  4. I was actually there that day, landed that morning too. I think some of the ppl on my plane might have been inside the buses there. I avoided it cos my hotel was in Incheon, so didn't need to travel into town yet. Saw the aftermath in the afternoon. Some of the cars looked to be in really bad shape. Visibility that morning was about 1.5meters but cleared up when i had to travel out. Was quite impressed the pilots could actually land the plane when viewing from the on-board tv/camera, cannot see the runway until just before touchdown. Power. Korean air stewardesses quite chio also, but i shy to take foto. http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-31403615 Two dead in 100-car South Korea pile-up Police said a bus may have gone into the back of a car, starting the pile-up At least two people have been killed in a pile-up involving about 100 cars on a bridge near South Korea's Incheon International Airport. Another 42 people were injured in the incident, eight of them seriously, the Yonhap news agency reports. The cause is not clear, but police said initial reports suggested a bus had hit the back of a car in foggy conditions. The bridge connects Incheon and the capital, Seoul, to the airport on Yongjing island. The pile-up occurred at about 09:30 local time (00:30 GMT). Authorities said icy roads were also a factor. TV footage showed emergency rescue workers trying to get to a mass of twisted and crumpled vehicles on the fog-covered bridge. Authorities said they had blocked off lanes on both sides of the bridge At least 100 cars were involved There was heavy fog on the bridge at the time of the incident "I heard a series of bangs in front of me. Then I was rear-ended by a following car," cab driver Yoo Sang-young told the Yonhap news agency. "I felt my car turning around and hitting a protection rail. I then lost consciousness." Another driver said he could not see ahead of him in the thick fog. "I slowed down but still rammed into the cars piled up in front of me," he said. The Seoul-bound side of the bridge and a number of lanes in the other direction have been shut down. But the Associated Press news agency quoted police official Park Sang-yeoul as saying the damaged cars had now been removed from the cross-sea bridge.

  6. South Korea announces US$10b energy package Posted: 08 June 2008 1555 hrs Photos of SEOUL : South Korea on Sunday announced a 10 billion dollar energy package aimed at helping consumers cope with the effects of rising oil prices. The package includes tax rebates for 12.8 million people for one year and subsidies for low earners to buy fuel, Prime Minister Han Seung-Soo said in a statement. "We have great difficulty as our country is the world's fifth-largest oil consumer while it does not produce a drop of oil," Han said. Among the beneficiaries of the 10.49 trillion won (10.3 billion dollars) package are truckers who have threatened to strike unless the government helps them reduce surging energy costs, the statement said. Oil prices on Friday posted their highest ever one-day gain of nearly 11 dollars, hitting a new record of 138.54 dollars a barrel in New York trade. Han added that the government would consider further measures, including tax cuts, if oil prices exceed 170 dollars per barrel. - AFP/ms

  8. No one talk about this? Pray for the missing one to be found and RIP to the student and woman who didnt make it P.S some of the news said 300+ still went missing http://edition.cnn.com/2014/04/15/world/asia/south-korea-sinking-ship-students/ Seoul, South Korea (CNN) - Rescue boats and helicopters scrambled to pluck passengers, most of them high school students, from a ferry as it listed and slowly sank off the southwest coast of South Korea on Wednesday. It's unclear exactly how many of the 477 people on board were rescued. Many jumped from the listing ship to the freezing waters below. At one point, South Korean authorities said 386 passengers had been rescued and that 104 remain unaccounted for. But later Wednesday, they said they couldn't provide exact numbers. What is known is that at least two people -- a woman and a student -- were confirmed dead. The rescue operation was still underway six hours after the ferry first sent out distress signal. Authorities could not immediately say what caused the ship to sink. The weather at the time of the incident in the area was clear. 'I wanted to live' Among the passengers the ferry, Sewol, was carrying were 325 students. The group left from the port city of Incheon, just west of Seoul, for a four-day trip to the resort island of Jeju. Around 9 a.m. local time, the ferry sent out its first distress call. It had begun to list.

  14. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HP18VqvsJWM A drunk driver tried to flee after running over a motorcyclist in Korea, only to be chased down and trapped by a cabby and Porsche driver. According to a Korea Bang article, Ms Wu had been speeding in the far left lane, when she hit a biker at the traffic light. The scene was witnessed by Choi the Porsche driver and Ahn the cabby, who immediately went after Ms Wu as she tried to leave. The pursuit went on for minutes as Ms Wu continued driving recklessly in an attempt to shake off the two drivers. Together, they finally closed in on her vehicle and blocked the path. Ahn and Choi were each awarded 200,000, 40 bonus driving points, together with a letter of appreciation by the Western Daejon Police Department. The motorcyclist was discharged from hospital with no serious injuries, while Ms Wu was fined. If this was in Singapore, probably will be reprimanded by TP, and awarded demerit points. No such thing as bonus driving points.
  15. All tikos take note! http://www.straitstimes.com/breaking-news/asia/story/s-korean-province-considers-nudist-beach-bid-draw-tourists-20131023 SEOUL (AFP) - A South Korean province is considering setting up the country's first nudist beach in an attempt to boost tourism, but is already receiving protests from the public, officials said on Wednesday. The idea was initially put forward by the East Sea-Rim Headquarters (ESRH) - a department of the government in the eastern province of Gangwon. The proposal envisages opening a nudist area by 2017 to attract more foreign visitors to a province known for its sandy beaches. "We see this project as part of our efforts to promote tourism," an ESRH official said.
  16. South Korea unveiled its new “tourist police” force Wednesday, with snappy uniforms from rapper Psy’s costume designer and a “Gangnam Style” launch in central Seoul. Around 100 young policemen and women make up the first batch of the new force – formed to protect tourists from being ripped off during their stay in the South Korean capital. The officers were handpicked for their linguistic skills, and can speak a range of languages including English, Japanese and Mandarin. “Those who think they were overcharged by taxi drivers or street food vendors can come and talk to us. We will help settle the problem,” English-speaking recruit Park Jae-Hyoung told AFP. Each officer wears a badge denoting his language expertise on a special dark-blue uniform created by one of the costume designers for the “Gangnam Style” star Psy. The singer’s global hit was played at Wednesday’s launch event, with a police drill unit performing his signature horse-riding dance. “The tourist police wasn’t created because this country is unsafe,” Lee Charm, president of the Korea Tourism Organization told the new recruits. “You are ambassadors who promote how safe this country is,” he said. “From now on, you guys will be very busy having pictures taken with tourists.” The police are unarmed and are meant to summon regular officers in the event of any serious crime. South Korea unveiled its new "tourist police" force at Gwanghwamun square in Seoul on Oct 16, 2013, with snappy uniforms from rapper Psy's costume designer and a Gangnam Style launch. The tourist police will protect tourists from being ripped off during their stay in the South Korean capital. The number of foreign travelers to South Korea has steadily grown over the years and topped 10 million for the first time in 2012, partly thanks to interest sparked by the global popularity of “Gangnam Style.” The song, released a year ago, made Psy an international star, and is the most popular video of all time on YouTube with nearly 1.8 billion views. 17. With a long standing tradition of building compact, open top sports cars that started with the S600 and ending with the S2000, Honda seems intent to get back into the game. After seeing the success Toyota/Subaru has had with the 86/BRZ, Honda is primed to one-up its rivals. According to a source within Honda, a new affordable sports car is being seriously considered, but don't expect something as high-end as the S2000 - think small, quick and light. The car would be small, probably even smaller than the Mazda MX-5, and come equipped with either a 1.3-litre or 1.5-litre in-line four with i-VTEC. Keep your expectations low on its power output, but thanks to its light weight which is rumored to sit around 900kg, the car should have adequate acceleration along with good handling and an overall agile driving experience. There's even talk that the "S1500" may come with a mid-engine layout, in the style of the Honda Beat. As for the car's design direction, Honda would either use the Japan-only N-ONE or make it look more like the current Civic. We reckon the N-ONE's styling would do justice because it pays homage to the iconic S600. Rumours of a new Honda roadster have appeared and disappeared with tide-like regularity since the moment the S2000 died, and none of them have come to pass. The NSX revival was followed by nearly a decade of will-they, won't-they rumours and telephone-game whispers before Honda actually buckled down and built something. It seems like the same thing could be happening here. Either way, let's wait for Honda to come up with this answer to the Toyota 86 and the Mazda MX-5 in 2015 or 2016.

  19. If you're one of those people out there who happened to buy the KIA Rio last decade, you may no longer recognise KIA cars of today. The thing is the South Korean automaker is picturing itself as 90 percent of an European brand. With that being said, the company has been decorating its cars with everything European, from LEDs to leather interiors and electronically retractable side mirrors. In addition to that, the South Korean brand is also seemingly pursuing the ST, RS, and GTI lineups from its rivals. All of these lineups are pretty legendary as they tend to make it to the cover of most car magazines every year. For KIA, on the other hand, it has already prepared the pro_cee'd GT to kick off with. KIA cee'd GT Launched just recently in Great Britain, the three-door sporty hatchback (or Sportback, as Audi would say) runs on a 1.6-litre turbo engine that promises a total power output of 201bhp. The good thing is, the pro_cee'd GT may not be KIA's only GT lineup as the company has confirmed that the Rio GT is a possibility. A KIA insider confirmed with Auto Express that if everything went well and that the KIA pro_cee'd GT was received warmly, the GT lineups could be seen expanded, possibly including the Rio GT. However, there may still be one other problem. It is said that KIA will also see how its five-door procee'd GT fares in the global automotive market before continuing with the Rio GT. But then again, the model won't be launched until 2014 and by then, the Rio would have been three years old. Well, if only KIA would 'pro_cee'd' with the Rio GT sooner..
  20. Bad news has just struck workers at the South Korean General Motors (GM) plant. According to American automaker Chevrolet, it isn't likely to perform production of the next generation Aveo in the aforementioned Asian country. The announcement came last Thursday, mentioning that the next generation compact car from Chevrolet, the Aveo, would be produced in China and US exclusively instead. Unfortunately, this has provoked a reaction from the worker union. If GM sticks to its plan, a threat of the union striking seems inevitable. Honestly speaking, this announcement from the US-based automaker came at such an improper time. GM Korea and the union are actually holding wage talks and have not had a smooth start. This is even more reason for the union to launch their strike, with the strike being the union's biggest legitimate weapon they can use to defend themselves. According to GM, though, it seems that it is no longer profitable for the company to keep building the Aveo in the country despite the fact that South Korea has been producing 40 percent of all Chevrolet cars that are sold worldwide. The reason for GM to switch production to other countries is mostly due to the rising wages in South Korea. And, the Aveo isn't the only model affected. GM has also announced that it will no longer produce the Chevrolet Cruze in the country, either. Taking everything into account, it seems that GM will stick to its plan indeed. On the other hand, it seems that the workers in the union are also determined to launch their strike. With that being said, this may turn out to be quite a huge problem, not only for Chevrolet and the workers but probably for us as well who are thinking about buying a Chevy.
  21. It's out of the question that we would normally use a sedan to carry four to five passengers altogether, probably with some goods in the trunk. However, this isn't the case this time. Instead of carrying passengers and 'some' goods, this sedan - which I think is a Hyundai Accent or Verna - was forced to carry a massive amount of goods. This sedan was seen being a carrier for massive goods last weekend on the Korean border, near Panmunjom, Paju. It was driven by a South Korean citizen trying to go back to his home country. As you can see from the images, the goods nearly covered all parts of the sedan. The goods even nearly, if not completely, covered the rear windshield. How was the driver supposed to see when he needed to reverse the car then? The driver was reported to be previously working in North Korea. However, as we know, the rising tension between the two countries has forced all workers from South Korea to return home. In total, there are 175 South Korean citizens that have been asked to leave North Korea. Most of those asked to leave previously worked in joint ventures of North and South Korea. Since they have to evacuate immediately, they have had to make do with whatever transport they can find. Well, it seems that the Hyundai in the image was just unlucky enough. However, it wasn't alone as there were also other sedans which received the very same fate. I wonder, though, if the suspensions of those sedans received any damage at all. You see, if the suspensions retain their good working conditions after reaching their destinations, these sedans might in fact be some of the strongest sedans automakers have ever built!
  22. The swoopy Kia Optima K5 has just undergone a facelift for the 2013 model year. For this blog post, I've compiled a set of before and after photos for the readers to make their own comparison. As the saying goes, 'a picture is worth a thousand words'. Before After Before After Before After The most obvious cosmetic update is done at the taillight combination. Personally, I prefer the current model's taillight as it is more sleek. The face lifted version reminds me of an Optima which did not have a good night sleep. On the inside, the 2013 Optima gets a sportier steering wheel and a new gear stick.
  23. If you happen to be quite well off or have some spare savings, it might be a good idea to consider staying at China. The economy in the country keeps growing positively that it has become a good place to live in. This has been proven even further with the recent huge investment by Volkswagen (VW) and the fact that the South Korean automaker KIA has now launched a new brand targeted specifically at the Chinese market. The brand is known as Horki and comes under parent company KIA. What we know is that, in Mandarin, 'Hor' or 'He' means together whereas 'Ki' or 'Qi' means air or atmosphere. And the word as a whole, means 'harmony'. Well, that makes sense to us as we think the first Horki concept vehicle looks dynamic indeed. For now, there's only one model that KIA is building for the brand Horki. Of course, we believe that there'll be more models later on. The model has yet to receive its official name but it is based on the platform also used by the KIA Forte. However, this doesn't necessarily mean that the first Horki model borrows design cues from the KIA Forte. As a matter of fact, from what we can see as far as design is concerned, this Horki concept vehicle doesn't have any similar design from any of KIA models. Slated for a 2015 release date in the Chinese automotive market, the first Horki model looks aggressive as well as sleek. This can be seen on the designs of the headlamps, front grille, air intakes, and rear taillights
