  1. childcare fees increased from 345 to 375. u think is fair? 2% increase for 345 should be roughly 7 dollars rite?

  3. Was wondering with the decrease of petrol and diesel prices recently......how come mrt and bus fares still wanna increases........??? Is the bus drivers salary or wages going to increase????? It's doesn't make sense when they are encouraging people to take public transport......
  4. hi, would like to find out what are the possible reasons for increase in FC. trying to trouble-shoot what could be wrong. normally my 3/4 full tank could take me about 400km, but now it has dropped to 220km.. so im puzzled why the drastic drop. i dont accerelate nor has a heavy right foot.. travels mainly (95%) on expressway and 80km/hr.. and i dont take passengers except sometimes my wife. checked my tire pressure, it's ok. possible reasons? - my mech said my steering abit loose, some free play.. does it affect FC? - oil change? i was using 10w30 oil, but recently changed to (i think, w40 or 50) cos ran out of engine oil. but does it affect tat much? - now having difficulties starting my engine in the morning, difficult to crank now also. starter problem? which affects FC? hmm.. im not too sure.. hope you can help me out. at least have some other possible factors tat i can tell my mechanic.. thanks in advance
  5. PLEASE SET UP A NEW GANTRY OUTSIDE MY SHOP ASAP PLEADS SEMBAWANG SHOPKEEPER! ERP helps business, says LTA Congestion, if left unchecked, will have negative impact on the economy By SAMUEL EE (SINGAPORE) ERP rates must go up because the current congestion, if left unchecked, will have a negative impact on the economy, says the Land Transport Authority. From July 7, 2008, electronic road pricing rates will rise sharply and five new ERP gantries will be erected along the Singapore River line to reduce transit traffic using the city area for outbound trips in the evening. This is similar to the concept behind the Orchard Cordon, which discourages vehicles from making use of Orchard Road to get to other areas. But the hikes and gantries have met with protests from motorists, some of whom have questioned whether the moves are necessary, given that traffic congestion does not appear to be as bad as the LTA says it is. LTA chief executive Yam Ah Mee disagrees, saying that the authority's measurements of road speeds in the city area have shown that congestion is gradually building up and becoming more pervasive. He says that within the city, speeds on major routes such as North Bridge Road, South Bridge Road, Stamford Road and Bras Basah Road have fallen by up to 22 per cent in the evening, compared to two years ago. 'ERP changes are necessary to manage congestion effectively,' Mr Yam explains . 'Faster travel times lead to overall lower transport costs and ultimately help businesses to remain competitive. Congestion also adversely impacts family life as people spend more time on the roads.' When asked about the effectiveness of the higher ERP rates, given that Singaporeans seem to eventually accept them after some initial complaints, he says that the actual ERP price levels depend on the choices drivers make and how they weigh the charges to be paid against the other options, such as travelling during non-ERP times or switching to public transport. 'As traffic demand patterns change, ERP rates will also have to respond accordingly because the situation is dynamic,' says Mr Yam. 'If the demand for limited road space goes up over time, it is likely that ERP charges will have to go up as well. This does not mean that ERP is not effective, only that periodic reviews are needed as the situation does not remain static.' He adds that since the system was implemented in 1998, ERP has been effective in encouraging motorists to consider alternatives. As a result, traffic speeds on priced roads have been maintained within their optimal speed range through regular reviews and rate adjustments. 'However, the edge has come off in recent years and that is why we have had to make some enhancements to the system at this time,' he says. 'Having done this, we are confident that the system will be effective again.' As for those diehard motorists who are unlikely to give up their cars whatever the increase in ERP rates, Mr Yam says that the LTA's aim is not to get everyone to stop driving 'as we would then be under-utilising the roads'. 'Rather, the intent is to influence enough car users not to use the roads during congested periods,' he says. 'In doing so, we will be able to optimise the use of the roads. We only need a small decrease of cars on the roads to bring about smooth-flowing roads.' In the case of the five new gantries, LTA is targeting a 17-18 per cent reduction in car trips into the CBD. The LTA reiterates that the system is not a revenue-raising exercise. The government has been progressively shifting from vehicle ownership taxes to usage charges, with road tax to be cut by 15 per cent from July 1, 2008. This will cost the government $110 million annually and follows the 10 per cent cut in ARF or the additional registration fee in March 2008 - at a cost of $200 million. So total cost is $310 million. At the same time, ERP revenue will increase by $70 million a year (total annual ERP revenue is about $100 million). 'ERP places the decision of whether to drive, travel at a different time, use a different route or take public transport, in the hands of motorists,' says Mr Yam. 'Without ERP to keep our roads smooth-flowing, there is no choice as everyone using the road will be caught in gridlock.'

  10. Source: http://sg.news.yahoo.com/afp/20080422/tts-...ce-c1b2fc3.html Oil prices climb past 118 dollars for first time AFP - 1 hour 52 minutes ago LONDON (AFP) - - The price of New York crude rocketed to a record high point of 118.05 dollars per barrel on Tuesday, lifted by unrest in Nigeria, weakness of the dollar and OPEC's reluctance to raise short-term output. Later on Tuesday, New York's main oil futures contract, light sweet crude for delivery in May, stood at 117.77 dollars, up 29 cents from the price on Monday. The contract expires at the close. London's Brent North Sea crude for June hit a historic pinnacle at 115.03 dollars a barrel. It later stood at 114.67 dollars, up 24 cents. "For the moment, there does not seem to be anything stopping the price juggernaut we are seeing in energy," said MF Global analyst Ed Meir. The Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) plans to lift production capacity by five million barrels per day (bpd) by 2012, the cartel's secretary general Abdalla Salem El-Badri said on Tuesday. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the International Energy Forum in Rome, El-Badri also said that the cartel aimed to boost production capacity by nine million bpd by 2020. However, the 13-nation OPEC cartel, which produces 40 percent of the world's oil, has insisted that there was no shortage of supplies in the market. "The market is still fairly tight, with OPEC reluctant to hike output, blaming speculators and the broad weakness in the dollar for driving prices higher," said Sucden analyst Andrey Kryuchenkov. Analysts said reports of pipeline sabotage in Nigeria has helped push prices to record heights. Nigerian Energy Minister Odein Ajumogobia said Tuesday that there would be "no significant" interruptions of oil supply following an attack on pipelines of Africa's top oil producer. "There is no significant disruption, between 25,000-30,000 barrels per day. But it's being fixed and it could be back online quickly," Ajumogobia told reporters in Rome. The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta (MEND) militant group, active in the west African country's oil-rich south, claimed responsibility for an attack on Shell's key Bonny terminal in an e-mail on Monday. Anglo-Dutch oil firm Shell said on Monday that it may not be able to honour contracts for April and May after MEND attacked two key pipelines. "Concerns remain regarding Nigerian supplies, where force majeure has been called on several delivery contracts following an escalation in militant activity," said analysts at energy consultancy John Hall Associates. Overall, violence in the southern Delta region has reduced Nigeria's total production by a quarter since January, 2006. Global supply concerns have also been rattled by the forthcoming closure of the 200,000 barrels-per-day Grangemouth refinery in Scotland, which faces a two-day strike this Sunday. In Rome, the International Energy Agency's executive director Nobuo Tanaka warned that high oil prices could tip the world economy into recession. However, he has agreed with OPEC's stance that markets are currently well supplied, while attending the joint producers and consumers forum.
  11. just wondering if any of you noticed the increasing number of road accidents lately, especially after the increase profile of F1 in Singapore leading up to the night race in sept. do you think there a co-relation or singaporeans have always been speedsters? i've come across more tailgaters(slipstream), aggressive overtakers(late braking), and high speed cornering(apex driving) cars these days then say just 2 years ago. what do you guys think?
  12. Read today ST and SMRT is applying to LTA to increase the frequency of their train services during morning & evening peak hours and also at lunch time by another 500 more rides with effect in May 2008. So, with extra 500 more serivces, operating & operations cost will increase a lot..... . Electricity tarif remain high, manpower require to run those extra trains services,........etc. In the other hand, LTA trying to convince ppls to use public transports by building more ERPs in heartlands HDB estates, reduce COE,.........etc. So more ppls taking trains, means more services require for both trains operators resulting more operating cost...... So............... will this comes down to one solution, increase in prices .....
  13. Read yesterday papers and was by the report that LTA is widenning the AMK Ave 1 junction CTE with another turning lane....... With that extra lane, more vehicles will join the CTE morning jam and thus give them every reason to increase the ERP charges...... . There again, LTA says that due to controlling the morning jam, they have to increase the charges...... Already CTE have 2 ERP's and now with extra lane and more vehicles travelling....... , when will it end. More vehicles will then be diverted to TPY and those residents from the north, you are cornered....... Those travel in the evening along CTE is also not spared as there are 2 ERP's up north....
  14. Just received a renewal offer letter from AIG for 2008, after so-called discount. it's even more expensive than the amt that I paid for last year. Is it a norm now that all insurance companies increase their premiums?.....Anyone encounter such situation? Btw, my insurance expiring in Jan 08, anyone have good offers/lobangs can PM me..thks...
  15. Sigh! everything also increase!!! [sweatdrop] Source : http://www.xxxxxxx.com/news/news.php?newsid=765 Toll charges for both the causeway and second link will increase from next month. Singapore's toll rates are pegged to those set by Malaysia for the use of the Causeway and Second Link. The current revision of Singapore's toll rates at the Causeway and Second Link takes into consideration the new rates introduced by Malaysia on 1 January 2008, and current Singapore Dollar-Malaysian Ringgit exchange rate. The revised tolls for the Causeway and the Second Link are shown in the tables below. The revised toll rates will apply to motorists on both inward and outward-bound for the Second Link, and only for outward bound traffic on the Causeway.
  16. Got reliable info from my source... Several major ADs (the BIG players) will increase price tomorrow around 12 noon. Their sales quotas have been hit by last weekend's jam-packed crowd... now can up the price and relax a bit. *I'm just passing on the info in good faith. Don't come and say I BS or anything.
  17. So many pple think by buying a car will justify the ever rising cab fare?Beware it is a trap set by govt as more cars equal to more congestion, sustain COE price or even increase, petrol price increase or ERP increase than you regret buying car. Anyway, other than complaining ,we must remember that every car we buy, we give 1 to our govt. exp like AFF of 110% of OMV, GST on the car, registration, insurance, road tax and lastly bank loan to finance the car. It all $$$$$$ to our govt coffers. So think twice before jumping into it.
  18. I just watched the news a minute ago. There used to be a long queue of passengers at Seng Kang in the morning. But after the price increase, there was no passenger in the morning. Instead, there was a long queue of empty taxis. Keep up the good work, Singaporeans. You can help to decide the pricing of the taxi here.

  20. Just received childcare centre letter stating that they are increasing our fee due to the GST & etc... Thou it has increased by S$20 & this is quite reasonable, but for my case, will be S$690 for both my children. We have used up our CDA on March2008 & thus, we have to pay by cash... With our miserable pay, we are facing financial problem. We are currently looking for childcare centre located @ AMK Ave 10 or nearby. Hoping that the fee there will be much more cheaper. (Don't think about getting a maid cos I don't really trust them after the abusing case) Honestly speaking, most of the childcare centre services more or less are the same. Only that are there any homeworks or spelling given. Ours don't have at all. So, I do not know what's my kids standard. My K1 doesn't know how to spell "Hand" "Leg", etc at this moment. So this survey might help us a little.. If possible, appreciate if you able to state the location of the childcare centre.
  21. saw shell display $1.7xx for 95... http://www.caltex.com/sg/en/pump_prices/price_2007_10_01.asp
  22. I believe by increase speed limit 10-20km/h will help to solve expressway traffic issue... but their solution is to increase erp rates.... or build more gantries...
  23. Was looking around and came across this stats from stat board...no wonder our roads so crowded now....100K....
