  5. Researchers at A*STAR have developed a system to help car drivers navigate junctions safely by voicing out cautions. The system in the car will get signals from sensors installed at junctions that will inform drivers of any approaching pedestrian or vehicle. A*STAR’s Institute for Infocomm Research (I2R) said the system can detect the speed of all vehicles at the traffic junction and warn drivers of impending collision. It is now on a year-long trial -- from February 2014 to end-2014 -- to study the feasibility of using advanced technology to enhance traffic junction safety. Currently, only a pair of sensors is installed along Jurong East Ave 1 and Toh Guan Road. Dr Jaya Shankar P, programme head of intelligent transport systems at I2R, said: "This system can potentially go into the next generation in-vehicle unit. The next generation systems, based on connected vehicles that allow car-to-car and car-to-infrastructure communications, would be fitted with the appropriate radios and even screens for drivers to view, and we believe that this would actually benefit the drivers and could be potentially fitted into this system." 9. How to be a Money Savvy Teen in SG with these 8 Simple Tips! May 14, 2017 Source : http://accdenteach.blogspot.sg/2017/05/how-to-be-money-savvy-teen-in-sg-with.html Being a teenager in Singapore is no joke. Almost every activity on our beloved little red dot requires money! So many things to do but so little money - What should I do? Fret not! Want to “Yolo” without breaking the bank? Here are our eight great tips on how to manage your money in Singapore! 1 : Start habit of saving spare cash when young We have heard too many stories of fellow teens overspending their allowances – spending on whatever takes their fancy with nary a thought. I suppose you think that it doesn’t matter right? Since Mom or Dad will always 'bail' you out if you're short of cash. Such thinking is wrong and dangerous as your parents will not always be with you in your life to save you from your financial mistakes!. Cultivating a habit of savings is a good virtue and will set you on the right way in life. How to do this? Read on in our next tip. 2 : Establish a steady income We don’t mean to give up your full-time studies now but to find opportunities to gain a steady source of income. It could be helping out at your parent’s food stall. Or helping your siblings in exchange for some allowance from your parents. Or perhaps you could offer your services to help clean your neighbour’s car every week! If you have a bicycle or motorbike why not take up delivery (UberEats, Deliveroo) while you are at it. You can keep yourself fit while earning money! The point is to obtain a source of steady income so that you will rely less on your parents and be more independent. It will also set you well for adult life and help you to discover where your interests are! 3 : Set a budget and start a savings account Now with a steady source of income it is important for you to set a budget each month. Hopefully with this means of steady income you will understand that money does not come easily and has to be earned. And with this virtue you can perhaps resolve to set aside a fixed portion of your income every month. It also pays to set goals while setting a budget. Want to go for a bikepacking trip to Thailand? Start saving for it every month! 4 : Learn to recognize wants and distinguish them from needs. This is one of the most important virtues to learn at a young age. Sure that brand new Samsung S8 might be all so desirable. But a XiaoMi does the same functions for so much less money! Identifying what you need from what you want will help you save so much money! 5 : Make use of your student pass! You might not know this but being a student entities you to some great deals in Singapore. KFC for example offers student meals on weekday afternoons and evenings. Various restaurants such as Jacks Place and Manhattan Fish Market also offer special meals for students! Running low on mobile data? Make use of your student pass and sign up for the youth mobile plans to get free extra data at Starhub! Yes don’t hide away your student pass with the dorky photo. Your student pass is useful in Singapore! 6 : Have fun working together with friends to avoid spending! Peer support is the biggest motivator among teens. Instead of competing to see who can spend more – compete to see who can save more! Anyone can spend but it takes someone with real passion and determination to save real cash in Singapore! Pair up with your friends to get that one for one deal! Want to watch a movie? Go to Johor Bahru! You can watch 2 movies for the price of 1 in Singapore! 7 : Reduce, Reuse, Recycle! Wise old adage and still so applicable in our time. Don’t feel down getting those hand-me-downs from your older sibling. Rejoice for you can save up on those textbooks for your next big bike packing trip! Have some old junk lying around – don’t just throw them away. Put them up on Carousell! People might be willing to pay to offload your unwanted items off you! 8 : Start retirement savings as early as possible. It is never too early to think about retirement. The truth is that the earlier one starts saving the earlier one can retire. Starting a savings plan from young, even depositing small amounts each month can eventually lead up to a sizable and secure retirement amount well into your future!
  10. I am trying to drill a hole in the ceiling with a normal power drill and concrete drill bit. No matter how hard i tried, the drill bit cant penetrate beyond the "skin" later (which is about 5 mm). The concrete is very super hard. Anybody have the knowledge on this ?
  11. Anyone in the car industry can help? Without going thru a car dealer or middle man. I know sometimes car middleman is useful. But my father wish to try to do the sales himself, I am helping him because my father says the sales will free up some cash for his Hainan holidays and other future holidays. He just retired early this year. My father is trying to sell away his fully paid Subaru Forester 2008, to one of his friend. There is no loan on the car. The buyer has personally applied for a bank loan. I am not sure what type of documents the bank will issue when the bank loan is approved. I also want to know, when will the bank issue the cheque/funds in my fathers' name or account. Or when will the money be disbursed so that the car ownership can be effected. Anyone works in bank or car dealers who know the steps?

  17. In June 2006, Koua Fong Lee was driving his pregnant wife and other family members home from church when he says his 1996 Toyota Camry accelerated on its own and the brakes stopped working. Lee struck another vehicle, killing three people in that car. A Minnesota jury convicted Lee of vehicular homicide and the native of Laos was sentenced to an eight-year prison sentence even though there was no evidence of alcohol or drugs involved in the incident. Fast-forward to over three years later, and Toyota's recall woes for unintended acceleration are casting doubt on the jury's decision to convict Lee. But while the 1996 Camry isn't involved in the current recall, some 1996 models were recalled for unintended acceleration. Further, ABC News says that the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received at least 17 other complaints of unintended acceleration in 1996 Camrys with comments like "couldn't stop" and "had to crash into a tree and another car to stop." Brent Schafer, the lawyer for Lee, has asked for a new trial, and for his client to be set free until the time of a new hearing. The prosecution in the case told ABC News that it supports examining the 1996 Camry involved in the crash to determine if the car is at fault instead of Lee. For its part, Toyota has chosen not to comment to ABC News due to the fact that there could be a future lawsuit brought against the company.

  21. Dear Forumers My friend urgently needs to hire a private investigator (PI) whom is reliable, honest and efficient in the surveillance work. PI may need to attend court Assignment - collect evidences against inconsiderate neighbour. Neighbour has been "torturing" friend's household for years with secondhand smoke, etc. As parents getting weak by the day, friend tried suggesting to neigbhour to smoke at the common staircase landing, etc. instead. Neighbour denied anyone has smoking habit in their house. However, from then onward, neighbour becomes "creative" and smoke through any open windows of friend's house at odd hours of the day eg. bathroom when someone is bathing, bedroom during wee hours of the night... Friend also exhausted all relevant government agencies to arrive at the same advice - get evidences! If anyone has experience or knows of a licensed PI whom fulfills the above-mentioned criteria and charges reasonably, please pm me the contacts. Friend wary of engaging PI from the web or classified ads as no slightest idea on how to shortlist a good one. Would also appreciate constructive suggestions on how to resolve the nuisances caused, how to select a reliable PI, etc. Kindly do not suggest closing all windows, move house. Thanks lots!
  22. Dear all, Over the last few months, I am encountering some heel pain problems. The pain is most severe when I just wake up in the morning. It occurred on both legs. It is most painful in the morning and as the day passes, the pain eases off, but not completely. Then the torture repeats itself again the next morning. This has been going on for about 6 months. Is it a symptom of some medical issues? I don't want to die yet. Anyone encountered this problem before? What is your solution? Please kindly advice. Many thanks.

  25. So after nine years and a bit, my Little Red Riding Hood, aka Honda Civic FD, is coming to the end of its life. Well the end of it's COE anyway, which means I can either cough up the money to renew this little piece of paper or explore new cars. Given that I can get back almost 10k for this baby, it's really been giving me sterling service, and I should try to get another car. So here comes the hunt: I have set myself a budget of around 130k but if I can spend less, that will be even better. i.e, with my car thrown in, my outlay should not extend 120k. First decision was to forgo renewing the COE. Second one was whether I should go for a 2nd hand one. Given the high prices I see for 2nd hand examples, a first hand car seems to be the way to go. What are the things I really need, and what are the niceties then? Needs: Reliability is paramount. No 'characterful' cars, a euphemism for unreliable. So most likely a Jap car, that is actually made in Japan, maybe a Korean one, or perhaps a Merc if they are made in Germany and not somewhere else. Not too low slung - I need easy enter and egress for my mum. Versatile seats: Folding rear seats, the ability to carry large objects will be very good. Fuel economy: Given the high oil prices, this will be a good thing. Enough power to merge with traffic. I don't need a speedster, but I don't really want to worry about having a heart attack every time I need to join traffic and there's a rather steep slope outside my home and I need to merge with fast moving traffic there. I also go on the North South Highway every now and then, so something that doesn't struggle on it will be nice. Niceties: Original leather seats Red color Quick turning radius Low turn to turn ratio SUV - high sitting position and hey, I haven't owned one before, but it was fun to drive Front and back cameras BT capability So what have I identified: Right at the top of my list right now is the Honda HRV, the authorised dealer (AD) version of the Vezel that has been taking the local market by storm. What are the plus points: - Jap made - very creative interior - SUV style - low FC - smart interior with decent soft touch materials abounding - many charging points, USB and other touches Negatives: - not as solid feel as a conti car - 130hp might not be enough compared to my older FD - CVT transmission So moving on, I have also tried a whole bunch of other cars. The main issue is that none, yes, none of the cars have everything I want. Each has their own pros and cons.. Mazda 3 & 6: Plus: - nice Conti feel - good handling - conventional 6 speed auto - soft touch materials abound - Jap made negatives: Heavy 3 combined with a 1.5l engine in the 3 doesn't help can't help comfy in the 6 somehow servicing can be an issue given that the new dealers aren't really setup for so many new customers US long snout styling ? reliability a little low slung rear legroom Corolla Altis Plus - Proven track record - Borneo servicing - Good FC - Improved looks compared to the older one - decent legroom - solid bidding process Negatives still looks bleah.. plastics aren't in the same league as the Mazda or Golf not too many nice features inside Hyundai Elantra - sleek looks - plenty of soft touch materials - decent legroom - lower price Negatives - bidding tiers means you aren't so sure if you will get your car Conti offers: Golf Pluses: Solid build, lots of soft touch materials in the cabin Good acceleration Negatives Tight legroom at the back Suspect gearbox Audi A3 Sportback An expensive version of the Golf, with similar pros and cons A3: The sedan is made in Hungary, and the Merc CLA is also made in the same country, and will cost 30-40k more than a Golf. It's hard to see how one can opt for this, even though most conti cars, especially the bigger brands are known for safety, and a solid metalwork. But servicing is not as easy, since these companies are much smaller than Borneo Motor or Kah, and the cost of repairs, spares and even basic servicing might be more. IMHO The A3 is a value for money car. The A4 is significantly more costly. Almost got this car. The build quality is very solid, the engine is quite powerful, rear legroom is actually quite impressive. It uses a more powerful 1.4t, has a bit more room and is made in Germany. It uses a wet clutch design. The cabin has more features but it's about 20k more. The soft touch materials, the gear shift knob, oh so wonderful.. It's the cheapest of the three marques. A Merc Cla will cost another 20k more for example. The big German brands are now more vague on the origin of their cars. For example, the popular C class Merc is made in South Africa, and not long ago, the previous model gave more issues than expect for this marquee brand. BMW 216: The 216d was IMO a better drive, more torque and instant response, greater urgency and the rear seats were sliding with a three fold capability. The cabin soft touch materials were also better. The diesel is noisier but inside you hardly hear it. The view out of the cabin was nice too as you sit higher. But the 216d is about 10k more and I wonder about the reliability? The CLA is made in Hungary, and the BMW 3 series is also made in South Africa. The B Class was a solid build car with space, ergonomic and good safety features. The engine specs are also impressive, but it's about 30k more than the HRV. Ideally a Honda HRV with a nice 1.8l engine or maybe that new 1.5 turbo will be superb! Even the hybrid version has enough ommph. Pity the authorised dealers aren't bringing it in. So basically I have sort of narrowed it down to two and a half: The HRV is the car with the stuff that checks most of the list. Well made, highly functional, the last Jap made car in the Kah showroom (the Jade has dubious origins China then shipped to Japan?) Spacious, and well designed. At 112k this month, it's also within my budget by car. BUT, is it powerful enough, and a thought, planted in my mind, ala Inception - YOLO and buy something you can like.. So there's plan B... The Merc B class. About 20-30k more.. It's safe, almost as functional, spacious - you will be really surprised how big it is inside. Easy for my mum and I to get inside. The engine is decent, and will lap up the North South nicely. The third option is a bit out of my budget.. BMW 216i Drives well, very torquey and the soft touch build quality.. wow Functional too. Diesel is cheap to run, but I don't know how maintenance will be. A friend said something which resonated with me: "Seems that my friends who own BMWs tend to swear at rather than swear by the car" Any comments ? Cheers
