  1. In this digital era, our government need to take network reliability and cyber security seriously. Unlike the in the case of service disruption brought upon by DBS and M1 in the past few months, if hospital network is down and the doctor are not able to retrieve patient's record timely, it could be a life and death situation! Websites of Singapore public hospitals, polyclinics down due to 'internet access disruption' Source: https://www.channelnewsasia.com/singapore/singapore-hospitals-errors-websites-not-loading-healthcare-polyclinics-3888231 SINGAPORE: The websites of all public hospitals and polyclinics in Singapore were down on Wednesday (Nov 1), with users reporting errors when trying to access them in the morning. Attempts to access the websites produced error messages saying their URLs could not be retrieved. The issue is due to an "internet access disruption" affecting all public healthcare clusters, said Synapxe, the national health tech agency. "Services requiring internet applications like websites, emails and the NUHS (National University Health System) contact centre are inaccessible," said the agency at about 1.45pm. It added that clinical services within the public healthcare network, such as access to patient records, remain accessible and unaffected. "We are currently working to resolve the issue and apologise for any inconvenience caused," said Synapxe, whose website was also inaccessible. The agency supports the operations of 46 public healthcare institutions, including acute hospitals and polyclinics, as well as around 1,400 community partners such as nursing homes and general practitioners. Singapore's public healthcare system is grouped into three clusters - SingHealth which runs hospitals and polyclinics in the east, the National Healthcare Group in the central region and NUHS in the west. The websites of Singapore General Hospital, National University Hospital and Tan Tock Seng Hospital were among those affected. The website of the Agency for Integrated Care (AIC) was also inaccessible. Websites of private hospitals, such as Mount Elizabeth Novena and Raffles Medical Group, appear to be unaffected. The Ministry of Health and HealthHub websites were working. CNA has contacted the hospitals, healthcare clusters, AIC and the Infocomm Media Development Authority for more information. This is a developing story. Please check back for updates.

  4. Huge parts of internet currently offline A number of leading websites are currently not working, including Amazon, Reddit and Twitch. The UK government website - gov.uk - is also down as are the Financial Times, the Guardian and the New York Times. Affected websites displayed the message: "Error 503 Service Unavailable". Early reports suggested it could be related to Fastly, a cloud computing provider, which underpins a lot of major websites. Fastly said it was looking into problems with its global content delivery network (CDN). In an error message posted just before 11am BST Fastly said it was "currently investigating potential impact to performance with our CDN services." It has not yet provided a formal statement. https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-57399628
  5. https://mothership.sg/2020/08/internet-explorer/ Microsoft to end Internet Explorer by Aug. 17, 2021 Tech-giant Microsoft has announced on Aug. 17 that it will gradually stop supporting its web browser Internet Explorer (IE). According to the Microsoft 365 blog, Microsoft Teams web app will stop supporting IE 11 from Nov. 30, 2020. The remaining Microsoft 365 apps and services will stop supporting IE 11 from Aug. 17, 2021, about one year from now. Replacing IE will be the Microsoft Edge, which is more similar to Google Chrome as it is based on Google's Chromium open-source project. This new browser also supports Chrome browser extensions and have the features that you find on Google Chrome. Microsoft users will instead transit to a new Microsoft Edge browser. The Edge browser will be part of the new devices and future Windows feature updates. The Microsoft 365 blog explained that the new Edge browser will provide a better online experience: "Customers have been using IE 11 since 2013 when the online environment was much less sophisticated than the landscape today. Since then, open web standards and newer browsers—like the new Microsoft Edge—have enabled better, more innovative online experiences." Internet Explorer was released 25 years ago, in August 1995. It was once the most-used web browser globally, with 95 per cent user share in 2003. With the rise of other alternatives such as Firefox and Google Chrome, Internet Explorer began losing its dominance, BBC reported in 2010.

  8. World Internet Speed Record Is Now 178,000 Gbps source: https://www.lowyat.net/2020/219707/world-internet-speed-record-178-tbps/ A research team at the University College London (UCL) has recently set a world record for the fastest Internet speed in the world. Done in collaboration with Xtera and KDDI Research, the effort was led by Dr Lidia Galdino who is a lecturer at the university’s Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, and also a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellow. Said to be a fifth faster than the previous record, the data transmission speed that the UCL research team managed to achieve is 178 Terabits per second (Tbps) which is equivalent to 178,000 Gigabits per second (Gbps). To put things into perspective, that is around 2 million times faster than the average fixed broadband download speed in Malaysia for July 2020, according to Ookla Speedtest Global Index. According to the announcement by UCL, its research team was able to achieve the insane speed level by transmitting data using a much larger bandwidth than what a typical optical fibre has. As a comparison, the researches utilise a bandwidth of 16.8THz while the current implementation ranges from 4.5 to 9THz. Interesting enough, UCL pointed out that the technique used to achieve the world record can be implemented in existing infrastructure just by upgrading the amplifiers within optical fibre routes at 40 to 100km intervals. In fact, the university claimed that it is way more affordable to perform the upgrade instead of installing new optical fibres. Now, don’t forget that this speed record was achieved inside a lab. So, many things need to be addressed first before we can see the technique being adopted by the industry but nevertheless, it is always good to see researchers kept on trying to push technology boundaries further.
  9. https://www.straitstimes.com/singapore/transport/click-and-buy-a-hyundai-car-online-from-friday Buy your next car in the same way that you do with veggies and DVDs? Actually I bought my car in Oz online more than 10 years ago, and saved $8000. So I am already a supporter. If there are substantials savings, and everything is in black and white, why not? Plus you don't need to see the 'face color' of the sales rep, and if you are in another country, you won't be charged more due to any racial bias and you can choose all specs according to your needs.

  15. It’s Official: Singapore Second Most Internet Addicted In The World http://vulcanpost.com/42511/singaporeans-most-addicted-internet/ Singapore and India have finally found one thing in common. Over half of the citizens in both the countries can’t spend half a day, or 12 hours, without the internet. The survey was done by Tata Communications, the mobile and internet service-providing arm of the biggest Indian conglomerate, Tata Industries. According to the study, Indians are slightly ahead with 54% Indians becoming net-addicted, beating Singapore’s 52% with a thin margin. Tata Communications, which owns both Tata Docomo and Tata Indicom, also found out that 43% Singaporeans spend at least 6 hours a day surfing the web. India beats this number also at a margin with 46% people spending 6 hours a day surfing internet. According to the survey, If internet is down, the average time they can wait for the service to resume is 7.3 hours. They seem more resilient compared to 25% of Americans who can not survive for 5 hours without the internet. The survey also looks at the value of an internet connection to Singaporeas. While 27% Singaporeans would give up TV, and 20% would give up chocolates in favour of internet, a whopping 38% Singaporeans would give up alcohol to have an internet connection. The last one is certainly a relief. 82% of Singaporeans also believes that the best feature of internet is to connect people globally while just 5% believe it gives a democratic channel for freedom of speech However, people are not as internet educated as you might expect. 62% Singaporeans think internet has unlimited capacity (and the ISPs are not giving them enough bandwidth) while 69% think world wide web and internet are the same thing. Both are popular mistakes. These aren’t the only misconceptions, as survey shows that 2 out of every 3 French don’t know internet ‘resides’ in the data centres. The implications of this study is worrying. When a part of technology, which doesn’t always add value, should not become this integrated into any life. In fact, this addiction has given us a new word, FOMO or “Fear Of Missing Out”. Believe it or not, 80% or every 4 out of 5 internet-using Indians are suffering from this. In another survey, Tata Communications also find out that, 64% of respondents admit to ‘Fear of Missing Out’ (FOMO), with 80% of Asian respondents displaying negative emotions when not connected to the Internet. Where is this trend taking us? With smartphones, smartwatches, computers, laptops, tablets, phablets, digitally connected doorbells to toaster ovens (it could happen soon), will we soon justify the weird sci-fi movies where everything is connected and human are implanted with chips to be organically connected? Will the whole human race be connected and controlled by some network of megacomputers? When you think about it, we’re not so far away.

A recent OECD report confirms this: Computers 'do not improve' pupil results - latest OECD report warned. The OECD's education director Andreas Schleicher says school technology had raised "too many false hopes.. http://www.bbc.com/news/business-34174796 The report also mentioned: Students who use computers very frequently at school get worse resultsStudents who use computers moderately at school, such as once or twice a week, have "somewhat better learning outcomes" than students who use computers rarelyThe results show "no appreciable improvements" in reading, mathematics or science in the countries that had invested heavily in information technology.High achieving school systems such as South Korea and Shanghai in China have lower levels of computer use in school.Singapore, with only a moderate use of technology in school, is top for digital skills
