  1. Let's see if u can remember http://www.classicandperformancecar.com/fiat/tipo/5633/forgotten-hot-hatch-quiz-can-you-remember-them-all
  2. About 2 decades ago, the term bread and butter car model used to be refering to car with engine capacity of 1.0L or lesser, and mid size family sedan are the Corolla, Sunny, Mazda 323, Civic, Jetta and such. Sub 1.0L rides make up some 12 - 15% of our passenger car population, and proved to be popular for those looking at a simple point A to point B personal transport tool. Some of the hot model include: Suzuki Swift Sedan Suzuki Wagon R Toyota Starlet Nissan March Subaru Justy Subaru Vivio Daihatsu Charade Daihatsu Move Mitsubishi Toppo Town Bee Mitsubishi Pajero Mini Fiat Uno Seat Ibiza Sales of sub 1.0L rides start to fall by the end of 90s / early 2000, due to the ever rising COE premium (and no thanks to the merger of Cat 1 & 2 COE into Cat A in May 1999), as well as the better acceptance of Korean model (Accent, Getz, Atos, Rio, etc.). IIRC, the last 1.0L (non-turbo) model sold in Singapore is the Hyundai Atos, which at it lowest price point, can be had for <S$30K. T.B.C.
  3. http://www.sgcarmart.com/new_cars/newcars_...p?CarCode=11161 At $98,988. Got sedan and hatchback
  4. Hello all, I am currently looking for a 2nd car, and it has to be a hatchback. Reason being I am staying in a landed, and my car porch is already 'choped' by our sedan car. So I will have to park directly outside my gate (double yellow lines along the road outside my house). I am quite interested in Suzuki Swift, although I am not dismissing Honda Jazz and Toyota Yaris or Auris. Hopefully car enthusiasts here can share their views/experiences on them. No BMWs, Mercs, Audi, MINI please. Cannot afford them as I just need a simple car to get me and my kid from point A to point B. Cheers
  5. http://www.autoblog.com/2015/06/25/ford-focus-rs-345-horsepower-video-official/#image-1 When Ford revealed the new Focus RS at the Geneva Motor Show, it promised it would deliver "well in excess of 315 horsepower." It didn't say exactly how much that would come to, but now it has. On the eve of its dynamic debut at the hands of Ken Block at the Goodwood Festival of Speed, Ford has confirmed that its new hot hatch will pack 350 metric horsepower. Those reaching for their calculators will find that works out to 345 horsepower by our standards. The power output is backed up by 324 pound-feet of torque, capable of being boosted up to 347 for up to fifteen seconds at a time. Those figures come from a retuned version of the same 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbo four as the one available in the Mustang, but produces over ten percent more power thanks to a new turbocharger, upgraded intake and exhaust, and a larger radiator. All that muscle will be channeled to all four wheels through Ford Performance's new all-wheel drive system with dynamic torque vectoring, launch control, and selectable drive modes, including a Drift Mode that (as you can see from the video below) allows the hot hatch to get more than a little sideways. Ford still isn't saying what those specs will translate to in terms of measurable performance figures, but as far as output goes, things are looking pretty good. The 30th Ford RS model already packs more power and torque than the new Honda Civic Type R (306 hp, 295 lb-ft), Volkswagen Golf R (292 hp, 280 lb-ft), Subaru WRX STI (305 hp, 290 lb-ft) or the Nürburgring-conquering Renault Mégane 275 Trophy-R (271 hp, 266 lb-ft) and Seat Leon Cupra (276 hp, 258 lb-ft). It even respectably holds its own against the more upscale BMW M235i (320 hp, 330 lb-ft), Mercedes A45/CLA45 AMG (355 hp, 332 lb-ft), and Audi RS3 (362 hp, 343 lb-ft). Whether it'll outshine them all in real-world conditions remains to be seen, but we're looking forward to finding out whenever Ford deems fit to drops those performance stats on us.
  6. http://www.sgcarmart.com/news/review.php?AID=795&PN=3 Key Points : - Compared to the 3 hatchback, there's less space in the cabin and a 250-litre boot (including underfloor storage) of the 2. But it's adequate for four Asian adults of average height, with decent legroom made possible by the significant 80mm increase in the 2's wheelbase to 2,570mm. - It's not fast, of course, with only 115bhp to play with from its 1.5-litre engine. But the kerb weight is just over a tonne, and the SkyActiv four-cylinder is hooked up to a responsive six-speed automatic gearbox (the old model uses a mere four-speeder), complete with little paddle-shifters and a well-placed Sport switch. - Hitting 100km/h from a standstill takes 10 seconds flat, which is less impressive than how the car behaves in corners. The steering, which is light on initial turn-in, becomes firm and positive as it negotiates the bend at speed, with the vehicle steadily following through. - The positivity of the steering, along with the stability of the chassis, the 'continental' confidence of the suspension, the bite of the brakes and the predictable grip from the 185/60 R16 tyres, makes the 2 a cooperative companion on the circuit. Not bad at all for a city car destined to live its life in the city, far away from any racetrack. - The engine is energetic and willing, all the way to 6,000rpm. It's clearly heard when hard at work, but it operates smoothly and there's no untoward vibration through the bulkhead. When the 2 is just cruising along, it is as calm, controlled and well-insulated as the 3 hatchback. - Mazda's latest fun-to-drive 2 will be introduced to Singapore in the first quarter of next year.
  7. Just out of curiousity, if you had to choose all over again, what type of cars will you pick? This is of course choosen in your own current situation (be it expanding family, chasing a new chick etc...). It should also be within your own means...otherwise everyone will just pick 458 italia spider.

  10. One of the most iconic automotives of all times - the Volkswagen Golf - is celebrating its 40th birthday. We take a trip through the memory lane with a brief history of each generation. The Golf is a statement of progress, reflecting some of the most advanced technologies by the Wolfsburg automaker during each era. Replacing the aged Beetle, the Golf Mk.I saw daylight in 1974. But unlike its 'predecessor' who had a rear engine, rear-wheel drive layout (and likewise most of the other cars in the market), the Golf had an innovative transversely front engine driving its front wheels. The second Golf was introduced in 1983, together with a slew of technologies such as regulated catalytic converter, anti-lock braking system (ABS) and power steering. Also, for the first time, the Golf could be ordered with an all-wheel system. With the introduction of front airbags, Golf Mk.III heralded a new era of safety. Major advances in the body construction also significantly improved crash safety. Later in its lifecycle, a convertible (Golf Cabriolet) and an estate (Golf Variant) were also added to the family. The Mk.IV Golf saw the debut of ESC, and is the first to receive a Haldex clutch - termed Golf 4MOTION. Later on in 2002, the first direct injection (FSI) enginer was fitted to the hatchback. Also introduced was the top-of-line R32 hot hatch which was capable of a 250km/h top speed, which was also the first to feature the revolutionary dual-clutch gearbox (DSG). The Mk.V Golf adopted laser welding for its bodywork, which resulted in 35 percent increase in torsion rigidity. In terms of safety, side airbags were offered as an option for the first time - on top of six standard ones. The Golf also gets a tall list of equipment, such as new four-link rear suspension, seven-speed DSG, bi-xenon headlamps, panoramic sunroof - as well as the world's first twincharger (TSI) in the 2006 model. Volkswagen continued to work on the safety aspect of its icon with advances in its body rigidity, and the efforts paid off with a five-star EuroNCAP safety rating. More TSI engine variants were offered alongside the turbodiesel (TDI) engines. Park Assist - the automatic parking system which garnered much limelight - was also introduced in the Golf. Like its predecessors, the latest Golf had a keen interest in fuel economy and driving dynamics. A hundred kilograms were shed in the Mk.VII Golf, improving the fuel efficiency by as much as 23 percent. The turbodiesel Golf TDI BlueMotion sets the benchmark for efficiency, claiming a figure of 31.25km/L. In line with global trends, electric variants of the Golf - e-Golf and plug-in hybrid Golf GTE - were added to the family.
  11. Japan automaker Honda is keen to extend its street racing heritage by showcasing the latest Civic Type R. Albeit in concept form, the car looks all ready for production - and we won't be surprised if it does. Rumour has it that the new Civic Type R will get a 2.0-litre force-fed engine churning out figures north of 280 horses. And if this is true, it will be the first turbocharged Honda Type R. Other than the spolier tail lights, we expect much of the features on this concept to head on to production. More details will only come in when the car is unveiled in full glory at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. Meanwhile, we have these trio of pictures to drool on.

    C1 Swiss & Me

Citroen's new city car - the C1 - has made buzz online when it was revealed (in pictures) before its official debut at the upcoming Geneva Motor Show. The funky looks and character are hard not to fall for, especially for the younger audiences. Now, the French automaker has chosen to use this chic supermini to pay tribute to the motor show - by wearing the national colours of Switzerland. The city of Geneva has always been considered one of the world's most liveable. That means it should be the perfect place to launch a car of such playful character. Dubbed 'Swiss & Me', the C1 Concept car has a two-tone effect - red roof and white body, with the Swiss flag proudly worn on the roof. Works are not limited to aesthetics - the C1 Swiss & Me has a central tailpipe, wing extensions and large wheels to hint at its performance. Now imagine if our streets are filled with cars of a similar concept - but wearing the national flag of Singapore instead. How cool is that?
  13. http://dai.ly/x16y194 Unlike vehicles with integral body and frame construction, the BMW i3 has a horizontally split LifeDrive structure consisting of two separate, independent modules - one for the Life module and the other for the Drive module. The structure of the LifeDrive architecture represents the basic construction of the BMW i3. The central element of the Life module is the Carbon Fibre Reinforced Plastic (CFRP) passenger compartment. This element is fixed to the aluminium Drive module, which houses all the drive and chassis technology.
  14. Automotive breeds are diversifying at an increasing pace. But that did not seem to affect hatchbacks, which has gained a large fan base over the years (especially the hotter, souped up variants). Besides warming up to their chic, youthful image, people like them for their practicality and the ease of driving (and parking) one. Both the A3 and 116i are some of the easiest ways to gain entry into the respective marques (Audi and BMW). But of course, in the local climate, each of these hatchbacks will still cost upwards of $180k. The A3 is the newer entrant to the segment, and naturally look fresher of the duo. Audi has once again worked its wizardry, with help from the LED lamps, to create a facet that is distinctive and appealing to the senses. The 1 Series' styling may have raised a few brows when it first set foot on our grounds. But the recent facelift has pulled off an aggressive and sporty stance. We, especially, like how it looks from the rump. Audi's 1.4-litre chunk on the A3 puts out 122bhp and 200Nm of torque. Mated to a dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox, the drive is decidedly smooth. The bimmer's 1.6-litre, in comparison, edges out with better power figures - 136bhp and 220Nm of torque to be exact. Although the 116i utilises a more 'conventional' eight-speed gearbox with single-clutch setup, cog swops never felt lacking. Instead, we genuinely like how intuitive it felt on the sprints and in overtaking manoeuvres. Next, the interior. BMW's cabin is a no-frills example of how a premium interior should be like. Though we have to give it to the A3 for its simplistic, almost minimalist cabin, which looks and feel more modern than the 116's. Meanwhile, browse through the rest of the pictures and decide for yourself who is the winner of this duo.
  15. Honda's family hatch has been one of our nation's favourites. Now it seems that the time is ripe for it to transcend into the next generation. So how will the evolution fare? The third generation of the Fit will come in a total of four variants - the 13G, 15X, hybrid, and RS. The 13G is fitted with a 1.3-litre DOHC i-VTEC, mated to either a five-speed manual or CVT (with optional paddle shifters). On paper, Honda claims that the 1.3G is capable of returning 26km/L, with part credits to its new CVT gearbox. The 15X comes with a 1.5-litre under the hood, with a choice of six-speed manual or CVT gearbox. The new engine utilises Honda's direct injection technology for better performance, and is said to be 10 percent more powerful than the one it replaces. The hybrid, as always, packs the most amount of tech gizmos. It features a new one-motor i-DCD Sport Hybrid system that is coupled to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. When moving off from stationary, the system engages EV mode to improve fuel efficiency. Three driving modes are available - EV Drive, Hybrid Drive and Engine Drive. The hybrid claims an impressive fuel economy of 36.4km/L. If you asks us, the interior of the new Fit looks simple, yet appealing. The hybrid will get an snob gear stick that looks like it was taken from a spaceship - and we like this special treatment. The standard petrol-driven Fit, on the other hand, will have a redesigned fuel tank that gives more space to the cabin. From this picture it seems that rear legroom has been enhanced by quite a bit. Then, there is the RS variant for the boy racers. While we are sure it wouldn't outrun any of the hot hatches out there, it sure looks the bit. Of course, there is the question of whether the RS will even land on our shores. That said, the rest of the range should make their debut in Singapore somewhere in the mid of next year. Let's keep our fingers crossed.
  16. It is an expected move from Volkswagen - a more potent, all-wheel drive variant to top the Golf range. But now it has got almost 300bhp from the redeveloped 2.0-litre lump taken off its GTI stablemate. Is this VW's hottest hot hatch yet? 2.0-litre. Four cylinders. 296bhp. 380Nm. 5.3 seconds. These are the figures from the latest Golf R. In comparison, the Mk7 GTI has 220bhp and 350Nm of torque. That is almost 80 more horses in a similarly-sized hatchback. While the weight of the new R is not disclosed yet, we expect the Haldex four-wheel drive system to put a toll on the R at the scales. Then, the fifth generation of the AWD system promises up to 100 percent torque transfer to the rear axle - all done in fraction of a second via the Haldex coupling with help of an electro-hydraulic pump. Some cool tech there. To us, the previous gen Golf R was mind-blowing enough with 256bhp and 330Nm of torque. But then, we bet it was only right for VW to increase the power figures as it is the natural way to showcase its progress - as with any car manufacturer. Then, we would gladly have the twin-centre pipes (which we thought was the iconic symbolisation of the R) over the quad pipes, any day, anytime. Let's keep our fingers crossed that this wouldn't be a mere figure-boasting exercise.
  17. It seems that Asian automakers somehow have the ability to manufacture pretty interesting super-mini cars. Take a look at the Mitsubishi Mirage, for example. It seems like Mitsubishi tried to shrink the car so that it can just fit into the A-segment. However, with Honda, things seem to change a little bit as the Japanese automaker seems to be lean towards practicality. You see, instead of competing in the A-segment as well just like the Mirage does, the Honda Fit (also known as the Jazz here) plays in the B-segment and it's quite big too. Carrying a chunky boot capacity of 335 litres, I think the Fit is a leader in its class. However, if you are satisfied with the boot capacity of the current generation Honda Fit, you may feel happier to know that Honda is already preparing the next generation Honda Fit that carries a total of 400 litres when it comes to bringing along your stuffs. Yes, you heard it right, it's the 2014 all new Honda Fit that's in the works! The car will make its first bow to the public of its home country by the end of 2013, after which it will also go global. But thanks to these accompanying Japanese scans, we're not going to have to wait that long just to know how the car will possibly look like. These scans manage to show us some parts of the car, including the interior and possible colour choices - two of which seem to be very bright neon colours - that Honda will be offering for its latest Fit. While the car is supposed to play in the B-segment still, it has grown a little, by 60mm (that's around a little above 2 inches). So, the car now measures 3,960mm. Well, don't be disappointed if you're keen on practicality that comes from a smaller size. The smaller the size of the car is, the easier it is for you to manoeuver through traffic, right? But, the good news is that passengers will have more spacious legroom, thanks to the wheelbase that now has a length of 80mm. This growth in size is probably partially due to the new architecture the car is being built upon. I believe it is this new architecture that Honda will also use in order to produce its very first SUV/crossover in the B-segment. Well, honestly, the car looks modern and is also prettier than the previous generation Honda Fit, although it does look kind of boxy in a few spots. The car also borrows a transparent nose that we've come to know from the Honda Civic hatchback of the previous generation. Now, let's get to the most important part of a car - under the hood. With the 2014 Honda Fit, we'll have the privilege to choose between a 1.2-litre and a 1.4-litre VTEC petrol engines. And, if we choose the latter, we'll also be able to choose a six-speed automatic transmission. Yet, for those who live in the European continents of this world, a 1.6-litre i-DTEC diesel engine that produces 120bhp is also an available option. Actually, I would say that there's still one engine that Honda will probably offer with its 2014 all new Fit. That would be the hybrid engine with a total capacity of 1,500cc in addition to a power output of 110bhp. This engine is previously used by the Civic as well. However, this engine will only see the light of day provided that the seemingly hybrid car pictured in the scans is actually a hybrid car indeed. Despite a bigger size than its older brother, the car maintains a light weight. This is possible thanks to the fact that the head and block utilises aluminium alloy. So, with its bigger size that makes for more spacious legrooms, do you think that the 2014 All New Honda Fit is still practical enough for you to be interested in? If you feel like sharing your thoughts, the comment section below may be your best friend.
  18. Believe it or not, this is the refreshed 2014 MY Alfa Romeo MiTo. The little Italian hatchback is said to have an updated grille and headlights. However, I can't seem to spot any difference with the current model. Well, perhaps it is time for me to go for an eye checkup. What is more obvious is that the Impression variants get a new set of 15-inch alloys. There is also a new colour, Anthracite Grey, added to the range, bringing the exterior colour choices to ten. Interestingly, the 0.9-litre Turbo TwinAir engine has found its way under the hood of the facelifted MiTO. The sub one litre engine churns out 105bhp with an accompanying 145Nm of torque. Such figures match those of a 1.5-litre naturally-aspirated unit. The 0.9-litre MiTO is said to go from 0 to 100km/h in 11.4 seconds before hitting a top speed of 184 km/h. The engine is pretty environmentally friendly as well. It returns an average fuel consumption of 23.8km/L while emitting CO2 at a rate of 99g/km. The TwinAir engine is a multiple award winner as well. It bagged the "Best New Engine 2011", "Best Green Engine 2011", "Best Sub 1-Litre Engine" and the "International Engine of the Year 2011" overall award. More recently, it won the "Best Green Engine 2013" award.
  19. Are you an owner of a VW Scirocco? Does yours look any cooler than this one? This tuned VW Scirocco has been spotted in China quite recently. But why the VW Scirocco? Well, it's probably because in China, they say that this particular model from the German automaker Volkswagen is often fancied by Chinese young men with tight pants. So, while the body of the car retains its originality
  20. Borneo Motors has announced its intention to bring in the 1.6-litre Toyota Auris hatchback. In its second generation, the Auris was first displayed publicly at the 2012 Paris Motor Show in September. Shortly after, it went on sale in Japan, Australia, New Zealand and Europe. A hatchback body style has been missing from Toyota's lineup in Singapore for a long time. So, the arrival of the Auris will certainly freshen up the Toyota showroom here. Measuring 4,275mm (L) x 1,760mm (W) x 1,460 mm (H), the Auris is slightly shorter in the X,Y and Z directions than one of its main rival, the Hyundai i30. The 1.6-litre Auris features Toyota's Valvematic technology. Valvematic is a further development of the Dual VVT-I system by adding lift and duration control to the inlet valve variable timing. The engine is mated to a MultiDrive transmission, which is Toyota's fancy language for CVT. With 132bhp and 160Nm on hand, the Auris sprints from 0 to 100km/h in 11.1 seconds. This is slightly faster than the i30's 11.5 seconds performance. The arrival of the Auris should not raise any cause for concern for Singapore's favorite hatchback, the VW Golf. Still, the Auris is an important model for Toyota Singapore as it ushers in the new face of the brand with its all-new frontal design.
  21. [extract] In preparation for the launch of the all new A-Class in Japan on 17 Jan 2013, Mercedes has come up with an anime staring the stylish hatchback as promotional material. This is great marketing strategy as it customizes according to local taste. This is similar to MacDonald
