  1. Being exposed to high levels of air pollution from traffic may raise the risk of autism, according to a study done by Heather E. Volk, assistant professor of research at the University of Southern California. Autism is a diverse disorder marked by problems in communicating and interacting socially. The study analyzed data from 279 children with autism 245 children without the disease. It also made use of information from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and did traffic modelling to find out the amount of traffic-related air pollution at each location where the children lived. Exposure to particulate matter and nitrogen dioxide was taken into consideration as well. According to Volk, children exposed to higher levels of traffic-related pollutants during pregnancy or during the first year of life were at increased risk of autism compared to children exposed to the lowest level. The link between pollution and autism is not certain. However, some pollutants have been shown to inhibit the activity of an important gene in early brain development. Expression of this gene has been found to be reduced in autistic brains. Air pollution can also cause inflammation, and that may play a role, Volk commented. Some families prefer to stay near the town center where bus terminal is located and car traffic is heavier for convenience sake. Perhaps it may not be such a good choice after all.
  2. The mayor of Paris, Bertrand Delanoe, launched a proposition to the French government to ban old vehicles from the city to improve the air quality and reduce noise pollution. In his proposal, cars over 17-years old would not be allowed in Paris. Trucks and buses more than 18 years old and motorcycles built before 2004 would also be banned. To help poorer residents of Paris to upgrade to newer vehicles, the Socialist Party mayor suggested a "cash-for-clunkers"-type program. If approved, the ban will take effect in the second half of 2014. The proposal is part of a plan to cut air pollution in the city by 30% by 2015 and to turn Paris into a low-emission zone. French officials report about 43,000 annual death caused by poor air quality. Pierre Chasseray, a spokesman for a non-profit organization, commented that only 3% of the vehicles in France are above 17-years old and therefore the impact from the ban would not be great. Other critics say that the plan should focus on cutting down the use of diesel fuels instead. Collectors of vintage and classic vehicles would not be happy with the proposal as well. Other elements of the plan include reducing local speed limits from 80km/h to 70km/h and imposing a tax on heavy vehicles travelling in the city center. The reduction of speed limit does not really make sense to me as most cars would not be travelling at the highest gear ratio at 70km/h, which is no good for fuel efficiency. It seems like the only sensible suggestion is the tax on heavy vehicle.
  3. What's the cheapest way of testing battery health? I know for sure multimeter doesn't work. Yesterday was my second time with flat battery. I did 'feel' a slightly slower crank about a month ago and this time round I've decided to test the batt with multimeter religiously. And even when it went dead, it was registering about 12.2v and 11.9v with ignition turned to accessory. Both times I've monitored the indicators on the batteries. Two different brands. And they have obviously failed me. I'm aware of battery load testers but they don't come cheap. I am doubtful of those $20 battery health meters (cigarette plug style found in autobacs) - or do they work? I do carry jumper cables in the boot but I really dislike the idea of having to wait around for some kind soul to help. Are there any other ways to test?
  4. I have noticed that most of these products carry petrol distillates, that's why it's recommended that usage be done in well ventilated areas. Was about to buy a 3* product on polish abt a year back but it carried a health hazard warning. Recently saw it at another store with new packaging and the warning has been reduced to something more subtle, that it contains petroleum distillates. This triggered me to do more search. Further search online got me this ' Car Wash, Car Polish
  5. Most would know that diesel engine exhaust emissions are more dirty compared to petrol engines. Even though diesel engines have gotten progressively cleaner in recent years due to strict emissions standards, the World Health Organisation has announced recently that they have uncovered sufficient evidence to link diesel fumes with cases of cancer in human beings. The World Health Organisation which operates under the United Nations says that diesel fumes are a known cause for lung cancer and can increase the risks of bladder cancer. Carcinogen is the term used for describing any substance that is an agent directly involved in causing cancer. As mentioned above, diesel engines are progressively getting cleaner. This is largely attributed to the usage of particulate filters, of more precise direct-injection technologies and also to the widespread use of ultra-low-sulphur diesel in some countries such as the United States. But this is not the case in many developing countries. There are still a lot of vehicles, mostly commercial vehicles, in those countries that use old fashioned diesel engines that use pre-chamber type indirect injection. To complicate the matter, the World Health Organization estimates that these vehicles will take a very long time to be replaced with cleaner ones. Chairman of the working group, Dr. Christopher Portier, explained that the scientific find was rather compelling and the group

  11. I came across an interesting article online on cancer sniffing dogs, you can refer to an example at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/3682722.stm. Another article also states that a trained Labrador retriever was more accurate than doctors in diagnosing bowel cancers, as high as 98% compared to 66% of human doctors . Do we have this technology in Singapore? That can drastically bring down medical costs I believe

  19. The United Kingdom Health Protection Agency has come out with a report stating that vehicle windscreen wiper water may be the cause of many of the cases of Legionaires' Disease in England and Wales. This startling discovery was made after some research was made from medical case records. The research was conducted after a questionnaire taken from people infected revealed that most of those that caught the disease spent a lot of time in cars and vans in industrial areas with the window open. So don't even think of trying to drink wiper wash water if you suddenly find yourself in a desert without any drinking water. It may be the cause of your death instead of heatstroke. The HPA also found out that adding windscreen wash fluid will kill the bacteria. This was discovered after the above questionnaire, where a pilot study conducted by the HPA found that traces of the Legionella bacterium were present in one in five windscreen washer reservoirs that did not have windscreen wash fluid in it, but none of those that did. Legionnaires' Disease is a rare but potentially deadly condition which is caused when the Legionella bacterium is inhaled and causes pneumonia. Stagnant, warm water is the ideal breeding ground for the disease. According to the HPA, the Legionnaires' Disease does not spread from person to person but is present in water environments and is breathed in when it gets into the air in fine particles or mist. People suffering from Legionnaires' disease usually have fever, chills, and a cough, which may be dry or may produce sputum. Some also have muscle aches, headache, tiredness, loss of appetite, loss of coordination (ataxia), and occasionally diarrhea and vomiting. Some end up dead as it is fatal in around 10

  21. Reasons for sleeping and waking up early. Evening at 9 - 11pm: is the time for eliminating unnecessary/toxic chemicals (detoxification) from the antibody system (lymph nodes). This time duration should be spent by relaxing or listening to music.. If during this time a housewife is still in an unrelaxed state such as washing the dishes or monitoring children doing their homework, this will have a negative impact on health. Evening at 11pm - 1am: is the detoxification process in the liver, and ideally should be done in a deep sleep state. Early morning 1 - 3am: detoxification process in the gall, also ideally done in a deep sleep state.. Early morning 3 - 5am: detoxification in the lungs. Therefore there will sometimes be a severe cough for cough sufferers during this time. Since the detoxification process had reached the respiratory tract, there is no need to take cough medicine so as not to interfere with toxin removal process. Morning 5 - 7am: detoxification in the colon, you should empty your bowel. Morning 7 - 9am: absorption of nutrients in the small intestine, you should be having breakfast at this time. Breakfast should be earlier, before 6:30am, for those who are sick. Breakfast before 7:30am is very beneficial to those wanting to stay fit. Those who always skip breakfast, they should change their habits, and it is still better to eat breakfast late until 9 - 10am rather than no meal at all. Sleeping so late and waking up too late will disrupt the process of removing unnecessary chemicals. Aside from that, midnight to 4:00 am is the time when the bone marrow produces blood. Therefore, have a good sleep and don't sleep late. TAKE CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH Live Life Without Limits! AND PASS THIS EMAIL TO WHOM YOU CARE The top five cancer-causing foods are: 1. Hot dogs Because they are high in nitrates, the Cancer Prevention Coalition advises that children eat no more than 12 hot dogs a month. If you can't live without hot dogs, buy those made without sodium nitrate. 2. Processed meats and bacon Also high in the same sodium nitrates found in hot dogs, bacon, and other processed meats raise the risk of heart! disease . The saturated fat in bacon also contributes to cancer. 3. Doughnuts Doughnuts are cancer-causing double trouble. First, they are made with white flour, sugar, and hydrogenated oils, then fried at high temperatures. Doughnuts, says Adams , may be the worst food you can possibly eat to raise your risk of cancer. 4. French fries Like doughnuts, French fries are made with hydrogenated oils and then fried at high temperatures. They also contain cancer- causing acryl amides which occur during the frying process. They should be called cancer fries, not French fries, said Adams . 5. Chips, crackers, and cookies All are usually made with white flour and sugar. Even the ones whose labels claim to be free of trans-fats generally contain small amounts of trans-fats. BRAIN DAMAGING HABITS 1. No Breakfast People who do not take breakfast are going to have a lower blood sugar level. This leads to an insufficient supply of nutrients to the brain causing brain degeneration. 2. Overeating It causes hardening of the brain arteries, leading to a decrease in mental power. 3. Smoking It causes multiple brain shrinkage and may lead to Alzheimer diseasie. 4. High Sugar consumption Too much sugar will interrupt the absorption of proteins and nutrients causing malnutrition and may interfere with brain development. 5. Air Pollution The brain is the largest oxygen consumer in our body. Inhaling polluted air decreases the supply of oxygen to the brain, bringing about a decrease in brain efficiency. 6. Sleep Deprivation Sleep allows our brain to rest. Long term deprivation from sleep will accelerate the death of brain cells. 7. Head covered while sleeping Sleeping with the head covered increases the concentration of carbon dioxide and decrease concentration of oxygen that may lead to brain damaging effects. 8. Working your brain during illness Working hard or studying with sickness may lead to a decrease in effectiveness of the brain as well as damage the brain. 9. Lacking in stimulating thoughts Thinking is the best way to train our brain, lacking in brain stimulation thoughts may cause brain shrinkage. 10. Talking Rarely Intellectual conversations will promote the efficiency of the brain ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The main causes of liver damage are: 1. Sleeping too late and waking up too late are main cause. 2. Not urinating in the morning. 3. Too much eating. 4. Skipping breakfast. 5. Consuming too much medication. 6. Consuming too much preservatives, additives, food coloring, and artificial sweetener. 7. Consuming unhealthy cooking oil. As much as possible reduce cooking oil use when frying, which includes even the best cooking oils like olive oil. Do not consume fried foods when you are tired, except if the body is very fit. 8. Consuming raw (overly done) meat also add to the burden of liver. 9. Veggies should be eaten raw or cooked 3-5 parts. Fried veggies should be finished in one sitting, do not store. We should prevent this without necessarily spending more. We just have to adopt a good daily lifestyle and eating habits. Maintaining good eating habits and time condition are very important for our bodies to absorb and get rid of unnecessary chemicals according to 'schedule.' DO TAKE CARE ABOUT YOUR HEALTH..................
  22. Yesterday afternoon had lunch - Nasi Bryani at Houngang 24hour AJ Restaurant The waiter had the mutton bryani on a green plastic plate and a laminated brown paper/plastic then they reheat it together in a Microwave oven THIS IS DANGEROUS because the green plastic plate and a laminated brown paper/plastic are not meant for microwave cooking (reheating) and may release dangerous chemicals as a result I took the drink and left the food, obviously I paid up before I left Although some of us have our IP in other countries, that does not mean we are not in Sillypore.
