  6. Terrorist attacks again? [:(] From CNA: http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/world/...-in/639570.html Two killed, 36 injured in Boston Marathon blasts POSTED: 16 Apr 2013 3:40 AM BOSTON, Massachusetts: At least two people were killed and 36 wounded when two explosions struck near the finish line of the Boston Marathon on Monday, sparking scenes of panic. Police did not immediately say whether the explosions were part of a terrorist attack, but marathon organizers said it was a twin bombing and media outlets reported that other unexploded devices had been found nearby. The blasts left a street littered with blood and debris, as spectators screamed and fled, paramedics hauled away stretchers and police rushed in, according to witnesses, one of whom saw a man with his lower limbs blown off. Boston Marathon organizers said on Facebook that "two bombs" exploded near the finish line, without providing a source for the information. "We are working with law enforcement to understand what exactly has happened," it said. NBC News, citing officials, earlier reported that police had found "multiple explosive devices" in Boston, raising the possibility of a coordinated attack. The twin explosions come more than a decade after nearly 3,000 people were killed in airplane strikes on New York, Washington and Pennsylvania on September 11, 2001. At a hastily convened press conference, Massachusetts Governor Deval Patrick described a "very fluid situation" as he and other officials implored anyone with information about the incidents to call local tip hotlines. Boston Police Chief Ed Davis said there was a third explosion at the John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, but the library later said there was an electrical fire that had been extinguished without causing any injuries. A video clip posted online appeared to show one of the marathon explosions going off, apparently several feet back from the barricades and the line of national flags separating the race spectators and the street. One runner is seen staggering and then falling, while others keep going for a few more steps. Volunteers in yellow jackets cover their ears at the sound of the blast. "We saw people with their legs blown off," Mark Hagopian, owner of the Charlesmark Hotel, told AFP from the basement of a restaurant where he had sought shelter. "A person next to me had his legs blown off at the knee -- he was still alive. "It was bad, it was fast," he said. "There was a gigantic explosion... we felt wind on our faces... Police were saying: 'Get out, get out, leave, leave there may be more bombs.'" Nineteen wounded people were taken to Massachusetts General Hospital, including six who required emergency surgery, according to Alasdair Conn, head of emergency services. He added that several of the injured required "traumatic amputations" at the scene or at the hospital. Boston Medical Centre said it received 20 patients, including two children, from the site of the marathon explosions. "Most of these patients have lower leg injuries," it said in a brief statement. The Boston Police Twitter account had earlier said two people were killed and 23 wounded. Officials at the press conference declined to discuss the exact number of casualties. US President Barack Obama was notified about the incident, and his administration was in contact with state and local authorities, a White House official said. Obama called Patrick and Boston mayor Tom Menino to express his concern for the injured and to offer support. He was to make a statement at 2210 GMT. Security was stepped up in New York and Washington, as well as in Los Angeles and San Francisco. In the Big Apple, police said they were boosting security at hotels and "other prominent locations in the city." The blasts in Boston rattled US markets, sending the Dow and the S&P 500 down at the close. "Praying for those at the Boston Marathon today," said one of the US senators from Massachusetts, Elizabeth Warren. The Senate observed a moment of silence, and the House of Representatives was to follow suit. The Boston Marathon is one of the biggest annual athletic events held in the United States, with nearly 27,000 racers who must qualify to compete and tens of thousands of spectators. The race attracts world-class athletes, most of whom would have likely completed the race a couple hours before the blast went off. The video clip of the blast showed the marathon timeclock at 4:09:44. - AFP/fa
  7. Source http://therealsingapore.com/content/ava-ki...-they-would-not THIS IS A PICTURE OF AN 11 YEAR-OLD GOLDEN RETRIEVER THAT AVA PUT DOWN JUST LAST WEEK despite my family's best efforts against it. AVA has left my family and I distressed and very angry. In the span of three weeks, they have shown that they are an organisation that is not to be trusted, disorganized and negligent toward the care for the animals that they take in. We approached the organisation to help us find the owners of a lost Golden Retriever we had found along Upper Changi Road on February 27. The dog was dirty, with prominent skin irritations and no collar. She was clearly in need of care, so we took her home to bathe and feed her. We then brought her to the vet to check if she was micro-chipped With the serial number, we contacted AVA's customer service and reported the found dog. Our first intention was to return the dog to her owners. Since she was found around our neighborhood it was apparent to us that she belonged to a home nearby. Due to regulations, AVA was unable to disclose the owner's details. We have two dogs of our own and decided to have AVA take the dog in till the owner was contacted. We clearly stated our interest in helping the dog get re-homed or even adopting her ourselves. We were told the AVA service staff would pick her up within the day. On the phone, there was even mention of them visiting the dog owner's home because it was around the area. When they arrived to take her, we TOLD THEM SPECIFICALLY NOT TO PUT HER DOWN, and to contact us if they were unable to reach the owner. The Chinese gentleman who came to pick her up, assured us that they would not put her down. He even cancelled the "disposal" off the
  8. Tragic training accident The number of casualties are simply mind-boggling... Likely a tube explosion which made it a massive exploding grenade spilling thousands of deadly shrapnels all over? From ABC News: http://abcnews.go.com/US/mortar-rounds-sus...ory?id=18762644 Use of Some Mortar Rounds Suspended After Accident Kills Seven Marines By LUIS MARTINEZ (@LMartinezABC) and ALYSSA NEWCOMB (@alyssanewcomb) March 19, 2013 Seven Marines were killed and at least seven others were injured when a powerful 60mm mortar exploded in a tube during a training exercise in Nevada, the Marines said today. The Marines have issued a suspension on the use of all 60mm mortars and their associated tubes while they conduct a review of what caused a round to explode. The suspension will affect mortars used both in training and in deployed settings. The Marines, who were from the 2nd Marine Division based at Camp Lejeune, N.C., were conducting live fire maneuver training at the Hawthorne Army Depot 140 miles southeast of Reno, Nev., Sunday when Lukeman said it appeared a mortar round exploded in a tube at 9:55 p.m. MST. One sailor was among the injured in the blast, Brig. Gen. Jim Lukeman said today. A Defense official later told ABC News that the sailor was a Navy corpsman working with the unit. It was not clear where the Marines were standing or the cause of the blast, which Lukeman said is under investigation. The survivors are being treated at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno for injuries that include trauma fractures and vascular injuries, hospital spokeswoman Stacy Kendall told ABC News. Two Marines and one sailor are very seriously injured, while three Marines have serious injuries and a seventh Marine was treated for minor injuries, Lukeman said. The Marines had been training at the Hawthorne Army Depot and the nearby Mountain Warfare Training Center for the past month, Lukeman said. The training was not in anticipation of an imminent deployment, he said. The mountainous desert terrain of the 230-square-mile depot is used as a training location for special forces since it "provides a realistic simulation of the situation in Afghanistan," according to the depot's website. The depot is also used as a storage site for ammunition awaiting demilitarization. It takes several Marines to fire a 60mm mortar and they must "work together to provide constant and accurate high-angle suppressive fire," according to the Marines' website. The mortar the Marines were using is a "lightweight company mortar fired from a stationary position," Lukeman said. The Marine Corps is notifying families before releasing the identities of those who were killed. Lukeman said the names would be made public 24 hours after all the next of kin were notified. "Our first priority is to provide them the support they need during this very difficult time," he said. ABC News' Sabina Ghebremedhin contributed to this report

  11. Firstly RIP to the girl. From the way the article was written, are they hinting we shouldn't over protect childen? In all her years of schooling, Vernise Kwa had never had to take public transport to school. Anxious for her safety, and for her to get more sleep, her parents had ferried her to and from school. But when she got into junior college this year, she asked to go to school on her own. Last Friday, the 17-year-old was on her way to Serangoon Junior College from her Sengkang flat when she was hit by a minibus. The first-year junior college student suffered from liver, lung and head injuries, and was operated on three times at the Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. She died on Monday at the hospital, without coming out of her coma.

  18. After the 2 crashes at Bugis, I became a bit more careful when moving off when the light turns green. Guess what ? It saved my life and my little kid's life just now !! 18:05hrs at junction of Anthony Road Cairnhill Road (next to Environment Building). I was approaching the junction and the green light has been there for some time. Thinking there was gonna be a red Ferrari round the corner, I released my gas pedal and slowed down to a crawl before turning into Cairnhill Road. Just then a dark blue SUV ignored the red light on Cairnhill Road and sped past inches away from my bonnet !!!!! I was so stunned I jammed brake, car still partially into the junction and looked at the lights again - still GREEN IN MY FAVOUR !! I am thankful to God that I can come back home and type out this incident out.... Everyone, drive super-safe. There are a lot of crazy drivers out there.

  20. SINGAPORE: A man was sentenced on Wednesday to one week's jail and fined S$1,000 for failing to keep a proper lookout while driving, resulting in the death of a five-year-old girl in 2009. Zhao Linqian was on her way to Punggol Plaza on 1 December 2009 for her evening piano lesson when a speeding car driven by Tijan Syafiq bin Selamat fatally knocked her down. The accident threw the girl more than 40 metres away, along Punggol Field Road. On that day, the girl and her grandfather were standing at the road kerb waiting to cross the road. The court heard Tijan Syafiq's illegally-modified car was approaching at more than 70 kilometres per hour, above the speed limit of 50km/hr. The girl then suddenly let go of her grandfather's hand and started crossing the two-lane road. Her grandfather was unable to stop her in time. Tijan Syafiq's car knocked into her the moment she stepped onto the right lane. Investigation revealed the 29-year-old driver had not only failed to keep a proper lookout while driving, but had also suddenly accelerated prior to the accident. Deputy Public Prosecutor Toh Puay San noted that the girl, with her light-coloured clothing, would have been visible even at her height of 1.02 metres, if Tijan Syafiq had kept a proper lookout. Tijan Syafiq, who has a two-year-old son and whose wife is pregnant, will also have his licence revoked for five years. He is also said to be suffering from "recurrent nightmares" of the incident, according to a psychiatric report. - CNA/wk/sf Wished he had modded the brakes instead, maybe the tragedy might have been avoided.

  23. Was 20-year-old Chen Zi Xuan killed just because he touched another person's car? A cousin who did not want to be named said the entire incident started from when Mr Chen, along with two friends, was accused of touching someone else's car, evening daily Shin Min reported today. The murder happened at Havelock Road on Dec 3, between 5.30am to 6.14am, according to The Straits Times. The cousin, who heard the story from Mr Chen's friends, recounted that Mr Chen and his friends, one male and a female, were hanging out that night at Club Nana, a nightclub at Central Mall. After drinks, the group decided to meet up with four other friends at Joo Chiat Road for supper. The group was on their way to retrieve their car at the multistorey carpark at Central Square when a car that was heading upwards sailed past the group. Moments later, a group of five appeared and without warning, started beating up Mr Chen and his friends, accusing them of touching their car. The cousin said the group of five did not use any weapons. They also left the female in the group alone. After the fight, the victim was sent home by his cousin. The victim's parents then sent him to hospital. At that time, he was already unconscious. After struggling for a day, the victim was pronounced brain dead due to brain injuries at 5pm on Dec 5. When a Shin Min reporter visited the victim's wake this morning, Mr Chen's father had insisted that his son would never have caused any trouble. THIRD PERSON CHARGED A third man was charged this morning in connection with the murder. Poh Chong Heng, 27, has tattoos on his arms, legs and back. He is alleged to have been with four other men when one or more caused the death of Mr Chen at Havelock Road on Dec 3. Two others, Lee Boon Leong, 22, and Desmond Neo Han Wen, 24, have been charged with the murder of Mr Chen as well. The three are alleged to have been members of an unlawful assembly when they attacked Mr Chen. Two other accomplices are still on the run. If convicted of murder, they face the death penalty.
