broke the rules or post offensive material, the first rules is to give benefit of doubt. You may be right but you may be wrong. 4) Report if you must, but never openly challenge someone and expect no reaction. 5) We don't own the forum, don't expect mods to be around when shet happen and don't expect them to cover you or sayang you if you got hit by shet. 6) Sometimes if you are repling to an offensive person, it's good to type in a notepad, then save and close and then paste 10 mins later. If you do that you can avoid unnessesary confrontation. 7) Benefit of Doubt 8) You can spend 4 years building a reputation as a good member and a moment of weakness to bring down the reputation and get yourself ban. If (1) is true, apply (2 to 6) 9) You may be a veteran member with 20k post count but without meeting anyone and benefiting from it, you are just a statistic to the forum. 10) If forum has too much shet post, close it and come back another day. 11) All else fails, maybe it's time to quit, go out there and smell real fresh air and experience real things instead of virtual things.

Sorry guys ... not the car, but happened to have the following items at home and I'd much prefer to give them away (yes, for free) to someone who really loves the car and all that it stands for. I have 3 items (personally, I would prefer 3 different people to take 1 item each, unless there are no takers). the books are in excellent shape (the discoloration is the reflection of lighting) Secondly, I will pay for the postage and mail it to you by registered mail- no worries (this however, means you will need to give me your postal address. you can give me initials if you dont want to give me your name not a big deal, but please note if the post office cant accept, there's nothing i can do). also, do understand that I work from morning to evening and may not get the chance to mail out the items immediately. I will endeavor to get it done asap on a Saturday if possible. (or at least, by this month .. promise!!) (i also happen to have a CF GTR keychain .. it is brand new in the box .. *somewhere*. I will do my best to find it and I'll give it away as well). if you have GTR / skyline car models, I guess these books / booklet will go well (they can be coffee table books, but the usage is up to you of course) lastly - if this is not acceptable to the moderators/mcf .. please let me know. i am not selling anything .. just feel like sharing these items! item 1: a small 6 page hard cardboard, high quality booklet with some details of the car, inside the "booklet": item 2: picture book 1 ... about 30 to 40 pages i assume .. of pictures of the car inside book 1: book 2: slightly thinner than book 1 i think. but has a couple of similar pages. believe this is an updated copy, i think) book 2 inside:

Quite often saw 'police car' use normal plate escort 'cd' or 'q' plate this 'police' car so far i saw only volvo xc90 or land rover freelander 2 with blue-red light + police sign inside the behind window car. what i keep thinking, is this real police car, why: - use normal plate, instead q plate? - the blue-red light inside the behind window car instead outside top roof? - the police sticker also inside window, not at body of car. and of course, the driver always have pole position in need for speed/ f1 / racing ps3/ xbox games

basically i will summarise as easily as possible. we agree to deal a vehicle at price $88k and i am the seller. the deposit was $1k by check and we sign an agreement with this specific clause: the deal will only go through if they secured insurance for the vehicle. otherwise, the deposit must be returned. now they want to back off from the deal and they ask me not to bank in the check. the reason they gave was that the insurance they were quoted were too high. i have not told them that i intend to keep the deposit. they will obviously state that they have the right to get back the deposit because they did not secure the insurance. but i feel that that term did not state clearly. it was quite obvious that when someone say cannot secure insurance, it it because nobody want to insure. now the problem is many people want to insure, just that they feel too expensive. i rejected an offer at $87k because they gave me this deposit. now i ask the second offer guy, he say he bought another car already. i feel very lugi le. what do you guys think? should i bank in the check tmr? of course, my guess is that they should have already canceled the check. but do i have a case if i go CASE?

I've been encountering this problem ever since I started driving here in march. When I want to change lane, mostly because I want to exit from the highway or when I want to make a turn soon, I noticed majority of the behind car on the lane I want to enter would be either simply bo chap and driving as if I don't exist of worse, step on the gas to close in to stop me from entering... What's the problem? Macam like I'm going to outrage their modesty.... Is it so hard to slow down to let ppl enter the lane. I can understand in the case where there is a queue, some car just want to cut queue, that I will be tulan too. What I'm talking about is usual driving speed. Also, I don't mean those sudden "makan" into ppl's lane.
