AUSTRALIAN HACKERS apparently have hijacked Apple's Find My iPhone feature, enabling them to hold iOS and Mac device owners to ransom. iPhone, iPad and Mac users have taken to Apple's support forum to complain about the hacking, in which hackers use the Find My iPhone feature to remotely lock users' devices and send messages demanding money. One user wrote, "I went to check my phone and there was a message on the screen (it's still there) saying that my device(s) had been hacked by 'Oleg Pliss' and he/she/they demanded $100 USD/EUR (sent by paypal to lock404(at)hotmail.com) to return them to me." http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/2346670/hackers-hijack-find-my-iphone-to-hold-ios-and-mac-users-to-ransom

  15. Apple will take its latest step toward the conquest of car dashboards at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show this week. The tech giant will unveil CarPlay, a new way to integrate an iPhone into the infotainment systems of certain new cars. The system was known in development as iOS in the Car, and demonstrates Apple's interest in the automotive market. CarPlay allows drivers to make calls, access messages, play music, and use Apple Maps hands free. This can be done either through the car's infotainment controls, or by pressing a voice command button and using Siri. The call and messaging functions operate basically the same as with the standalone Siri Eyes Free system already available on some models. Siri both reads text messages to the driver and responds to voice commands which--in theory--means he or she shouldn't have to look away from the road at all. Drivers can also prompt Siri to read directions generated by Apple Maps. CarPlay can also anticipate directions based on recent trips, and the driver's contacts and e-mail. Soon, your car will literally be able to anticipate your every move. CarPlay users can also stream music from their phones through the car's sound system, as well as access iTunes Radio and certain third-party apps, including iHeartRaido and Spotify. As with the rest of the system, drivers can either use their cars' controls or Siri voice commands. CarPlay will launch at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show, and will be available initially on select models from Ferrari, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo. It will later be globally offered on models from: BMW, Ford, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Jaguar-Land Rover, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, PSA Peugeot Citroen, Subaru, Suzuki, and Toyota. The system will be packaged as an iOS 7 software upgrade on Lightning-equipped phones (iPhone 5 or later). You find out more about the iOS CarPlay at Apple's CarPlay microsite. CarPlay features Siri voice control and is specially designed for driving scenarios. It also works with your car’s controls — knobs, buttons, or touchscreen. And the apps you want to use in the car have been reimagined, so you can use them while your eyes and hands stay where they belong.

  17. Alleged iPhone 6 Prototype Depicted in New Images A set of images depicting what could be a prototype of the next-generation iPhone were first shared with MacRumors by an anonymous Twitter user earlier today. Australian writer Sonny Dickson, who also shared some of the same images, told MacRumors that they were initially shared by someone in China who claimed the images show the "iPhone 6". It is entirely unclear whether the device in the images is a legitimate iPhone 6 prototype or whether it is a fake. Early prototypes of the iPhone 5s and the iPhone 5c exhibited a blank rear shell while the iPhone 6 shell in the picture clearly shows FCC text that is generally added to the phone at a later date. There are also no plastic or glass cutouts for an antenna, something the current-generation iPod Touch -- which sports a similar aluminum-bodied design -- has next to its rear-facing camera. We asked designer Federico Ciccarese to conduct some measurements based on the photos and he believes the iPhone in the images is 4.7 inches diagonally and 2.3 inches wide, the same width as the existing iPhone 5s. iPhone 5s overlayed. iPhone 5s dimensions (mm) in red. iPhone 6 dimensions in blue. iPhone 6 Dimensions: 2.3" x 5.1" with 4.7" Diagonal Screen Rumors have suggested the iPhone 6 will be manufactured in multiple sizes, with rumors pegging one phone at approximately 4.7 inches and a second between 5.5 and 5.7 inches. The screen may also be bezel-free, similar to competing phones from companies like Samsung. A report from earlier today indicated the iPhone 6 may be thinner and lighter than the existing iPhone 5s, thanks to advancements in LED backlighting technology. The device in the images is indeed thinner, taking on a curved-edge design much like the existing iPod touch, the iPad mini, and the iPad Air. The iPhone 6 may also include a sapphire glass display, which is both thin and durable. It is also believed that the iPhone 6 will be equipped with the Touch ID fingerprint authentication system first introduced with the iPhone 5s. Even if these images are fake, they give a good idea of what a larger screened iPhone 6 could look like. More images below. source http://www.macrumors.com/2014/02/12/alleged-iphone-6-prototype/
  18. WTF! STOMPer L says his friend, who was on holiday here, was charged $10,103 when he purchased two iPhone 5 handsets at a shop in Lucky Plaza. Said the STOMPer: "Last Friday (Nov 16), a foreign friend of mine shopped at a phone shop at Lucky Plaza. He bought 2 iphone 5s (32 G) at the shop known as EOne Mobil Plus Pte Ltd at Orchard Road, Lucky Plaza, unit B1-48. "My friend was told it cost S$1,150 per phone and he agreed and paid them cash S$2,550 including GST for 2 iphone 5s. After that they asked him for his passport to register his iPhone with the Apple Store. "When they returned his passport and handed him a receipt to sign and he did, after that the shop people demanded him to pay the balance of S$7,500 for his purchase of two iPhones. My foreign friend was shocked to learn he had to pay so much money before they could release the phone to him. "My friend called me after he spent much time asking for the return of his money but in vain. Finally he had to call for help, and I went down to Lucky Plaza to see what I could do for him. "I was deeply upset when the shop people told me that my friend agreed to pay S$10,103 for the phones, and he had signed on the receipt. "I called the police on the spot and the police came, but not much that the police could do for us. Because what the police claimed was that this is a willing-seller-willing-buyer case, hence they could not intervene. "I was very upset then, and finally my foreign friend had to gave in because he had to catch a flight to return to his country the same evening. Finally, he paid S$4,280 for two iPhone 5s (inclusive of GST). "I still have the receipt showing the S$10,103 that my friend was initially charged for 2 iPhone 5s. I hope there will be not be another victim of the similar case in the future." STOMP understands that an iPhone 5 32GB handset retails for about $1,088 in Singapore.

  21. Singapore's SingTel has developed an application to rival the voice-activated Siri on the iPhone 4S that is sure to go down well in the island state -- because it can understand "Singlish". When Apple unveiled its latest handset earlier this month most of the talk was about Siri, which can give directions or even advice to users simply by asking a question into the speaker. However, since the new phone went on sale there have been numerous reports of Siri either responding with a completely irrelevant answer or simply saying it does not understand. YouTube videos of Siri misinterpreting the heavily accented words of iPhone 4S users in Japan -- the first Asian country to get the device on October 14 -- have been widely circulated on the Internet. But Singapore Telecom (SingTel) says its new app, DeF!ND, will help Singaporeans who use "Singlish" -- a localised form of English with words borrowed from Asian languages -- avoid such problems. SingTel said DeF!ND is a localised Siri-like application that is able to decipher uniquely Singaporean accents, names and locations. It made its public debut at the stroke of midnight Thursday, when SingTel Singapore chief executive Allen Lew gave it an instruction in a decidedly local accent as he launched the iPhone 4S in the city-state. "We have a voice application capability in DeF!ND that is unique because it understands the local language... which the voice recognition engine within an international device like Apple doesn't quite have," Lew said after the launch. "When we tried to test different voice recognition systems including... Siri, we found that the Singaporean accent is pretty unique and the common international voice recognition systems don't quite pick up the nuance of how we speak," Lew added. "And of course our street names and our food names are very local so we developed and trained this new system to allow it to recognise it better." DeF!ND will be available for free on the Android platform and Apple's iTunes "soon," a Singtel spokesman told AFP.
