Currently, there are three kinds of licence fees, ranging between S$40 and S$270. This figure could increase by 30 per cent. MediaCorp understands that the authorities could also impose stiffer penalties for those selling cigarettes to underaged smokers. There are about 5,000 tobacco retailers in Singapore, half of them in coffee shops and they're likely to feel the pinch. Thomas Foo, chairman, Kheng Keow Coffee Merchants, Restaurant and Bar-Owners Association, said:

  13. PTC should allow private bus operators to proivide feeder bus services for a start. these private operators should price their fares cheaper than SBS. in a way, this will provide competition to SBS and keep them on their toes. They will think twice before applying for a price increase. Too bad i live in an area powered by a PAP MP. if i live in potong pasir, maybe can highlight to Mr Chiam.

  15. My insurance premium last year was around SGD700...Quoted this year renewal premium of around SGD980...Luckily my chair was steady enough to hold me...Else I would have to make a claim from my personal accident insurance for falling off my chair!!! A hefty 40% increase...Wasn't it protrayed as a 10% -20% increase on the newspaper??? How come mine was 40% when I have not scored a single demerit point and make a single claim over the past 15 years of driving??? The "market value" of my car is dropping every year yet my premium is increasing every year...When I am driving at those days when a 1.6 saloon cost more than 100k...My insurance premium was only around SGD600...What is going on here??? Did the overhead really increase that much??? Is there really alot of people making a claim using fake injuries??? Is it a situation like the chinese saying "yang mou chu zhai yang shen shang"(the goat fur will be from the goat)...The insurance people just happily passed on the cost to consumers??? So will it in evolve to a stage when a person decided not to own any car anymore in his lifetime...He will just lightly crashed his car against a pillar and claim injury???

  20. MELBOURNE - Australian wildfire survivors have launched a lawsuit against a Singapore-owned electricity firm alleging a downed power line sparked one of the blazes, it was reported Sunday. Kinglake residents are launching a class action against SP Ausnet and the Victoria state government claiming the power line set off a fire near the town that killed at least 100 people, The Age newspaper said. The newspaper said police investigating the causes of the fires had removed a length of fallen cable and a power pole as evidence. The firm reportedly handling the class action, Melbourne-based Slidders Lawyers, on its website urges residents affected by the bushfires to contact it and seek compensation. SP Ausnet, part of the Singapore Power Group, refused to comment directly on the lawsuit, saying its priority was restoring power to fire-affected areas as quickly as possible.

  24. heard and read news that motor insurance quotes are on the upswing as the companies try to mitigate losses, but did not feel anything until today when i got a quote for my upcoming insurance that reality really sank in... - last year's basic premium was $1003.20, thus $751.39 with 30% NCD incl GST -if everything remains a constant, this year's premium should conservatively be calculated to be $644.05 incl GST - cheapest quote i got so far is $999 - therefore 999 / 644.05 is about 1.55.... quotes from different companies, but about the same insurance terms and around the lowest prices i can find... representing a 55% increase on my premium even with additional NCD... didn't know the bullet was that hard to bite... how can they ever justify such an increase man....
