  1. Hyundai Motor Group has announced that it has developed a “world-first technology” that improves gear-shift efficiency for hybrids. Developed in-house and set to go into production soon, the new technology is called Active Shift Control (ASC) and the Korean company claims that it can reduce gearshift timing by 30% , improving the driving experience and fuel ecomony at the same time. In its press release, the new ASC claims the new technology increases durability of the transmission by minimizing friction during gear shift, which in turn is montiored 500 times per second, “precisely adjusting the transmission rotation speed for faster shift times,” By aligning the rotational speeds of the engine and transmission gear shift times are reduced by up to 30 percent from 500 milliseconds to 350 milliseconds. Despite quicker shift times, ASC is said to deliver smoother gear changes as well. The first model to feature ASC will be the new Sonata Hybrid which has been launched in Korea.
  2. Wonder how the new 986bhp Ferrari SF90's hybrid powertrain works? The Italian company has released a video showing it in its various driving modes. For those who aren't aware of what is powering Ferrari's latest product, the SF90 is equipped with a twin-turbocharged 4.0-litre V8 engine that makes 769bhp and 800Nm of torque on its own. It is matched to three electric motors, one of which is fitted between the V8 and the eight-speed dual-clutch transmission while the other two are located at the front axle, bringing the total power output to a staggering 986bhp. That said, when the driver is in the mood to be green, the supercar can be driven in front-wheel drive mode with the front two electric motors for up to 25 km. Despite being a hybrid, the car only weighs 1,570kg, allowing it complete the century sprint in 2.5 seconds. It will then touch 200km/h in 6.7 seconds before hitting its maximum speed at 340km/h.
  3. The FIA has revealed that the World Rally Championship will start using petrol-electric hybrid rally cars from the 2022 season. Using a common hybrid unit, the cars will have to be able to run on pure electric power during transit stages through cities while the hybrid powertrain will provide an electric power boost on special stages. To make the sport more entertaining, the teams will be given more technical freedom in 2025 even though this has not been confirmed. Also revealed by FIA is a few other new regulations that will soon come into effect. One of them is the stopping of tyre development from 2021 through 2024 in a bid to reduce costs and prevent a tire war among manufacturers. Another one is will require teams to use either a production car bodyshell or compete in vehicles with a tubular spaceframe chassis with a shell on top that features carryover parts from the standard road car it is based around. Cars with bigger dimensions will also be allowed to scaled down to comply with dimension targets.

The powertrain features Ferrari's most powerful V8 yet making 769 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque on its own. It also has three electric motors with two at the front and one in the back, and combined they can provide up to 217 horsepower. This also means that the SF90 Stradale is all-wheel-drive. Getting power from the internal combustion powertrain to the wheels is an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission that shifts 100 milliseconds faster than the transmission in the 488 Pista, but it also weighs about 22 pounds less than Ferrari's existing 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. This is due in part to not needing a reverse gear, since reverse is handled by the front motors. In total, the SF90 weighs in at 3,461 pounds. And at 155 mph, the aerodynamics add 860 pounds of downforce. When everything is deployed on pavement, it hits 62 mph in just 2.5 seconds. And for Ferraristi, it lapped the Fiorano test track in 1 minute and 19 seconds. Of course being a plug-in hybrid, it does have a full electric range. It's a bit short at 15.5 miles. Then again, this isn't entirely about fuel economy; the electric motors allows for torque vectoring, and provide extra traction on launch and help fill in any throttle lag from the gas engine. The interior is high-tech, too. The instrument cluster is a huge 16-inch display. The steering wheel now features touch pads for controlling the instrument cluster, too.

  7. The US Army is currently testing a prototype all-purpose vehicle powered by a Subaru turbodiesel-electric hybrid drivetrain. Called the ULV (Ultra Light Vehicle), it is meant to replace the HUMVEE. Commissioned by the Secretary of Defense and developed by the US Army's TARDEC (Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center), the ULV addresses some of the HUMVEE's shortcomings and serve as the next generation of go-anywhere military truck. Unlike the HUMVEE's V8, the ULV's petrol motor is a Subaru turbodiesel boxer making 175 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. However, even the military is changing with the times with a hybrid drivetrain. According to Jalopnik, the hybrid system is comprised of two Remy electric drive motors and a 14.2 kWh Navitas Li-Iron Phosphate Battery, which at peak power can generate 180 kW (241 hp). TARDEC says the ULV has a range of 337 miles at 35 mph on level ground. On pure electric power, it can cruise up to 21 miles with the advantage of doing so in sheer silence. The electric motors mean that a driveshaft is no longer necessary, and when combined with an improved undercarriage it's a significant improvement over the HUMVEE's ability to shield occupants from roadside mines, whose blasts originate beneath the vehicle. Though the Ultra Light Vehicle is so in name only, and at 13 thousand pounds actually weighs about 3,500 pounds more than the HUMVEE, it has a better power-to-weight ratio thanks to its hybrid drivetrain. In accordance with specs put forth by the Office of the Secretary of Defense, the vehicle will have a payload capacity of 4,500 pounds and cost of $250,000 per unit over a 5,000 unit production run. Testing is scheduled to finish sometime this year, whereupon a determination for production will be decided.

DS7 Crossback E-Tense 4×4 – SUV PHEV with 296 hphttps://paultan.org/2018/09/25/ds7-crossback-e-tense-4x4-suv-phev-with-296-hp/ This is the DS7 Crossback E-Tense 4×4, a plug-in hybrid variant of the French SUV that was revealed in 2017. According to the company, the PHEV model marks an important point in its future as all new models will be electrified versions thereafter. Focusing on the powertrain first, the DS7 Crossback E-Tense 4×4 features a 1.6 litre turbocharged four-cylinder PureTech petrol engine that makes 197 hp (200 PS) at 5,550 rpm and 300 Nm of torque at 3,000 rpm. An EAT8 eight-speed electrified automatic transmission is mated to the engine. The internal combustion engine (ICE) is helped along by two 107 hp (109 PS or 80 kw) electric motors – one on each axle to provide all-wheel drive. DS Automobiles notes that the unit at the front has a higher torque output at 337 Nm compared to the 166 Nm at the rear. Put together, the end result is a total system output of 296 hp (300 PS) and 450 Nm, which is good for a 0-100 km/h time of 6.5 seconds, while the usual highway overtaking sprint from 80-120 km/h takes just 4.4 seconds. While running on the ICE, the vehicle’s top speed is 220 km/h but is lowered to 135 km/h when only the electric motors are in play. Those motors draw power from a vehicle floor-mounted, 120 kg, 13.2 kWh lithium-ion battery (90 kW power rating) that operates between 240-400 volts, allowing the SUV to travel on electricity alone for up to 50 km (WLTP). Meanwhile, the claimed combined fuel consumption figure is around 2.2 litres per 100 km (WLTP), while CO2 emissions is below 49 g/km. By default, the car starts in Zero emission mode whereby only the electric motors provide the motivation. Drivers can also swap to Hybrid mode that summons the ICE into action when needed, Sport mode for maximum performance, and 4WD mode when optimum traction is necessary on varying terrain. A final mode, E-Save, preserves enough energy to drive in all-electric mode for the last 10-20 km of a journey. As for recharging the battery, it’ll take about two hours when the SUV is plugged (Type 2 connect) into a 6.6 kW charger linked to a 32 A power point, four hours with a 14 A plug, and eight hours on a domestic 8 A plug. Other means of getting the battery juiced up are via regenerative braking or using the ICE as a generator. Visually, the car looks largely indifferent from a regular DS7 Crossback aside from the addition of a charging port on the left side of the vehicle, as well as the letter ‘E’ embossed on the gear lever – a nod to the DS E-Tense concept from 2016.

This time around, Honda is positioning the Insight as an upscale, five-passenger sedan instead of a hatch. Honda has released images of the Insight Prototype ahead of its official debut at the Detroit auto show in January. The prototype takes plenty of design cues from the Civic, including its long hood and curvaceous body lines. The 2019 Honda Insight will adopt a two-motor hybrid system. The 2018 Honda Accord Hybrid uses this type of setup, pairing two electric motors with a 2.0-liter DOHC Atkinson cycle engine. Exact powertrain details for the Insight are unknown, but it’s already sounding better than the pesky Integrated Motor Assist setup on the old Insight. We never liked the system, which is comprised of a 1.3-liter I-4 with an electric motor producing a combined total of 98 hp. The powertrain would switch on and off too abruptly at stoplights, as we noted in a 2009 review. Introduced in 1999, the first-generation Insight was a two-door vehicle and the first hybrid to launch in the U.S. Honda didn’t debut a second generation until 2009, when the model adopted a more practical five-door design. Still, we weren’t all that impressed with the Insight’s interior space, not to mention its ride quality. Transforming the Insight from an egg-shaped hatch to a sedan should help broaden its appeal. And it’ll erase any comparisons that may have been made in the past with the king of all hybrids, the Toyota Prius. Expect a much more premium feel and a more spacious interior for the new Insight. It’ll slot above the Civic in Honda’s lineup and will offer fuel economy that is competitive with other compact hybrids, the automaker says. Honda is also claiming the model will have “best-in-class performance.” “You won’t have to be an electrification advocate to appreciate the new Insight—it’s a great car in its own right, independent of what’s happening under the hood,” Henio Arcangeli Jr., senior vice president of Automobile Sales and general manager of the Honda Division at American Honda Motor Co., said in a statement. A production version of the Insight will arrive next summer. It’s part of Honda’s plan for electrified vehicles to comprise two-thirds of its global sales by 2030.   16. Is it truely environmentally friendly? Is there saving in the long term? Can't imagine the day when one needs to change the battery? Anybody here have convinced themselves that it is time to take the plunge and switch to a hybrid? I am seriously considering replacing my old 4 wheeler that has a mine of her own with a Prius but not sure of the long term implications in terms of cost to the driver.

  21. For some time, i'm been wondering about potential dangers of EMF from hybrid batteries. These batteries are in big capacity and usually placed in close proximity to drivers and passengers. The car cabin space is very small. So google is my best friend. For those thinking of getting hybrid cars or already driving one, think about EMF dangers. POV, i don't trust the claims from car makers. There are already lots of cheating done on fuel consumption. I'm not surprised if they cheat on the EMF test results. Fuel cheating doesn't damage your health, but EMF will.   22. Understand that BM is giving 10 yrs warranty to Prius battery, but for PI owner, can please share what is you plan for *touch wood* in case issue with the battery? Because I am hesitating whether want to go hybrid with PI, seems quite common on the road now, just wondering how the battery reliability is covered?
