  1. Read this Straits Times Forum article. As a concerned parent with children struggling, I find our Singapore Education methods, a few screws missing. The writer said, I quote : Not only the questions very difficult but some were also couched in complex sentences requiring a good grasp of the language, and at the same time guessing correctly what the setter wanted them to do. The smart and above average children got by with the extra help they got at home or at tuition centres.... The parents of average and weak ones would surely be relieved and encouraged if those who set examination papers do so with some thought for the stragglers and strugglers, Ms Wong's argument for a closer affinity between textbooks and examinations deserve the staunch support of all - Parents teachers and administrators alike. Yes I fully agree with the writer. What the teachers teach are basic understanding of the formulae and facts. There is little on Application. Most tests/exams require the child to know how to apply it to solve the equation. Our country wants to create critical thinkers, but its not taught in schools but at homes and tuition centres. Tuition centres and parents deserve more credit for the A*s and not the schools. I may be offensive, I know there will be teachers that go the "extra mile", but few. The teachers are kept busy with completing the syllabus, not by exnsuring the child gets the skill. How sad... The schools and teachers are pressed for time to complete the seriously CRAMPEd syllabus in a year, tell me how can any school teach the child indepth knowledge to handle the exam questions ? NONE. The tuition centres become an indispensible avenue to go to to achieve that, thus our Spore education, viewed from the outside world, looks so brilliant.
  2. ...are still der....lane markings and all.......  Maybe they gonna amend slightly to 'GIVE WAY TO P*P'....(LIGHTNING SIGN ON THE ROAD)
  3. YOG officially ended, so will the authority remove those signage or leave them there to fade off? From what I know, no motorist is book and fined for this offense...
  4. Do I need to give way to these #@%!$^ buses on those non designated GIVE WAY lane in the major expressways? (ie. on other trunk road) Pardon if I have not been following other threads.
  5. i'm all for giving way to yog vehicles on the selected 2nd lanes on the roads, but how the hell we know it is a yog car or bus by looking at the rear-view mirror?
  6. Just a couple of days ago, I spotted a YOG bus cruising happily at 60KM/H on lane 2 CTE. I was like WTF...... Its more like they are hogging the road and blocking our way than we blocking them..... YOG buses should just keep left with good vehicles and stop blocking us!
  7. ...or u kena fine [laugh]
  8. Thu, Jun 24, 2010 The Star/Asia News Network GEORGE TOWN: The authorities are investigating a vernacular newspaper report that a Year Three schoolgirl gave birth to a baby boy after she allegedly had an affair with her 14-year-old neighbour. State Health, Welfare and Caring Society Committee chairman Phee Boon Poh said he was shocked to read the news in a Chinese daily yesterday. "I have since alerted all departments concerned under my portfolio to investigate the matter. This is a very serious matter. Having sexual intercourse with a minor is considered statutory rape," he said. Phee added that they only had sketchy reports with not much information, adding that his office had referred the matter to the police. "Any medical practitioner who delivered the baby boy must alert the state Health Department as the mother is said to be a nine-year-old. Those hiding information or abetting the crime will be charged. I appeal to those with information to come forward," he said. Penang deputy police chief Senior Asst Comm (I) Datuk Tun Hisan Tun Hamzah said police had not received any report on the case. State Education Department director Ibrahim Mohamad said he had checked with all the school principals and they claimed there was no such case in their schools. "But I have been informed by my officer that there is a schoolgirl who had taken numerous MCs (medical certificates) before dropping out of school recently. I cannot ascertain whether the case is related. We will, however, investigate the matter," he said. According to the Chinese daily, the girl, who comes from a broken home, gave birth at a private hospital some time last month. The girl, the paper claimed, seemed mature for her age as she was big compared with other girls of her age. The report claimed that the boy's affair with the girl started when she was eight. The baby is said to be taken care of by the girl's grandmother, who disclosed the case to a non-governmental organisation that alerted the paper about it. -The Star/Asia News Network

  10. Do you ever give way to these cars? When they signal or try to cut into your lane, do you slow down and give way to them? For me, depends on my mood. If good mood, give those BMW/Merc space. If bad mood.... WEll too bad for them. As for those Porsche/Ferrari/Lambo etc..... Nope. Never ever..... They can only cut in behind me but not in front. Too bad for them.

  13. Coco, a young 8 month old female dog, sterilized, lives at a farm after her caretaker stopped taking care of her due to his poor health. Coco is a sweet girl, a bit shy initially, but she will warm up when she knows you mean no harm. At the farm where she was, Coco is always alone by herself at an area, having this sad ...look on her face. A small dog compared with other stray dogs, Coco is about the size of a cocker spaniel, she seems to have some spanell blood in her. We are looking for a foster/adopter for Coco so that she can live in safety, without always fearing the threat of being caught and culled, simply cos she is born a stray. Please email us at [email protected]. Thank you.
  14. This is the case in some western countries. If you need to learn driving, you can just get anyone with a license (usually a parent) to teach you. Can this system work in Singapore?
  15. ST Forum Home > ST Forum > Story Feb 25, 2010 BUDGET 2010 Give us a break - increase personal tax relief THIS year's Budget was disappointing because it excluded tax breaks for individuals and families. Personal relief for the taxpayer, his spouse and qualifying child relief deserved attention. The wife relief of $2,000 per year works out to about $5.50 per day. The Finance Ministry should also have left the 20 per cent income tax rebate untouched, at least for this year. Increasing the personal tax relief will put more cash in the hands of many cash-strapped breadwinners. The Government will get some, if not much, of it back anyway via the goods and services tax. While the economy may have brightened somewhat, middle-income earners are still struggling, especially with cashflow problems. Andy Leong

  23. Hi bro, I just curious about what are the usual path people take to go to local university (NUS,NTU and SMU). Currently, I am a year 1 student @ SMU and I am basically struggling with everything. Prior to that, I was from NYP and I did quite well with an overall GPA of 3.5. Most of my peers from polytechnic are also struggling to make a mark for ourselves in SMU. I did not know about other universities that why I am trying to find some opinions from you guys here. I came from a neighbourhood pri and sec school, My O level results aren't that fantastic. 23 pointer... English only C6. But my Hokkien sure A1. hahaha... Does 2 years in JC helps you adopting life in University better or 3 years in polytechnic? What is your choice? Anyway, my personal view, I think that JC students have strong command in english languages, be it verbally or written. They are very good at expressing themselves and are very vocal when it comes to class participation in SMU. Polytechnic students like us does not have such a strong command in english. When I submit my individual projects, my prof actually pin point all my grammers! It damn saddening to say that us polytechnic students has such lousy english standard or is it just me? The only advantages we have is prior experience to technology stuff which means that we are more tech-savvy, that's all. And I really admired those JC student who can speak professional english. How I wish I could be like them. Oh yah, not forgetting our foreign students. SMU has a lot of foreign students from Myanmar, Thailand, Vietnam, Indonesia and China. Some of the more weird one are people from South Africa, South Korea and Japan studying here full time. I really have to say that other than their command of english, they are way smarter than all of us Singaporeans. Many came here thru scholarship and we singaporean have to take loan from CPF or Bank to study. How sad can it be isn't it? Hope to see more response to this tread!
  24. Was involved in a chain accident along expressway. I was the last vehicle and my radiator got busted pretty bad. I only managed to get the hp numbers of the 2 drivers in front before we shoo-ed off to the road shoulder, whereby the driver in front of me soon drove off. The thing is, the driver got my particulars from me, but has since refused to reply with his/her particulars. What's the logical reason someone might do this? Invalid licence? Or plotting to claim medical bills using someone else's ID? I just can't think of a reasonable reason why someone would refuse unless there is some scheming involved. Anyone care to give opinions?
