  1. Despite the recent massive recalls of Hyundai cars, the South Korean automaker keeps on trying to attract customers with its vehicle lineups. This time, it's the 'baby' Sonata's turn to amaze customers with its styling and features. Officially known as the Mingtu, the Chinese media prefer to call it the Sonata Lite. Regardless of what the more appropriate name is, the car looks quite attractive indeed. Judging from the leaked image, the Mingtu sports some visual styling cues that come from its bigger brother, the original Sonata. Yet, it has its own uniqueness to show as well. The headlamps, for example, are not the same as those of its bigger brother. Also, on the front bumper, there're LED daytime running lights ready to assist the car in terms of illumination. The Hyundai Mingtu is actually intended to occupy the gap that exists between the Sonata and the Elantra in a new segment in the Chinese car market. Rumour has it that this 'baby' Sonata will feature both 1.8 and 2.0-litre engines along with a six-speed manual or an automatic transmission. The image of the Mingtu can be seen on a billboard next to Hyundai's stand in the 2013 Shanghai Auto Show. If you can't wait to see this little baby with your own eyes, don't miss out the event that will start opening its doors to the press on the 20th April 2013.
  2. If you own a Hyundai car, especially the Elantra, you might want to be more careful and try to avoid accidents as much as you can. Otherwise, you might risk ending up slicing your ear or probably even other body parts. No, we aren't making things up. This has happened to at least one Hyundai owner that we know of. It's a common thing for airbags to deploy in the event of a crash. However, for this sedan model from Hyundai, the Elantra, the deployment of the airbags just might prove not to be as smooth as expected. Thing is, when the airbags are deployed, a headliner support bracket will also be propelled. Unfortunately, in the case of the Hyundai Elantra, the bracket might become loose and even be completely dismounted. As a result, the bracket might end up flying across the car cabin, carrying a possible threat of causing laceration injuries to any of the passengers inside the car. The Elantra owner we talked about earlier had his ear sliced by this headliner support bracket and had reported it to Hyundai. According to Hyundai, this defect only applies to its aforementioned sedan model units that were built sometime between 2011 and 2013. To address this issue, the South Korean automaker is now recalling 186,254 units of the Elantra affected. For Elantra owners that have yet to receive notification from Hyundai or to find out more about this defect, it's advisable to contact Hyundai. Well, while we honestly think that it's possible to fix this issue simply by applying adhesive strips to the headliner, we do recommend that you contact your local Hyundai dealerships that will apply the fix in the upcoming May. Chances are, you will get the fix for free anyway.
  3. Hyundai has unwrapped the HND-9 Sports Coupe Concept at the 2013 Seoul Motor Show that runs from 28th March to 7th April. The concept is said to preview the next generation Genesis Coupe and is intended to showcase the design elements of its future products and evolution of the brand's 'Fluidic Sculpture' design language. The rear-wheel driven concept has an elongated hood, butterfly doors, hexagonal-shaped grille, quad exhaust pipe setup and wears 22-inch alloys. From a certain angle, the windscreen and roofline resemble those found on Saab products. The concept measures 4,695mm long, 1,890mm wide and 1,340mm tall with a wheelbase of 2,860mm. The HND-9 Sports Concept is powered by a 3.3-litre turbocharged, direct-injection engine which is good for 364bhp. The engine is paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. On the inside, the dashboard is highly driver-oriented and modeled after a cockpit for that sporty feel. Do pay attention to the unconventionally-shaped steering wheel. Last but not least, the seats project different colours depending on the angle of sight.
  4. In 2009, Hyundai and KIA had to recall 700,000 units of their models due to defective brake switches. Unfortunately, not learning from their experiences, these South Korean automakers repeat their mistake and this time, it's even worse. They now have to recall a total of 1.6 million units of cars they have produced due to the exact same problem. The brake switch defect may prevent the brake lamps from illuminating even when the brake pedal is actually stepped on. Of course, this is a big deal as it may trigger rear-end collisions. In addition to that, the defect may fail to cancel the cruise control feature while braking, prevent the push-button starter from functioning, and may even block the gear shift in the neutral position. Both KIA and Hyundai will start contacting dealers and customers of the affected models in June 2013 and will provide necessary replacements free of charge. The list of the affected models is as follows: - 2007 KIA Sedona - 2007-2009 Hyundai Tucson - 2008-2009 Hyundai Veracruz - 2007-2010 KIA Rondo - 2007-2010 KIA Sportage - 2007-2010 Hyundai Elantra - 2007-2011 KIA Sorento - 2007-2011 Hyundai Santa Fe - 2010-2011 KIA Soul - 2010-2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe - 2011 Hyundai Sonata - 2011 KIA Optima

  6. Many here has switch from expensive Japanese cars to value for money korean makes. But in Korea, it maybe the begining of the other way round after tax cuts on imported vehicles were made recently in Korea. Trying to imagine if more models start flooding their maket with foreign Jap imports. The parallel Jap imports and Thai made Japanese models are just as expensive here in Singapore and why can't we get the cheaper made in USA version. http://www.mycarforum.com/blog/myautoblog/...the-year-award/
  7. I'm sure you are aware of Chinese automaker, Chery, who is perhaps well known for the QQ compact hatchback. Chery (and Chinese cars in general) are economical and provided adequate power for your basic commuting needs in decent comfort. But then again, styling was not the forte of Chinese cars and Chery is about to change that perception. Chery is embarking to design their own cars from now, and they have hired Turkish-born German automotive designer, Hakan Saracoglu, for the job. If the name doesn't ring a bell, maybe his portfolio will. 47-year old Hakan Saracoglu, previously worked at Ford for the Mondeo and Focus projects before moving on to a famed German marque
  8. Only until recently, the Kia Optima 2.0-litre Turbo was only reserved for the North American market as it was solely available in left-hand drive mode. However, Kia has managed to overcome the engineering impediments to building a right-hand drive version which is starting to roll off the production line. The Optima turbo features direct injection and is rated at 274bhp with 365Nm of torque. The engine is mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission that sends power to the front wheels. The top-of-the range Optima completes the century sprint in a brisk 6.8 seconds. This means that the Optima turbo reaches the 100km/h mark faster than a BMW 520i. The addition of the Optima turbo will strengthen Kia's image in Singapore if it is introduced here. The Korean sedan will finally have the 'go' to match the 'show' and put it in a better position to compete with the Europeans. Here's a short video review of the Kia Optima Turbo:

  10. Mr Edward Lee, CEO of Hyundai Motor Company Australia (HMCA), has been promoted to head of International Sales Division. He will resume the position back in South Korea. Mr Lee's promotion is well deserved. During his tenure in HMCA which began in May 2009, Hyundai's sales in Australia grew from 45,409 vehicles in 2008 to 91,536 vehicles in 2012, which is slightly more than doubled. In addition, dealerships in the country has increased from 142 to 155. "Working in Australia has been the most rewarding and enjoyable time of my professional career," said Mr Lee. "I would like to thank the fantastic team who have supported me, both our Hyundai staff around Australia and in our dealerships - we really do have world class people working for Hyundai and that is reflected in our results. I would also like to thank our associates across the country, everyone with whom I've worked in my capacity as CEO. I've made some lifelong friends here and it is very sad to be leaving this great country." For his effort in improving exports to Australia, Mr Lee has previously received a government award from the President of Korea.
  11. Hyundai has released a teaser image of the HCD-14 concept prior to its world premiere at the upcoming Detroit Motor Show. From the image, the concept adopts a four-door coupe design, which is the "in" thing now. Hyundai commented that the HCD-14 concept will give the automotive world a glimpse into future Hyundai premium vehicle design, advanced 3-D gesture-based technology controls, and spirited driving dynamics. John Krafcik, president and chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, twitted that the HCD-14 concept is Genesis-related. The second generation Genesis sedan was recently spotted testing in Germany in heavy camouflage. The HCD-14 concept is believed to be a precursor to the luxury Korean saloon's replacement. 12. The completely redesigned Kia Optima K5 sedan made its debut back at the 2010 New York Motor Show. Now, the K5 is getting ready to receive a cosmetic update. Photos of the heavily-camouflaged Optima facelift have been captured in its home town of South Korea. Thanks to the extensive cladding, the styling updates on the Optima are well hidden. However, from one of the front angle, one can spot the modified head light combination which features two individual circular housing units. In addition, there appears to be a new LED strip above the head lights. The covered-up boot may mean that there could be some modifications made to the boot and taillight combination. The design of the alloy rims looks identical to the current model. With the facelift, one of the items in my wish list is for the 274bhp 2.0-litre turbo version to make it to the Asian market. 13. Kia's Chief Design Officer, Peter Schreyer, has been promoted to president from his current executive vice president position. This makes the German the first non-Korean president in the Korean automaker. In addition to Schreyer, there are two other presidents in the company. Schreyer jumped ship from Volkswagen AG to Kia in 2006 when Kia decided to focus on the European market, identifying design as its core growth engine. With Schreyer on board, Kia introduced a new corporate grille known as the 'Tiger Nose' to create a recognisable 'face' for the brand. The first Kia vehicle to bear Schreyer's styling direction is the first generation Kia Forte. Since then, the new corporate grille has been featured from the humble Picanto to the top-of-the-range Quoris luxury saloon. The second generation Forte carries the 'Tiger nose' as well but in a more aggressive form. The 'Tiger nose' grille is now as recognisable to a Kia as the 'Double Kidney' grille is to a BMW. "The promotion shows Kia's key focus areas shifting from production and cost efficiency, which were traditionally considered more important, to design and research and development," said Shin Chung Kwan, an analyst at KB Investment & Securities Co. in Seoul. The second generation Kia Forte
  14. Hyundai has just delivered an armored Equus limousine to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Mr Ban Ki-moon. Coincidentally, Mr Ban hails from the same country as his new ride, that is South Korea. The bulletproof Equus is built on a stretched version of the Korean automaker's flagship luxury sedan platform. It weighs at 8,448 pounds. This special Equus was reported to be developed in cooperation with Stoof International, a German company that specialises in building such vehicles. The car is capable of withstanding bullets from common assault rifles up to 7.62x51 in calibre. Despite weighing much more than the regular model, Mr Ban's Equus is still powered by the same 5.0-litre V8 GDI engine which develops 424bhp. The engine is mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission. Since Mr Ban is unlikely to be interested in winning the traffic light drag race, there should not be any issue.
  15. Kia Motors, South Korea's second largest auto manufacturer has been making automobiles for quite sometime. They first started making re-badged Mazda Familia during the 1970s. It was only during the late 1980s that Kia started manufacturing vehicles extensively and by the early 1990s, you could virtually see a Kia vehicle in almost every major market. Fast forward to today, the company is fast moving into the upscale region and it is not surprising when the company announced that they are aiming to be a premium global automotive brand. During a recent function where the company's top dealers and distributors met, Kia Motors' president, Lee Hyoung Keun announced the company's five-year target and its goal is to be on the same level with European and Japanese premium auto brands. Mr. Lee also mentioned that the company will develop ever-more sophisticated vehicles that customers will aspire to own. He also confirmed that the company has set a target of exporting 2.21 million units of vehicles to overseas market. This is an increase of 8.3 percent over the 2.04 million units sold last year. If you were to ask me, this goal that Kia Motors are trying to achieve is hugely possible. Just take a look at Kia's current models. They are very much more aesthetically pleasing, compared to its older models. Kia's ever increasing popularity is basically built on its stylish new designs and at the same time, it has made Kia one of the fastest growing auto brands. The company has previously stated that one of its priorities is to improve the quality and technology featured in its cars and hopefully that this will help in brand perception. When Kia meets its five-year target, we will have to see at which new level the automaker has reached and at the rate they are going; I have a strong feeling that Kia will surpass some Japanese auto companies.
  16. When it comes to automatic transmissions, four speed auto transmissions are fast getting replaced with more advanced auto transmissions. More automakers are introducing six, seven and even eight speed automatic transmission into their vehicles nowadays. These introductions are made mainly for fuel efficiency reasons, to get more kilometres out of their fuel consumption usage. But, there are also some automakers such as Nissan, who are moving towards the usage of continuously variable transmissions (CVTs). But that is not the case for Hyundai as the Korean automaker has preferred dual clutch transmissions over continuously variable transmissions. Mike O
