  1. how many of you earn more than 75K PA?
  2. Not many people know about this fact; Korean automaker, Hyundai, used to race in the World Rally Championships (WRC) from 2000 to 2003. The car used was a second generation Hyundai Accent. Two more revised versions of the car were later developed during that time but in the second half of 2003, Hyundai announced its withdrawal from the competition. Today, Hyundai will make a comeback into the world of WRC by unveiling the i20 WRC rally car. Hyundai has transformed the subcompact car into a little monster that will challenge the big boys of the World Rally Championships. The Hyundai i20 WRC rally car was showcased at the recent Paris Motor Show and the display clearly indicates the automaker
  3. In 2011, sales of Korean cars in the European Union grew 24% although the overall market contracted. On the other hand, French carmakers saw their sales falling with PSA Peugeot Citroen announcing plans to slash 8,000 jobs. As a result, France has officially sent a request to the EU Commission to monitor South Korean car imports, which could possibly result in tarrifs being slapped on the vehicles despite an EU-South Korean free trade agreement that was signed only a year ago. EU Trade Spokesman, John Clancy, said in a statement that the EU has received a note from the French authorities requesting surveillance measures for South Korean car imports. He added that the commission is reviewing the request carefully. If France manages to get its way, local carmakers will be able to obtain detailed information including the type and number of products scheduled for export to Europe before the cars even arrive. According to Reuters, although exports to EU grew by 40% since the free trade deal was signed on 1 July 2011, the number is far below the 640,000 units imported in 2007. This is because companies such as Kia and Hyundai have increased their production capacity in countries such as Turkey and Czech Republic. The backlash against Korean cars isn
  4. The Hyundai Veloster (pictured above) has just been released recently and it is one fine looking hatchback. And for those who craves for more power, there is a turbo version (pictured below). There are rumours going around that Hyundai is working on a more powerful version of the Veloster and it would put the car in the hot hatch category with the likes of the Volkswagen GTI and Ford Focus ST. The Hyundai Veloster Turbo shares many parts with the normal Veloster model (for example, same suspension set-up) and some believed that Hyundai has left the Veloster Turbo in this manner to make way for more improvements. The Veloster Turbo currently delivers around 186bhp with roughly 265Nm of torque. Pretty good from a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine. If these rumours are to be true, we should expect an upgrade in suspension set-up, preferably with mechanically adjustable dampeners and independent rear suspension instead of the current V-beam rear set-up. A lower ride would make sense if the car is going to get more power. As for the engine, I am not really sure if more power could be extracted out from the current 1.6-litre turbocharged engine. One option is to feature the 2.0-litre engine from the Hyundai Genesis Coupe which is able to deliver around 274bhp and with 373Nm of torque (with premium unleaded fuel). But it is not known if this option would be financially feasible for the company. Maybe it is still possible to extract a bit more power from the current 1.6-litre powerplant. The Veloster Turbo has just reached our shores and I feel that this is the type of car local consumers would like to take a much closer look at; reasonable engine displacement size with a rather powerful engine. And a more powerful version could probably take on the continental hatchbacks that has dominated the hot hatch segment for many years. Photo credit: Net Car Show

  6. When preparing a suitable vehicle for any upcoming zombie apocalypse, a Hyundai Elantra Coupe might not be the first option that comes to your mind. Although it is fuel economical (a good thing, considering there will be no petrol kiosks in operation during a zombie apocalypse), but it lacks the finesse needed for zombie-attacking situations. Recently, Hyundai tried to convince us that the Elantra Coupe is suitable for such situations by showing off renderings of a zombie-proof version. The car was sketched in honour of the 100th episode of The Walking Dead comic series. Now the car is ready and it was recently displayed at Comic-Con in San Diego, California. The specially modified Elantra Coupe was designed by Robert Kirkman, who created the Walking Dead comic series. The car received a zombie plow, window grates, roof hatch, and a trunk filled with electric and pneumatic weapons, among others. The owner

  8. The funkiest Hyundai to date, the Veloster is here in Singapore. But sad to say, the performance failed to match its good looks. Powered by a 138bhp 1.6-litre Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine, the Veloster is only about 10 bhp more than the 1.6-litre MPI engine found in the Elantra. It sprints leisurely to 100km/h in a leisurely 10.3 seconds. Even a mundane looking VW Jetta 1.4-litre TSI can leave the Veloster behind. But fear not, for there is a super-hot 1.6 Turbo-GDI version of the Veloster, which is good for 201 bhp. Coupled with a 6-speed automatic gearbox, the forced-induction coupe completes the century sprint in a quick 7.5 seconds. The Veloster seemed to go from mildly spicy in the non-turbo form to extremely spicy in the turbo variant. Is there room for something in-between? I believe there is. Just like the VW Golf, there is a base 122bhp version, a mid-range 160bhp
  9. Most of the time, in action movies, we get to see a car (or vehicle) explosion. Usually it is from a nudge from another car and the nudged car flips, lands and explode or from a simple but accurate gunshot to the fuel tank. It looks as though cars get blown up very easily in movies. But, in reality, that is not the case. In fact, you could shoot a bullet through the fuel tank and the car will not explode and also, we will never get to see the kind of explosions we usually see in movies when a car is driven off a cliff. So, how are these vehicular explosions are achieved in movies? In this age of digitally made special effects, the widely preferred option when dealing with car explosions in movies is to do a real live explosion. Digitally made explosions still look very artificial and a real fireball looks simply stunning. This was explained by Drew Jiritano of DJFX, a professional New York special effects company. But to film an effective explosion is not as easy as it seems.

  11. Why I was growing up, the only thing I remember about South Korea is they have lots of student riots Nowadays, they have well known electronic companies like Samsung and LG, their cars are on the up and also making an impact on the entertainment scene with their K-Pop and tv series. How did this come about? Was there a guiding hand behind all these or did it just come about? Taiwan is another one. Their politics seem farcical, their entertainment rather crass (imo) but they have companies like Acer, Asus and HTC.
  12. Despite having engine tie-ups with PSA Peugeot Citroen (for the development of new front wheel drive hybrids) and Toyota (joint development of next-generation lithium-ion batteries for hybrids), BMW are reportedly having talks with Hyundai over a possible agreement to share future development costs for engines and other areas. This information was revealed by an insider who mentioned that the two companies are still in the early stages of discussion. Another source also mentioned that the two automakers had discussed a comprehensive alliance which includes a jointly developed engine where development costs will be split equally. A report in a German industrial publication, Automobil Produktion, stated that BMW and Hyundai were looking to spend a combined amount of US$1.3 billion and US$2.6 billion on the development of a new engine family. The report also claimed that Hyundai senior managers, including Chung Eui-Sun (the son of Hyundai Chairman, Chung Mong-Koo) met with BMW officials at BMW
  13. SEOUL (Reuters) - North Korea's much hyped long-range rocket launch on Friday ended in apparent failure, South Korean officials said, dealing a blow to the prestige of the reclusive and impoverished state that defied international pressure to push ahead with the plan. North Korea said it wanted the Unha-3 rocket to put a weather satellite into orbit, although critics believed it was designed to enhance the capacity of North Korea to design a ballistic missile deliver a nuclear warhead capable of hitting the continental United States. A spokesman for the Defence Ministry in Seoul told journalists that the rocket had broken up and crashed into the sea a few minutes after launch. Officials from Japan confirmed the mission had failed, while ABC News cited U.S. officials saying it had failed, although there was no immmediate indication of where it fell. The rocket's flight was set to take it over a sea separating the Korean peninsula, with an eventual launch of a third stage of the rocket in seas near the Philippines that would have put the satellite into orbit. This was North Korea's second consecutive failure to get a satellite into orbit, although it claimed success with a 2009 launch and there was no comment on the launch from North Korea's official media. The Unha-3 rocket took off from a new launch site on the west coast of North Korea, near the Chinese border. The launch had been timed to coincide with the 100th birthday celebrations of the isolated and impoverished state's founder, Kim Il-sung, and came after a food aid deal with the United States had hinted at an easing of tensions on the world's most militarised border. 14. [extract] The second generation Santa Fe has been with us since 2007. Now, Hyundai is preparing to launch its replacement at the upcoming 2012 New York International Auto Show in April by releasing two exterior images of the side and front quarter. These images clearly show the design language of the new mid-size crossover. Code named DM in Korea, the Santa Fe is the latest model to incorporate Hyundai's new Fluidic Sculpture design language with an aggressive style which Hyundai calls
  15. [extract] When I first bought my car, the wheels on it was in a terrible state. It was full of kerb rash and dents. I decided to get a new set of wheels and did some internet research on what type of wheels that I would like to get. During that time, I came across several terms that were alien to me. Things like pitch circle diameter (PCD) and offset were new to me and I simply did not understand them. I asked several people about it and got several explanations about them and it just made me more confused. Eventually, I found out the real meaning of these terms in a magazine and I wish to share them with everyone here who might have the same problems as I did before. Let

  17. [extract] Hyundai has unveiled the European specced Veloster Turbo at Geneva. This turbocharged version of the quirky Veloster brings a little more power to the car that has all the styling of speed but saddled with only 140 horses from its normally aspirated 1.6-litre engine. With the application of a turbocharger, the Hyundai Veloster Turbo makes 183bhp and about 270Nm torque. Good for the affordable single rear door coupe to have a 0-100km/h time of 8.4seconds compared to the 9.7seconds of the 1180kg normally aspirated car. - The normally aspirated Veloster- This is actually an affordable fastback cum coupe for the masses but unfortunately for us over here, Hyundai has not even brought in the normally aspirated model pictured above. The right hand drive variant has been launched early 2011 and it is already being sold in the UK and Australia. This brings us to the problem of affordability
  18. [extract] Oh no, it looks like Peter Schreyer's team over at Kia has run into a styling quandary. The newly released official pictures of the Mercedes Benz S-class / BMW 7 series sized Kia K9 tells me that he has suddenly decided to loose his Audi roots and design something that looks like a BMW 7 series from the era where I (and a whole lot of BMW critics) hate
  19. Hello, Any of you ever self-drive in Korea before? I plan to do one in Mar-Apr 2012, start from Seoul, then to Busan, then fly to Jeju Island. I understand we need an International Driving License to do that. Also, traffic within Seoul can be bad, but then I will most probably leave the city upon collecting the car. Thoughts, opinions?
  20. For some fans, it's not enough to just catch a glimpse of Korea's hottest girl group, Girls' Generation, who will be in town for two sell-out concerts on Dec 9 and 10. There's a new, more determined K-pop fan culture in town. Many Girls' Generation fans want to be noticed by the nine beautiful members and to get as close as possible to them. Student Gary Tan, who leads local fan club Sonesg, flew to Korea with two fellow club members to visit the parents of one of the singers to apologise for upsetting her when she was in Singapore last year.
