  1. KUANTAN: Eleven people died in an accident involving a multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) and a lorry laden with iron ore, along the East Coast Expressway near Lanchang early yesterday morning. The dead were identified as the MPV's driver Fauzi Omar, 41, from Tanah Merah, Kelantan, Rozelan Mat Zain, 37, from Putrajaya, and nine unidentified Myanmar nationals, three of them women, aged between 25 and 35. Police found three documents that confirmed they were from Myanmar. All the bodies were taken to the Temerloh Hospital. The MPV also carried another four Myanmar nationals who sustained serious injuries. Three are said to be in critical condition and unconscious. All four have been warded in the same hospital. The lorry driver escaped unhurt. According to Temerloh OCPD Acting ACP Ahmad Fadzilah Mohamed, the accident occurred at about 4.30am at KM96.2 of the expressway, two kilometres after the Lanchang toll plaza.
  2. Supermarket worker drowns after truck plunges into sea By Asha Popatlal, Channel NewsAsia | Posted: 12 July 2007 2130 hrs SINGAPORE: A 21-year-old Sheng Siong supermarket worker died in a drowning incident on Thursday. Goh Chin Went was in a delivery truck that went under, after rolling into the sea. Two other colleagues who were with him, managed to scramble to safety. It was a tragic end for the young Malaysian worker. The incident happened at around 11am in the waters next to Lim Chu Kang's Sarimbun Scouts Camp. A Sheng Siong truck had reversed to the water's edge and parked. The workers were at the back, loading fresh fish into the truck when it started rolling into the sea. According to eyewitness accounts, Yong Chee Seng and Chua Lim Swee managed to scramble to safety by climbing onto the roof. They were later rescued by a passing fishing boat. But their colleague Goh Chin Went was not so lucky. Eyewitness Edmund Ching said, "Far away from my farm, I saw two of them on top of the lorry but I couldn
  3. Six Killed While Watching Drag Race Most of the Victims Were Children Home video captured a drag racing car heading into the audience. Six people were killed and 18 injured. (ABC News) Six spectators were killed Sunday when a drag racing car at a charity event in Tennessee lost control and careened into a crowd of people. Hundreds of spectators attending an event to raise money for disabled children were lined up along a stretch of road that had no guard rails in Selmer, Tenn., when a driver lost control of his vehicle. In addition to the six people killed, 18 more were injured, many of them children. A home video capturing the incident showed the car slamming into the crowd in the middle of a wheel-spinning trick. "He was just throwing people up like a deck of cards," one eyewitness said. "I mean it all happened so fast." Another eyewitness hinted the situation may have been preventable. "I'm just upset that this whole situation happened because there's no guard rails and you're two feet from the road," the witness said. Events like car shows and stunt shows draw large audiences, and the Tennessee tragedy raises questions about how safe it is to stand in the crowds. "It did careen into the fans, which was extremely unfortunate," said Robin Ammon, author of "Sport Facility Management" and an expert in crowd management. Ammon said these types of accidents happen all too often. "A lot of times it takes something along the lines of this kind of an incident before they really do something about it," Ammon said. Earlier this month, another crash at a drag racing event in Ohio, which also was captured on video, injured seven people, including an 11-year-old boy. There have also been a series of accidents at air shows and professional sporting events. In 2002, young Nicole Cecil died after being hit in the head with a puck at an NHL hockey game in Columbus, Ohio. "I honestly believe it was her time to go," said Cecil's mother Jody Sergent in a 2002 interview with "Good Morning America's" Diane Sawyer. "She's our angel now." Ammon said parents don't necessarily need to avoid taking their children to these sorts of events. But they should know that there are dangers and should take some precautions, like watching from a safe distance. http://www.abcnews.go.com/GMA/Story?id=3288966&page=2
  4. To whom it may concern, I was travelling on Tanjong Katong Road in the direction of Lion City Hotel on the 1st June 2007 at or about 1835H. At the traffic light controlled T-junction of Tg Katong Road and Dunman Road, the traffic lights were green in my favour, as seen from afar. My vehicle was travelling well within the speed limit on the right lane of the abovesaid road. There was an extended right lane for right turns and the lane was packed with vehicles, thus obstructing my view of the traffic from the perpendicular Dunman Road. When my vehicle was at the abovesaid junction, the lights were still green in my favour. When the full length of my vehicle was about to cross the stop line, a traffic police motorcycle shot out from the perpendicular Dunman Road right into the path I was travelling. He braked upon seeing my vehicle, raising a hand (in apology perhaps?). I had to jam my brakes in an emergency matter to avoid hitting the said motorcycle. My body lurched forward and hit the steering wheel. Thankfully, my vehicle managed to stop in time to prevent a collision, albeit less than a meter away from the said motorcycle. My heart jumped and I shuddering at the thought that I might have just killed someone or got involved in a serious accident had I not managed to brake in time. At this juncture, an escort team of several other traffic police motorcycles and a presumably escorted motorcar, of the number plate 'SEP 1' (I cannot be totally sure as it was travelling fast), passed by the abovesaid junction while the lights were against them. My vehicle was well across the stop line and in the middle of the junction. These actions are a blatant and wilful disregard of road safety. Why should the life of a rule obeying ordinary road user be put into such jeopardy for the escort of a presumed VIP? This should be doubly condemned as it came from a public enforcement authority which has ROAD SAFETY under its purview. I fully understand the need for traffic police escorts. Section 114 of the Road Traffic Act (Chapter 276) fully legalises and provides for these actions to be taken by the police. However, such discretions should be properly planned to avoid minimal inconveniences and most importantly, pay attention to the safety of other road users. The Traffic Police should look into this matter. Police officers on the road are guardians of the other road users. I, for one, will not expect and want to see the Traffic Police to play the role of a menace on the road. Imagine preaching ROAD SAFETY on one hand, and putting other road users' lives in blatant disregard on the other, just because they are empowered to do so. I expect a reply from the relevant authority as soon as possible. Thank you ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- darn traffic policeman, nearly made me kill him....

  7. Australian legend Brock dies in rally smash. By Matthew Agius Peter Brock, a nine time Bathurst 1000 winner and three-time Australian Touring Car Champion, has passed away after crashing his Daytona Coupe into a tree during a stage of the Targa West Tarmac Rally today. The incident occurred near Gidgegannup at 11.50 local (WST) time, north-east of Perth, with Brock's co-driver Mick Hone being taken to hospital with serious injuries, although in a stable condition. Having retired from fulltime touring car racing in 1997, Brock took to rally driving, becoming a frequent competitor in Targa rallies, including the recent Targa Tasmania. 9. Darn CITYCAB taxi Last night, I was coming down Upper Paya Lebar Road and was turning left onto Airport Road. From behind, without headlights on, came this yellow taxi (I only knew it was yellow after it zoomed past me). I took the left turn at around 50kmh and was accelerating off when the taxi came on my left and cut right across my path. Having very little reaction time, it was either I hit him or do something about it. I knew hitting the brakes was a futile thing as he was going across me and braking would just cause me to smash into him. So I swerved right to avoid and mounted the kerb. The whole thing detroyed my front bodykit and damaged both of my right rims and tires. My right front suspension was leaking after that as well. My front undercarriage neon light was also smashed too There could even be axle damage The worst part is that the taxi didn't even stopped to help and just drove off I didn't get a chance to note his licence plate before he ran off. Estimated damage Front bodykit : $250 Two rims + tires : $400 Suspension : $200??? Axles : ??? Wondering if I can go after the taxi company for this
