  16. from Yahoo: 'Leftover women' in China face tough choices in looking for love SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Xu Jiajie has gone on countless blind dates and to numerous match-making events over the past five years in search of a husband. At 31, the baby-faced office worker from Shanghai is under enormous pressure from family and friends to get married. But the right man is hard to find, she says, a big issue for urban, educated and well-paid Chinese women in a society where the husband's social status is traditionally above the wife's. "My parents have introduced every bachelor they know," said Xu, who earns double the average wage in Shanghai. "Half of the bachelors I met are quiet and never go out. Outgoing men don't need blind dates." As couples celebrate the "Qixi" festival on Tuesday, the Chinese equivalent of Valentine's Day, Xu and millions of women like her face stark choices as long-held ideas about matrimonial hierarchy run up against economic and social changes sweeping the world's most populous country. The term "shengnu" - directly translated as "leftover women" - was coined to refer to professional women who have not married by their late 20s. "Chinese people often think males should be higher in a relationship in every sense, including height, age, education and salary," Ni Lin, who hosts a popular match-making television show in Shanghai, told Reuters. "This leads to a phenomenon in which A-grade men marry B-grade women, B-grade men marry C-grade women and C-grade men marry D-grade women. Only A-grade women and D-grade men can't find partners." link: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/leftover-women-ch...-054109510.html I had seen their Match-Making shows, some are very pretty chio bu and is just that the competitions for men is very high in China...

  21. look around your neighbours and watch the FT coming with infested luggages. Once open, it crawls without knowing and multiplys as it moves on. Just seen one family threw away all mattresses with a bold written note not to be recycled. Those renting their flats or rooms out, make sure this will not happen. Once the bugs are hiding inside the PVC trunking, you have to vacate the house for pest control. Bugs dont live on high temperature. Beware even you are traveling, staying in hotel and back home, watch those bags lying around on the carpet/floor. Always air your bags under sun before storage.
  22. http://www.businesstimes.com.sg/archive/th...regions-highest Published June 28, 2012 Income inequality here seen as one of the region's highest 9 in 10 polled can't tell which income bracket they're in By lim wei sheng IT'S a head-scratching paradox. While Singaporeans perceive income inequality levels here as being one of the highest in the region, nine out of 10 don't even know which income bracket they belong to. According to a March 2012 survey of 10 Asia-Pacific cities by Fidelity Worldwide Investment, of the 90 per cent of Singaporeans who do not know which income bracket their household belongs to, 68 per cent underestimate and 22 per cent overestimate it. This leads to the poorest households in the first decile perceiving themselves as situated in the third decile, while those in the wealthiest 10th decile locate themselves within the more modest sixth decile. These misperceptions have implications for investment decisions, according to Betty Ng, director of investment communications, Asia Pacific at Fidelity. She said that overestimation can lead to overspending, while underestimation may cause investors to lose returns due to excessive risk-aversion or risk-taking. Income inequality fears remain very much alive, though. Based on responses by the 507 Singaporeans surveyed, a typical household needs to earn an average of $2,662 in monthly pre-tax income to be qualified as low-income, and earn an average of $12,140 to be qualified as high-income. The difference between what constitutes low and high income is the widest for respondents in Singapore, suggesting that respondents here perceive the greatest inequality in their current incomes. Three in four Singaporeans are also expecting widening spreads in income levels over the next 10 years, comparable to the regional average of 76 per cent. Only 42 per cent of Singaporeans believe that their household income would improve in the future, compared to 49 per cent for all 10 cities. Nevertheless, Singaporeans foresee a more optimistic future for their children, with 91 per cent of respondents believing that their children would attain middle or high income status when they reach their 40s. Indeed, 35 per cent of self-classified low-income respondents predicted that their children would attain high income status, while this proportion was 67 per cent for self-classified high-income respondents. Based on data from the Department of Statistics, average monthly household income in 2011 stood at $9,618, with income in the fifth decile standing at $7,032 while income in the 10th decile reached $27,867.
  23. While browsing through the search looking for an answer to a motoring question, I was very surprise to see there are many advice or information provided that are either slightly off or grossly wrong. Fortunately, I have been driving long enough to realized some of the information are incorrect. I feel we should check before we post critcal information. other members especially those with their 1st car may get lots of craps in their car without knowing it.
  24. Hi I'm asking to see if anyone has experienced driving a Toyota Alphard in Japan (specifically in Hokkaido would be good). As we're headed there in June, I'm curious about how different the model is compared to the version we get here in Singapore... I need as much luggage space as possible, and as it is, the local version's last row slides forward just enough that I can load the luggage for the six of us.... I'm wondering if the seat configuration (2-2-3) and "configurability" is similar.... Thanks in advance!
