  1. Asbestos found on St John's Island, more than half the island sealed. SINGAPORE - Debris containing a potentially toxic mineral was recently found on St John's Island, leading the authorities to seal off more than half of the island as a safety precaution. Traces of asbestos had been detected on April 16 in construction debris such as roof tiles around the island's campsite, lagoon and holiday bungalow area, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) announced at a media briefing on Monday. http://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/asbestos-found-on-st-johns-island-more-than-half-of-the-island-sealed
  2. I have been using a plastic water kettle for almost a year. Is there any health risk? ie, is the plastic leaking any toxic chemicals into my water? There are metal ones available, but cannot see the water level easily, so I prefer plastic. Also, even if accidentally touch the surface, I will not get scalded.
  3. I read and felt disturbed. I read with great concern. Social media has its pros and cons. Humans do all sorts to get quick results and fix for one reason or the other. Bangkok clinic draws 100 men a month for penis-whitening service Health authorities disturbed as Thailand pioneers penis whitening laser service Thailand is probably the first country in the world where services are available to lighten the skin tone of male genitalia. Health authorities, however, have expressed worry and warned people about possible adverse impacts from such treatments. "The skin of the private parts is sensitive. Such laser services may cause irritation, allergies and inflammation," Health Service Support Department deputy director-general Dr Thongchai Keeratihuttayakorn said yesterday. He added that such services would do more harm than good. "What if your skin becomes spotted?" he asked rhetorically. Thongchai said he had never heard of such services being available in other parts of the world. He also pledged to encourage the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to check if equipment used in such services had already been approved. "If not, the service provider will be liable for punishment," he said. Laser services for skin lightening are nothing new in Thailand. But a social media post about lightening male genitalia has become the talk of the town. A Facebook user, who goes by the name of "Atittayapa Photiya", posted a message about the services. She described herself as working for the Lelux Hospital. "New services. Reduce pigmentation. Make penis whiter. No pain. No recuperation needed. Let's tag people who should do it," the post said. The hospital has confirmed that the services are available and insisted that they are not dangerous. A patient who had used the service said he "loved" laser facial treatments and had been keen to try the service when he found out it was available. "And I am impressed with the results," he said on condition of anonymity. "I will complete the programme of five laser treatments." According to AFP, Lelux Hospital's genitalia whitening services have attracted about 100 men a month and they cost around $650 for five sessions. Urologist Dr Kampanat Pornyoskrai said laser treatments on genitalia might have different results depending on each particular person. "Usually, the male genitalia is darker than other parts of the body because of androgen," he said. "No other medicines can change that." He said lasers could be used to whiten faces and might work as well for genitalia for some people. "But before you go for it, study the bad points of laser treatments first," Kampanat said. http://www.asiaone.com/asia/social-media-aroused-health-authorities-disturbed-thailand-pioneers-penis-whitening-laser?xtor=EREC-16-4

Has anyone really benefited from this product (e.g. lower blood pressure, cholesterol), is black garlic really that different from normal garlic? Price difference is huge.
  6. Time again to do some health screening...I was checking online to see how the price is like currently...almost all package that is a little more comprehensive(I really mean just a little more comprehensive or probably it is one which most of us should go for)cost at least SGD400.... Altought I don't spend this money every month....Just once in one or two years....But I still feel the pinch...This make me wonder how can the poor afford this kind of money for health screening ??? Does the MIW have anything for the poor ?? SGD400 could have let let someone survive for at least a month.... Anyone here have any idea if health screening affordable or available to the poor???

  11. Have seen this for quite a number of weeks now. This is at Holland Drive Market, a store with a Japanese sign and lots of pictures and Japanese words. Always a large crowd of elderly people inside, listening to some sales talk. Also, there would be people outside waiting for their turn to listen to the talk. What exactly are they trying to sell to the elderly? I hope it is not a scam. See the video. https://youtu.be/83K2icQExfo
  12. Home > Breaking News > Singapore > Story Feb 10, 2009 Johor idea draws flak By Salma Khalik , HEALTH CORRESPONDENT A SUGGESTION by Health Minister that Singaporeans might want to consider staying at a nursing home across the Causeway in Johor where it is much cheaper drew flak from two oppostion MPs in Parliament on Tuesday. Workers' Party chairman and Non-Constituency MP Sylvia Lim said the suggestion was 'quite a bad indication of affordability of our own health care services here, and also a reflection of our national values'. Fellow WP member Low Thia Kiang (Hougang) asked: 'Is the Minister suggesting that Singaporeans who cannot afford medical treatment or step-down care here should now consider such facilities in Johor?' If so, is the minister 'outsourcing the Government's responsibility to provide affordable health care service to Malaysia', he asked. This riled Mr Khaw Boon Wan. 'I'm not saying that if you are poor I will put you in an ambulance, send you across the Causeway to a Johor nursing home. That is not what I said and please don't twist my words,' he retorted. In fact, the Johor option is not for the poor, who are heavily subsidised in Singapore. 'Everybody can afford health care in Singapore whether acute care or long-term care,' said Mr Khaw. The suggestion was aimed at middle-income families who need to pay for the care themselves. It gives them choice. 'I just wanted to point out to Singaporeans that there are options like this,' Mr Khaw said. The cost of nursing home care will always be more expensive in Singapore, as doctors and nurses are paid more, and construction cost is also higher. Since many people visit the elderly in homes only on weekends, it makes little difference whether the person is housed here or in nearby Johor. It's part of globalisation and this is already happening with Singaporeans going to Bangkok for Lasik to treat short sightedness and Americans and Russians coming here for treatment. It is also not something that should, or can, be prevented, said the minister. Singaporeans are already crossing the causeway for cheaper petrol and medicine. 'By allowing the flexibility of consumers walking across the Causeway... they benefit. I don't think we should constrain them from doing so.'
  13. Had they started burning forest in Indonesia. Its only begining of February 2014 ..... yahoo news: Return of haze feared as Indonesian forest fires reach ‘alarming conditions’ Hazy days may return to Malaysia after it was reported today that hundreds of hectares of forest in Indonesia's Riau province have been ravaged by fire, reaching "alarming conditions", according to the Jakarta Post. The English-language daily reported that a lack of rainfall made fire-fighting efforts more difficult, and thin haze has already blanketed Dumai and Pekanbaru, Riau's capital. “Firefighters experienced difficulties extinguishing the flames as the area is dried peatland,” Riau's Meranti Islands regency forestry agency head M. Murod was quoted as saying. Fires have been burning since last week in the regency, and have spread to Rangsang Island and Tebingtinggi Island, destroying about 200 hectares of land. Murod hoped Jakarta would help the efforts by arranging for cloud seeding to avoid a repeat of the haze which struck neighbouring countries. In June last year, schools in Singapore and Malaysia were shut and state of emergency declared in several areas in Johor after the Air Pollution Index (API) crossed 700. An API rate between 0 to 50 is considered as good, 51-100 as moderate, 101-200 as unhealthy, 201-300 very unhealthy, and above 300 as hazardous. In the past, the dry season, between May and September, was blamed for the haze, as well as on Indonesian farmers who did land clearing for the planting season. The haze last year had also sparked a war of words between Jakarta and officials from Malaysia and Singapore, after an Indonesian minister said Sinaporean and Malaysian companies were to blame for forest-clearing activities. Murod said he could not identify the plantations involved in the latest fires. “The blaze is getting bigger and bigger inside the plantations. It’s difficult to identify. I have just received a report on losses suffered by residents,” he said, as reported by the Jakarta Post. Bengkalis regency's Disaster and Firefighter Agency head Mohammad Jalal meanwhile did not rule out land clearing activities for the latest fires. “We have often warned about avoiding fire in peatland. In the current hot weather and strong winds, the dried peatland could easily burn and it’s difficult to extinguish,” he told the Jakarta Post. – February 3, 2014. link: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/return-haze-feared-indonesian-forest-fires-reach-alarming-043157236.html We are now enjoying North-East wind condition and should the wind direction changes, we will be affected ... 14. Top 20 per cent consume 35 kg of added sugar a year. http://www.todayonline.com/singapore/scratch-win-contest-launched-get-sporeans-reduce-sugar-intake SINGAPORE — The next time you buy a drink with less sugar at a Kopitiam or pick up bubble tea with reduced sugar level at Gong Cha, you could stand a chance to win prizes such as vouchers from electronics, shopping mall and supermarket brands. The Health Promotion Board (HPB) announced today (Oct 11) that it is launching a Scratch & Win contest with the aim to reduce sugar intake among Singaporeans. The contest, in partnership with coffee shops, food courts, hawker centres and food kiosk chains, will be held across nearly 800 outlets. HPB aims to have 1,000 participating outlets on board the contest by December. Sweetened drinks have been identified as a source of empty calories, contributing 200 calories or about 10 per cent of the average daily caloric allowance, the HPB said. Individually, Singaporeans currently consume, on average, 20 kg of added sugar per person per year, with the top 20 per cent consuming approximately 35 kg of added sugar a year. A major source of sugar is sweetened drinks - 60 per cent of Singaporeans consume two or more sweetened drinks a day

  16. First time heard of this deadly plague.... Yahoo news: China 'seals off' town after man dies of bubonic plague A Chinese town has been sealed off and 151 people placed in quarantine since last week after a man died of bubonic plague, state media said Tuesday. The 30,000 people living in Yumen in the northwestern province of Gansu are not being allowed to leave, and police at roadblocks on its perimeter are telling motorists to find alternative routes, state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV) said. Other reports said that earlier this month the 38-year-old victim had found a dead marmot, a small furry animal which lives on grasslands and is related to the squirrel. He chopped it up to feed his dog but developed a fever the same day. He was taken to hospital after his condition worsened and died last Wednesday. "The city has enough rice, flour and oil to supply all its residents for up to one month," CCTV added. "Local residents and those in quarantine are all in stable condition." CCTV said authorities are not allowing anyone to leave, although a previous report by the China Daily newspaper said "four quarantine sectors" had been set up in the city. No further cases had been reported by Tuesday. Plague is categorised as a "Class A infectious disease" in China, a report by the official news agency Xinhua said, "the most serious under China's Law on the Prevention and Treatment of Infectious Diseases". Bubonic plague is a bacterial infection best known for the "Black Death", a virulent epidemic of the disease that killed tens of millions of people in 14th century Europe. A more recent pandemic, the Modern Plague, began in China in the 1860s and reached Hong Kong by 1894, the US Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says on its website. "Over the next 20 years, it spread to port cities around the world by rats on steamships," it says. "The pandemic caused approximately 10 million deaths." Primarily an animal illness, it is now extremely rare in humans. Modern antibiotics are effective in treating plague, the CDC says, but without prompt treatment it can cause serious illness or death. "Human plague infections continue to occur in the western United States, but significantly more cases occur in parts of Africa and Asia," it adds. Cases occasionally emerge in China. A villager who found a dead marmot and ate it with other residents of Litang in Sichuan province, in the southwest, died of the disease in September 2012, a newspaper run by the health ministry reported. Chinese media have not specified whether the latest victim's dog fell ill. link: https://sg.news.yahoo.com/china-seals-off-city-man-dies-bubonic-plague-102913437.html

  19. Local distributor Nature's Farm recalls health supplement for men SINGAPORE - The Health Sciences Authority (HSA) on Monday issued a health advisory, alerting members of the public against consumption of male performance enhancement drug "VIA.X For Men". Nature’s Farm Pte Ltd, the local distributor of the product, has recalled the product from the market. HSA said in a press statement that it had found "undeclared potent ingredients in the product" and is advising all consumers who may have the product to stop consuming it immediately. "VIA.X For Men" claims to contain only natural ingredients, including Red Algae Peptide Hydrolysate, Pycnogenol, L-Arginine and Zinc Gluconate. However, samples of the product were tested and found to be adulterated, containing undeclared potent ingredients of sildenafil and propoxyphenyl sildenafil. "Sildenafil is used to treat erectile dysfunction and should only be used when prescribed by a doctor. Its usage without proper medical advice and close supervision can cause serious adverse reactions such as decreased or loss of vision and hearing, low blood pressure and other cardiovascular events such as stroke and myocardial infarction," HSA said in the statement. "In addition, sildenafil is not suitable for patients with some medical conditions including certain heart problems or patients who are taking heart medications such as nitrates." Propoxyphenyl sildenafil is a chemically related compound of sildenafil. It is not approved for use as a medicinal ingredient and could cause adverse effects which are similar to those of sildenafil. HSA said that they have not received any reports of adverse reactions associated with the product. Consumers who have taken the product should seek medical attention if they are feeling unwell or concerned about their health. Members of the public can contact Nature's Farm at 6744 1865 if they have any questions regarding the voluntary recall. - See more at: http://yourhealth.asiaone.com/content/local-distributor-natures-farm-recalls-health-supplement-men#sthash.AcyO9pEk.dpuf Source: Asiaone.
