  3. Yen effect batters A$ below Sing $ Aussie ends day at 96.17 S'pore cents; NZ dollar also hits six-year-low By LARRY WEE (SINGAPORE) The currency clock was turned back several years yesterday as the Australian dollar traded below par against its Singapore counterpart - a situation not seen since January 2003. In fact, by the Asian close, the Australian dollar traded at a six-year low of 96.17 Singapore cents. As recently as November 2007, the currency was riding high at S$1.36. It was not the only higher-risk currency to be battered as the New Zealand dollar also fell 6 per cent in Singapore dollar terms, sliding to 86.76 Singapore cents by yesterday evening - another six-year low. The yen on the other hand called the shots all through the Asian session, surging strongly as Japanese investors scrambled to unload their overseas investments in a hurry - especially with Japan's Nikkei stock index falling more than 9 per cent yesterday. This forced the US dollar sharply back below 100 yen for the first time in six months, and once again inflicting bloody punishment on the Australian (Aussie) and New Zealand dollars (or Kiwi). In Singapore dollar terms, the Japanese currency jumped more than 2 per cent to finish the day at a three-year high of S$1.4884 per 100 yen. Versus the yen, the Aussie and Kiwi plunged even more sharply to finish the day more than 12 and 9 per cent weaker respectively - for a cumulative loss of something like 25 per cent and 18 per cent against the yen in the space of just three short sessions this week. Elsewhere, Asian stock markets tumbled as much as 10 per cent in response to another Wall Street slide of more than 5 per cent on Tuesday evening. And, as a result, the US dollar was also able to post fresh 2008 highs against Asian currencies like the South Korean won as well as the Singapore dollar, Malaysian ringgit, Indian rupee and Philippine peso. While the US dollar closed the session a hefty 2.9 per cent worse off at 98.8 yen, it also surged almost 5 per cent to 1,394 South Korean won, 1.2 per cent to 48.69 rupees and 0.9 per cent to 47.76 pesos. Closer to home, the greenback ended a more modest 0.2 to 0.4 per cent higher at S$1.4705, RM3.4980, 34.55 baht and 9,600 rupiah. Looking ahead, researchers at Standard Chartered Bank warned of no quick recovery before the second half of next year for Asian assets: 'At that time, foreign investors may begin to see good value in Asian markets - anticipating that although Asia ex-Japan is not decoupled from the global slowdown, it is certainty much better insulated than earlier due to stronger domestic demand and the presence of economic powerhouses such as China and India.' US stocks tumbled on Tuesday despite supportive news from the US Federal Reserve, which announced a Commercial Paper Funding Facility or CPFF that will buy the commercial paper of US corporations through a special-purpose vehicle - and thus help them tide over any short- term liquidity shortfall caused by the unwillingness of US banks to lend. The coordinated rate cuts by central banks from several countries were announced after the Asian closing. By then, gold was regaining some shine as a refuge destination, and the euro, British pound and Swiss franc also managed to close with some gains versus the US dollar - at US$1.3629, US$1.7447 and 1.1321 francs per US dollar respectively.

  6. Bro/sis, I gotta short-list my 2 weeks package-tour end Dec holiday with gf again! My main criteria for each potential destination is: 1. Cooling weather (not sub-zero COLD) 2. Good daylight hours (until 6.30pm) 3. Preferably not in SE Asia since I can go anytime 4. Not Australia/New Zealand since I can DIY instead of package-tour 5. Minimal monsoon effect or rainy season After some tots and considering this week's NATAS, I'm looking at South Africa and Central Europe/Asia (Turkey, Greece, Spain, Portugal etc) Any other good suggestions, bro/sis??
  7. Initially I've ruled out going away for holiday this coming June, but as the June programs and activities schedule start to concretise, the possibility of 2 x 3D2N trips is beginning to emerge. The short duration of each trip means I can only help boost our Northern neighbour's economy, and road travelling time not more than 5 hours each way. None of the round 2200+ km circuit I did in December this time . Considering that I've almost exhausted all holiday destinations in Malaysia, I may just have to settle for repeats. Most probable venues: 1 hill + 1 beach. For the hill, I'm thinking of Fraser's, for the peace and tranquility it can offer. For the beach, it'll have to be the east coast once more. Haven't decided which resort yet. Maybe Kijal, maybe Rompin, Maybe Kuantan, but not Desaru. I'm open to any good suggestions , especially places you've tried.
  8. Hi Guys, I'm thinking of a driving holiday in USA, mainly because USD is lower as compared to euro and i hope fellow forummers here can share their experiences and the logistics involved. I have a few places in mind, but they are scattered all over the compass directions on the map, namely, 1) New York City, 2) Yellowstone National Park, 3) San Fransico, Los Angeles 4) Miami If there are more interesting places to visit, please do add in your replies as well.] Types of places I prefer to visit are natural attractions, and city centers with skyscrapers. The target date is around mid july, and i can have about 3 weeks to a month to spare. I'm not sure if i can rent a car over there to do minor cross state trips and if roadside bed and breakfast inns are available, or safe. I would also like to find out if trans state flights across america can be easily done with a singapore passport. Thanks guys!

  16. Hi all, Just wanted to know your opinion or experience if you have tried it before. I will go on a long holiday outside SG (3wks), and will leave my car parked for those 3wks. My car is less than 1yr old so battery should be good. Is car battery still OK after those 3wks? Any suggestion? Some people say I have to disconnect the terminal battery, but not sure if this is necessary (if battery can last long enough, then no need). Thanks.
  17. Any precautions that I would need to take before I go on a trip? Heard must disconnect the battery or something like that? Any other things that I should take note? Please advise... I'll be in HK for the entire week for my 2nd honeymoon...

Now the olfactorily-talented pair are to be honored as heroes for their work in ferreting out millions of illegal discs. The two black Labradors

  24. Hi everyone , we just came back from a driving trip to malacca organise by the local FIAT dealer - TTS Eurocars. The convoy left spore on saturday(11mar06) morning at around 0800hrs and arrive into malacca at around middays. We have stilos , croma , punto and panda on the convoy's ....in all a total of 24cars . It was a enjoyable trips for all who have participated and as most owners are new to italian car , a really eye-opener for what the italian mistress can do on a long stretch of road. I'm driving a 1242cc punto and together with bro fiat124sport , we were doing a constant 140~166km/h after we left malacca on the way back for 3~4hours. We are not racing but was pushing the car to it's limit.....which I must say ,was enlightening and still only able to exploit maybe 70% of it only.... We are certainly looking forward for their next trip which I understand , will be in june to kuantan and to penang in december.
