  2. LINK SHANGHAI : A Chinese pilot's refusal to give up his landing slot to a passenger plane that issued a distress call to say it was running out of fuel almost caused a disaster, state media reported Thursday. China's privately-owned Juneyao Airlines confirmed that one of its pilots refused to give way when a Qatar Airways plane contacted air traffic controllers at Hongqiao airport, asking permission to land immediately. The pilot of the Qatar plane said it had just five minutes' worth of fuel left after it was diverted from Shanghai, the Global Times newspaper reported, adding that a disastrous accident was only narrowly averted. The Qatar plane was travelling from Doha to Shanghai when it was ordered to divert due to a thunderstorm on August 13. Air traffic controllers in Hongqiao, about 45 kilometres (30 miles) from Shanghai, ordered the Juneyao pilot to circle the airport and allow the Qatar plane to land first, but the pilot refused. The Global Times said the Juneyao pilot claimed he had been waiting "a long time" and needed to land "right now", citing comments posted online. Shanghai-based Juneyao Airlines, which was founded in 2005, said the pilot and crew had been suspended pending the outcome of the investigation, but that the "rumours on the Internet are far from the truth". "It remains doubtful whether the fuel on the Qatar Airways plane was really fewer than five minutes," the paper quoted a spokeswoman as saying. "And why didn't it inform the tower controller earlier?" At one point, the two aircraft came perilously close for there to be a risk of collision, according to an aviation forum quoted in The Global Times. "A Mayday is rare and means the plane is in an extreme emergency and may even face the danger of a crash," the paper quoted an unnamed senior air traffic control official as saying. China's civil aviation authority said in a statement it was investigating the incident and those responsible would be "severely punished". The Qatar plane landed safely after the incident. - AFP/ir
  3. I am in lane 3, the "slowest" lane, traveling at the speed limit, 80km/h. A police van came behind me, traveling maybe a bit faster, with its siren lights on without the pee bo pee bo. I looked to my right, lane 2 and lane 1, no cars, he can simply overtake me by the right, but he choose to follow me behind. therefore, I presume he is not in a hurry though the siren lights were on. I refused to give way as firstly, i am already traveling at the slowest lane, no more lanes on my left, at the speed limit. secondly if he is on urgent duty, he should filter to the right and overtakes me which is the right way to do as we are all taught that overtaking should be done on the right not left. So i heck care and drive on as i never believe police are the king of the road... if it was u, will u purposely filter to the right and let him past?

  6. Hello all, I have some car decals left over from a community effort I participated in. The message is "Go Safe Online", how to make your cyber experience more secure. Go to http://gosafeoneline.sg to find out. Thing is, I got these free from the organizers, and so would like to return to the community. But rather than people coming to me individually, I'd prefer to distribute on a single day, single location... just like how the radio stations give out decals. Or anyone has any other ideas (free of course). Please reply this thread to signal your interest (sorry, one per member). Last count, I have 30 decals... I wished I had more.
  7. Was quite pissed off when my mum recounted this to me yesterday, I sent them to Changi Airport and they had a fun time granny and grandkid. Thereafter, the both of them took a train to my place (My daughter loves taking public transport). On the train an old lady in her 60s boarded and a kind soul gave up his seat, immediately a 20+ year old PRC plonked himself into the seat. Standing up for herself, the old lady in her 60s said the seat was meant for her. The PRC refused to get up saying he didn't know. A lady in her 40s seating beside the PRC gave up her seat instead to the lady in her 60s, when the lady sat down she gave the PRC a long tirade about the matter. The PRC guy actually shot back and said he didn't know and the more he gets scolded, all the more he will not get up. In the end he was scolded so badly he finally gave up. My daughter was frightened by this behaviour as they got quite loud, my mum said she was about to give the PRC guy a piece of her mind but my daugher was there and she didn't want to set a bad example. I told her that by showing my daughter to stand up for people's rights, it is actually setting a good example. It is civic and moral duty being taught. These PRCs we are getting in are really getting on my nerves with their heck care and me first only mentality.
  8. So our 2-star gona donate his pay to society? [thumbsup] From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1130186/1/.html SINGAPORE: Major-General (NS) Chan Chun Sing, newly-elected MP for Tanjong Pagar GRC, has said he wants to engage and give back to the community. He will be sworn in on Saturday as the Acting Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports as well as Minister of State for Information, Communications and the Arts. Maj-Gen (NS) Chan said he received bursaries from the government and charitable organisations while in primary school. His new portfolio is a way for him to give back to the system, he said. Speaking to Channel NewsAsia after his usual morning walk in Commonwealth on Friday, he said he expects Singapore's low fertility rate and social mobility issues to continue to be important for MCYS and where it will need to work with other ministries. Maj-Gen (NS) Chan said his focus now is to listen to all stakeholders before implementing policies. ".....listen carefully to what people have to say, listen to what people feel are the challenges, then together with the stakeholders, we can develop a good plan to bring Singapore forward and help people that really need help," he said. Maj-Gen (NS) Chan added that his experience in the army will come in handy, especially when engaging the youth. "The unique thing about the Singapore army is that, being a conscript army, we take in people from all walks of life. So the kind of challenges that young people face from all walks of life will be reflected in the army. The army is, in a sense, a microcosm of the kind of challenges in society," he said. Maj-Gen (NS) Chan said that today's youth yearn for a different way of engagement. Using an analogy, he said it is like their preference for pizza joints that allow people to make their own pizzas - from making the dough to adding the ingredients to cooking it - as opposed to going for fixed choices from a menu in restaurants. ".....there's a sense of participation, never mind the taste....You might argue that the taste is better or not so good compared to the original menu that the owner has given you in the original choice," he said. "But (in) the process of partaking in policy-making, the process of having discussed the issues, you find that ownership. So I think this is the power of the young people nowadays, and we should tap on this energy to really bring them forward." - CNA/ir

  12. got the intension to switch from cl7a to camry 2.4 due to bigger space, quietness and bigger cc of camry 2.4. during the test drive, i found that the low end torque is quite ok and gives the feeling of lightness despite heavy body. however when i was about to drive out to the main road, i try to floor the throttle and ramp the engine to feel the responsiveness, i am surprise to see the car won't move at all. all i can feel was like the car just move linearly no matter how hard i floor the throttle. i am quite dissapointed.....anyone can comment?

  16. SingaporeHOME > BREAKING NEWS > SINGAPORE > STORY Mar 3, 2011Give tips or pay service charge? Take our poll THE big push for productivity has started, with Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean revealing in Parliament on Tuesday that almost $500 million of the new National Productivity Fund is available to help companies in the productivity drive. For those in the food and beverage industry, this could mean greater automation and reliance on better skilled labour. One intriguing option: Getting customers to tip instead of paying a service charge. Placing the onus on service staff to earn their tips may raise service standards and productivity levels. But will penny-pinching Singaporeans play by the rules? Tell us what you think. Source. Vote for voluntary tipping or pay service charge! Personally I prefer tipping..
  17. I guess many ppl here can understand the above phrase..... In regard to ppl who formulate public policies...this is one phrase that feature prominently on their minds. Take for example the recent out burst of those many ppl who were caught for OPC violations. They can cite every other reason(s) for their failure to comply...except to comply. Remember those days when they have to physically display a large coupon, which they have to purchase before they can even use their OPC car? They are now given the the laxity of using their OPC car first without a coupon and is then given more than ample time to buy one....later but within the specified time frame. Yet these ppl can't or won't comply. Take another example of using your vehicle to pass thru the ERP gantry or Restricted zone. Remember those early days when one have to purchase a valid coupon and display it at the front of the vehicle so that he enforcement officer can physically spot whether the vehicles have or do not have a coupon displayed, upon entering those areas? Of course with the cumbersome old system, many cheats have gotten away and some valid coupon users are mistakenly prosecuted for it. I can cite many other examples in life where things have gotten much better here but the humans haven't. I believe that any new system must be an improvement over any older system or method, the only missing ingredient here is when a better system is being used , the ppl using it have to be empowered to be able to use it honestly. The last phrase is where almost all the failures are due to...in regard to policies, rules, moral values, charity work, usage of funds and everthing that make man as what he is. Normal humans are unlike laboratory rats. They know full well at any time, when they are doing something bad and when they are doing good with the exception of those suffering from mental illness. The only sad thing is...many choose to do the bad ones more than the good ones even as a society develops to become a so called 'WORLD CLASS SYSTEM'.

  19. A common scenario on the roads. You are signalling and trying to change lanes. Will the car in the other lane slow down and give way to you or it will just ignore you/try to block you from filtering?? I wonder what are the experiences like for fellow drivers?
  20. Found the following old videos quite entertaining
  21. Do you support the extension of the Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme to more locations to speed up bus travel? http://talk2lta.lta.gov.sg/HomePage?action....Home.QuickPoll Your vote is keep in strict confidential. Just take a look what had happen at our Legend. http://www.mycarforum.com/index.php?showtopic=2657873&hl He had was being involved in a traffic accident causing unnecessary delays to others. If that there wasn't any mandatory give way to buses scheme, he would not had stopped and being hit from behind. I believe that the accident had happen in a non-peak period thus traffic delays are manageable. However if that this accident happen in a peak period in a 3 lane road. Closure of 1 lane = less 33.3% efficient + merger of lane 3 to lane 2 causes other % less efficient + safety distance, braking and acceralations delays % less efficient + people looking at Porchse of 4 digits = more delays. And also ambulance to arrive = vehicle had not planned to travel to that destination = more space for another vehicle = delay yet again. Recovery vehicles & cleaning crew = more and more delays. If that the bus have no mandatory give way to buses scheme, bus driver had graciously "give way" to others = improving overall efficent = better flow for the next bus to arrive as well. Solved the bottle neck congestions & overall logistics.
  22. Just a simple poll. Do you guys give away coupons which you used half-way and there is some leftover time? Let's say u tear a 1 hr parking coupons and left 30mins..will u give to the next driver who parks? For those that don't..what's ur reason(s)? for myself..I have always given away coz i can't used them anyway..since I'm going somewhere else or back to work..i've received leftover coupons myself too..from kind drivers who's leaving early..pay it forward perhaps? whatever it is..whats ur views or opinions?
