  14. ESPN Associated Press August 16 2008 We Need This Bolt of Lightning Fresh from rewriting the record books again and capturing his first Olympic medal, running the 100-meter dash in a stunning 9.69 seconds, Jamaican Usain Bolt has captured yet another first - the attention of the eagle-eyed government of Singapore. Hours after Bolt's stunning victory, Mr Teo Chee Hean, Singapore's Minister for Defence and President Singapore National Olympic Council has proclaimed, "We need to capture them when they are young. And at 21-yr old, Usain Bolt is of the right age and potential to be developed for even greater glory." He continues, "It's the same like how we developed our table tennis champions. We see that they have potential to excel in the sports, we negotiate terms with them, offering them promises of better training and quality of life. Look at them now." Banging his fist on the table, he exclaims, "We will get him at all cost, money is not an issue!" Apparently, it does not end there we were told. As a reflection of their long-term vision, Mr Teo has this to say, "Sporting success does not come overnight, it takes months to monitor such players and entice them over, you think that is easy?" He adds, "Our future plans encompasses the importing of even more sportsmen - from distance-runners in Kenya, footballers from Brazil and the African continent, and if the price is right, swimmers from Australia and the USA." The new found optimism stems from the Singapore women's table tennis team breaking the island republic's 48-yr wait for an Olympics medal. The female paddlers, which some Chinese fans mistook and cheered as their own during the Beijing Olympics, is made up of players that were from China. Admist the roar of approval from newly converted fans of the Singapore women's table-tennis team, a supporter has this to say, "Hey, it's perfectly fine, our National football team already has a couple of African players, some angmohs (a local slang for Caucasians), and even two Chinese players, making up half the team!" Another fan shouts, "We don't care! As long as they bring us success, they are a part of us. I don't know why, I found them absolutely repulsive a few months ago, seeing them everywhere, but I love them to bits now!" Comments from the Singapore's women table-tennis team are not available at press-time as they do not speak a word of English.

  17. A CAR importer was fined $95,000 for fraudulent evasion of duty and GST and giving false information to Customs officers to bring in a brand new Porsche Cayman car. Soh Chee Kwang, 31, admitted evading duty and Goods and Services Tax amounting to $9,622 on June 13 and was convicted of one count each of fraudulent evasion of duty and GST, and two counts of furnishing information to Customs officers on Monday. In his declaration to Customs on April 26 to get a Customs permit for the import of the Porsche Cayman from Germany into Singapore, Soh had stated that the value of the car was 28,000 euros (S$59,300) and submitted supporting documents to substantiate this. The car arrived on May 31. Singapore Customs' investigations revealed that the supporting documents provided by Soh were falsified. He had on two separate occasions on May 12 and 13 provided falsified documents to substantiate a lower false purchase value for the motor vehicle. Subsequent investigations revealed that the actual invoice value of the car paid for by Soh to the supplier in Germany was 48,710 euros, which is 20,710 euros higher than the value of 28,000 euros declared by Soh. Soh was arrested on June 12 June and charged. On Mondy, he was fined $60,000 and $25,000 for fraudulent evasion of $6,776.53 in duty and $2,846.14 in GST respectively. On the two counts of furnishing false information, he was fined $5,000 each. Anyone found guilty of fraudulent evasion of duties or GST can be fined up to 20 times the amount of duties and GST evaded or in default a jail sentence. Giving false information and furnishing false documents to Customs officers can land an offender a fine of up to $5,000 or jail term of up to 12 months, or both. Singapore Got LAW Dun PLAY PLAY

  19. Dear all MCFers, I know there are quite a number of businessmen here and I have some questions on importing seafood from Indonesia for distribution in Singapore. I really need to seek your kind enlightenment on the procedures. I have an Indonesian relative who would like to work with me to transport a bulk of fresh lobster/prawns into Singapore for distribution to our local restaurants. He is an established businessman in Indonesia and can settle all the stuffs/paper work over at the Indonesian custom. If I were to act as his Singapore counter-part for distribution here, what are the issues I need to take note of e.g. tax, paper-work, AVA clearance (how to)? I am completely new to this area. Can someone please shed some light? Apollo, Porker and others, are you here? Probably need your advice as you have been my encyclopedia all these while!
  20. Business Times - 23 Apr 2008 Honda races to top of parallel import sales chart By SAMUEL EE PARALLEL imports (PIs) continued to race ahead in the first quarter of this year. And the most popular PI brand is now Honda, not Toyota. Between January and March, the 100 or so PI retailers here sold 5,669 cars, according to the Land Transport Authority. This accounted for 22.9 per cent of the 24,798 new cars registered in Q1 - an increase from 20.9 per cent for the whole of 2007. And where Toyota once ruled the parallel universe, the first three months saw it being overtaken by Honda. Honda PIs notched up 2,491 registrations in Q1, slightly ahead of Toyota's 2,397. The current position of Japan's second-biggest carmaker as the most popular PI make mirrors that of its ranking, for now, among authorised distributors belonging to the Motor Traders Association of Singapore (MTA). In Q1, Honda also upstaged Toyota among MTA members to claim top spot. But there are still three quarters to go in 2008, and the Toyota juggernaut could easily end the year as the best-selling marque in the MTA and PI arenas - just as it has every year since 2002. For now though, Honda is the leader and its Stream compact MPV is the most popular PI model. In Q1, 1,062 units were sold, or almost in every five PI cars. This is no surprise because the Stream also ended 2007 as the top model. The No 2 PI spot in Q1 went to the Toyota Corolla Axio (722 units) and No 3 to the Honda Fit (640), a new generation of the popular small hatchback which is yet to be imported by authorised distributor Kah Motor. The once popular but now ageing Toyota Wish (377 units) ranked fifth position, behind the Honda Airwave (390). The jump in PI numbers is especially significant in the context of a shrinking overall market. Last year, 106,710 new cars were registered - an 8.8 per cent fall from the all-time high of 117,062 in 2006. This year the industry is not expected to sell more than 98,376 cars because of a reduction in the COE quota. With PI sales surging in a shrinking market, they must be eating into the share of authorised distributors. MTA members sold 18,384 units in Q1 this year. In other words, one PI car was registered for about three MTA cars - a ratio that has been rising steadily in the PIs' favour. In 2007 it was one PI car for roughly four MTA cars. In 2006, it was one for about six. The improvement marks a turnaround for the PI trade from just a few years ago, when it appeared close to collapse. In 2004, the number of PI cars was about 4,000 after the government cracked down on rampant under-declaration, among other things. That figure was a big drop from 2003's 7,500 or so units and at odds with the strong growth of the overall passenger car market, which was riding on an increasing supply of COEs. But the PI business turned around in 2005 - sales rose to 6,282 units before rocketing to 16,137 in 2006. One year later, 2007's 22,304 grey imports set another record. So will 2008 be a boom year for PIs? It could be because of a parallel-imported car's more attractive pricing. But authorised distributors complain that this is due to grey importers' lower OMVs (open market values) and willingness to offer CNG (compressed natural gas) conversions, which reduce the selling price of the new car through a 40 per cent green vehicle rebate.
  21. Need adv on the above - classification number and whether this chemical is consider toxin and import need to apply special import permit Anyone out there who works for forwarding company and is familiar with import classification - can you kindly adv. TIA
  22. This inspired from the thread on how much the car sellers make from us Loberts. So will you self import to beat the game? One way is to buy direct from a large importer a vechicle & do all the paper work to register the vehicle in Sg. Will be less complicated that importing direct from Jap/Germany but still save a huge chunk of money! Anyway the details for self import is here if your intrested. http://www.onemotoring.com.sg/publish/onem...portation_.html
