  1. Latest "casualty" of the COVID-19 outbreak... THE GENEVA INTERNATIONAL MOTOR SHOW IS CANCELLED! #GIMSSWISS 5-15 March 2020 The 90th edition of the GIMS, which was supposed to welcome the media from next Monday and the general public from 5 to 15 March 2020, will now finally not take place. This is an injonction decision of the Federal Council of 28 February 2020 that no events with more than 1,000 people are allowed to take place until 15 March 2020. The decision falls 3 days before the opening of the exhibition to the media. The organizers accept this decision: "We regret this situation, but the health of all participants is our and our exhibitors' top priority. This is a case of force majeure and a tremendous loss for the manufacturers who have invested massively in their presence in Geneva. However, we are convinced that they will understand this decision," said Maurice Turrettini, Chairman of the Foundation Board. We would like to warmly thank all those involved in the organisation of the 2020 edition of GIMS. A few days before the opening of the event, the construction of the stands was very nearly complete. A week ago, during the press conferences announcing the 2020 edition, there was nothing to suggest that such a measure was necessary. The situation changed with the appearance of the first confirmed coronavirus diseases in Switzerland and the injonction of the Federal Council on 28.02.2020. The event is cancelled due to this decision. In the meantime, the dismantling of the event will now have to be organised. The financial consequences for all those involved in the event are significant and will need to be assessed over the coming weeks. One thing is certain: tickets already purchased for the event will be refunded. The organisers will communicate about this as soon as possible, via their website. Palexpo, 28 February 2020
  2. Alipay launches international e-wallet, giving foreigners access to mobile payment platform in first for China source: https://www.scmp.com/business/article/3036366/alipay-launches-international-e-wallet-giving-foreigners-access-electronic TL;DR Ant Financial unveils a 90-day ‘tour pass’ programme for short-term visitors to pay for online purchases through its Alipay platform China received 30.5m international tourists in 2018 who spent US$73.1 billion from lodging to shopping and food, Ant Financial say Without a Chinese bank account and a local mobile phone line, foreigners have found it difficult, if not impossible, to find any smartphone app to pay for online purchases in China. That hurdle will be now removed under a pioneering effort by Alipay. Ant Financial Services Group, which operates one of China’s two dominant e-payment platforms, will give foreign visitors to the mainland access to its mobile payment platform from Tuesday, according to a statement. It will allow visitors up to 90 days’ usage of its smartphone application without requiring a local bank account or mobile phone number, it added. Ant Financial is an associate of Alibaba Group Holding, which in turn is the owner of The South China Morning Post. Under the programme called ‘Tour Pass’, the company will introduce an international version of its Alipay app for download and registration using their international phone numbers. The app will enable visitors to pay for their transactions using a 90-day prepaid card from the Bank of Shanghai. The move will open the door for Ant Financial to extend its dominance in the home market and tap into growing tourism in the world’s second-largest economy. China received 30.5 million of foreign visitors in 2018, an increase of 4.7 per cent from the previous year. They spent about US$73.1 billion in lodging, food, shopping, among others, Ant Financial estimates. The international version of the Alipay app is not being made available for Hong Kong and Macau mobile phone users, Ant Financial said. There is a mobile payment solution called Alipay HK for Hong Kong users, which is different from the mainland version. To gain access to China’s mobile payment services, Hong Kong residents can open a Chinese bank account through Bank of China (Hong Kong), one of the city’s three currency issuers, without having to do so onshore. Ant Financial said the 90-day prepaid card can be reloaded using their international debit or credit cards. The minimum top-up is 100 yuan, with the balance capped at 2,000 yuan. Users can top up “multiple times” and Alipay has set an undisclosed but “reasonable” ceiling, it said. Alipay competes with Tencent Holdings’ WeChat Pay for dominance in China’s cashless economy. Both operators have more than 90 per cent penetration rate among internet users, according to a 2018 report on China’s third-party mobile payments market by research firm Ipsos. Alipay, together with its local e-wallet partners across Asia, serves more than 1.2 billion users on its platform, according to its statement.

  11. Does anybody have experience with grooming with Cars International? They have numerous outlets in many carparks. I enquired about the package and the following was quoted. $688 for 3 years, includes 1 VIP treatment and 1 free transfer (from one car number plate to another). With this package one can wash and vacuum for $13 each time for unlimited number of times and also do grroming for $488 each time for unlimited number of times. Is this a standard price? Im new to grooming and feel like this is very expensive. Can any current or past user comment? Thank you.
  12. http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/singapore/despite-longer-hours/1204752.html Survey found that singapore teachers work an average of 48 hours a week - 10 hours longer than the global average - of which 17 hours are used for teaching, and only 5 hours a week are spent on administrative duties (I suppose this includes CCA and meetings). Is this even believable?? Or because this is just average number and the standard deviation is very large? I know some teachers complain 60 hr+ spent on work a week. And one mindless meeting is already 2 hr at least. On the other hand, only lower secondary school teachers were surveyed - so how can this justify being generalized for the entire population of teachers nation-wide? MOE of course puts a positive spin to it, and says our teachers work extra because they want to do the best for students (and not because of extra admin stuff dreamed up by them?) What is interesting is that, up north: https://sg.news.yahoo.com/malaysian-teachers-spend-29pc-time-admin-says-study-005400214.html "On average, Malaysian teachers spend 17 hours each week teaching, compared to the survey average of 19 hours. In comparison, they spend six hours per week planning and preparing lessons, and seven hours per week marking and correcting work." That means only 4 hours on admin duties. All sounds very comparable, actually, maybe due to similarities in education systems inherited from same british colonial history.

  18. Hi Guys, As i'm planning for a getaway this coming march, i have decided to book a villa located in phuket. However, this villa is not a hotel managed and it is managed by "agents"and private owner. The payment mode is rather complicated. They requires bank transfer of 25% downpayment of the total sum and another 500USD as security deposit. My question is, is it safe? I've did my own diligence checks on and i don't find anything fishy. Agent replied in good english, they provide facebook page and many reviews from online. The villa i'll be booking is this. http://patonghill.com/5-bedroom-villa/ & http://privatevillarent.com/property/dvr29...g-luxury-villa/ They are actually the same villa but i believed managed by different agent as the quoted price is the same. Is there any insurance provided like ""paypal" where bank will provide some sort of protection against such claims if it happens to be a scam? Checked with my banking friends and was told that normally bank will not protect against such claims and we have to do it at our own risk. In fact, the agent did sent me the villa's owner banking details. I checked on the bank and it was indeed a vaild thailand based bank. Anyone experience such international transfer before?
