  1. July 16, 2008 Snatch theft leaves S'pore granny in coma After hitting her head on kerb, she's now fighting for life, says daughter Madam Rosalind Tay arrived at the hospital about two hours after the incident, but at about 2am, she lapsed into coma and was warded at the Intensive Care Unit. -- PHOTO: THE NEW PAPER She may be 71 but she was a sprightly old lady. Now a snatch theft that turned violent has left Madam Rosalind Thong fighting for her life in hospital. She was robbed while walking home on Sunday night. It left her with severe head injuries and she later lapsed into a coma. Her daughter, Madam Veronica Tay, 46, related the incident to The New Paper at Tan Tock Seng Hospital. At 10.30pm on Sunday, Madam Thong was walking home form the bus-stop at Upper Thomson Road to her semi-detached house, a 15-minute walk away. She was returning home from Chinatown, where Madam Tay, 46, owns a foodstall. Madam Thong, who 'was frugal and preferred to take buses instead of taxis', had taken a bus home after collecting the day's takings from the stall. Said Madam Tay, who is also a marketing manager: 'When she was walking, a man on a motorcycle stopped by the side of the road and asked her for directions in Hokkien. 'Suddenly, he pulled at her gold chain, which was attached to a jade pendant with diamonds, and then he pushed her to the ground. 'She hit her head on the kerb and bled. The thief then rode off.' She said her mother was wiping the blood from her head with tissue paper as she walked home in pain. When she reached the house, where she lives with Madam Tay, she called the police. She also called Mr Andreas Yeap, a chef at the stall. Madam Tay, who was away in Sydney, said that after the police took her mother's statement, they called for an ambulance which sent her mother to TTSH. She arrived at the hospital about two hours after the incident, but at about 2am, she lapsed into coma and was warded at the Intensive Care Unit. Madam Tay said, 'The doctors said the right side of (Madam Thong's) brain is mashed up and her left side is weak and there was bleeding in the front and back of her brain. 'She cannot breathe on her own and has to be on life support. 'They said operating on her has high risks. They might have to remove large parts of her scalp in order to remove the blood clots and she may bleed to death.' She added that her mother was also likely to suffer memory loss after the surgery and may remain in a vegetative state. Police are investigating. Anyone with information should call the police hotline at 1800 255 0000. -- THE NEW PAPER http://www.straitstimes.com/Latest%2BNews/...ory_258208.html
  2. After 5 month still nothing or are we singaporeans getting forgetful? most of the posters are yellow and frayed. no more blair witch project hunts in the mandai forest ..... unless u consider the ah peks there gathering durians part of the effort... causeway still as jammed as ever , not helped by rising petrol prices and checking personnel that look into mini fridges inside the car boot for a possible mSK escape.
  3. This shouldn't have happened: NEA I REFER to the letters, 'More recycling bins needed in HDB estates' by Mr Jonathan Kwok last Tuesday and 'A picture speaks a thousand words' by Mr Tay Yong Hong last Thursday. We appreciate Mr Kwok's commitment to recycling and are pleased to note that the National University of Singapore (NUS) has provided recycling bins extensively within its campus. To facilitate and promote waste recycling in HDB estates and landed homes, we have arranged for public waste collectors (PWCs) to provide recycling bags or recycling bins to households to store their recyclables, which can then be placed outside their doors on a scheduled day every fortnight for collection. In addition, we have arranged for the PWCs to place 1,600 sets of recycling bins within HDB estates, in consultation with town councils as well as residents' committees. Most HDB residents will be able to find a recycling bin within 150m from their block. Recycling bins are generally well used by residents and sufficient to meet their needs. On average, each set of recycling bins collects about 100kg of recyclables per month. Although most residents use recycling bins properly, incidents of misuse occur when residents throw liquid, food and other non-recyclable waste into them. We will continue our efforts to educate residents on the proper use of recycling bins. The recycling bin next to Mr Tay's block was filled before the scheduled weekly collection, and recyclable waste was placed outside the bin. The PWC should have ensured this did not happen by clearing the bins regularly. The National Environment Agency (NEA) will work with the PWC to either increase the frequency of collection, or provide larger bins. Residents can contact the NEA on our hotline, 1800-CALL NEA (1800-2255-632), or the PWC on the hotline number printed on the recycling bins should they come across any overfilled recycling bins. We thank Mr Kwok and Mr Tay for their feedback. Ong Seng Eng Director, Resource Conservation Department National Environment Agency

  11. Today I finally encountered the wierdest thing in my life this afternoon at about lunch time. I was heading towards Sim Lim Square after exiting ECP. At the cross junction at Bugis, I decided not to edge into the yellow box (because taxi in front suddenly cut lane) but stopped between the yellow box and after the stop line. Then this old lady cross the traffic light as normal. Suddenly, she walk towards my passenger door and opened it! She then ask me if I just now wanna chiong the traffic light???!!! And subsequently sit into my car before I can stopped her. I was strapped in my seat belt and can do nothing more. She ask me to give her a lift to the shop about 100m ahead before the Fu Lu Shou Complex. She also tells me not to think too long as the traffic light has turned green...... Kaoz[sweatdrop] I guess this wasn't her first attempt. "Ok lar, no harm done", I thought. And so I gave her a lift and dropped her off beside the road. Instead of expecting maybe a "thank you", she tell me it is very malu to be stuck after the stop line!!! And she closed the door and head back into the shops... I dunno if any of you have seen the old lady getting into my blue Latio at that time but it was so funny that I can't help but to post it here. Anyway, this is also posted to all those who were at the scene and wondering what the hell happened. No need to guess liaoz. The truth is here. **Please remember to lock your door next time even if you are in Singapore driving in board daylight**

  13. Just around 10.30pm, I heard a loud "BONG" sound and hurried to look out my bedroom window in the direction of my car. Saw this blue coloured car near mine, without the headlight on, driver at the side bending over to pick up something. Instinctively, he looked up, saw me, got into the car and zoomed off. It was either a blue RAV4 or a Daihatsu Terios. I suddenly remembered that it happened a couple of weeks before. His friend staying on the 3rd floor had thrown down a package to him and oh SAI, don't tell me the package bounced off my car and that KNN charbot when he saw me. Tomolo have to check for ding liao To that guy who threw something out the window, you know who you are, if I see a dent on my car, I'm going to give you 2 ding dongs. You better watch out becos Santa Claus is coming to town
  14. From: http://www.asiaone.com/Digital/News/Story/...1211-40649.html X BOX-ED THE video game was so important to these two young boys that they continued playing even when they were punched and kicked by a group of teens. The boys were picked on, presumably for hogging a demonstration Xbox console at the Best Denki store at Ngee Ann City at about 4pm last Tuesday. Their mother, 35, a housewife, had left them in the store and gone shopping. Timmy, 10, and Tommy, 9, were playing Halo 3, a game they didn't have at home. We are not using the boys' real names as they are minors. About two hours later, four teenage boys and a girl approached them. Timmy said: 'The group came up behind us. They didn't ask us to let them play or anything. 'One of them started saying, 'To play, you must press Reset'. 'When he reached forward, I told him, 'Don't press, please don't press.' But his pleas fell on deaf ears. 'We asked them to go away and not to disturb us,' Tommy said. Instead, the boys said the teens started scolding them. There were two other boys at a neighbouring console - a third console was not working - but the group did not pick on them. When the brothers ignored the taunting group, the teens became aggressive. One walked up to Timmy and threw a punch at the boy's right eye. Instinctively, Timmy flailed his arms to protect himself from the golden-haired teen who attacked him. Timmy said: 'I held on to the controller with one hand and tried to punch back with the other.' But Timmy's attacker skipped out of his reach, as Timmy held on to the controller that was tethered to the console. Meanwhile, his younger brother was being roughed up by two other teens. Tommy said: 'They kept pushing me around and saying I took my hands off the controller, but I didn't.' The group decided to leave when Timmy started crying from the punch, but not before one of them kicked the back of the sobbing boy's legs. Timmy retaliated and, this time, he managed to kick back at his attacker. This defiance act brought the group back - they surrounded the two boys and shouted at them. VULGAR LANGUAGE Five minutes after the incident started, the boys' mother returned. She said: 'When I saw the group, I rushed over with my handphone ready to call the police. 'One of the guys kept accusing my son of using vulgar language on them.' Timmy admitted that he did swear at the group because he had been punched. He then pointed out the teen who had hit him. His mother said: 'The guy was hiding behind his friends but he said 'yes' when I asked if he had punched my son. 'I was angry because they shouldn't have laid their hands on my sons.' The teens defended themselves for about 10 minutes. During that time, her boys continued playing the game and didn't speak up. In the end, unsure who had started the quarrel, she made both sides apologise to one another. She then took her sons away to hear their side of the story. She said her sons were fighting back tears and clenching their fists when they told her what had happened. 'I asked them, 'When people beat you, you should do something. You should run away or ask for help. Why did you still continue to play?' But they only shrugged. When contacted, a Best Denki spokesman said that there is no limit to how long a customer can use the demonstration game consoles, and that this was normal in the market. He said: 'As far as we know, most game shops do not stipulate a time frame. 'Should someone hog the game consoles, our staff member will politely seek the cooperation of the gamers to allow other people to use the consoles.' He added that they have not encountered customers who hog the game consoles in their stores as they have 'sufficient' consoles. The spokesman said the 4Dec quarrel was the first time such an incident has occurred. He said: 'Our staff member assisted in calming the commotion around the gaming area and requested the parties involved to call their parents.' The police confirmed that a report had been made about the incident and said that investigations are ongoing.
  15. Anyone know? got any link to news??
  16. Hi all, I've a few appalling experiences after having some food at Ikea Tampines. Now everytime I go there, I can see heaps of rubbish on tables, uncleared plates, food on the floor, serviates flying around. Its like a pigsty! I do remember going Ikea is a nice experience as everyone would clear their tables after they finish their food. This doesn't seems to happen now. It got to a point that I'm truely disgusted by the behaviour of the customers patronizing the place: 1) only 1 poor pathetic cleaner trying to clear hundreds of never ending plates and dirt piles 2) customers complaining to this cleaner for not cleaning their table fast enough 3) best of all.. they see the rest not clearing their tables, they join in as well, leaving their filth for others to clean. Just to let all of your know. Ikea's food area has a long running policy that the customers should clean up when they leave. Do your part, remind those beside your table that they need to clear when they leave. Rgds
  17. Ford was never a popular mass market make to begin with but in the past despite the premium pricing, there were quite a no of focuses and mondeos on the road. went to sg car mart recently and found that the mondeo was taken off the product offering (or sg car mart never update)and the current focus is priced close to fd civic's territory - 70k in comparison the malaysian focus is 15k cheaper than the mazda 3 there! - maybe its the specs or dunno what. nonetheless with the premium pricing, one would expect a small handful of fans to buy their cars - ford is afterall quite a formidable brand name, but of late i noticed............. i have not seen one newly registered ford car, not one in the past one year. it is because of the pricing or has the agent's response to the internet forum saga turned buyers off,
  18. i rmb seeing a lot of these coronas when i was younger. looks very executive and nice, even by today's standards. just find it strange that i seldom see this one the roads and there is not even a single one on sale in sgcarmart. only have the big butt version which is older.. any idea wad happen to most of these coronas in singapore?
  19. Dear all, I took all this pictures of an accident that occur ... How did the accident happened?
  20. now with the onslaught of the budget class premium cars such as the A and B class, the C180, what happened to BMW in this segment, i know they have the 1 series but its not in sg, and the 316 could be a nice proposition for someone who wants a low cost no frills bmw sedan or for those who aspire to own a fine piece of german engineering at low prices. the 316 would also make sense tax wise.
