  2. By Chong Shin Yen HE SLAPPED her so hard that three hours later the redness on her face had not subsided and three distinct finger marks could be seen. Before he hit her, cabby Ang Kim Chui, 59, had shouted at her: "Don't think (that) because you are a woman, I wouldn't hit you." Madam Ng Sie Hwee, 33, a businesswoman, was three months' pregnant at that time. She suffered a miscarriage three days after the road rage incident. Madam Ng told The New Paper after the sentencing: "The doctor told me the first trimester can be pretty unstable and (the miscarriage) might not have been caused by that incident. "But the psychological pressure I felt then might have contributed to it." Ang was sentenced to six weeks' jail after a trial. He is appealing against his sentence. The court heard that Madam Ng had driven her Volvo out of a Toa Payoh Central carpark on April 9, 2008 at about 4.20pm. She was about to turn into the main road when Ang's taxi suddenly swerved into her lane from the right. Meanwhile, the traffic lights farther up the main road had turned red and the vehicles in front of Ang's taxi had stopped. He ended in an awkward spot, with his taxi straddling diagonally across two lanes. Scared of cabby Ang then looked towards Madam Ng and pointed his middle finger at her. Madam Ng could not hear what Ang was saying but she could see that he was talking and gesturing at her, as if scolding her. Madam Ng's mother and her 18-month-old son, who were also in the car, were seated in the rear. When the traffic lights turned green and Ang was able to move his taxi, he deliberately drove very slowly, forcing Madam Ng, who was behind him, to also drive at a slow speed. He then suddenly stopped his taxi, alighted and went up to Madam Ng's car. As he 'looked rather antagonistic', Madam Ng quickly locked the car doors. Ang stood beside her door and accused her of colliding into his taxi. He wanted her to alight. Madam Ng was afraid to do so. But Ang was persistent and after a while, she got out. When Madam Ng examined both cars but found no damage. She was sure that she had not collided into the taxi but Ang insisted that she did. He kept asking her what she was going to do about it. Both could not reach a consensus and Madam Ng asked Ang to leave. That was when he shouted at her and slapped her on the right side of her face. Upset and scared, Madam Ng began to cry. She felt pain on her face and jaw line. She said she would call the police and told Ang not to leave. But Ang sneered at her and said that he was not afraid. He added that no one would believe her account before heading towards his taxi. Seeing that Ang was about to leave, Madam Ng's mother, Madam Leow Boon Tee, 61, ran towards him. She shouted at him and pulled at his sleeve to stop him from leaving. Madam Leow was carrying her grandson in her arms. Ang threatened the elderly woman, saying that he had 'something in his car' that he could hit her with. On hearing that, Madam Ng quickly pulled her mother away. Meanwhile, a crowd had gathered and some passers-by also told Ang not to leave the scene. >> ASIAONE / MOTORING / DRIVERS / OTHERS / STORY Doctor's testimony Ang stood by the road while Madam Ng called the police. But he left before they arrived. Madam Ng went to Mount Alvernia Hospital for a check-up at about 7.40pm that day. She was unable to go earlier as she had to pick her daughter up from school, go to the police station to make a report and send her children and mother home. Dr Ng Kwee Choon, who examined Madam Ng that night, testified that the shape of the red patch on Madam Ng's face appeared as if she had been hit by three fingers. Dr Ng added that the force used on Madam Ng must have been 'quite substantial' as they were still evident three hours after the assault. The court heard that before the incident, Ang had dropped off a passenger and was on his way to hand the taxi over to the driver of the next shift at 5pm in Bukit Panjang. In his defence, Angsaid it was Madam Ng who had dashed towards him and pretended to fall on him, claiming that he had hit her. He also said that the injuries on her face were self-inflicted. Ang left his taxi company four months after the incident. He now works as a driver for a paint company. In his mitigation, Ang's lawyer, Mr Raymond Tan, said that Ang had a clean record in his 30 years as a cabby. Ang's two daughters are working abroad and only his 27-year-old son is working here. In sentencing him, District Judge Wong Choon Ning noted that Ang was the sole aggressor throughout the incident. She added that even if there had been a collision, Ang should not have taken the law into his own hands. Said the judge: "(Ang's) wanton act of slapping (Madam Ng) hard on her face was deplorable and wholly disproportionate..." For voluntarily causing hurt, Ang could have been jailed two years and fined $5,000.
  3. I am asking if there are any die-hard loyal soccer friends? Recently, a friend of mine was happy that his Liverpool is doing well thus posting through Facebook like " Yea, Liverpool 2-0,etc..." Thereafter, the posts got very heated because some of his loyal Man Utd Friends came in and gave very sarcastic comments on Liverpool which is his favorite and supported club....Thereafter, from what i know is that he deleted them away from his FB and i think they are no longer friends anymore...... So i am just wondering whether some MCFs guys over here are also these types of die hard soccer loyal fans?????????

  5. old folks always say that how much material things we own in this life is already "planned" by destiny. i find it to be quite true. there are some people with little education but are successful. e,g Fandi, Zoe, Fann. if you are not destined to be successful, no amount of hard work will help.
  6. have you ever encounter people closing your boot hard? its very worrying as such actions may result in damage to some components such as speakers, rear wiper etc.
  7. While reversing, I stepped too much gas and heard a lot bump. Went down and checked and it seems that the chamber where the exhuast pipe protrude from is dented. So far the drive is ok, didn't notice any difference while driving. Is there any urgency for me to get the exhuast checked out? Any workshop to recommend that repair the exhuast? Thanks.

  9. Hi Starlets, I'm on a Weber. When I'm cornering hard LEFT, with the clutch engaged, the engine will have a very noticeable stutter and jerk, making the subsequent acceleration less responsive. With the clutch disengaged (free wheeling), the engine dies off, which is pretty dangerous cos I lose the power steering. Seems as though the carb is starved of petrol in the float when cornering left. This does not apply if I'm cornering right. Do any of you guys on Webers experience this scenario? Is it due to the orientation of the carb in my car? Your reply is greatly appreciated =)
  10. Below article from Channelnewsasia affrims the prevaling Die Hard Habits of motorists on our roads to date. I think driving licenses are too easily acuired these days as compared to the past, and possibly bad influences from the internet as well as movies depicting glamorous driving stunts like Drifting etc. What should be done to curb such dangerous and inconsiderate driving habits? >> Higher penalties? >> Revocation of License? >> Re-education? >> Revise the Qualifying Factors in Attaining a License? ================================================ Driving over speed limit, beating amber lights top dangerous driving habits By Zhang Tingjun, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 09 June 2009 1836 hrs SINGAPORE : A nationwide road safety survey has revealed that Singapore drivers are less inclined to signal when switching lanes or overtaking, but are more careful when it comes to drinking and driving than European motorists. The month-long survey by AXA Insurance was conducted with more than 500 Singapore drivers, made up of private car owners and taxi drivers. The survey showed that 60 per cent admitted to committing at least one dangerous driving practice. Driving at more than 10 kilometres per hour over the speed limit and beating an amber light topped the list. Drivers were more prudent, however, when it came to drink driving, with 24 per cent saying they do not drink at all before taking the wheel. When asked what would deter them from dangerous driving practices, the top three reasons cited pertained to law enforcement. Personal safety came in fourth, and the safety of others fifth. Another notable finding was that the only dangerous driving behaviour that women are more likely to engage in than men is answering the phone without a hands-free kit or text messaging while driving. Drivers who were married with young children were also found to be more likely to engage in unsafe driving practices compared to those married with older children. Younger motorists between 18 and 34 years of age were also found to be less likely to perceive a breach of safety rules as dangerous driving compared to motorists aged 35 and above. According to AXA, the most surprising finding, however, was that over 75% of those surveyed gave the wrong answer to the question "What is the speed limit on normal roads?" Some did not know, whereas others guessed 60, 50 or 30 kilometres per hour. The correct answer is 50 kilometres per hour. AXA said that going over the speed limit is not only dangerous, it can also be costly when it comes to filing claims. Henri Gurs, CEO, AXA Insurance Singapore, said: "Between an accident at 50 km/h or an accident at 70 km/h, the damages will be more than doubled." According to AXA, accident claims have risen from 13 to 16 per cent over the past four years. - CNA/ms

  13. Hi I just found 3 streams of what looks to be like hard water on my front windscreen. It's definately not paint and I got it whilst parked at an underground car park... must be leaked from the ceiling and can see it landed from the top of the windscreen and run all the way down. Initially, I thought I could remove with a bit of hard scrubbing (using wash sponge and car wash detergent) but it didnt come off. Went to HW DIY shop and bought Oust Descaler yesterday, applied it, left it for a few mins and washed off with sponge and water... it's still there!. Then I was a bit desperate and tried a rough sponge from the kitchen (you know the one use for scrubbing stubborn burn stain from pots and pans), I knew it was going to cause some scratches, so I tested it at the bottom of the windscreen first... after much hard scrubbing , I could only get 50% off but it caused a bit of scratches on the glass as expected so I stopped. At this time... I've left it as is, and seek your help if any bros out there have effective solution to resolve this. The other option is if anyone know which shop I can go to get this problem sorted out. Regards Mike.

  16. Today managed to do some detailing on my ride. So try out this Soft99 wax. Effects not bad, can bring out the warm glow of shine of my 2.5 year car. Wat I did today 1. Wash and shampoo 2. Dry 3. Slap on a thin layer of Soft99 carnauba wax, wait for it to half dry and buff off w MF cloth. Not sure how long the shine can last as I have just slap it on today. Of course my ride cannot compare to Cefiroboy's cefiro kim or Slephygirl's slephy shine, but wat the heck, this pdt is only $12. Avaiable at major petrol station.
  17. Holland V valets to close HDB puts up signs at carpark entrances banning such services By Sumathi V. Selvaretnam THE two carpark valet services in Holland Village, there for years, were told yesterday that they have to cease operations from today. Last night, workers contracted by the Housing and Development Board (HDB) put up signs at the carpark entrances in Lorong Liput and Lorong Mambong declaring that such parking services were banned. An electronic parking system will go up there on Sept 22 to regulate the demand for parking lots, said the HDB. Mr R.K. Vicnesh, 32, who runs the year-old Sakthya Services, said he heard about the ban only yesterday. Before him, the booth had been run by his brother-in-law from 2001. Mr Vicnesh charges motorists $8 to park their car so they can avoid the hassle of circling the area for a lot. His valet service has tie-ups with eight restaurants and service providers in the area, including Splendour Spa, Qi Mantra and Lebanese restaurant Al-Qas'r. Sakthya charges these businesses a monthly fee for their customers to enjoy free valet parking. It also has a tie-up with DBS Bank to give customers free valet parking if they charge $60 or more to their DBS or POSB cards at the outlets in the area. Mr Vicnesh has written to the HDB asking to be allowed to continue his services. He is also collecting signatures from business owners for a petition against the ban on valet services. Both he and the other valet operator, Purple Valet Services, plan to continue operating until further notice from the HDB. Said Mr Ray K., a valet with Purple Valet Services: 'The outlets have paid us, so we will stay.' Both operators said that in the time they have been there, nobody has told them that they needed a permit, or that they were not allowed there, except that Sakthya was once asked by the Land Transport Authority to move its valet booth away from the pavement. It has since operated its booth outside the Haagen Daz cafe without further incident. Shop owners, whose customers are younger Singaporeans and expatriates, expressed disappointment at the ban on valet services. Mrs Sabrinah Hussin, 23, who manages Splendour Spa, said eight in 10 of the spa's customers used the free valet service because 'it is hard to find parking lots here, and they want to be on time for their appointments'. Mr Amos Liew, 27, a supervisor at Qi Mantra spa, is worried he may lose customers if the parking problem worsens. Lebanese restaurant Al-Qas'r managing director Georges Khanashat said the restaurant might have to move if the situation does not improve. Lawyer Leong Kwok Yan, 61, said valet services were needed because parking facilities were inadequate. 'People are always waiting around for a long time, and they jam up the carpark.' Besides the Lorong Liput carpark - where half the lots are season parking ones for HDB residents in the area - visitors to Holland Village used to have another carpark across the road at Chip Bee Gardens, but that was closed down in 2004 for work to build Holland Village's MRT station. 18. Hi all, Got a new Toyota Fielder for about 1 month now. Realised a few issues 1) hard to start when hot. Have to keep the ignition key turned to "start" for a long time to start the car. But when cold, it starts quickly. Does anyone with Toyota Axio experience the same problem? 2) No power Not sure if it's because I'm not used to a CCVT gearbox? Used to be using mostly manual gearbox. Or if I'm not used to the "ECO" mode? Coz everytime when I depress the accelerator, it revs (got power) then very quickly within a few secs, it'll drop to low RPM and the car will be "cruising" but thats still at very low speed. It's like suitable for driving in the neighbourhood. If I depress more, then engine will roar and the power will come in. But I'm just not used to hearing so loud engine noise but yet feel the power isn't really transferred to the gears. On some autogearbox cars, when the car revs, you can feel the pickup like a manual car. But this toyota...not sure if it's the design or all 1.5L autobox are like that....or it's because it's economical... Any comments?

  20. What is so difficult to open an account for her mother? Take the application form from OCBC, fill in the details, bring to the nursing home and do the signature/thumbprint, submit to the Bank! Use the cheque as the initial deposit. Next day, go to ATM to withdraw out $299, leaving $1. When OCBC tries to recover the monthly service fee from the account, just ignore OCBC and ask them to sue the 99yrs old lady. AUTOMATICALLY the bank account will surely be closed, without her wasting her further time to personnally go down to close it. So HOW difficult can the above exercise be? Why make it so hard? Andy Ho Thu, Jul 03, 2008 The Straits Times MY GRANDMOTHER, Madam Lim Hong, received a letter dated April 29 from the Central Provident Fund (CPF) Board which contained a cheque for growth dividends in the amount of $300. The validity of the cheque is 90 days for encashment with any OCBC branch office. The last day is stated as July 28, both on the cheque and the payment advice. My grandmother is now 99 years old, bedridden and staying in a nursing home. I have two affidavits from the management that she has appointed me to handle her private matters. Armed with the cheque, the two affidavits and her IC, I went to one of the OCBC branch offices. The officer told me that the bank was willing to encash the cheque but could not do so after checking with the CPF Board. They made the phone call from their back office while I was waiting at the counter. It seems that I had to visit the CPF office personally to get an authorisation from them in order that the cheque could be encashed. I had already spent two hours on this matter. If I were to visit the CPF office and then OCBC again, I would have to spend at least another three hours on such a trivial matter. With much regret, I am returning the original cheque with copies of the two affidavits and a copy of my grandmother's IC. While I appreciate the kind gesture from the CPF Board on rewarding our senior citizens who have indeed built up this country, I cannot help feeling disappointed at the way the board is handling the administration of this matter. On behalf of my grandmother, I thank the board for recognising the generation of solid citizens who have played a vital role in making Singapore what it is today. Juliet Hasselblad (Ms)
  21. I was in the process of applying for something important. Then, one part of the application required a guarantor for an amount of somehere 70,000 sgd. I had an unpleasant shock... because the staff in charge didn't inform me of that and gave me only like 3 days to find a guarantor for that amount. So, I checked out my phone list to find someone. One cousin agreed to be my guarantor. But, on that evening before the day we went down to the office, she backed out and excused herself due to last min recall from office. Another friend didn't reply my sms once I asked him if he could be guarantor. It was a frantic search.... then finally I stopped... because I realised that when I needed help, many people don't seem to be there. It seem like people are no longer as helpful. When u need help, they are somehow unavailable. When times are good, they appear. I needed help badly and also because the application was for something very impt (shall not elaborate what it is). My point in this thread is, have a look at who are your real good friends when you are in sh*t, because during good times you will never be able to see their true colors. You cannot tell who you can depend, until sh*t happens. Be wise and be generous only to those who willingly stand by you. Its true also, people look after their a$$ first... then their buddies. So look after your own a$$ 1st, even if your buddy is in sh*t.

  23. Can't help feeling they deserved it. When you park inconsiderately and block others, you are just asking for trouble. For full story: from: http://newpaper.asia1.com.sg/news/story/0,...,160948,00.html?
  24. Hi Bros, My laptop is IBM X61. At Windows Explorer, if I right-click "Properties" on C drive, the laptop will tell me that I have used up >126Gb of disk space. However, if I were to select all the folders and files in C drive and right-click "Properties", the total file size is <71Gb. So, there is a discrepancy of about 55Gb of disk space. It can't be due to System Restore, since I have disabled it. How do I recover the missing disk space? Thanks
  25. http://singaporeseen.stomp.com.sg/singapor...nt.jsp?id=11450 See the picture of the car and the motorcycle. I hope this will serve as good lesson for those who attempt to speed by the car on the left. I personally encountered 2 times involving the motorcycle and me. Taking left bend turn and cutting me on my left. And I only see them when they appear on my front windscreen. Touch-wood, everything is fine in the accident mentioned and in my case too. Not all and everyone will be lucky. Have a safe and merry Xmas.
