  2. [News] Parking charges here too low, says expert -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Prof Barter, who is from the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy: 'Even a doubling of CBD parking prices would not be outrageous by international standards. Even at $600 per month, it would still be cheaper than in many comparable cities such as London, Hong Kong and Tokyo,' he said. The season parking charges of $300 to $400 a month in the CBD here 'do not cover the actual market real-estate value of the space occupied by parking'. Full report in today's ST ------------------------------------- Huh? What about COE and wages? How did this FT become a Prof and hired by LKY's school?

  12. Lately, we have read a lot about FTs here in Singapore, either behaving obnoxiously, or arrogantly toward the Singaporean lot. They are all here mainly for economic reasons - be them Indianese, Chinanese, Pinoy, or Angmoh. There is not so much of such 'hate' news on our fellow Malaysians, or Indons though. Now, instead of shelling these FTs with even more flak .......... On the eve of OUR National Day, I would like you to hear our national pledge, something that you could learn to appreciate and eventually understand one day, on why racial and religious tolerance and harmony had always been the cornerstone of our nation building in this tiny island city state. Do remember that we had nothing to start with and people round us did say that we won't make it ... but we did. We fcuking did it!!! So my dear FTs, just please listen ..... as originally penned by the late Mr. S. Rajaratnam: We the citizens of Singapore Pledge ourselves as one united people Regardless of race, language, or religion To build a democratic society Based on justice and equality So as to achieve happiness, prosperity And progress for our nation God Bless!
  13. Man Utd to launch IPO here Posted: 16 August 2011 2144 hrs SINGAPORE: English Premier League football champions Manchester United is planning a US$1 billion initial public offering (IPO) in Singapore by year-end and according to the International Financing Review (IFR), Morgan Stanley is among some banks likely to win the IPO mandate. The region has become an important growth area for the loss-making club, which has nearly two-thirds of its 300 million fans in Asia. A report earlier this month had said the Glazer family, which controls the club, was looking to sell as much as 25 per cent in an offering. The IPO of a globally recognised brand such as Manchester United would be a coup for Singapore, which has been competing with Hong Kong for international listings. According to Reuters, Singapore's IPO proceeds for the first half of this year have reached $7.1 billion, but that is eclipsed by Hong Kong's $13.4 billion. -CNA/wk
  14. Blonde & woman driver http://www.heraldsun.com.au/lifestyle/the-...6-1226103341664 The $1m car crash (it involves a blonde, five very expensive cars and Monte Carlo) A parade of some of the world's most expensive cars turned into a demolition derby after a driver scraped her $370, 000 Bentley against a $111,000 Mercedes S class. The woman's 2.7 tonne beast then went on to plough into a $207,000 black Ferrari F430 before crashing head-on into a Porsche 911 worth $118,000 and a $207,000 Aston Martin. The total value of the cars involved in the bingle is $1.02 million. The driver and her two passengers were circled by hundreds of tourists after the pile-up, unable to open their car doors. The cost of repairs is expected to reach around $60,000.

  17. As we know, our overprice properties are highly leveraged. In the worst case scenario of US default that carries on for a long period, I cannot imagine the consequences. From my limited understanding, upon default, US banks will not be paid. In fact everybody Uncle Sam owes will not be paid. Vaults will empty. There will be a run on the banks to withdraw their money. The banks on the other hand will try to source hard currency from whereever they can. Borrowing costs will skyrocket. Banks will recall all loans if possible. If you default on your payments, they will repossess your homes. Only HDB-loans will be safe. Eventually money supply will tighten in Singapore and interest costs will rise. Now here is the kliller. Economy grinds to a halt. Valuations plummet. Everybody will be sitting on negative equity. Banks will want you to recapitalise. Will MAS strenghten the S$ then to slow down the US$ exodus? For the man in the street, no job, no $$ what happens? Will this scenario pan out?
  18. I am surprise the authorities have the statistics of gamblers in singapore before and after the opening of casinos [rolleyes] SINGAPORE: The presence of the Integrated Resorts (IRs) here has not caused a spike in the number of gambling addicts, said Casino Regulatory Authority (CRA) chairman Richard Magnus on Friday, citing a study done by the Institute of Mental Health. Speaking at a question and answer session at the 23rd Singapore Law Review Annual Lecture, Mr Magnus said that the study concluded that gambling addiction numbers before and after the establishment of the IRs remained the same. What the IRs did, though, was provide "just another avenue for gambling", said Mr Magnus. He added: "The thinking is that some of these gamblers moved away from the traditional gambling areas and move into casinos." Responding to a question on the social impact of casinos, CRA chief executive Lau Peet Meng, who was also at the event, revealed that the authorities are studying overseas models where it is compulsory for gamblers to declare how much they want to lose before they step into the casino. Currently, patrons to the IRs here can voluntarily cap their gambling outlay. On the call for greater transparency with regard to the number of Singaporeans entering the casinos, Mr Lau agreed that this could be looked into. "It is ... probably one of the aspects of the (Casino Control) Act (that) we need to look at more carefully, which is the legality of the information and how the information shared can be used," he said. But Mr Magnus reiterated: "I can perhaps give you the assurance that the local urban legend that quite a number of our locals or PRs frequent the casinos ... is just a legend." Mr Magnus noted that several challenges lie ahead in the regulation of the IRs. Apart from the "creative ways of money laundering", the casino industry might also change in the years ahead from one that is incentivised to self-regulate - due to the high profits - to one where the industry turns stale. Earlier in his speech, Mr Magnus also said that, while the authorities hope that the IRs are "mature participants who see the value of self-regulation ... we cannot discount the possibility of market failure". He added that there will be occasions where the casino operators and regulator will not view self-disclosure as a win-win situation and that will be when CRA needs to intervene. - TODAY http://www.channelnewsasia.com/stories/sin...1143949/1/.html

  25. Singapore Home > Singapore > Story Jul 6, 2011 Decomposed body found near NUS A DECOMPOSED body has been found in a forested area off Clementi Road - the second such incident within a week. Police said that they were alerted around 6pm yesterday, and are investigating. About 20 police officers combed the area, which is just opposite the National University of Singapore, before emerging with the remains in a white bag close to midnight. This comes after two land survey staff discovered a set of skeletal remains in the forest next to the Tanah Merah MRT Station last Saturday. DANSON CHEONG & KIMBERLY SPYKERMAN
