  1. So far the Malaysian Chinese I encounter do not seem to be handicapped by not being able to speak English and I mean those I meet in the construction industry. They are however more comfortable communicating with us in Mandarin though. Maybe the warden feels that way too? From ST Forum: http://www.straitstimes.com/STForum/Online...ory_738992.html Parking wardens should know some English Published on Nov 29, 2011 ON SUNDAY, I tried to strike up a conversation in English with a Cisco parking warden on duty at the junction of Telok Kurau Road and East Coast Road. He did not respond as he could not understand English. He then spoke in Mandarin and said he was from Malaysia. Maids are required to learn and pass English tests before employment. Shouldn't parking wardens on public duty understand basic conversational English? Ang Chin Guan

  6. Here's one I found in my MP3 player when i did my exercise this morning: Long John Baldry - Let The Heartaches Begin I can hear the guitars start to play And very soon they say, I was a fool to turn my love away And with each glass of wine I feel a glow, And very soon I know I was a fool to let my baby go . So let the heartaches begin, I can't help it, I can't win . I've lost that girl for sure, Tears won't help anymore . Yes let the heartaches begin, I can't help it, I can't win, I've lost that girl for sure . Now she's gone, I can't hold back the tears anymore I can see the couples dancin' through the night, Find More lyrics at www.sweetslyrics.com They hold each other tight, As they dance of love till the morning light The soft embraces that they seem to share, Just make me feel aware Of the lonliness I find so hard to bear

  14. Came accross this at Yahoo news 10 Signs You Have a Bad Boss Everyone likes to complain about their boss now and then, but here are 10 signs that you have a truly bad boss, the kind worth getting away from. And if you're a manager and recognize yourself in any of the below, it's time to immediately send yourself to manager rehab! 1. Yelling. Managers who yell actually diminish their own authority because they look out of control. After all, a manager confident in her own authority doesn't need to yell because she has far more effective tools available to her. Don't yell, and don't work for yellers. 2. Fuzzy expectations. If your manager doesn't communicate clear, concrete goals for your work, and convey to you what success in your position would look like, she's falling down on one of her most important jobs. A good test: If you and your manager were both asked what's most important for you to achieve this year, would your answers match? 3. Unreliability. She says she'll review your report by Tuesday, but it doesn't happen. She promises to join you for your important meeting but doesn't make it. She says she'll forward you a client's contact info, but it never arrives. You need to be able to rely on your manager to do what she says she's going to do, just as she needs to rely on you for the same. 4. Unwillingness to make decisions. This often takes the form of managers neglecting to address performance problems or not firing low performers. But it surfaces in other ways too, like not taking responsibility for moving work forward or punting in favor of trying to reach consensus. 5. Unreasonable demands. Holding staffers to a high standard is a good thing. But insisting that people work over the weekend to complete a project that isn't time-sensitive, or demanding that an employee do the truly impossible, is the mark of a tyrant. 6. Indirectness. When a manager sugarcoats to the point that her message is missed, or presents requirements as mere suggestions, staffers end up confused about expectations, and the manager ends up frustrated that her "suggestions" weren't acted upon. 7. Ruling by fear. Managers who rule through rigid control, negativity, and a climate of anxiety and fear don't trust that they can get things done any other way. Of course, it backfires in the end because fearful employees won't bring up new ideas for fear of being attacked and won't be honest about problems. Moreover, very few great people with options are going to want to work for a fear-based manager. 8. Defensiveness. Managers who respond defensively when their decisions are questioned end up quashing dissent and making employees less likely to suggest new and different ways of doing things. Managers who are secure in their authority aren't threatened by dissent, and they recognize that others' ideas are sometimes better than their own. 9. Drama. A good manager minimizes drama, rather than causing it. If everything is a crisis around your manager, she's probably what's at the center of the problem. 10. Fear of conflict. If your manager avoids conflict and tough conversations, chances are high that employees don't hear much feedback and problems don't get addressed. So now you know, don't say I teach you hor .......

  21. Friday Humor! Got off SBF It might be well to be a bit knowledgeable about earthquakes in case someone asks or wants to know more about them. Since science was my chosen profession for 35 years, I might be a bit more able than most to explain it. In hopes of a "knowing" society, I present this. What's the difference between an oscillatory and a trepidatory earthquake? 1. This calculation is just for engineers: This is a trepidatory earthquake: This is an oscillatory earthquake: And this is a combination of both: (trepidatory and oscillatory) Science is beautiful when it is well explained... I am sure you would like some privacy to study this subject in greater detail. Disclaimer: Taken off SBF and is an excellent educational article. Pity the chewren go back to school
  22. Engine Oil You Use Engine oils do more than you think It's easy to name the main function of engine oil: to lubricate every moving part of your engine with a protective film that reduces friction. But engine oil has at least four other duties, and failure to perform them all can seriously reduce the performance and life of your engine. First, your engine oil cleans your engine. Gasoline and diesel engines can produce soot, ash, acids, and moisture which form sludge, varnish, and resins. If they collect on critical engine parts, it means serious trouble. A quality engine oil keeps them suspended until filtered out or drained away when you change your oil. Next, oil seals microscopic hills and valleys on piston rings and cylinder walls. Without proper sealing action, you'll lose power and waste fuel. Engine oil also protects your engine against rust and corrosion. Finally, oil cools vital parts such as camshaft, rods, and pistons that the engine coolant in your radiator cannot reach. As much as 40% of the cooling job in your engine is performed by the oil in your crankcase. Making it easy to choose the proper oil for your car. Look For The STARBURST The API Certification Mark, also called the "Starburst", is found on the front label of most high quality passenger car engine oils made in North America. With so much depending on your oil's performance, it's important to select the right oil for your engine's needs. The American Petroleum Institute (API) Certification Mark identifies oils which have passed a comprehensive series of performance tests and performance audits. These tests verify the ability of the oil to perform vitually every task expected of it in your engine, from minimizing engine wear to preventing corrosion and the build-up of deposits. By choosing oil with the API Certification Mark, you can extend the life of your engine, reduce the chance of engine failure, and help maintain emission standards to fight pollution. API Certified engine oils are recommended for passenger car engine in most parts of the world. In Europe, a different system is used for passenger car oils and the same is true for heavy duty truck engine oils everywhere. How to read an engine oil label Detailed information about the quality of your engine oil is contained in the API Service Symbol, or "Donut" usually found on the back label of high quality oils. In the centre of the donut is the SAE viscosity grade (for example, SAE 5W-30). Viscosity is a measure of the oil's flow characteristics at certain temperatures. The first number / letter combination (e.g. 5W) indicates how well the oil will flow to lubricate critical engine parts at low temperatures. The lower this number, the more easily the oil will help your engine to start in cold weather. But bear in mind Singapore is so hot, so " W " is not important. Only in cold countries which has winter need to worry about cold start. The second number (e.g. 30) indicates the oil's ability to lubricate the engine at high temperature. In this case, the higher the number the thicker the oil. A multi-grade oil, SAE 5W-30 in this example, satisfies the requirements of both cold start and high temperature viscosity grades. In the top half of the donut ring, two letter combinations such as "SJ" identify the type of engine the oil is designed for and the performance rating of the oil. "S" ratings mean the oil is suitable for gasoline engines, and "C" ratings such as CH-4 designates oil for diesels. API Category SJ was introduced in 1996 and should be used for all current and earlier cars in North America. "Energy Conserving" may be shown in the bottom half of the donut ring. This label is used to identify oils which have been proven in laboratory tests to help reduce fuel consumption compared to standard reference conditions. European engine oils In Europe, the same SAE viscosity grade system is used although different grades such as SAE 10W-40 may be recommended. Performance quality is usually measured by a system developed by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association, ACEA (Association des Constructeurs Europ
  23. Hi everyone, I am currently doing on my Final Year Project on designing a mechanical device to prevent oil spill in sea. So I intended to make a device which I can actually remote control it, but I am trying to find places where I can get propellers and some powerful engines, and also rudder stocks. Anyone knows where I can get them from? Please help. Thanks! Your help will be very much appreciated!
