  2. Effective Speed Controls in India Indian Speed Controls Speed controls being used in India ... How's this for effective speed control? I don't know about you, but this would certainly slow me down! Drivers slow down and actually try to "straddle" the hole. This is an actual speed control device that is currently in use. It is MUCH cheaper than speed cameras, radar guns, police officers, etc. Pretty clever -- especially when they move them around every day. Isn't art wonderful?

Swedish laws allow a bankrupt company to come out of bankruptcy if someone or some company injects the necessary amount of money in order to save it. There were reports that the Turkish government might be interested in the Swedish company. And at the same time, Chinese company Youngman has acquired Saab

    Driving in India

I recently got back from a working trip to India, and I must say, for someone who has not been to India before, it truly was an eye-opener. If you are used to the orderly and efficient system that is Singapore, it is most definitely a shock to the system once you've experienced Indian traffic. (For the record, I got the picture above from the Internet. I was too shell-shocked during my trip to take any photos of Indian traffic myself) For one, Indians never slow down. NEVER. They blast through intersections and zoom out of side roads without any care for other traffic. The prevailing attitude seems to be, "Others be damned, I'm going and that's that." Yet somehow, amazingly, nobody gets into an accident. It appears that they are all prepared for someone to appear from nowhere, and are ready for evasive action. (Although, having said that, the number of cars you see with damaged body panels indicate that there is a fair share of contact in Indian traffic). On the highways, lane discipline is non-existent. Every conceivable space on the road is occupied, and you'll find yourself squeezed between other cars, motorbikes, tuk tuks, buses and whatever forms of transport they use there. The gaps they leave you are incredibly fine. Nobody uses their wing mirrors either. They actually fold their mirrors in to avoid getting them knocked off. Talk about unnecessary. Horns and high beams are common usage items, and the rule seems to be bigger is boss. Which I supposed helped a bit in the 7-Series that we were in. Good luck to you though if you find yourself in a Tata Nano, or worse, one of those flimsy three-wheeled tuk tuks that serve as taxis in Delhi. And if you're a pedestrian trying to cross the road, you'd better have balls made of solid, cast iron steel. It really is something that has to be experienced in person, and honestly, after a trip to India, you'll appreciate Singapore's traffic conditions much better, despite our supposed flaws. Be thankful the next time you come across someone who makes you mad on the roads. It could be worse, you know.
  12. Vitantonio Liuzzi will step aside in order for Narain Karthikeyan to race at his home grand prix in India next weekend, the HRT team have confirmed. The Indian driver will line-up alongside Daniel Ricciardo for the inaugural event, which may come as a surprise to the Australian who earlier admitted it would more than lilkely be him that would be replaced. Team principal, Colin Kolles, thanked Liuzzi for his 'professional approach and attitude' toward the line-up change. "For this single event, Narain will be driving alongside Daniel Ricciardo," confirmed Kolles. "I have asked Tonio Liuzzi to step aside for the Indian GP in order to allow driving programs with Ricciardo and Karthikeyan to be completed. "I have to thank Tonio for his professional approach and attitude. After the positive performance the team had in Korea, I hope that we will keep on that line in India. Although Narain has already driven around the track and given us a positive feedback, we really don't know what to expect but we are looking forward to it." http://thef1times.com/news/display/04788 relatively decent formula 1 driver....

  15. Something extraordinary has happened in Aurangabad, a small industrial town in India. 150 individuals, consisting of lawyers, engineers, doctors , IT specialists and so forth had made a group purchase of 150 different Mercedes Benz at one go. Now how the group buy came into being is a story all by itself. Awhile ago, a group of friends decided to buy a luxury car each. And according to a local news channel and a few motoring sites from India this group of affluent Aurangabadians (I suppose this is what you call people who live in Aurangabad) were not sure of which brand to buy as a group. The discussion must have also spread by word of mouth and via local car forums as well as meet ups and this ended up involving more and more people from around the area. Somehow, after all the talk Mercedes Benz was selected and somehow the State Bank of India (SBI) got to know about this intention to purchase as a group and came with a offer which helped buyers who wanted to buy with loan options. I would imagine that the bank manager
  16. New Delhi is a metropolis which is mainly famous for being the capital of India and its ridiculously bad traffic. So much so that we have now heard from the New York Times that the traffic police there have resorted to using facebook to let people post traffic offenders so that action can be taken against these offenders. If you've ever watched on YouTube or gone to New Delhi for a first hand look at the traffic scenario there you would know that traffic laws are blatantly disregarded. There will be jaywalkers throughout the whole length of the road, scooters, motorcycles and bicycles weaving in and out of traffic and cars doing the same too. Motorcyclists will be going around the city without helmets and traffic lights ignored. Sometimes you could see the pedestrians crossing a four lane city street with the skills of a contortionist, yoga master and a gymnast as they usually see to bend and twist as they avoid passing vehicles of various sorts. So the New Delhi traffic police had started a Facebook page in June 2010 so that the public can interact with them. And since photographs of motorists flaunting the law has been posted, the police have issued 665 traffic violation summonses. The Facebook page also has about 19,200 people liking it when I last checked. There are also 3,000 photographs for the Delhi police to vet through also. The photo below is from the site and shows a motorcyclist riding without a helmet. Of course there are those who now complain that giving out summons via 'proof' from a social networking site is an invasion of privacy and that the authenticity of the photographs may be questionable. But in any case, there are those that support and those that do not. Actually it isn't something so outrageous, we've heard that people not getting jobs when companies opened up their social networking site and found photographs showing them to be very drunk, overtly social or just plain stupid. If employers are looking through such social networking accounts, this isn't something strange indeed. Now the question is whether we would be seeing something like this on the local front; the local traffic police having their own Facebook sites and summons being issued based on a photograph posted on Facebook. If you happen to know anyone working in one of the above law enforcement agencies, point them in some other direction and not to this piece of news. It may give them ideas if you get what I mean.

  20. Nissan hopes to launch 2,500 dollar car in India in 2010 Nissan and Renault hope to start selling a car for about 2,500 dollars in India in around 2010 along with their local partner there, chief executive Carlos Ghosn said Wednesday. "We have already practically decided all the attributes of the car," Ghosn told reporters at the Tokyo Motor Show. "We have the full intention to do it -- if it's feasible. Hopefully this is going to be 2010 in India," he said. Ghosn, who heads both Japan's Nissan Motor Co. and its French partner Renault, said he would visit Indian partner Bajaj Auto next week for talks on the car. He said that it appeared possible to make a 2,500-dollar car for India, but the big question was whether it could be exported to other markets such as Europe, China, Brazil, Mexico or even the United States. "But the first step is to make it for India and to make it competitive," he added. The car will be mostly produced by Indian partner Bajaj with the support of the Nissan-Renault alliance, Ghosn added. The world's automakers are increasingly setting their sights on India, which is one of the world's fastest growing automobile markets. Indian automaker Tata Motors plans to introduce its own 3,000-dollar car in its home market next year. Ghosn also said Nissan hoped to start mass marketing electric cars by 2012 in response to growing worries about global warming. "We see already in some large cities people are turning against cars," said Ghosn, adding that simply cutting emissions by 20 or 30 percent was not enough as people would switch to alternative forms of transportation.
