  1. Inspired by the other 1980s thread, hope this will refresh some memories especially those born 1960s or 70s. Those who weren't familiar with Japanese music would find many songs familiar from their Cantonese or Mandarin cover versions. 1. A Japanese Electric Car Just Destroyed Tesla's 0-60 Acceleration Recordhttp://fortune.com/2018/02/19/aspark-owl-electric-car-tesla/ Japan-based boutique carmaker Aspark has accomplished what until recently seemed impossible: creating a street-legal electric car that goes from 0 to 60 miles an hour in barely over 1.9 seconds. The car, called the Aspark Owl, destroys the acceleration of most of the world’s most expensive gas-powered street racers. The $3 million Bugatti Chiron has clocked 0-60 in a leisurely 2.3 seconds, while the Lamborghini Aventador does it in a positively glacial 2.7 seconds. By comparison, no less an authority than Top Gear describes the OWL’s performance as “ridiculous.” Of course, it might not be entirely fair to compare the Owl’s acceleration to high-end gas cars. Electric motors have inherently higher torque and better acceleration than gas engines at lower speeds, while gas cars can often hit 70 or 80 mph faster. A fairer comparison, then, might be to Tesla’s all-electric Model S, which last year became the fastest-accelerating production car in the world. Its billed 0-60 acceleration time is 2.5 seconds, though independent tests have seen times just under 2.3 seconds. The Owl, then, could soon become the zippiest car you’ll ever pull up next to at a stoplight—but there are two caveats. First, according to Jalopnik, the recent run was made with a set of racing tires, many of which aren’t safe or legal for everyday driving. But Aspark is working towards hitting a sub-2-second 0-60 using street-legal tires. The second condition is a bit bigger: the Owl will reportedly be priced at $4.4 million, and start with a limited production run of 50 vehicles. You could buy nearly 65 base Model S’s for that price, or about 22 of the upcoming $200,000 Tesla Roadster. That car isn’t coming until 2020, but Tesla is already promising that it can match the Owl, with a 0-60 time of 1.9 seconds.
  4. Former president of Japan's Toyota dies at 88 https://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/former-president-of-japan-s-toyota-dies-at-88-9838662 Toyota's former president Tatsuro Toyoda, who helped the Japanese auto giant establish a foothold in North America, has died at the age of 88, the company said Saturday. TOKYO: Toyota's former president Tatsuro Toyoda, who helped the Japanese auto giant establish a foothold in North America, has died at the age of 88, the company said Saturday (Jan 6). Toyoda, an uncle of current Toyota CEO Akio Toyoda, died of pneumonia on December 30, the firm said in a statement. His funeral has already been held and was attended by close relatives, but Toyota said it plans to hold a separate farewell ceremony. Toyoda joined the company - founded by his father Kiichiro Toyoda - in 1953 and in 1984 became the first president of a new firm formed by Toyota and General Motors. The California-based joint venture was part of Toyota's push to expand production and increase its share in the North American market. The plant produced nearly 8 million vehicles until its closure in 2010, according to the company. Toyoda served as Toyota president between 1992 and 1995. RIP

  6. Japanese women list the things men do that make them look cool without even realizing it https://en.rocketnews24.com/2017/11/15/japanese-women-list-the-things-men-do-that-make-them-look-cool-without-even-realizing-it/ Tiny gestures can make big differences in how these women see a man. Japan puts a lot of effort into personal appearance, as thorough grooming and stylish, seasonal attire are considered by many to be prerequisites for going out the door in the morning. But recently women on Internet forum Oshiete Goo highlighted the fact that often a man is at his most attractive when he’s not actively trying to look cool. The discussion was kicked off when one woman, going by the screen name kozakura, posted: “What are the little gestures and moments that make you think you could fall for a guy? For me, it’s when a man gets a serious look on his face when he’s putting something together or repairing something. Or when he’s talking to an animal…that gets me every time.” From there, others were quick to chime in with their personal favorites, some of which, like kozakura’s mention of household repairs, included old-fashioned masculine activities, or simply the overall atmosphere of the strong silent type. “I like the look a guy gets in his eyes when he’s driving and checks the next lane before crossing over into it.” “When he reaches up to change a lightbulb, or gets something off a high shelf and hands it to me with a smile.” “For me, more so than talkative guys, I like men who are sort of resonant. Guys who have a cool quietness to them, and who only show their smile to people they’re really close to, those are the kind of guys who get my heart racing. Seeing them smile, there’s a childlike cuteness that just pierces my heart.” But as some women pointed out, even the most mundane motions can be enough to make them feel drawn to a guy. “When a guy takes off his glasses, to casually scratch his eye, wipe the lenses, or put in eye drops.” “The way his hands look when he’s dividing up a large plate of food for everyone at the table.” “The way he walks. If I think a guy is cool or handsome, he always has a gallant stride. It’s like his attitude and life philosophy are all reflected in the way he walks.” Of course, some were willing to admit that they might be reading a bit too much into these mannerisms, such as the woman who said: “There’s something attractive about a guy who’s looking off into the distance. It’s like he’s getting ready to take on a big challenge, or chase after a fervent dream…or maybe he’s just admiring the view.” But as far as providing that initial spark of attraction, these little things can be enough. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Your thoughts?

Anyone had experience with the following: Toyota Mark X (2005 to 2011) and Nissan Teana 2.5 (previous model). The Teana is Japan made right? I don't want to buy a Thai made car. Drivers who owned these before please reply. I like to know the fuel consumption and the reliability of these vehicles.
  12. Japan dad apologises for abandoning son, thanks rescuers Photo: Reuters Tokyo - The father of a seven-year-old Japanese boy who went missing for nearly a week after his parents abandoned him in a mountain forest as punishment apologised on Friday hours after his son was found safe. "My excessive act forced my son to have a painful time," Yamato Tanooka's father told reporters outside the hospital where his son was being treated Yamato was discovered in a building on a Japanese military base around 4 km (2.5 miles) from where he disappeared last Saturday after his parents left him by the side of a road, reportedly as discipline for throwing stones at cars. "One of our soldiers was preparing for drills this morning and opened the door of a building on the base, and there he was," a member of Japan's Self-Defence Forces told NHK national television. "When he asked 'are you Yamato?' the boy said yes. Then he said he was hungry, so the soldier gave him some water, bread and riceballs." Yamato was taken to hospital for checks but was healthy except for low body temperature and would be kept overnight as a precaution, a doctor told a news conference. A tearful Takayuki Tanooka, the boy's father, thanked rescuers for their efforts and apologised for causing trouble. "We've reflected on what we did and it was really excessive," Tanooka said, his voice shaking. "We - well, we loved him before, but I hope to give him even more attention now," he said. "I deeply apologise to people at his school, people in the rescue operation, and everybody for causing them trouble," he added. Yamato's parents first said he disappeared while they foraged for edible plants, but later told police they had left him by the road to discipline him after he threw stones at people and cars. They said when they drove back a few minutes later the boy had disappeared. The area is so remote that residents of the region say they rarely go through it. The boy somehow managed to survive for nearly a week in the densely forested area, where night temperatures fell as low as 7 degrees Celsius (45 Fahrenheit) and heavy rain had fallen, despite wearing only a t-shirt and jeans. Yamato said he had "walked through the mountains" until he found the building, which was unlocked. He drank water from a nearby faucet and slept on mattresses spread on the floor. The search for Yamato gripped Japan. At its peak, it involved several hundred shouting rescuers beating through heavy bush, as well as soldiers on motorbikes and police on horseback. News programmes gave regular updates throughout the week, and NHK sent a news flash when he was found. The incident set off a flood of social media comment, with most of those posting comments lambasting the parents for their carelessness. On Friday, most expressed relief. "To be honest, I was certain of a sad result. As the parent of a 7-year-old myself, all I can say is that I am really, really happy," one wrote. http://news.asiaone.com/news/asia/japan-dad-apologises-abandoning-son-thanks-rescuers
  13. As the topic, wonder why Japanese family cars always have lower performance than same category Conti cars, Conti cars almost all used TC in their engine, even if 1.6L normal family car also can easily produce above 150hp, and with very good FC about 17km/L, but same category Japanes car non-TC only can produce 110 to 120hp and bad FC 13km/L I don't understand, since Japan is a very take care energy saving country, and TC can save fuel and increase power, except Subaru like to use TC and other maker's racing cars to use TC, why does they don't use TC on common family cars?
  14. Hey all, I further narrowed down my choice to the following 3 choices based on Fuel Consumption, Comfort and Handling after test driving 5 car models (Elantra, Kia K3, Mazda 3, Vezel, Jazz RS). I eliminated Hyundai Elantra because new model is coming out and high FC. Price is also close to Jap rivals. Eliminated KIA K3 because of same reason with Elantra, plus listed price of $84,999 stated that must trade in existing car, if not its $86,999. My as well get Jap car. If you clock 30,000km a year and you need to use your car primarily to transport your family to work and school and use it for your work secondarily. Which of these 3 models will you buy and why? 1) Honda Jazz RS $90,999 Responsive gear box, Best fuel consumption, Interior quite comfy for hatch back, pick up is best as compared to other two. Down side is 2 airbags only, small boot space and small car. Add Ons -3 year free servicing -Solar Film -Free Road Tax -Can use own insurance 2) Honda Vezel 1.5X $94,999 Most comfortable of the 3 cars listed here. Stable and good view when driving. Highest FC among the 3. Most exp among the 3. PI car has its risk. Add Ons -3 free servicing only -Solar Film -Can use own insurance 3) Mazda 3 Standard $89,988 Comfort is in the mid range of the 3, FC is also mid range. Good handling just like the Honda RS. Pick up not as good as Honda RS. Most luxurios interior among the 3 with sunroof. No fog lamps, halogen headlights. Add Ons -3 year free servicing only -Solar Film -Free Road Tax -SE giving free Reverse cam + In built GPS for the standard version. All views welcome please, especially from current car owners driving any of the cars listed.

  17. Driving a Toyota with COE expiring soon... Have started shopping for a replacement car few months back but to no avail. Have also read postings of some cars shared in this forum. The more I read, the more I'm at a loss. No car seems to have a perfect fit into the so-called "ideal" car. Hence, hope the forumers here could help to shortlist a car that best fits the following criteria: a) From AD only b) Budget - Not more than $160k c) Type - 4-door sedan preferred (will also consider SUV) d) Make - Continental or Japanese e) Capacity - Between 1400cc and 1600cc f) FC - No less than 12 km/ ltr (highway 60% + urban 40%) g) Output - Prefer a powerful sedan (no lag up slope eg. Novena Square/ Ngee Ann City multi-storey car park when fully packed with passengers) h) Reliability which can last for 10 years with no major hiccups like gear box problem, oil leaks, overheating, etc. (normal wear and tear ok) i) Servicing/ maintenance costs (by AD or credible workshops) - Not more than $15k over the 10 years ownership Understand Toyota will be a value-for-money option but this time round, hope to try something different. Certainly appreciate constructive suggestions as I would like to complete the purchase by this year. No flaming please. Thanks lots!

  19. Hi All.... I did a air-con flush around july and a few days after that, my air-con seems to be blowing out a kind of funny smell, something alike a herbal/bitter smell. Only at low speed and engine start-up would i get the smell and its only coming out from the front passenger side air vent. Anyone has faced the same situation before? Please advise. Thanks a million!!!!

  22. ....3 months..$96 mils...from pcs of paper... Big jump in COE supply from May to July as more vehicles deregistered SINGAPORE (April 16): The monthly supply of certificates of entitlement (COEs) from May to July will be increased to 6,637 from 4,705 in the three months to April - a 41% jump. A total of 19,912 COEs will be made available for the three months to July. Most of the new COEs - 2,853 - are for cars of up to 1,600cc engine capacity. The overall increase in supply is largely a result of more vehicles being deregistered, according to the Land Transport Authority (LTA). The number of vehicles reaching the 10th year of their COE life is expected to increase in the next two years, LTA said in a statement today. There were a total of 915,524 vehicles in Singapore as at Dec 31 last year. In a bid to encourage greater use of public transport, the government has kept the annual vehicle population growth rate at 0.25%.
  23. As expected from my thread title, I drive a mitsubishi lancer. I'm not very good with cars specs to be honest and I've been driving this car for nearly 9 years now. I've had very few issues with the car even though I've closed nearly 300k of mileage. Is Mitsubishi not as popular as other Japanese car brands? If so, how come? Genuinely curious.
