  3. Asking for a friend. Nov 2001 Honda Civic VTi - Paper value $34,000 - Body value $5,000 - Total scrap value now $39,000 Loan fully paid up. Is it worth for him to scrap now and top up $9,000 for a Nissan Latio 1.5A, costing $48,000. He has lost $7,800 annually for his car for past 5 years. His car's scrap value at 10th year is $14,000. If he continues to use his Civic till 10th year, his annual dep from now, for next 5 yrs till 10th year is $5,000 annually. Shd he keep his Civic or sell it and buy brand new Latio.

  5. I just found out that most of my marks on my car actually comes from the new mircofibre cloth I bought from "BIG" superstore at harbourfront. It is selling at about $1.50 for a pack of 2. Just when I tought I got a super good price for it. After using it with my QD for about three times, I felt that my car seems to have more unknown scratch appearing. At first I tought it could be from the sand or dirt when I was wiping it with my QD. Only just now, I went to wash all my cloth to make sure no sand and dirt. Went to my car again to wait for my wife and was listening to my audio. Feeling bored, I took my CDs out to wipe. At LAST! I found my cause! When I was using the cheap mircofibre cloth to wipe, very very thin scratches started to appear with each wipe! ... To be fair, the marks only appear when I am only using abit more rubbing power on the CD. I tested with the rest of my mircofibre cloth and none left as much scratches as this. The rest only left very very light marks if I am using great rubbing power. Now I am going to use those cheap cloth for my dash board and engine bay. Just when I tought all mircofibre cloth are the same. Please everyone, test your new mircofibre cloth with a CD just to make sure you got yourself a good cloth. One thing I know for sure, cheap stuffs dun come good .. and good stuffs dun come cheap ...
  6. Was just wondering what would our MCFers do should they win the lucky draw prize being offered in the DBS-Amex promotion - a black Ferarri Modena ? Let's assume COE stays in the region of $29,000 and road tax is $4222. And we haven't gone into the insurance for this baby yet.. any ideas how much?
  7. Keep engine smooth and rattle free at startup. If your engine rattles at startup it can be because your oil filter doesn't have an AntiDrainBackValve (ADBV). If you buy a cheap Fram oil filter you are doing more harm than good, even if you change your oil often. Check with your brands over there I know that PureOne or Wix/NAPA Gold have an ADBV valve. If your car rattle only at start up chances are if you use a filter with a ADBV it will be a memory! Hope that is helpful, peace Sammy
  8. for me 1/ bristle brush, good for car mat to take out all the locked sand. 2/ toilet brush, good reaching inside of car rim without getting hand burn/ rash. 3/ large feather duster, good for reaching top and all external of car to get rid of surface dust. 4/ computer plastic brush (soft bristle), good for dusting dashboard, HU, aircon vents
  9. My forum friend overseas told me this, how true is his advice?? " ............So cooling an engine may not be as exciting a subject as forced induction or high compression but it definitely should be looked at for improvement. Stock radiators ...... can use some help. Especially if you plan to use the (car) ...in any type of motorsports event. It can only help in the reliability and longetivity of the engine. It used to be fine when I was running a 2.2L-2.4L engine but I would still notice the temps go up when racing it. I started using the heater to assist in cooling. Switching over to a 2.0l really started to push the cooling system to it's limits and I would find myself flipping on the heater to help things out. At the time, we were running brand new OEM radiators and a 2 pass oil cooler. We decided to change things. I wished I switched over to my current setup years ago - a 2 row 2 and 3/4inch aluminum radiator by Griffin and a 6 pass permacool engine oil cooler. I am not running a fan shroud. If I felt I needed one I would have fashioned one but the the temp. stays at normal operating temp and so far I have not seen it rise up in temps. Even on a hot day with stop-and-go street traffic. It's been working good when seeing high revs as well as I barely see a rise in temps when pushing hard. Anyone else running aluminum radiators or engine oil cooler or both? There is another thing that I credit in helping the cooling situation...the addition of a front air dam definitely improved in the amount of air passing through the radiator. ..........." What is a 2 row 2 and 3/4inch aluminum radiator by Griffin and a 6 pass permacool engine oil cooler??..... anyone know??? Many thanks
  10. Hi all, Recently I'm discussing with my family if we should sell the 4 years old E200. It's underutilised and we thought of cutting spending. But when I checked with some dealers, it seems like all are quoting me scrap car value. ie, COE+Parf+body price. Seems like it's not quite worthed to sell 2nd hand cars in singapore. We will make about $100K loss over the 4 years (not counting the interest we paid also ). So now, I'm really wondering if we should or should not sell the car. Even if we sell the car next year, we'll still get back the same $$ except COE rebate will fall by around 3K. Honestly, I think we don't think we'll get back much money from this deal, so it's not really that we need to liquidate this car and get cash. But more of cutting spending on something we seldom use. Basically we probably drive that car once every 3 days or so. Most of the errands are done on my trusty 323 which is much cheaper to run. Any views? Thanks.
  11. My front right tyre seems to be unable to sustain air storage for long. Need to pump every 2 weeks. I have checked for nails, etc but found none. What could be the other causes? Broken shaft? My shaft has been giving klak klak sound but I am ignoring it, since I am not facing any problem on daily driving.
  12. Guys! How do you keep your car keys? I keep them in my pants side pocket, but I find it bulky to the point of being irritating! And I don't keep it together with my main bunch of keys because I don't like the jingle bell' they create when going over uneven road...

  14. Hi all, Just trying to make an informed decision here, in terms of built quality, depreciations, car problems, etc.... How long will you keep your Octavia and why. And what do you expect or have experienced mechanical/electrical/electronics failure and when. Please share which year and model of Octavia. Appreciate your feedback. Ivan
  15. There are 2 ways the catalytic converter degrades. 1. You operated and the catalytic converter is no more. 2. You used engine oil that is very high in ZDDP and your engine suffered a blow-by releasing this additive in large amounts into the cat. Either way, the cat will die. One by murder, one by slow death. When a cat degrades, the downstream oxygen sensor signals to the ECU. The ECU responds by increasing fueling and retard the ignition. This means you lose power AND have poorer FC. You have been warned.
  16. well, like the topic. how do u guys keep awake?? u ever while driving suddenly realised that u fell asleep? micro-sleeping, one minute ur on lane one and the next minute ur asleep and drifting to lane 3. especially after a heavy meal, its easier to fall asleep. i try to bring sweets along, but sometimes it doesnt help. blast my music as loud as posible, ditto on that... try as i might just forcing urself to keep ur eyes open is a feat by itself... i ever drove into a carpark to take a shrot nap b4 continuing my journey.. what do u guys think?
  17. Important Warning: Removing the thermostat to increase water flow because your vehicle is overheating is dangerous to your engine and is NOT what you want to do. Not only does the engine take longer to warm up, causing excessive metal-to-metal wear, but once the engine does warm up it can get too hot because the thermostat also controls the length of time that the water is in the radiator so as to dissipate the heat to the atmosphere.
  18. Please help me guys. I will be going to a mecanic soon but i hope the understand the problem more first before going. I have a 20 year old manual car. It starts in the morning rather fine. It is recently that after travelling for awhile, when i slow down at a red light or if im searching for parking lot in a carpark, my engine just dies suddenly. Even when i restart the engine...it seems like it is strugling and if i dont rev my engine...it has a 50-50 chance of dying again. Also..there is a meter in my car. It looks like a tap with a drop of water spilling. the extreme left of the meter has a "C" and the extreme right has a "H". Normally its at C but when this problem occurs, the needle will go all the way to "H". Please give me advice or ask me questions if you need more information.
