  1. Hi, I just want to check this with fellow forumers here, if you pay your insurance by installment plan, and half way you sold your car and cancel your insurance, you should get a refund correct? how does this refund typically come back to you? is it by cheque or credited back to you bank? I just want to have a feel on whats the standard practice.
  2. Hi guys, would just like an opinion on how do you guys insure yourself. Pre-existing insurance that i have ========================= Life insurance + Critical Illness $200k Aviva-SAF term accidental death $100k NTUC Enhanced Incomeshield (ie medishield hospitalisation plan) DPS for CPF I'm getting married this year. Parents both retired. 30 yrs old. My Annual income will be above 100k/yr. In view of the increased responsibilities of ensuring my wife and my parents are cared for if something happpens to me So i'm thinking of increasing my Aviva-SAF insurance beyond the $100k and getting the Critical Illness rider for the SAF one as well (maximum is 300k at $360/yr) Aviva SAF insurance Aviva-SAF is term insurance, agents won't earn any commission and hence their advice will likely be garbage as well. Is there a recommended level of insurance based on your annual income? How do you guys do it?
  3. Will be planning a driving trip to Australia. I'm weighing the option of whether to include the 'Reduce Reliability" package from the car hirer. Generally most Car hirer will charge from AUD$3300 - $5000 excess regardless damge is your fault or not, but with the "Reduce Liabiilty: package, this excess can reduce to AUD $330-440. But this "Reduce Liability" Package don't come cheap, at rounf AUD $26 per day, for a 8 days, trip, this would mean a extra AUD$208 on car rental for peace of mind. Since I'll be buying travel insurance, I'm hoping to find one with good rental vehicle excess. So far checked AIG =$750. AXA=$1000. Tenet=$500, MSIG Premium plan =$1500. Anymore recommendations?
  4. while getting out of a very tight parallel parking, i gently touched the rear bumper of the car in front of me. it was so gentle that my OC and kids don't even know until i asked them if they felt anything. should i report to car insurance? my car has totally no damage at all.
  5. Hello all, Just checking with all the drivers in MCF .... Anyone uses AVIVA for their car insurance ? I am checking around as my renewal is due soon. The quote that I received from AVIVA is 20% lower than the quote I received from Chartis. Any comments ? Anyone can to share their experience for Aviva ? Thanks a million. Cheers
  6. Just received the renewal notice from Aviva. Due to good driving habit and accident free, I am awarded the Safe Driver Discount. Sad news is, the premium will increase about 25% to $750 (last year was $570). Doesn't seem to be logical at all....
  7. Was hunting for travel insurance and came across NTUC's Enhanced PreX plans which cover pre-existing medical conditions. BTW, I'm not an agent, just sharing.. http://www.income.com.sg/forms/brochure/travel.aspx?ext=.pdf
  8. Would like to find out if anyone who had done renewal this year, did your premium increased compared to last year? By increase, I mean all other factors remain the same, ie NCD & OFD. If increased, please state by how much, and which company is it. Mine was increased from $860 to $1040, and cited increase across the board from AIG. An increase of 20% lei... Thought the companies are already making $$ liao.

  17. Imagine you are fetching a neighbor to work and this neighbor gives you a bar of chocolate. If you get into an accident, the injured neighbor is not covered by your private car insurance and he/she sues you. This is because private car insurance excludes "hire and reward" usage. Carrying of passengers with payment in this case. Anyone knows which insurer is willing to extend private car insurance to cover "hire and reward" ? Buying commercial car insurance is out of the question because you are not running a business and the payment is low.
  18. I bought a Toyota Wish from Borneo Motors a couple of months ago. The salesman offered me the standard AIG Auto Protector policy (supposedly "comprehensive"), which I took as using some other insurance would incur a penalty. This seems to be fairly standard practice among many dealers, including ADs. I saw this letter published in the newspaper a few days ago (I think it was on 2nd June): In case it isn't clear, the writer (Tan Siak Khian) is claiming that there are clauses in this standard policy that exclude coverage for unnamed passengers falling outside the age range 16-65 (meaning the young and the elderly) and also passengers who are intoxicated (meaning that if you are the designated driver ferrying a drunk passenger around, that passenger will not be covered in the even of an accident). I checked my own policy yesterday, when I was relatively free. I've attached a photo of the offending section. It appears the letter writer was spot-on in his observation (look at parts d. and e.). I'm now worried about the implications of this contract on coverage for my 12-year old child and my elderly parents. Does this mean I can't safely carry them in my car anymore? I've never heard of "named passengers", but does AIG expect me to nominate them personally to ensure coverage? My sales guy at Borneo was of little help - I asked him to clarify this a few days ago, but he has yet to respond. BTW, my father's Nissan Note from Tan Chong was also insured under this AIG scheme, and that also has weirdness - he tells me the policy only applies if he (the driver) is under 65, but he did declare his age correctly at the time of application (and they approved it!). I don't think any of our other policies (with other insurers) have these issues. I'm making this post to advise others to read through their policy terms very carefully, and if possible, share what they find. I'm also asking for advice about my options. I believe I can cancel my AIG policy and get the remaining premium, but there's always a penalty for early cancellation. Do you think that I should be able to make a case for waiver of this penalty given the (in my view) unjust clauses embedded in this contract? Also, I wonder if this legal language falls afoul of the Motor Vehicles (Third-Party Risks and Compensation) Act (CHAPTER 189)? Quoting, Interestingly, the Act talks about the liability of the user, but does not directly address the liability of the insurer? Or is that implied since the Act is about insurance anyway?
  19. Hey anyone tried aviva car insurance? They seemed to be quite aggressive in their marketing campaign
  20. Hi buddies Need help. Just bought a new car and for the first time in my car ownership life, I decided to go for online insurance and pay the penalty for taking outside insurance. The problem is... The SE requires my car insurance to register the car while the online insurer requires the car plate for processing... It's a chicken n egg issue. Well ... I can call in to the hotline to find out more later... But is the SE pulling a fast one?
  21. Hi bros, Situation here is as such. My friend rented a hyundai verna for 2 days. yesterday while driving along a 2 lane 1 way traffic at pasir ris, a taxi in front of him ebrake to pick up passanger. his right lane was clear so he signal n swerve to the right lane. but behind him there was also a lorry from the left lane who saw the taxi in front n swerve to the right too. ended up both vehicles swerve to the right at the same time but the lorry was travelling too fast and banged my friend's car. Anyway does not matter how accident occurred impt thing is my friend is confident in winning the case. Now he goes back n tells the car rental company about the situation n my friend himslef suggest to private settle. but the bloddy idiot company wants to claim from him $5000 which is impossible cause his damage was like $150. $5000 because he claims 4 days loss of use is worth $5000. So nvm lan lan got to fight insurance. Now car rental company say better not to claim insurance. But my friend say he bo bian cant fork out 5k plus repair for his rental car amounting to about 6k plus loss of use about 7k. Now the insurance company say ok can claim but there are 2 types of insurance. 1st party n 3rd party. If my friend claim 1st party, win or lose the case still must pay the access of $4000 to company as signed in contract(this is a norm for car rental) and this is all he needs to pay. If my friend claims 3rd party if he win no need pay a cent. but if lose rental company say he got to bear all lawyer fee, repair damage, loss of use, loss of income etc. which may about to 5 digits. What are his alternatives here may i ask? Thanks so much for lau jiaos help in advance.

  23. Insurance loophole? Cabby refuses to pay up for car accident By LEDIATI TAN THEIR car was hit by a taxi from the back. But when they later tried to claim the $2,000 repair bill from the cabby's insurer, they were told that the cabby had signed a letter discharging them and the cab company from all claims relating to the accident. This means that Mr Tan Teck Yiang and his wife will have to settle the matter with the cabby privately. But so far, he has refused to pay up. Said Mr Tan, 40, a regional business manager: "This accident has been a nightmare. Can companies be absolved of all responsibilities with a discharge letter from the driver?" The accident happened on Oct 15 last year. Mr Tan's wife, Madam Seow Kwok Long, 39, a healthcare worker, was driving the couple's six-year-old Ford Laser Tierra when it was hit by a TransCab taxi at a junction along Ang Mo Kio Ave 3. She was alone at that time and had stopped at a red light. She said: "It had just stopped raining and the road was a bit wet. The driver said that he couldn't stop in time." Madam Seow noticed small dents on her car's bumper, while the taxi's right headlight was broken. "I told him if the damage is not serious, I would not make a report. But if the damage is serious and repairs are needed, I would have to make a report," said Madam Seow. On her father's advice, she reported the accident to the Independent Damage Assessment Centre at Sin Ming. She said that she did not inform the taxi driver as she thought that the insurance company would do so. The total repair cost plus vehicle rentals came up to $1,968. The rear bumper and the reverse sensor had to be replaced. In December, Mr Tan was informed by the workshop that the cabby had signed a letter discharging TransCab and its insurer at the time, Liberty Insurance, from all claims relating to the accident. He then met up with the taxi driver, Mr Johnny Yow, 52, at the workshop on 29 Dec last year. Mr Tan claimed that Mr Yow disagreed with the repair costs and refused to pay. When contacted, the cabby disputed the extent of the damage caused to Mr Tan's car. Said Mr Yow: "It was just a slight knock. There was no damage at all (to the other car). When it happened, she and I agreed that since the car had no damage (and no one was injured), the matter will be dropped." A spokesman for TransCab said that as Mr Yow did not report the accident to them within 24 hours, he has to pay the full excess up to a maximum of $2,800. She added that Mr Yow had signed the discharge letter because he wanted to settle the matter on his own, although the company does not encourage its drivers to do so. Said the spokesman: "Once the driver signs the discharge letter, then it's hard for the company to handle the case. We cannot withdraw the discharge letter." Mr Yow said he signed the discharge letter because he wanted to negotiate a private settlement with Mr Tan. "I'm not willing to pay, but the accident did happen. It's my mistake," said the cabby. "If they want to settle, I'm willing to pay $300, but will they accept it or not?" Mr Tan said the amount was unacceptable. He has written to the Land Transport Authority (LTA) and the General Insurance Association of Singapore (GIA), expressing his concern over the use of the discharge letter which he felt was a loophole. "Do we want a situation where taxi drivers can just go back and sign discharge letters after all accidents?" asked Mr Tan. When contacted, an LTA spokesman said: "As the insurance contract is an agreement between the insurance companies and the owner of the vehicle, drivers are thus advised to seek GIA's assistance with regard to the claim." However, Mr Derek Teo, president of GIA, said that it was "not GIA's authority or place to intervene in claims matters between an insurance company and its policyholders or third party claimants". He added: "GIA has always encouraged our members to resolve claims disputes with their customers to reach a settlement quickly and amicably." When contacted, Mr Roland Heng, assistant manager of claims at Liberty Insurance, said: "Our position is very clear. The driver failed to report the accident. He then signed a discharge letter so Liberty Insurance is unable to proceed with the claims." The deadlock has left Mr Tan upset and frustrated. Although Mr Tan is aware that he can take legal action to recover the money, he is reluctant to do so. He said: "Even if the court rules in our favour, we could end up spending a lot of money on legal fees, without getting anything in return, if the taxi driver is incapable of paying up." >> Next Why is All these happening when We bought car insurance for what..........something is really very wrong
