Group I? Group II? What do these base oil groups mean? The American Petroleum Institute (API) Base Stock Categories were established in the early 1990's to make it easier for lubricant blenders to interchange one base stock for another. The original 5 categories were patterned on the base oils which were available at the time. Since that time, the lines between the categories have become less distinct, but these categories are still useful in describing base oils. In general, older technology base oils, produced by solvent refining and solvent dewaxing technology fall into Group I. More modern base oils, using hydroprocessing technology, fall into Groups II and III (Group III if the VI is 120 or greater). Polyalphaolefins (PAOs) are Group IV, and everything else is Group V. Thus, Group V can include quite low quality base stocks, like naphthenic base oils as well as very high quality base stocks like esters. In Europe, a new group has recently been established - Group VI oils. They are polyinternalolefins, PIOs. These oils are not readily available anywhere outside of Italy, but they are somewhat similar to PAOs. The following table defines the official North American Base Oil Groups by their properties: Group I+: Still high sulfur and low saturates, but processing conditions have been adjusted to make higher VI. This higher VI, in the range of 100-105, gives better cold cranking and Noack performance, enabling these base oils to be used in 10W-30 engine oils with minimal Group III or Group II+ correction fluids. Examples are special products from Marathon Ashland and Valero. Making these type of oils reduces base oil yield, so they may cost more than standard Group I. Group II+: Adjusting processing conditions, several refineries can make these oils with 110-120 VI. This enables significantly improved CCS and volatility, making it possible to blend 5W-20 and 5W-30 GF-3 and GF-4 engine oils using these oils without any correction fluids. As with Group I+, the extra quality costs more to produce. Group III+: Not available yet commercially. These will be available in the second half of this decade made from gas to liquid processes. They will have VI's exceeding 140 and will be used for 0W-XX and 5W-XX engine oils and super-premium transmission fluids. Kevlar will be lighter than Carbon Fiber though. need a minimum order of 6pcs to start to make the mould for volvo bonnet regardless of preference for carbon fiber or Kevlar. However, bonnet has to be at least 6 pcs for the same model to start the making of mould. Lead time will be about 2 months and 50% deposit to be placed upon confirmation of order. Hi all! Just wondering if anyone is interested in getting a MP3 head Unit. I went to SLT to source for some... I was looking for the best and cheapest, and found this 2... JVC - KD S785, $230 http://sg.jvc-asia.com/products/caraudiodetails.asp?id=8 Pioneer - DEH-P3550MP, $270 http://www.pioneer.com.sg/products/ca_scdt...deh_p3550mp.asp Both come with remote, MP3 capability, and 1 year manufactor's warranty. Does anyone want to get it? I'm trying to see if more people wanna buy too, so might be able to get more discount.
