  3. http://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne%2BNews...310-267457.html 68-year-old retiree was jailed two years for illegally issuing loans and making $12,000 in profits. - AsiaOne Thu, Mar 10, 2011 AsiaOne SINGAPORE - A 68-year-old retiree who was sentenced to jail yesterday and fined $150,000 for running a loan shark racket was identified by Shin Min Daily News as the father of Singapore's retired swim queen, Joscelin Yeo, who is also currently a Nominated Member of Parliament (NMP). The Straits Times reported yesterday that Lawrence Yeo was arrested in January and pleaded guilty to five of seven charges of illegal money lending. He had forked out $80,000 to set up his illegal money-lending operation with one maid, 27-year-old Honey Irene Busto Pande. He and Pande charged 15 per cent on the loans, and illegally lent money to 300 people - all of them maids - between June 2010 and January 2011, with sums between $100 and $700. He lent out an estimated $10,000 and made $12,000 in profit from the loans they gave out - which he split equally with Pande, according to Deputy Public Prosecutor Qiu Huixiang. He later roped in three more maids, who were also his debtors, to be his runners. The three, Amparo Cacayuran Gayo, 36, Monalisa Carlos Siriban, 30 and Ma Consuelo Gonzales Deinla, 44, lent out money at an interest rate of 20 per cent, and made 5 per cent from the loans they issued. Shock over news that loan shark is NMP's dad Click on thumbnail to view (Photos: ST) Pande was sentenced to 18 months' jail and a fine of $150,000. The other three maids were sentenced to three to six months' imprisonment and given fines of up to $60,000 as they had played lesser parts in the operation. A reporter from the Chinese evening daily visited the family's home in Bukit Batok. A domestic helper there confirmed that the house belonged to Yeo. But she stopped answering questions after further enquiries on whether she knew Joscelin Yeo. Neighbours said that the family moved into the house about four to five years ago, but only Yeo, one of his sons and the maid remained in the house, after Joscelin got married last year, and his wife passed away in 2009. The family does not interact often with the neighbours. The Chinese daily did not manage to contact Joscelin Yeo for comments. In 2001, Yeo also had a brush with the law. On Nov 19, 1999, he molested his former Indonesian maid at his home in Namly Drive when she was in the kitchen pouring him a glass of water. He was jailed for 10 months, but escaped caning because of his age.

  6. CNA Latest : Teacher jailed for sending lewd SMSes By Leong Wee Keat | Posted: 16 December 2010 1315 hrs SINGAPORE: A former primary school teacher was on Thursday jailed 10 months by a District Court for sending a series of lewd messages to male teenagers to get them to commit indecent acts. Thirty-three-year-old Chock Soon Seng committed the offences between 2008 and May 2009 when he was teaching at a government primary school, the Court heard. He was single and had taught for the past six years at the time of the offences. Chock met his first victim, a secondary two student, through an online chat portal in 2008. Chock identified himself as "Alex". A few days later, Chock sent the victim, then 13, a lewd message and suggested they perform an indecent act together. The boy declined the suggestion but Chock repeatedly messaged the victim requesting to meet up. Chock followed up with a video call asking the boy to perform a sexual act for him to see. The boy hung up. On October 2, 2008, Chock sent more than 40 SMSes in a final attempt to get the boy to perform the act via a video call. Feeling disturbed, agitated and disgusted, the boy reported the matter to his mother and lodged a police report the next day. Seven months later, Chock again attempted the same ruse on a secondary one student, who was studying at an adjacent school where the ex-teacher worked. The boy reported the matter to the police and his school's discipline master. Following a telephone conversation with the discipline master, Chock agreed to show up at a neighbourhood police post an hour later. When confronted, Chock admitted sending lewd messages and apologised to the boy's parents. In mitigation, Chock's lawyer, Mr Anthony Lim, said the former teacher was truly remorseful. Chock did not target his own students nor did he persist after the victims blocked his calls, added Mr Lim. The lawyer sought a week's jail and fine for his client. But Deputy Public Prosecutor Edmund Lam said the former primary school teacher "led a double life of trying to defile the innocence of and corrupt young persons". "He would have clearly known that procuring such acts over a video call (with) school children was clearly wrong and abhorrent," added Mr Lam. Chock could have been jailed up to two years and fined S$5,000 for each of his two offences. Chock has appealed against his sentence and is now out on S$20,000 bail. -CNA/wk
  7. Gang leader gets 18 years' jail for two killings By Alethea Lim Court Correspondent AT 16, Balachandran Bernard became the section head of the '369' secret society. For giving the go-ahead, Balachandran bore responsibility for the assaults. --WONG KWAI CHOW The middle child in a family of three boys, he assumed the top position in the gang's Teban Gardens area after the then section head was sent to jail. Balachandran, who was educated only up to Primary 5, had been recruited into the gang three years earlier. His new position included reporting the group's activities to the gang's main leader. He also became a mentor for those members who went to him for help. A year after his release, , he ordered two separate attacks which resulted in two men being killed and a third being injured seriously. Yesterday, Balachandran, now 20, was sentenced to 18 years' jail and the maximum 24 strokes of the cane. He had on Tuesday pleaded guilty to two counts of manslaughter while being part of an unlawful assembly and one charge of causing grievous hurt with dangerous weapons while part of a gang. His lawyer, Mr S.S. Dhillon, said the youth never laid a finger on the two men whom his gang battered to death. Balachandran had only participated in the assault on Mr Nasir Din Meera Sahib, 37. But Judicial Commissioner Woo Bih Li disagreed and said that 'the person who gave the go-ahead is no less responsible than the attackers' and should bear primary responsibility for the assaults. The first attack happened at East Coast Park , where the gang assaulted Mr Hamzir Hamin, 41, using wooden poles and metal rods. Mr Hamzir died in hospital from multiple head injuries four days later. On Oct 15, the gang set upon Mr Nasir Din and his friend, Mr Roslan Mohamed, 31, with parangs. The pair were at a pub in City Plaza in Geylang Road celebrating Mr Roslan's birthday. Mr Roslan died at the scene from a neck wound while his friend received 50 slashes and spent 15 days in hospital with injuries to his arms, back, neck, scalp and chest. The attacks on both occasions were unprovoked. Balachandran went on the run but was arrested last July in Johor Baru. In a statement read out in court, victim Nasir Din said: 'They slashed me a few times on my back. I was bleeding all over my body.' When he collapsed, the gang continued slashing him. 'I thought I was going to die,' recalled the father of two children, aged 13 and six months. Mr Nasir Din stopped work because of his injuries. He has already spent about $30,000 on his medical bills. 'I have to live with the ordeal of losing a good friend and being a burden to my family. I will never forget this terrifying incident for the rest of my life,' he said.

Tay, who is from Hou Gang Avenue, Singapore, committed the offence at Km18.3 of the Lima Kedai- Nusajaya Highway on May 30. He was driving a car when caught speeding during an operation by traffic policemen. The operation was being monitored by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). Tay offered RM50 (S$21.50) to constable Muhammad Afizi Salleh for not issuing a summons despite the policeman advising him not to do so. Tay, who was unrepresented, said he had to borrow from relatives to pay the fine. He appealed to judge Habibah Mohamed Yusof for leniency as he was the sole breadwinner of his family with two young children. MACC deputy public prosecutor Noorfazlin Hamdan said Tay's punishment should be a deterrent to the public.

Ong Peoy Kuan, 61, offered a RM100 (S$42) bribe to Kons Muhammad Hafiz Aziz near the Lima Kedai toll plaza at about 5pm on May 30 to not take action against him for exceeding the speed limit. In mitigation, Ong's lawyer G.K. Sritharan said the accused was a first-time offender and was suffering from kidney disease as well as diabetes. "He has deeply regretted his actions and has fully repented," he said. "He has saved the court's time and expenses by admitting to the charge." DPP Abdul Ghafar Abdul Latiff argued for the maximum sentence to be imposed, saying that offering a bribe to a civil servant was a very serious offence. Ong paid the fine.

  20. HIS mother had hoped that her lover would become his stepfather and help to raise him after her marriage ended. Instead, her boyfriend became jealous of the toddler because he felt she cared more for her son than him. As they argued frequently, his temper became worse and he grew more impatient with the boy. On the day Muhammad Izzul Salihin Muhammad Farzid turned 3 on 14 Jan last year, tragedy struck. MISSED: In this file picture, Mr Muhammad Farzid shows a photo of his son as a baby in his wallet. TNP FILE PICTURES The boyfriend bashed him so brutally that the toddler became brain-dead and died in hospital four days later. Firdaus Abdullah, 27, was yesterday jailed for seven years and given 12 strokes of the cane after a nine-day trial. He was convicted of causing grievous hurt and ill-treating the boy. The day before the tragedy, the couple had fought over Izzul. His mother, Madam Nadiyana Yacoub, shouted at Firdaus to leave her flat as she wanted to find a better stepfather for her son. This incensed Firdaus. The next day at about 7.30am, Madam Nadiyana went to the Syariah Court for her divorce proceedings, leaving Firdaus to look after Izzul. Soon after she left, the boy started crying because he wanted his mother. Firdaus tried to pacify him but to no avail. Frustrated by the incessant crying, Firdaus shouted at Izzul and made him stand in the bedroom and face the wall. When the boy ended up crying even louder, Firdaus snapped. He hit and punched Izzul's face and forehead again and again. He also hit the boy's chin with an upward punch. He then grabbed Izzul's face, lifted him and swung him in the air before slamming his head against the bedroom's door frame. He pulled down the boy's diapers, grabbed his penis, then shook, squeezed, pinched and pulled it violently. Firdaus then bit his genitals, right thigh and nose. He finally gave Izzul a hard slap on his back. By the time he was done, the boy's cries had become softer. Sensing something amiss, Firdaus went to ask his neighbours for help to call for an ambulance. The boy was rushed to KK Women's and Children's Hospital with multiple injuries. He underwent emergency surgery and was warded in the intensive care unit. But he died without waking four days later. Earlier attack The court also heard that Firdaus had also hit Izzul two days before the fatal attack. He was angry after the boy kept crying and refused to let Firdaus towel him dry after his shower. Firdaus clenched his fist and hit the boy on his head, causing him to fall on his buttocks. He hit Izzul so hard that his own knuckles became swollen. Firdaus had moved in with Madam Nadiyana in her rental flat at Jalan Minyak, off Chin Swee Road, in late 2007 and agreed to be Izzul's stepfather, the court was told. But he became jealous because he felt she was closer to her son. He complained about how she paid more attention to the boy and also about how she spent more time with him. They argued frequently over this and by December 2007, Firdaus had become bad-tempered, frustrated, stressed and impatient with the boy. He was originally charged with murder, but it was later reduced to one charge of causing grievous hurt and two charges of ill-treating a child. In his defence, he claimed that the boy had fallen down twice after the beatings. He also said that he had tried to resuscitate the boy after his fall. But Deputy Public Prosecutor Royce Wee said that even if Firdaus did try to save the boy, it was clearly 'too little, too late'. He added that his brutal and savage attacks had inflicted serious injuries on a young and defenceless child, causing him to die. Firdaus did not have a lawyer. He had nothing to say in his mitigation. Izzul's father, Mr Muhammad Farzid, 30, and grandmother were in court yesterday for the sentencing. His mother did not show up. Till today, Mr Muhammad Farzid still can't understand how Firdaus could have attacked his son so viciously. He told The New Paper that he had doted on his only child so much that he could not bear to scold or beat him when he misbehaved. He said it really hurt to see how badly he was beaten up, and that it's still painful just to think of him now. He carries a photo of Izzul in his wallet, and there isn't a day when he doesn't think of him. The photograph is all that he's left with now, he said. Mr Muhammad Farzid, who used to be a general worker at a mosque, visits his son's grave at the Choa Chu Kang Muslim Cemetery every month. He is no longer in touch with his ex-wife. Their marriage fell apart in 2007 and he moved out. He last saw his son a week before the tragedy when the boy accompanied his mother to court. Izzul was lively and cheerful and had called him 'daddy', he recalled. Mr Muhammad Farzid said the day Izzul was born, on 14 Jan, 2005, was the happiest day of his life. 'He's my first child and his birth symbolised my next generation,' he said. 'That day, I put down my work and rushed to the hospital to witness his birth. I was so happy.' Izzul was born two months' premature and had to be warded for three months. Exactly three years later, he was back at the same hospital, praying for his little boy to pull through. 'He should have been celebrating his third birthday instead, cutting his birthday cake and surrounded by people who love him,' said Mr Muhammad Farzid, tears welling up. 'I only managed to celebrate two birthdays with him, and then he was gone.' For causing grievous hurt, Firdaus could have been jailed seven years and caned. For ill-treating a child, he could have been jailed four years and fined $4,000. ******************************************************************************** *************************** Reading this story really make my blood boiled, this type of man also have... a innocent young life is lost just because of some lousy fellow.... Really feel sad for the young boy..

  22. can this be used as a precedent for those 'ricers' who caused death of innocents? which is worse? use handphone and beat red light, then killed someone or some arses ricers thinking they are the kings of the road, speed and then killed someone or 2? in any case, jail term and fine cannot bring back a life. -------- Editor jailed 18 months for fatal crash By Khushwant Singh A NEWSPAPER editor was sentenced to 18 months jail on Thursday for maiming a motorcyclist and causing the death of his pillion rider on Christmas Eve two years ago. Lim Hong Eng, 56, of Shin Min Daily News, was jailed 18 months for causing the death of pillion rider Melania Melaniawati, 24, and six months for grievously hurting the Indonesian maid's employer David Jermais Pattiselanno. The sentences will run concurrently. She could have been jailed up to five years and fined. Her lawyer Subhas Anandan said the sentences were 'manifestly excessive' and served notice to appeal. (is SUBHAS aware that her client killed someone becuase of her action!?? ) Lim was granted $20,000 bail on the two charges. She also faces another charge of driving while using a cellphone, for which a pre-trial conference will be held on Sept 11. Bail of $3,000 was given for this count. On that rainy Christmas Eve in 2006, Lim's car hit Mr Pattiselanno's motorcycle at the junction of Whitley and Dunearn roads. Mr Pattiselanno, 70, had stopped along Dunearn Road to wait for the lights to change before proceeding to buy festive goodies. When he tried to move forward, his motorbike was hit by Lim's Toyota Wish multi-purpose vehicle. The impact flung him off his machine and he broke his leg. The retiree still needs crutches today to move about. DPP Ng had, during the trial, told the court that Lim ran a red light and hit the motorcycle. She also failed to keep a proper lookout. He added that Lim was also on her cellphone while driving. A witness had testified that she saw Lim with her left hand to the side of her face, and that Lim was holding her cellphone when she emerged from her car after the crash and made a call. The witness called the police at 3.48pm. Telephone records show that Lim called her son at home at around that time. Lim denied beating the lights and using a phone. She claimed she had raised her hand to her cheek as she was in a state of shock. She also denied being in a hurry, but DPP Ng said Lim had told the court she had a spa appointment at Raffles Town Club at 3.45pm. She was, therefore, probably concerned about being late.
