  1. which wise guy said that poorer families are not as badly impacted by inflation as the rich? [sINGAPORE] Inflation is still not coming down and appears to have hit poorest households hardest in the first half of this year. Policymakers expect inflation to moderate in the second half of the year after June's rebound to 5.3 per cent, but high inflation makes any loosening of monetary policy dicey, even as slowing growth raises the need to. The government now expects inflation in 2012 to come in at the upper half of its 3.5 to 4.5 per cent forecast range. June's consumer price index (CPI) was unchanged from a month ago, but the latest year-on-year jump brings inflation for the first half of 2012 to 5.1 per cent. Inflation's impact on households varies across different income groups, a separate report released by the Department of Statistics (DoS) yesterday shows. Worst hit were the bottom 20 per cent of households, for whom inflation rose from 5.4 per cent in the July to December period last year, to 6.3 per cent in the first half of this year. Inflation for the middle 60 per cent income group slipped from 5.4 per cent to 5.2 per cent, while for the richest fifth of households, inflation eased from 5.7 per cent to 4.6 per cent. DoS emphasised that overall inflation numbers are due to higher imputed rentals on houses occupied by their owners. This does not have an impact on cash expenditures of those who own their homes. Excluding these imputed rentals, inflation was comparable across income groups. But the poorest 20 per cent of households still saw inflation rising most, from 2.6 per cent in H2 2011 to 4.1 per cent for H1 2012. The middle income group's inflation slipped from 4 per cent to 3.9 per cent, while inflation slowed for the top 20 per cent, from 5 per cent to 4 per cent. UniSIM senior lecturer Tan Khay Boon noted that lower oil and commodity prices may help lower income households, which tend to spend a larger portion of income on food. However, the lowest income group also faced higher healthcare cost inflation of 4.3 per cent, compared with the middle and high income households' 4 and 3.9 per cent. "Healthcare cost may increasingly be a burden to the low income group and more assistance in this area may be needed," he said. Housing and transport costs were the main culprits driving up the CPI by a faster-than-expected 5.3 per cent in June from a year ago. This came after inflation had slowed to 5 per cent in May from April's 5.4 per cent. This choppy trend is partly because rebates for service and conservancy charges (S&CC) were disbursed to HDB households in April and June last year but not this year, exacerbating cost hikes this April and June. Still, accommodation cost inflation has been stronger than the authorities expected. "Leasing contracts continue to be renewed at significantly higher rental rates, especially in the HDB segments," the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) and Ministry of Trade and Industry (MTI) said in joint comments yesterday. Accommodation costs sped up to rise 10.8 per cent year-on-year in June contributing 2.2 percentage points of June's inflation, up from 1.8 percentage points in May. Car prices surged from a year ago but lower petrol prices and ERP charges helped slow the rise in private transport cost, from May's 10.3 per cent to 9.7 per cent in June. Excluding accommodation and private road transport (which formed two thirds of June's inflation), MAS's core inflation measure held steady at 2.7 per cent for a third straight month. Sharper spikes in clothing and footwear prices were offset by slower price gains in other segments of the CPI basket. Services inflation slid from 2.9 per cent in May to 2.8 per cent in June, while food inflation slowed from 2.5 per cent in May to 2.3 per cent in June. "The pass-through of wages and other business costs to consumer prices will continue, but at a more moderate pace," MAS and MTI said. They also expect earlier weakness in global commodity prices to dampen pressures on oil and food items in the near term. But UOB economist Alvin Liew thinks the recent surge in soft commodity prices, due to parched weather conditions in key farming regions, may lead to higher food prices in the second half of this year. Barclays economist Leong Wai Ho thinks so too, noting that corn, wheat and soybeans prices are at least 30 per cent higher than what they were at the start of the year. Food weighs 22 per cent in the CPI basket of goods, compared with accommodation's 20 per cent and private road transport's 11.6 per cent. Stubborn inflation implies a "tougher balancing act" for the MAS, Mr Leong says. Already, Singapore's growth has slowed, sparking talk of a technical recession and raising the odds that MAS may ease monetary policy in October. While most economists still expect the MAS to keep policy tight to stem inflation pressures, Mr Leong thinks growth concerns are likely to overshadow inflation, unless coordinated easing by global central banks turns the global economic outlook rosy. Citi economists Kit Wei Zheng and Brian Tan said in a note yesterday that expected near-term inflation of 4 per cent sets the hurdle high but is "not an insurmountable obstacle for monetary easing", given that weaker growth could set the stage for disinflation next year.

  3. I find that generally, a german, or french, or jap, or italian car, etc has the design which tells you they come from that country..... and most of the time, for example, a german car will not look like one from italy / france / japan / korea. Are there any exceptions? Does the new look Hyundai, eg Elantra, still look korean? or more like another country? Somehow, i dont think a german car designer will come up with something which looks like a typical toyota. Or a toyota designer will not do a alfa romeo look.
  4. Recently started to hear a whirling sound when doing hard braking. Any gurus to advise on why? Sounds kicks in when braking hard at high speed of 90kmh and above. 5. CPF, Medisave minimum sum to be increased Published on May 30, 2012 CPF members, who turn 55 between July 1 and June 30 next year will have to set aside a minimum sum of $139,000, up from $131,000 last year. -- ST PHOTO: CAROLINE CHIA CPF members, who turn 55 between July 1 and June 30 next year will have to set aside a minimum sum of $139,000, up from $131,000 last year. The amount was adjusted over the years to account for inflation, longer life expectancies and Singaporeans' rising expectations of their quality of life post-retirement. From July 1, the Medisave minimum sum (MMS) will also be raised to $38,500 from $36,000, a 7 per cent increase. Members will be able to withdraw their Medisave savings in excess of the amount at, or after, the age of 55. The maximum balance a member may have in his Medisave Account, known as the Medisave contribution ceiling (MCC), is set at $5,000 above the minimum sum, which means it would be increased correspondingly to $43,500, from $41,000 previously.
  6. There are talks about the need to reduce the widening income gap between the low income group and the other groups. Such a reduction has its pros and cons to the society. Do the pros outweigh the cons? Or the other way? The real question is - If in order to reduce the gap, the "repercussion" is an increase in the cost of living for most of us, what kind of increase in the COL you are comfortable with, 4%? Or 8%? Or more? If the cleaners or bus drivers get a pay rise, where do you think the extre money to pay them will come from? Bosses' or dierctors' pay freeze/cut? Or thru additional GST on luxurious consumptions eg supercar prices, $1000 facials, $300 social escort, $800 restaurant dining, etc ? Or it willit come from prices for goods/services the consumers have to pay? Will 4%, or 8% increase in cost of living be acceptable to you?
  7. Hi all. Currently on PS3 (225/45R17) and has tracked with them at PG 5 times and about 30 hard laps in total (not counting warm ups/downs). This is over a period of a year and in-between just normal driving for about 15k km since new. Camber is F3.0 and R2.7. The thread depth is still good but some parts are torn and generally very rough. In my recent track day, I can feel they are rather 'oily' just after 3 laps. Back on normal roads they are still as good. So now thinking whether to change them. Hope can get some recommendations on lasting tyres at least like PS3 but with better grip and cheaper. Is it safe to get those 2nd hand ones from Still Racing or AL Tyres? Thanks in advance for your comments.
  8. http://www.asiaone.com/News/Latest%2BNews/...110-320829.html Nine in 10 flats bought from HDB not resold seven years on 2,883 direct-purchase flats were sublet within the two-year period after Minimum Occupation Period completion. -myp Tue, Jan 10, 2012 my paper Housing issues were a focus in yesterday's parliamentary session, with topics such as resale flats and upgrading being raised. In a written reply, the Ministry of National Development (MND) said that more than 7,200 flats which had been bought directly from the Housing Board (HDB) were sold between January 2007 and November last year. The flats, which were sold on the resale market within two years after their five-year Minimum Occupation Period (MOP), formed 9 per cent of such flats that were eligible for resale. The remaining 91 per cent were not sold or involved in any property transactions. The statement, made in reply to Dr Lim Wee Kiak, an MP for Nee Soon GRC, also said that 2,883 direct-purchase flats were sublet within the two-year period after MOP completion. Of these, 971 flats were rented out to Singapore permanent residents over the same period. Senior Parliamentary Secretary for National Development Mohamad Maliki Osman also fielded questions from MPs on whether HDB would consider installing ramps at subsidised cost for elderly or disabled residents. Dr Maliki explained that such a project would not be feasible, due to space constraints along the corridors of flats. There were also fire-safety issues that had to be taken into consideration. But he said residents who want to build a ramp at their own cost can submit a request to HDB or the relevant town council, depending on the type of ramp to be installed. He added that such requests will be evaluated on a case-by- case basis, to ensure that the ramp does not cause "disamenities" to other residents. Providing an update on the HDB's Home Improvement Programme, Minister of State for National Development Lee Yi Shyan said MND will speed up the initiative to cover 160,000 more flats over the next five years. He added that the budget for the programme will also be increased by about 20 per cent. The programme was introduced in 2007 to upgrade older flats and to address maintenance issues. Since then, 5,800 flats have undergone upgrading works. Daryll Nanayakara and Sophie Hong

Put it simple, was driving at playfair carpark and find the driver of the Lancer EX GT leaving the lot. So i stop beside him, wind down my window and ask whether he is leaving. He said yes and i reverse to let him do 3-point turn and drive out of the lot. Suddenly, this blue fiat Doblo GY*325P came out of nowwhere and took the lot. 14. Hi guys, urgent question. Driving 2005 STi which I bought last dec. So far no mechanical issues until tonight. Mostly stock handling with what seems like stock suspension and only upgraded front discs to slotted. When I was exiting PIE (Tuas) to Toh guan rd, the 90 degree left handed sweeper, midway through the corner, I felt the steering wheel very hard to turn. Definitely abnormal. I applied more force and managed to negotiate the turn safely. Lucky I had both hands on the wheel. In the dry I have taken the bend at 20km/h more than what I did just now, with no issues besides some tire chirping. Definitely seems like something is wrong and not that I cornered too fast. The only other time i felt something wrong was earlier today when I did a slower speed corner and felt a tugging feeling on the wheel but it was just a split second so i thought maybe it was the tire. The feeling can be described almost like someone grabbing my wheel and pulling it to the opposite direction. Would be spooky if there were no such things as mechanical issues. Low speed turning of steering wheel is fine, normal effort and not too stiff. No issues or funny noises when parking. Anyone faced similar issues? or can share with me possible diagnosis and cost to rectify? Thanks in advance...

  18. Hard training, good shoes That's the key to get ahead in income race: Gan SINGAPORE - With Opposition parties questioning whether wages have kept pace with economic growth, Manpower Minister Gan Kim Yong said yesterday there is only one real solution. Likening it to a race, he said it was not possible to eliminate other competitors or set rules to disallow others from running faster. Instead, the way to get ahead in the income race is through hard training and with good running shoes. Sustainable income growth was the emphasis yesterday, as four People's Action Party leaders - Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew, labour chief Lim Swee Say and Mr Gan - took on a hot issue at Opposition rallies so far. In a nutshell, they said the key to that sustainability was skills upgrading. Their responses came a day after the National Wages Council (NWC) had recommended a higher total wage increase this year, and on the eve of the labour movement's May Day Rally. And when the Opposition question was put to him, Mr Lim said: "I don't know what they mean. In our case, when the economy does well, when then industries do well, under our NWC guideline, they have to share the gain. "If (the Opposition) have better guidelines, they can issue the guidelines and let the tripartite partners take a look. And from there, we can explain to workers why we feel that our guideline, up to now, is the right way." The NWC's call for higher fixed wages and bonuses comes after it urged caution during the 2009 recession. But it gave a "good recommendation" last year, even if it noted the need to be cautious because the rest of the world had not recovered yet, Mr Gan told Today in response to comments by an Opposition candidate that this year's guidelines have come too late. And the wage recommendation this year is exactly how Mr Lim thinks it should be done: "Higher increase in total wages, not higher increase in built-in wages." The reason is due to the "uncertainty ahead" in Japan, Europe, the Middle East and the United States, which several PAP leaders had cited on Thursday and which Mr Lim believes is why there is no contradiction between the People's Action Party's (PAP) note of caution and NWC's strong wage guidelines. "One is responsiveness to the upturn, share the gain with the workers, and yet ... flexibility in our wage system so that we can respond should there be a downturn," he told Today. As to the overall Opposition charge that the widening income gap and rising cost of living was a result of the PAP, MM Lee said the PAP's policies are "the rising tide". "All boats have risen, but not equally. It depends on your ability, it depends on your diligence, it depends on your educational standards, and the income gap must widen because worldwide it's widening," he said. He cited the competition that China, India and even Vietnam is posing at lower end of the job market, and said Singapore will "just have to upgrade our workers so that they can go on to the middle-level jobs". And in his May Day message, PM Lee said that skills upgrading and productivity is the most effective way "to keep on raising incomes". "I encourage workers to take up the Continuous Education and Training opportunities, master new skills, and benefit from the better-paying jobs that we're creating," he said. Mr Gan also said Singapore must have the right policies to "attract new investments and create more and better jobs". When asked after his rally speech at Chua Chu Kang stadium if the NWC's latest wage guidelines were timed to coincide with the elections, which an Opposition candidate had suggested, he supposed that the council had "very few issues to debate". "So they reach their conclusion earlier and decide to announce it earlier. Because it's good news, it's better to announce earlier so that more workers can benefit from the good news," he added. With additional reporting by Ansley Ng, Ong Dai Lin and Tan Yo-Hinn Taken from Today's :http://www.todayonline.com/Singapore/EDC110501-0000351/Hard-training,-good-shoes
